Leo Kottke Dillo-1976-0281
Leo Kottke @ Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin, TX, May 7, 1976.
~EDIT~
The the first show I ever saw at the Armadillo was July 23, 1971: also Leo Kottke and I was hooked. I have a memoir of that first show below.

Leo Kottke is an American acoustic guitar player (born Sept. 11, 1945 in Georgia), widely known for his innovative fingerpicking style and is a master of his instrument, especially open tunings and 12 string slide guitar. Kottke does instrumentals as well as songs with vocals and draws on influences from blues, folk and jazz music. He is noted for his syncopated, polyphonic melodies and expressive baritone voice. Kottke still tours and 40 albums to his credit. His style has changed a bit over the years, partly due to injuries, but he is still a master.
I have recently discovered after being in contact with other researchers and Bonnie Murray Tamblyn, who opened for Leo, that this was not the show I thought it was. It was an excellent show, but it was not the one I speak about below as my first show. This show was May 7, 1976, I now believe. Sorry for the confusion! I'm doing my best to sort these things out as I go. The memoir still stands, though, but for a show not pictured here.
In 1971, I drove up to Austin because I had heard of this great music hall, The Armadillo World Headquarters, run by some hippies, with great music most nights. I had to check this out! I knew Kottke's music, so when I heard he would be playing that day in July, 1971, I made it the time to check out the scene. I got there a little late, had a little trouble finding it, and a place to park as I maneuvered the car through the vehicle swallowing potholes near the Dillo... I left it somewhere, not sure it was the right place but eager to get inside. The doors were open already, general admission, the place packed, and the sweet smell of weed wafted out the door of this warehouse looking place. I got a beer and wandered around trying to find a place to see... finally taking a few pictures of the opening act on stage, and moving over by the Guacamole Queen to lean against the wall and watch the scene. Leo walked out and made some jokes and proceeded to play the hell out of that 12 string slide guitar. It was amazing to me... it sounded like 5 guys on stage and it was only him. I loved the show and managed to get these few meager shots, but I knew I would be back. I was thrilled the whole 60 mile drive back home that night... I knew I was gonna be back to that place often. As soon as Leo's album "Greenhouse" came out the next year, I bought it and have loved his stuff since. I did go back to the Dillo as often as I could until it closed in 1980, and I miss it still.

If a picture can speak a thousand words then music must be the reason for its voice. Images played in half notes and sixteenth notes beginning on A minor, D7, G, Em repeated not once, not twice, but four times. Taken to its first verse hitting the same chords while the world stops rotating, putting all the attention to the vibrant melody echoing from its fingertips and strings. Eyes closed and your minds opened flashing images of the harmonic tone appeasing through the voice of this photograph: Music.
A minor, D7, G, Em. A minor, D7, G, Em. A minor...D7...G...Em.
Flashing portraits of the summer breeze and sun setting as it reaches its chorus, craving for a calm and refreshing liquid invented - Lemonade.
"She's soothing like, the ocean rushing over the sand.
She takes care of me, and she helps me be a better man.
She's so beautiful. Sometimes I stop to close my eyes.
She's exactly what I need."
So if this photograph can speak a thousand words then music must be the reason for its voice.
