(8) Jeremiah Frei-Pearson is a personal friend of mine and supports my right to marry. The incumbent, a 26-year conservative State Senator, is part of the old Queens Democrat machine. In 2009 he opposes abortion rights, has received the backing of the Christian coalition in the past, was just one of eight Democrats to vote against marriage equality. As a gay New Yorker who demands my rights, I will do anything I can to elect Jeremiah Frei-Pearson to the New York State Senate. The New York State Senate is rated the most dysfunctional legislature in the country, and Onorato is a part of the problem. He has to go. Jeremiah, I know, will be part of the solution. Onorato has said that his district is conservative. He supported John McCain in the last election. In Onorato’s two-plus decades in office, he has become out of touch with our district. He has a few new neighbors – from around the world – and they want a man like Jeremiah to represent them. Jeremiah was one of the leaders of Western Queens for Obama, and Barack Obama overwhelmingly won the district. Jeremiah leads Western Queens for Marriage Equality. They had a rally this summer asking Onorato to vote “yes” on marriage equality. 2,500 people attended - it was the biggest rally ever in Athens Park. The counter-rally, against marriage equality, had less than 20 people. George Onorato voted with the 20, not the 2,500. He has to go. A man makes a woman pregnant. Then, he leaves the woman, without ever sending her financial supports for the baby. There, in Honduras, mandatory child support systems don't exist (or, even though there is one, many men don't follow the laws.). As a result, the mother ends up raising her children in extreme poverty... In this photo, none of these beautiful three girls has a father. Their three mothers are experiencing the exact story that is described above... USA No this is not a new Font. It's a simple trick if you use Photoshop. Put the USA in big black letters, I used Rockwell Extra Bold, on a flag. Adjust them so you get the red on the top and the bottom. Then with the Flag over the letters, and only those two layers active, go to the Layers Palette menu and click on "Create Clipping Mask", and it puts it on a transparent background for you. I put a blue 2 pixel stroke on the letters to keep the white strokes from blending in with the white background that Flickr gives you to post on. Just hold down the CTRL key and click the layer with the letters, this puts a selection on the letters, then go to Edit and stroke. Of course you can use any letters with any background using this method. Press the letter "L" to see this Large on Black Yerington House. Carson City. Nevada. USA. acampadavalencia We are living a historical moment, an unprecedented case in our recent democracy. Thanks to the massive support provided by all the citizens, we have been able to transform our anger into hope, and this hope will help us change all the things that upset us. To fulfill this object, we shall not lag behind strength or courage, nor behind the energy need to make true this common project. We must not allow the strength already gained by this civil movement to be belittled by foreign and spurious elements. To prevent this from happening, we propose the following twelve concrete measures; they shall lead us –while we make them happen— to the plural and just democracy that we have set our hearts to obtain. Such democracy should fulfill the following aims: To guarantee that the principles of justice, freedom, equality and pluralism are truly and effectively respected. To make sure that the revenues and economic privileges enjoyed by those who hold a public office are significantly diminished, and that permanent banning from such offices (and the impossibility of their being reelected) is applied to those who have been found guilty by justice. To put forward a thorough reform of the election law, whereby proportional representation shall be guaranteed; whereby no political force nor social demand shall be discriminated; whereby the effective inclusion of minority parties shall put an end to the dictatorship of two parties; whereby, finally, the 5% barrier impeding numerous groups representation shall be pull down. To insist and improve the mechanisms (such as holding a referendum) allowing the people to exert direct democracy in relation to decisions involving important socio-economic concerns. Likewise, devices enabling legislation through popular initiative must be simplified. To hold, on a compulsory basis, state, regional and local budgets to popular consultation. To supervise the separation of powers through a system of checks and balances (or through its revision whenever such system is already functioning), in order to guarantee the total independence of the judiciary. To ensure that services such as the management of energy resources, communication networks, food supplies, transport and the banking system (all of which satisfy