Jomolhari trek

Jomolhari trek

The Jumolhari Trek

The Jumolhari Trek takes you from 2,600m up to 4,000m and even 5,224m if you choose and is the most popular route taken. This is partly because of its access to Paro and Thimphu and the fact that it is of moderate difficulty. In addition, the duration of the trek is ideal for most visitors. There are several variation of route but a trek to Jumolhari can last from 7 nights to 9 nights and offers flexibility in tour itineraries.

The Chance to trek to the base of the impressive Jumolhari Mountain, beautiful campsites and the amazing views of Mountain Jichu Drakey, Jho Drakey, Tshering Gang and Masang-Gang are the other reasons why this trek deserves it reputation.

Day 01: Arrive Paro (By Druk Air):
The flight into Paro on our national carrier, Druk Air, is a befitting introduction to the spectacular beauty of our country. In clear weather, magnificent views of the world’s highest peaks, give way to the lush green Paro valley as you land. On arrival at Paro international airport, you will be received by our representative and will escort you to hotel. In the after noon visit is Ta Dzong, an ancient watchtower, which now houses the National Museum. Below the museum is the Paro Rimpung Dzong, the centre of civil and religious authority in this valley. A short walk takes you to the base of the dzong and across a traditional cantilevered, covered bridge. A short distance further is one of the innumerable archery grounds. (Archery is the national sport of Bhutan). If we are lucky, we may catch a match in action.
Overnight – Hotel in Paro.

Day 2 Hike to Taksang (Tiger Nest) then Paro valley sightseeing
Right after the breakfast drive towards the road point to Taktshang. Taktshang Monastery, the most famous of Bhutan's monasteries. Taktshang means "Tiger's Nest," so named because Guru Rimpoche reportedly flew to the site of the monastery on the back of a flying tiger in the late centuries of the first millennium. The monastery is perched on a cliff nearly 3,000 ft above the Paro valley floor. This day hike is not only historically and culturally interesting, but also incredibly scenic! It takes about two hours to reach the cafeteria, which gives a breathtaking view of the Tiger’s Nest. If you still feel like hiking then you can take another hour to reach the temple. Then return back to hotel and free evening.Overnight – Hotel in Paro

Day 3 Drukgyel Dzong(Paro) – Shana
Altitude: 2,500m/2820m (Total Alitude Gain: 320m), Duration 5 hours, Distance 15 Km. Level of Difficulty: Easy.

Starting form Drukgyel Dzong, the fortress that once guarded Paro Valley against Tibetan inviders, the first day is a pleasant walk following the left side of the Pachu River. The farm road serves as the trek route and passes through a number of very small villages with traditional houses, rice and vegetable fields to left and right of the trail.

After about an hour’s walk, the farm road ends at Mitsizamp. Crossing a bridge to the right side of the river, the trail climbs very gradually for another hour through the trees to Zakhapang (2,600m), where nice lunch break-spot in an open and clean space is found. After lunch the trek continues through blue pine forests, following the river closely. Gunyitsawa army outpost appears not long before the end of the first day’s trek. The campsite at Shana, just beyond, is situated at an altitude of 2,820m in a beautiful open space surrounded by blue pine forest. Two traditional houses on the other side of the wide, fast-flowing river make up Shana village.

Day 4 Shana-Soi Thangthangka

Altitude: 2,820m/3,580m (Total Alitude Gain: 760m), Duration 8 hours, Distance 16 Km. Level of Difficulty: Long but not difficult, Muddy and bumpy path.

This is the longest trekking day, taking eight hours to reach the campsite. The trail continues to follow the river gradually ascending through a mixed forest of blue pine and oak and, later in the afternoon, tall rhododendron trees, birch, fir and maple. Though the trail is rocky and bumpy path, it is not strenuous but in rainy conditions it can be quite muddy. There are several simple wooden bridges to cross and sometimes the river reaches right up to the trail. The lunch break comes after about 4 hours of walking through an ever-narrowing valley: Shing Karap or Thombuzam are popular stopping places at around 3,305m.

Several trails leads in other directions, such as the trail to Tremo la, which was the old salt-trading route to Tibet. Not long before reaching the campsite the trail leads you up a ridge with a chorten. Beyond, in the distance, at the end of the valley the Jumolhari Mountain comes into view. Finally, after an 8 hours walk, you reach the campsite.

The camp site is located in spacious clearing and directly faces Mount Jumolhari. The view of early morning sun striking the tip of Jumolhari is breathtaking. Mount Jumolhari, at 7326, is among the world’s highest mountains.

