A Late Victorian Block Fronted Villa - Coburg
This smart late Victorian single storey villa in the inner northern Melbourne suburb of Coburg is block fronted (meaning it is built of wood, but the wood is cut so as to mimic brick).
Built between the 1880s and the 1890s, the middle-class owners of this villa were determined that they were able to afford the respectability of brick, even if they couldn't really! The house, with its two chimneys is set back from the street, amid a lovely garden, including a well clipped hedge and iceberg roses. The villa is a decent size, has a bull nosed verandah and lovely sash windows. It also has typical Victorian decoration under the gable.
A house like this would have suited a large Victorian family of the middle or upper-middle classes who could afford servants that gracious Victorian domestic happiness required.