needs of vital importance for the well-being of the people) are granted the status of “goods of public usefulness”. In accordance, private monopolies and oligarchies in the provision of such goods shall be precluded. To grant the right to labor, to holding a worthy and stable employment. No labor force adjustment plans shall be applied whenever a firm ears benefits. Every member of society has the right to enjoy the social and public services that are vital to make a life worth living. To implement the civil mechanisms whereby corruption in public office can be prevented and punished adequately. Conditions should be provided for, so that an effective civil control of the economic activities carried out by public officials can be exercised, as well as for the implementation of a set of incompatibilities to disable such officials to exercise simultaneously public and private activities, and benefit from both. To enforce a progressive tax regulation, and to impose on an international scale a single tax on immense fortunes, as well as on finance transactions. Obviously, tax havens must be dissolved worldwide. To provide for the people’s strict control and supervision of banking entities and their practices, especially of the latter’s abusive conditions imposed on credit concessions and house mortgages. For these measures to become true and transform reality accordingly, we press for the calling of a Constituent Assembly, as the only proper means to assure that these measures acquire force of law. The latter are no set of definitive measures, however, hence they are subject to revision. They are but the prompt response delivered from someone who had never made proposals, but have been challenged to do so. Those who have systematically ignored their own commitments even while the ink still lay fresh in their political programs, now are challenging us to present our own political programs, and stand by them. So be it. Those who never shared their power or their influence with us, nor helped us intervene in the taking of decisions, now demand from us transparency in our debates, and open participation. Those who owe millions and millions, and keep them in their credit accounts, demand ideas from us who live in the open, under plastic tents and cardboard boxes, among deprivation and unemployment, under a mountain of debts and mortgages. The reason why they need our ideas and proposals is because they are no longer in power, because the power is now among us. It is being held between all of us. They need ideas as vampires, blood.?They need certainties and need them fast, for their time is coming to an end while it is starting for us. Time is on our side Millon Dollar Theater Million Dollar Theater (Los Angeles) Historical Background 1918, Joseph Mora. 307 S. Broadway The Million Dollar Theater stands at the southwest corner of Fourth and Broadway as a living monument to the economic and social changes that have occurred in downtown since 1918. A marquee, extending out from the building over the sidewalk, announces that the ground floor was designed as a movie theater. Rising above the theater are twelve stories of what originally were office suites. When viewing the building from the west, you can see "Metropolitan Water District" painted in a soft brown band just below the roof line. This sign proclaims not what is here, but memorializes what was here. Instead of offices of the Metropolitan Water District, the visitor will now find apartments, and instead of a movie theater, the visitor will find an auditorium that was previously used as a church. Homer Laughlin formed the Stability Company to construct the complex, and invited Sid Grauman to develop and operate the theater. The theater was initially called the "Grauman's Theater"(1) but it opened as the Million Dollar Theater with the premiere of "The Silent Man" on February 1, 1918. The new name epitomized the glamour and romance of Hollywood and the extravagant ostentatious wealth that had already become associated with the movie industry. A year after opening the theater, Grauman introduced "prologues" to the bill, which were live stage presentations "designed to enhance the film that would follow."(2) These nationally acclaimed productions continued until sound movies came in during the late 1920s. Grauman later acquired other theaters on Broadway before opening his two best known theaters, the Egyptian and Chinese, in Hollywood. Grauman began a tradition at the landmark Chinese Theater and left a world-famous attraction by preserving for posterity the footprints and handprints of Hollywood's greatest stars in cement. By the 1960s, the Million Dollar Theater reflected the changing ethnic composition of Broadway shoppers by including Spanish language movies and showcasing live Mexican performers in the program. This period of the theater's rich history is preserved in the sidewalk, where plaques identifying Mexican entertainers who performed during the 1960s through the 1980s are embedded. Large movie theaters have always been expensive to operate and the Million Dollar was no exception. After struggling to keep the theater open, the owner, Bruce Crown, finally closed it in the 1990s. The auditorium was used by the Universal Church until 1998.