Barbershop Dip- Lower Salem Ohio

Barbershop Dip- Lower Salem Ohio

I stopped to take a few shots as I was passing through the village of Lower Salem Ohio and came across its corner barbershop. As it was closed I stuck the camera up to the glass on the door and took a shot. I would have preferred that the television wasnt included in the picture but I couldnt crop it out without taking part of the chair. There is also a slight reflection on the right side of the picture. Someone may live upstairs in the old building, maybe the barber himself. I was happy to find the Pepsi machine in front working and the Mt. Dew was cold as ice. US Route 821 makes a big turn up the hill to the left and intersects County Road 145 here. CR 145 was where I had been but I couldnt pass up a few shots of the little town. I used to come here with friends when I was very young. The 2000 census listed Lower Salem having a population of 109 with 36 households and 27 families.

Fanboy Wars Heating Up

Fanboy Wars Heating Up

So the ZuneHD was released yesterday and some Microsoft Fanboy decided to walk into the lion's den at AppleInsider and post this spec list comparing the ZuneHD and iPod Touch (MS Fanboys love spec sheets).

And of course, the list fixed the comparisons in a way that the ZuneHD could win, but what's notable here is the rather quick response by an Apple Fanboy, who posted the same spec list with some much needed alterations. As you can see above.

The original spec comparison was notable for several obvious fallacies. First of all, the idea that regular non-geek consumers buy gadgets based on overall usability instead of spec sheets is an idea that Apple Haters just don't get. There has been a boatload of devices that have been released that had better specs than both the iPod touch and iPhone. Most of them have done absolutely nothing in the market.

It seems to me that spec comparisons also leave out the importance of a built-in ecosystem. For example, Windows consistently beats out OS X and Linux, NOT because it's better, but because it's everywhere. All the PC manufacturers have licensed it. Businesses require it. That kind of ecosystem lock-in is just too hard to break.

So of course, the MS Fanboy had to ignore iTunes to make his point work. He also had to ignore the 75,000 apps available for the iPhone/iPod touch.

One of the most interesting things to me in this whole Zune versus iPod war is the idea that the iPod is only popular, according to MS Fanboys, because the iPod is sexy. According to this theory, people buy iPods because of aesthetics (looks) and nothing more.

And yet, the Zunes that have come before have without a doubt been absolutely beautiful. And based on my personal opinion of Microsoft's history with hardware, that's an enormous compliment. Of course, the fact that Zunes have all been beautiful machines (except for the first version obviously) and have still failed to capture the attention of casual buyers, puts this tired meme to bed.

The ZuneHD looks good, but may suffer from the same problem.

For years, the rallying cry of PC enthusiasts has been that Macs are pretty, but not functional and hey, Windows HAS MORE APPS! So it's fairly ironic that the Apple Fanboys can now make the same argument for the iPod.

'As found' today at the local car boot sale (at the former Slough Town Football Club!); a Dave Russell racer, with Campagnolo Gran Sport derailleurs, Stronglight cranks, T.A. chainring,'Terrible' brand pedals & saddle, etc., etc. I'll only change the pedals, saddle, & tyres! It's only travelled 4 miles from his shop in the Chalvey area of Slough!
Just found the serial no., it's 531367- I assume this means it was made from Reynolds 531 tubing, in March 1967 (no customers' initials to be seen!)? The remains of the head transfer mention Slough, Bucks (Buckinghamshire), so it has to be before 1974, anyway! (we're in Berkshire, now!)

We prepare to cross this flooded slough and the group revolts. John [The Pastor] simply stops and says “Nuh-Uh”. He ain’t going. The rest of the group, prune-footed and tired, elect to hang a left and head to the welcome center.

Surviving

Homeless, thats what they call us,
they say we have no home, because we live out on the streets, and choose to drift and roam. But homeless is what we truley are, but what about the heros, the women, and the kids? Some say we chose this life of freedom, to live out on our own, to sleep beneath the stars at night, to live our lives alone.
Some say a home is where your heart is, and we pray that this is true, cause some of us have spilt our blood, and its red, white, and blue.
Some say that we are crazy, that we sold our souls to cheap, because we'll sell our bodies, just so our kids can eat.
But if you think we chose this life, then its you who has lost your mind, to suggest that we woke up one day and said " I'll leave it ALL behind".
To live a life of a prostitute, an addict, or a drunk, to wear the same clothes every day that we carry in a trunk.
To sell our bodies like a peice of meat, because we cannot cope, to beg all day, every day just to buy the dope.
To watch the people laugh at us, to look right into our face, who forget that we are there, unless we are in their space.
Like when we beg for food, or break into a house, it won't be for a million dollars, more like a sandwich or a blouse. We might be sick and tired, we may be down and out, but we are somebodies long lost relatives, this world has forgotten about.
The Homeless Creed

At least we had satellite radio in it, along with my cds. We were too tired to do anything really in Las Vegas, when we arrived.
So, that's why I don't really have pics in Vegas the 1st nite. We drove to the Stratosphere to eat the lunch/dinner buffet. And we gambled alittle there too. That's where I lost my $3US in that cheap 1cent slot machine. High roller here. ;P

This is the next morning driving to San Diego, to visit our cousin Apple!

