Neo-Assyrian, in Phoenician Style, Ivory Furniture Adornment of a Nubian with Oryx, Monkey, and Leopard Skin

Ivory; 8th-7th century B.C.E.; Excavated at Fort Shalmaneser, Nimrud (ancient Kalhu), Mesopotamia

Furniture decorated with carved ivory plaques was a symbol of wealth throughout the Near East during the early first millennium B.C. The ivories were carved in the major centers of Phoenicia—along the eastern Mediterranean coast—as well as in Syria and the Assyrian plains. Assyrian conquests beginning in the ninth century B.C. brought richly decorated furniture as booty and tribute from the cities of Syria and Phoenicia, and craftsmen taken prisoner from these cities probably continued to carve ivories on the Assyrian coast.
Some Phoenician-style ivories are solid plaques, while others are carved on one or both sides in a delicate openwork technique. Many originally were covered by gold leaf and inlaid with semiprecious stones or colored glass. Such rich combinations of ivory, gold, and brightly colored stones made the thrones of the Assyrian kings famous for their exquisite beauty. Most ivories carved in the Phoenician style were probably produced during the late eighth and seventh centuries B.C.
Phoenician ivory carvers were strongly influenced by the themes and style of Egyptian art owing to longstanding ties between the two cultures. Some Phoenician ivories illustrate purely Egyptian themes, but many use Egyptian motifs in entirely original compositions.
This Nubian tribute bearer exhibits traits of the Phoenician style, characterized by the slender, elongated form of the bearer and his animal gifts, the precision of carving and intricacy of detail, and the distinct Egyptian flavor of both pose and features.

~day 312: Giver of Love~

When I first became an expectant mother, my number one biggest fear was that, somehow, I was going to lose my focus on God---maybe even, that I would lose God. This fear, for me, outweighed all the other major anxieties (and even phobias) I had surrounding pregnancy, childbirth and the medical treatments inherent to both. If only I had God--loved God--knew God--the rest would seem doable.

Why was I so beset with this fear? Well, I'm still a 'young' convert, and in formation. At the time of first realising I was pregnant, it had only been just over a year since I myself had been 'born,' and given new life in Christ. I wondered whether I was secure enough in that life to be able to transmit it to someone else.

But one of the biggest problems was my observation of other women. Perhaps it's a sign of the times, but I just didn't like the examples of motherhood I was often confronted by. Mothers seemed either to neglect their children for selfish reasons, or to let their children become the ultimate vehicle for selfishness---mothers who lost sight of the world outside their own family, of the contribution they still had to make as an individual human being and not just as a mother, mothers who treated their children as the be-all-and-end-all meaning of life, mothers for whom having children had become an end in itself---basically, mothers who had made idols of their children. I thought maybe this was some kind of unavoidable biological effect that I would inevitably succumb to: losing my God and my individuality in an idol that I would count on to be my only meaning and fulfillment.

You know what? There really are mothers like that out there, but you don't have to become one of them. My fears were pretty unfounded. In fact, it's just like everything else in life. Don't pay attention to other people. Listen to God. He is speaking in your heart and in your conscience. Don't compare yourself to other people...and if you're a mother, don't compare yourself to other mothers. The only mother whose example you should really be paying attention to is the Mother of God. Go with your instinct and trust yourself, and believe in your ability to do the right thing. If before pregnancy, your objective in life was to seek truth and follow it, that basic objective is not going to change.

Well, this may seem pretty obvious to you, the reader. But it wasn't to me. In anxiety, I sought counsel from my spiritual director, Fr. Tony Nye SJ at Farm Street Church, in London. I confessed my fears to him, and togther, my husband and I asked him how we could find God, respond to God, and transmit God in this new phase of life?

His answers were simple and succinct...some practical advice on good examples of Catholic parenting, and the memorable words: 'Go to the Lord through baby.' At first, all I could understand from this was that there was a new method of prayer and meditation I was going to need to learn. It had something to do with gazing into my child's eyes and finding God there---seeing Christ looking back at me.

Over the last few weeks (yes, I'm still pregnant---just reached the halfway mark!), this advice has really begun to unfold itself to me. In the middle of excitement over picking out baby clothes for our daughter, decorating the nursery, arranging the home, or enjoying the prospect of the baby shower, I found myself beset with the constant anxiety: 'Where is God? Have I forgotten Him? Have I been thinking about Him? Am I consumed with things and the human side of life?'

Answer: Well, God is concerned with the human side of life. Why shouldn't I be? But the human side of life and existence finds its place and its fulfillment in God. How can having a baby (with all the girly trimmings) teach me about that?