(3) The office building's history is separate from the theater. Originally, it housed offices of the Edison Company and the municipal water department (the predecessor of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power) and its head, William Mulholland, whose office was located on the top floor. With the departure of banks and law firms from Broadway and Spring Street, the suites in the office tower were abandoned, except for an occasional use as a setting for a movie. In the 1990s, as part of the redevelopment of the entire building, the vacant offices were converted into apartments. Though movies came to Broadway in 1910 when Clune's Broadway (528 S. Broadway) opened as a nickelodeon, it was the opening of the Pantages and the Orpheum (later renamed the Palace) as the region's premiere vaudeville houses, that anchored the city's theater district on the street. Vaudeville matinees and family oriented programs appealed to women who arrived by trolley to shop in the large department stores and specialty clothing shops that lined Broadway from Fourth to Eighth.(4) The Million Dollar Theater, as the first movie palace in Los Angeles, symbolized the respectability movies had acquired in the middle class.(5) Beginning in New York with the Roxy in 1915, movie palaces were richly decorated theaters that quickly became an important part of the movie going experience as seeing the movie itself. When the nation-wide construction boom of movie palaces ended with the Great Depression and changing consumer tastes, Broadway had the largest concentration of movie palaces in the world. The two buildings making up the Million Dollar Theater--the 2345 seat theater designed by William L. Woollett and the twelve story tower designed by Albert C. Martin--are wrapped in a lush Churriqeuresque facade expressing faith, hope and fantasy. Integrated into this architecture is a band of eight statues framed by niches in the third story. These statues (six facing Broadway and two overlooking Third Street) capture the sensuality and exoticism associated with the film industry. Dancers, writers, actors, musicians, technicians and artists are portrayed in Egyptian, South Sea, Renaissance and medieval costumes as symbols of the talents, technology and specialization that had evolved by 1917 in the movie industry. Remembering Begum Tazeen Faridi - seen here with her siblings and mother Begum Tazeen Faridi (1920-2010) who passed away peacefully on January 2, after a brief illness, was among the pioneering women of her generation. She had a vibrant, lively personality, an infinite capacity for hard work, a fine enquiring mind, and an undying passion for social justice. During her long and distinguished career, she was awarded the Sitara-e-Khidmat, the Tamagha-e-Quaid-e-Azam and her many appointments included President of APWA, Vice-President of International Council of Women and Sindh Minister of Social Welfare. But to me, she was Phupijan, my father’s (Isha’at Habibullah) younger sister and a kindred spirit, with a wonderful sense of the absurd, an ability to laugh at herself. She was someone I could chat to endlessly. She wrote a book in 1960, The Changing Role of Women in Pakistan, and as a child, I often saw newspaper articles written by her which my father would comment upon proudly, and which were usually related to social issues. Phupijan was born in Lucknow in 1920, the year her three older brothers were sent away to school in England. My grandfather Sheikh Mohammed Habibullah was Taluqdar of Oudh and deeply involved in the social and political issues of the day. My grandmother, Begum Inam Habibullah, a Muslim League activist discarded purdah after marriage, corresponded with feminists in Egypt and Turkey and established women’s schools and colleges. She was a profound influence on her daughter Tazeen, whose exceptional intelligence emerged early, as is recorded in my grandmother’s Safarnama Europe about their trip to England. My grandmother writes proudly of her clever little daughter, who charmed everyone with her fluent English and her winning extrovert ways. Typically Phupijan found this description absolutely hilarious. On a more serious note she reminded me often that my grandmother had fought for her to attend a normal school and join Lucknow University where she stood first, received a Gold Medal, and also did her master’s degree (whereas my grandfather had wanted her to be educated at home, followed by finishing school in Switzerland). In 1938, she became the first Muslim woman to be elected as President of the Lucknow University Students’ Union — and she led pickets against the Vice-Chancellor (her father!). She also