Over 500 miles to Idaho by Bike. Sept - Oct 2007

P9230264. Photo: On the road Colfax to Spokane, WA

A Bike tour From Portland (Troutdale) to Bonner's Ferry, Idaho. Eleven days of riding 530 miles (plus 40 miles of hitching). The return was made on the Empire Builder Amtrak train at Sandpoint, ID.

For the tour Matt and Carye bought new custom built Bike Friday (www.bikefriday.com) folding bikes that are made in Eugene, Oregon. Neither Carye or Matt own cars, so investing in a reliable, flexible bike for travel was important. However the bikes arrived two days before leaving, so getting used to new bikes while on the road, was literally a pain in the butt! By the end of the trip, gears, seat and handle bar placement, and proper riding shoes were figured out. Everyday of the ride had awesome weather (not too hot, not rainy), and Carye and Matt met many friendly people, ate as much pizza and icecream as desired, and enjoyed some beautiful scenery (though Washington wheat fields get dull to the eyes after 20 miles). The fourth day brought bad luck - 4 flats (at once!) caused by Goathead thorns, and wind in the face most the day. Also a family of earwigs hitched a ride in C & M's camping gear, and it took about a week to finally see the last one. Idaho is a cyclist paradise (what a secret). From The State Border near Coere D'Alene to just before Bonner's Ferry, there were many bike paths, nice scenery, and most flat routes.

Day 1:Troutdale to Hood River (55.6 miles)
Highlights: Gorgeous Columbia River (Get the bike map from ODOT). Ride to Council Crest, Ride by Falls, bike-ped paths on the old historic highway.

The campground listed on the bike map for Hood River was not there. We decided to treat ourselves and stayed at the Hood River downtown hotel. Hood River is a super nice town - though sad the Carousel Art Museum is closed and moving elsewhere. Also on this route, between Cascade Locks and Wyeth, do not take the Wyeth Bench Rd (aka Herman Creek Rd), it is a horrible grade hill, and you are better off taking the I-84. Note about I-84, it's not the most pleasant experience, but it's not bad, In order to bike to Hood River, you will need to get on I-84 at several points - The shoulder is pretty wide at most places, and it's a good idea to wear some bright orange!

Day 2: Hood River to Maryhill, WA (52.5 miles)
Highlights: The old historic highway section is really neat: it goes through the Mosier Tunnels (now just for ped/bike), The section through Mosier town, and to Rowena's Crest was on low traffic streets. No need to get on I-84 at all all the way to the Dalles.

The crossing over to Washington on the bridge in the Dalles was difficult. It was so windy and the sidewalk so narrow we had to walk. Biking to hwy 14 across the wind was also difficult. But once on hwy 14 heading East, the wind was at our bikes, and we cruised past the Maryhill Museum (Too late in the day to stop!) and stayed at the Maryhill State Park (back down by the river).

Day 3: Maryhill to Crow Butte (58.2 miles)
Highlights: Cruising sometimes 20 miles an hour easily with the wind at our back on Hwy 14. Lovely more deserty scenery, waving to trains. A Stop at Stonehenge.

From the campground, we hitched a ride in a pickup back up the top of the hill to hwy 14. The road was a major truck route, and the shoulder was pretty much missing for the first section of the hill, we decided htiching was the safest option. We enjoyed stopping at America's Stonehenge. I had been there before, but never thought I'd bike all the way! Crow Butte park was father than we thought. We could see it, but then had to ride about 4 miles all the way around and out to it. The RV park was expensive, and did not offer "primitive camper" sites.

Day 4: Crow Butte, WA to Hat Rock Park, OR
Highlights: Early morning hike past deer to the top of Crow Butte. Discovering the way over the I-82 - there is a bike route, but you need to go on the may freeway before the bike route appears, then you exit, cross under and go over on the otherside. Umatilla was nice little town to check out. At first we were excited about the Lewis & Clark Bike/Ped Bath, but it turned into a bad situation.

The wind in the gorge changed from E to W today, so we had to push hard for 20 miles, going about 5-8 miles an hour. Very hard reality after the day before. The road moved away from the Gorge and was now less interesting. Onion (Walla Walla) trucks passed us all day, leaving onion skin trails. We crossed back to Oregon, and instead of the main road decided to follow the Lewis & Clark trail to Hat Rock State Park. Unfortunately it turned into a bad idea. The path was badly marked and kept changing from paved to shared road, to bark-dirt to gravel. After a gravel section we discovered that we had rode through thorns and had 4 flats at once. We pulled out 15-30 thorns and only had two new tubes, One tube needed to be patched 7 times. We were able to ride out to the main road and hitched a ride with a priest. The S