First, pregnancy brings you down (if you were ever above it) to your most human level. Life becomes basic and simple again. You realise the things that need to be done, and the things that 'want' to be done. In your mind, you watch Mary going about her daily routine in the simplicity of Nazareth. The aspirations of the past evaporate. You realise there's nothing better or more worthwhile to aspire to, than this holy simplicity.

Second, at this very human level, you begin to wonder in awe at the Fatherhood of God. You're not just living human life from the inside anymore. You're seeing it, observing it, pondering it from the outside: from conception to death. You are watching the whole human journey unfold; something we usually think of as being reserved to the sight of God. This is where the question of what it means to be human, and what it means to be God, and how the two are interrelated, arises. Thomas Aquinas' principle of 'exitus' and 'reditus' comes to mind: all things come from God, and are going to God.' And what, or who, is God, you ask?

gooseberries - with recipe!

And put in a pie.”....an old nursery rhyme!

Here they are - all washed and topped and tailed ready to be made in to a franzipan!

Gooseberries are one of my favourite fruits though I've discovered that some people have never eaten them. That’s not altogether surprising because their season is quite short so you don’t see them in supermarkets for long. The best bet is to go to a fruit farm and get them ready picked if you can! The little devils hide amongst wickedly prickly bushes so if you have to pick them yourself go armed with long sleeves and thick gloves and preferably a stick to hold the branches away from you – they really don’t want to get picked!
But the effort is all worth it in the end because you can turn them in to the most fantastic things to eat – gooseberry crumble, gooseberry fool, gooseberry franzipan etc etc
Some can be eaten raw – the red ones are called dessert gooseberries and you can eat them raw - but the ones I like best are these green ones which need to be cooked and with sugar as they are quite sharp.

Gooseberry Franzipan is one of my favourite sins though there is a price to pay similar to chocolate, the penance is much the same.... but so what who cares!!
(The almond flavoured filling is often referred to as frangipane, dates back a long way)

Here’s the recipe if you want to have a go – hope you enjoy it if you do!

Gooseberry Franzipan

French flan pastry
5 oz plain flour
2 oz caster sugar
3 oz butter or marge.
1 standard egg yolk
gooseberries (enough to cover pastry base)
apricot jam

Franzipan
4 oz plain cake crumbs
4 oz caster sugar
4 oz soft marge.
2 eggs
1 teasp. almond essence
1 oz plain flour
1 oz split almonds to decorate

To make the pastry...
Place flour in a bowl. Add sugar, butter and egg yolk and blend together.
Line flan dish / 8” sandwich tin with pastry, keeping remainder for decoration. (I use a slightly bigger, shallower glass dish)

To make the franzipan mixture...
Mix together cake crumbs, sugar, marge, eggs, almond essence and flour and beat well in mixer.

Spread some jam over pastry and cover with gooseberries.

Put in franzipan mixture and smooth it evenly over the gooseberries then make a lattice decoration with strips of pastry with split almonds between the lattice. (If you find there’s not enough pastry for decorating, it really doesn’t matter!)

Bake for approx.1 hr. 10 mins. in the oven – gas mark 4.

Leave to cool, best eaten slightly warm!

New Workspace

Yasmina spent all today rearranging the stuff in the office at home. The simple idea of dropping the shelf down almost to the same level as the desk magically creates a nice huge L shaped desk. Stuff on the shelves has been re-arranged and a little bit of light deco added. Now it's much nicer sitting surfing and working.

Tinsel and several types of garland or ribbon are commonly used to decorate a Christmas tree. Delicate mould-blown and painted coloured glass Christmas ornaments were a specialty of the glass factories in the Ore Mountains in the late 19th century, and have since become a large industry, complete with famous-name designers. Lighting with candles or electric lights (fairy lights) is commonly done, and a tree topper completes the ensemble. Strands of tinsel may be hung in groups from longer branches to simulate icicles, though this trend has gradually fallen off since the late 1970s, due primarily to a cessation of the manufacture of metal tinsel because of environmental concerns, since these icicles were made of lead. I have this innate craving to create and to define our own space. If I didn't love NYC and North Jersey so much, I imagine I'd probably be carting around a scrapbooking tote on Friday nights, in a minivan back in VB, instead of barhopping with my husband.
Like everyone else, time is always scarce, yet I try to do something creative every day, including making and creating some of our Christmas cards. Since I love paper and stationery, but can never seem to find products that truly suit us (and are affordable) I usually try to make things myself. Poker Night

Tyler started a weekly poker night. I missed the first game, but made it to this game.