joined the Muslim League, and played an active role in the All India Muslim League Students Federation and related political activities. By this time, my grandmother had been elected to the UP Legislative Assembly and had established the women’s wing of the Muslim League. Phupijan first saw Karachi, her future home in 1944. She arrived here, as a newlywed, on a posting with her incredibly dashing and good looking husband, A.R. Faridi, an officer in the Royal Indian Navy. Shortly after World War II, he joined Burmah Shell and ultimately became its first Pakistani Chairman — later he headed the Pakistan Steel Mills. The Faridis were posted in Dhaka and Rawalpindi before moving to Karachi in the 1950s. In the aftermath of the Partition riots, Phupijan worked extensively with Kashmir refugee rehabilitation, played a prominent role in APWA which formally came into being in 1949; she became APWA’s secretary general in 1956: it was to be a lifelong association. She told me that in Begum Ra’ana Liaquat Ali Khan she found “a surrogate mother-figure”, who encouraged her, trained her and honed her skills. In Karachi, Phupijan’s many projects in health and education sectors included a three-year stint with a UN scheme in the poorest areas of Lyari: often she travelled there and back on a donkey cart, to the shock and horror of other company wives. From 1956 to ‘67, Phupijan worked with The Planning Commission where she set up the first welfare sector in the planning board. She represented Pakistan at the 14th session of the Status of Women’s Commission and was actively involved in the women’s movement, spearheaded by APWA, which led to The Family Laws Ordinance passed by Ayub Khan. She was associated with many other organisations, ranging from The Red Crescent to the Fatimid Foundation, and her vision for integrated development was reflected in her extensive work, including literacy projects, child welfare, population control and small industries. Despite all this, she managed an extraordinarily difficult balancing act between her demanding professional interests and her role as a supportive wife and caring mother. She kept a beautiful home, entertained well and was a great cook — an interest she shared with my father. She was a woman with an infinite capacity for life and to engage with people of all ages. Her children, Shahla, Tasmeen and Taufiq, speak of her as a joyful mother who taught them to love and care for others. My daughters always delighted in the fact that Tazeen Nani was always there at all their important school functions, albeit in her capacity as an august member of the Karachi Grammar School Board. In the last week of her life, when she was sud Red Families v. Blue Families Red Families v. Blue Families identifies a new family model geared for the post-industrial economy. Rooted in the urban middle class, the coasts and the "blue states" in the last three presidential elections, the Blue Family Paradigm emphasizes the importance of women's as well as men's workforce participation, egalitarian gender roles, and the delay of family formation until both parents are emotionally and financially ready. By contrast, the Red Family Paradigm--associated with the Bible Belt, the mountain west, and rural America--rejects these new family norms, viewing the change in moral and sexual values as a crisis. In this world, the prospect of teen childbirth is the necessary deterrent to premarital sex, marriage is a sacred undertaking between a man and a woman, and divorce is society's greatest moral challenge. Yet, the changing economy is rapidly eliminating the stable, blue collar jobs that have historically supported young families, and early marriage and childbearing derail the education needed to prosper. The result is that the areas of the country most committed to traditional values have the highest divorce and teen pregnancy rates, fueling greater calls to reinstill traditional values. Featuring the groundbreaking research first hailed in The New Yorker, this penetrating book will transform our understanding of contemporary American culture and law. The authors show how the Red-Blue divide goes much deeper than this value system conflict--the Red States have increasingly said "no" to Blue State legal norms, and, as a result, family law has been rent in two. The authors close with a consideration of where these different family systems still overlap, and suggest solutions that permit rebuilding support for both types of families in changing economic circumstances. Incorporating results from the 2008 election, Red Families v. Blue Families will reshape the debate surrounding the culture wars and the emergence of red and blue America. Lord Hamilton to Holyrood - McKenzie Friends sit behind litigants (no they dont) You asked what, in the light of Lord Gill's Review, is the position of the Court of Session on the introduction of a McKenzie Friend". As you will be aware, this expression, which owes its origin to English procedure, can be used in two senses : in its original sense it referred to an individual assisting a party litigant by sitting behind him or her in court and assisting that litigant by making notes, helping with case papers or quietly giving advice on the conduct of the case, as well as providing moral support in court (Civil Courts Review, Chapter 11, para 42). Contrary to the apparent understanding of the petitioner in this petition, the Scottish Courts - certainly the Court of Session, and, I understand, also the Sheriff Courts - have never had any difficulty with such assistance being provided; it is the existing practice of the Court to permit it; there is no need for its "introduction". It is, of course subject to the control of the presiding judge, who, if the facility were being abused, would be entitled to stop it. In England and Wales matters have, as the Civil Courts Review notices, op cit. been taken further. Section 27(2)(c) of the Courts and Legal Services Act 1990 envisages that a court in England or Wales may - perhaps in furtherance of a pre-existing common law facility - grant a right of audience in relation to particular proceedings . This may be done ona discretionary basis (see izzo v Philip Ross & Co (a firm), [2002] BPIR 310, where it was described by Neiberger J as "an indulgence"). That , if authorised in Scotland, would allow an individual granted such rights to address the court on behalf of the lay litigant. (There are conflicting views in the Outer House as to whether the court has already at common law such a power - see Civil Courts Review, Chapter 11, para 43. There is no Inner House authority in favour of the court having such a power). The Judges of the Court of Session would have no objection in principle to such a discretionary power being available - though the discretion would require to be carefully exercised to avoid disruption to court business and injustice to other parties. Fresh rights of audience in Scotland have previously been conferred by primary legislation (see Law Reform Miscellaneous Provision) (Scotland) Act 1990 section 24 ("solicitor advocates") and section 25 )members of professional and other bodies. The judges are of the view that, if an equivalent to section 27(2)(c) of the Courts and Legal Services Act 1990 (or its common law source) is to be recognised in Scotland, this should be done by primary legislation. If that were done, it may be that the exercise of the discretion could be regulated by the rules of court. I hope this is of assistance. Lord Gill Civil Courts Review Chapter 11 paragraph 42 McKenzie Friends Current position 41. As a general rule parties in Scotland are entitled to represent themselves in court or be represented in the sheriff court by a solicitor or a member of the Faculty of Advocates, and in the Court of Session by a member of the Faculty of Advocates or by a solicitor advocate. 16 Under the procedures for small claims and summary causes, a party may be represented by an authorised lay representative, if the sheriff considers the representative to be a suitable person. 17 A party can generally represent only himself and not, for example, a group of which he purports to be a spokesman. 42. In Chapter 6 of the Consultation Paper we asked whether a person without a right of audience should be entitled to address the court on behalf of a party litigant and, if so, in what circumstances. This relates to a trend in the courts in England and Wales where, for over 30 years, party litigants have been allowed assistance in court from what have become known as “McKenzie friends”. 18 McKenzie friends do not take on the role of a lawyer, but may give assistance by making notes, helping with case papers or quietly giving advice on the conduct of the case, as well as providing moral support in court. Sections 27 and 28 of the Courts and Legal Services Act 1990 provide the court with a discretionary power to grant rights of audience to a lay individual. A court may therefore grant a McKenzie friend a right of audience in exceptional circumstances, provided an application is made at the start of a hearing. This has happened on occasion. 19 43. Many party litigants are assisted in conducting their litigation before the Court of Session by friends and acquaintances, who sit behind them in court. 20 The practice of the Scottish Land Court permits McKenzie friends. Differing views have been expressed by Outer House judges as to the competency of permitting a person assisting a party litigant to address the Court on the party litigant’s behalf. In Kenneil v Kenneil21 Lord Glennie, granting an application for a wife to represent her husband who was otherwise unrepresented at the hearing, found that the Court of Session has discretion to allow a lay person to speak for a party litigant. He emphasised, however, that such representation should be allowed only in Related topics: power of attorney laws by state attorneys dallas texas new york city injury attorneys attorneys in utah dental legal advice ventura personal injury attorney legal advice website |