It was the first time i've ever played poker (Texas hold'em). I didn't do so well; i was more interested in organizing my chips than i was interested in paying attention to the game.

Tyler and Elena were the last two players standing. It was her first time playing as well, but clearly she was more focused than me. They ended up splitting the pot based on their chips due to time constraints.

I was in a mall yesterday over on the mainland that was huge. I enjoyed looking down at some of the Christmas decor and couldn't help but figure this is the largest rocking horse I have ever seen. Look at the two employess who were there rocking it for the riders. What a job!

I was walking around the downtown Santa Cruz area on a Wednesday and came upon the Farmers Market on Ceder Street. The food and natural products are high quality and locally grown. I was unable to get any interesting food shots but this old truck worked nicely. The Hula grill is a surf theme bar and restaurant and the retro style decor is classic. The truck is parked around town to advertise the place.

I like the rusty old black and yellow vintage plate. It gives the truck some character as opposed to some shiny new restored one.

We have an evening of good food planned. Keith and I will recognize the volunteers and present a slide show of this year's accomplishments. This has been a good year with the recent speeder car tour of the old Southern Pacific right-of-way and significant progress on the Diamond and Caldor No. 4 Shay locomotive.

Vizcaya was the winter residence of American industrialist James Deering from Christmas 1916 until his death in 1925. Deering was a Vice President of the International Harvester Company, which produced agricultural equipment for a worldwide market. He chose a bayfront site in Miami for his tropical winter home because of the location’s temperate winter climate and his appreciation of the native hardwood hammock. In addition, his father, William, had already settled in Coconut Grove and his half brother, Charles Deering, would soon develop an estate at Cutler, in what is now south Miami-Dade County. The latter is now operated as The Deering Estate at Cutler.

At the time of Vizcaya’s construction, Miami’s population was around 10,000. More than 1,000 workers were employed in the Vizcaya project, including laborers and craftsmen from the Caribbean and Europe. In addition to the house and gardens, the complex included a farm, livestock, and a variety of other service facilities covering 180 acres on both sides of South Miami Avenue.

Vizcaya’s Designers, the Main House and the Gardens
When he began building his winter home, Deering engaged the assistance of Paul Chalfin, a young New York painter, to supervise the entire project. Deering and Chalfin traveled throughout Europe surveying residential architecture for ideas and obtaining components such as doors, wall panels, mantels and ceilings that would be incorporated into the proposed home. Also working on the project were architect F. Burrall Hoffman and Colombian landscape architect Diego Suarez.

The house was intended to appear as an Italian estate that had stood for 400 years and had been occupied and renovated by several generations of a family. It has 34 decorated rooms with 15th through 19th century antique furnishings and art objects. The house appears to be only two stories high but between the main public rooms and the bedrooms, there is an intervening level with 12 rooms for servants and service. Vizcaya intends to open these rooms to the public in the near future, thereby introducing new stories about those who lived and worked at the house.

The expansive gardens combine elements of Renaissance Italian and French designs. Future programs will place greater emphasis on interpreting and presenting these gardens. Suarez and Chalfin worked for seven years, perfecting the design of the gardens as one vast outdoor room with the elements serving as complementary parts of an integrated area. Key features include the many fountains, a central pool surrounding an elevated island, the elevated Mound with its small house, or “Casino,” statuary, and several themed gardens.

Vizcaya Becomes a Public Museum
After Deering’s death in 1925, a minimal staff maintained the house. The hurricane of 1926, which devastated much of Miami, extensively damaged the house, surrounding grounds and formal gardens. Deering's heirs, Marion Deering McCormick and Barbara Deering Danielson, contacted the estate's original designer, Paul Chalfin, who oversaw the first restoration of Vizcaya in 1933-4. The McCormicks and Danielsons attempted to operate the estate as an attraction, but another major hurricane in 1935 overwhelmed their efforts. Eventually most of the land was sold for development. In 1952, Deering’s heirs generously conveyed the main house and formal gardens to Dade County, for a sum below the actual value. In 1955, The County exercised an option to acquire the village as well. Deering's heirs donated the estate's substantial furnishings and art to the County on condition that Vizcaya be used as a public museum in perpetuity.

Over the years the effects of South Florida’s humid climate and salt air have taken their toll on Vizcaya, necessitating continuous restoration. Although the house’s design allowed the free flow of breezes through the open courtyard, the need to preserve the building and contents required the installation of a climate and humidity control system, including enclosing the open courtyard in glass. Today we can only imagine how Vizcaya felt as an open-air house, with the sounds of birds and the bay, the sudden rain showers, and the fragrance of flowers.