The Bellu Manor 1 I. The Bellu Manor is a mid-19th century old Romanian style architecture monument. It belonged to the family of Baron Alexandru Bellu. The family were originally Aromanians from the Macedonian Pindus, from the town of Pella (birthplace of Alexander the Great), who had settled in Romania around 1780. Apparently, the buildings of the initial complex date back to about the same time -- only perhaps a few decades later. The residence in Urlati was closest to the hearts of the Bellu family. In Wallachia, the Bellus made a fortune and became related to important local families of boyars (local aristocrats), such as the Cantacuzino, Vacarescu, Campineanu, Sturdza, and other old Romanian families. Thus Alexandru Bellu's grandfather, who lived in the 1900s, married Irina Vacarescu, then concluded a matrimonial alliance with Eliza Stirbei, daughter of Prince Barbu Stirbei -- and the examples may continue. Alexandru Bellu (1850-1921), one of the family's last important members, was a man of culture, a lawyer, coin collector, and photographer -- one of the forerunners of Romanian photography (his photographs of Romanian peasants were reproduced in the album "La Roumanie en images", published in Paris, in 1919). Endowed with a refined taste, and good friends with famous Romanian painter Nicolae Grigorescu, Alexandru Bellu collected various porcelaine items, paintings, silverware, and furniture pieces from all over the world. All the items that are found now in the Museum are special and of priceless value. Some of them date back to the 2nd and 3rd centuries. Bellu and Grigorescu were such good friends, that they had come to influence each other in everything they did. There seems to be even a serious question about the latter's "Oxen cart": was it actually Bellu who photographed it first and then Grigorescu painted it, or did Grigorescu paint it and Bellu was inspired by it upon admiring the work? Hard to tell, as this seems to be a dilemma that not even specialists have been able to sort out. 5th Dist. Appelate Courthouse This evening shot has been tonemapped I do have another shot of this building at night if your interested. Located in the center of Mt. Vernon, the Appellate Courthouse is a treasure awaiting discovery. The Courthouse was built around 1857 in the Greek revival style. Anyone interested in historic buildings and architecture won't want to miss this building and the beautiful courtroom appointed with walnut benches and judges' chairs along with other period furnishings. The Courthouse currently houses the Fifth District Appellate Court for the State of Illinois. The Abe Lincoln Connection One of the favorite U.S. presidents, Abraham Lincoln, argued cases at this location including a tax case where he represented Illinois Central Railroad. The Building and The Ox-cart Local legend has that it took three weeks to bring the twin wrought iron stairways on the outside front of the building from St. Louis to Mt. Vernon via ox-cart. The building is a two-story brick built in the shape of a Maltese Cross. It has simple classic lines with two fluted pillars supporting the front gable in the center of which is a medallion of the scales of justice. Visitors will find rooms with extremely high ceilings, arched openings in the inner walls, and wide woodwork. Originally, the rooms were heated by huge fireplaces. The ground floor contains four bedrooms with private baths for the use of the justices when they are in Mt. Vernon and an apartment for the clerk. The second floor has the courtroom, the clerk's office, the judges' conference room, and the attorneys' waiting room. Emergency Hospital and Clara Barton Hospital records in Mt. Vernon show that at the time of the tornado on February 19, 1888, an emergency hospital was housed in the building under the supervision of Clara Barton, the founder of the American Red Cross. The Appellate Court, Fifth District The Fifth District Appellate Court is in session throughout the year and sits periodically as its judicial business requires. Historic American Building The appellate courthouse was selected by the Advisory Committee of the Historic American Building Survey as possessing exceptional historic and architectural interest and as being worthy of the most careful preservation for the benefit of future generations. A record of its appearance and condition has been made and deposited for permanent reference in the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Telecommute... if only! I actually did telecommute last week and it was a bit creepy as our client makes it seem like your work machine has taken over your home machine. Still, I could get used to it, just fine! Telecommute. ...so I told myself I'd drink at least one Nalgene bottle of water a day during the new year...but caffeine is still king in the mornings.
