Cotton Pressing Factory Workers on Bales- Nagpur, India 2006

COTTON

India

Cotton, often referred as "White gold" has been in cultivation in India for more than five thousand years. The first people to grow cotton for clothing and towels and sheets were the Harappan people in India.

India ranks first in area and fourth in production in the world’s cotton industry. The cotton required for the purpose of manufacturing yarn is cultivated in about 9 million hectares of land in India and thus India ranks first in the world.

Cotton provides livelihood for over 4 million farming families in India.

The economic reforms and the trade policy liberalization carried out during the last decade with a view of globalizing the Indian economy have exposed the Indian cotton textile industry to a new challenge.

When cotton farming was introduced as an alternative to food crops in the 1980s, farmers invested in expensive varieties of seeds and pesticides. This put small farmers in conditions of severe indebtedness, often driving them to suicide. The spate of suicides that began from Andhra Pradesh, first in 1987 and then again in 1998-99, have so far taken a heavy toll, spreading to Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab.

When Bt Cotton was introduced Farmers found themselves on a “pesticide treadmill' where higher pesticide use led to greater resistance which in turn led to even higher pesticide use, an so on. Today we find 55% of all pesticide use in India is used on the cotton crop. The intial claims that Bt cotton plant would be resistant to the bollworm, leading to decreased pesticide use have been proved false. In 2006, over 1300 farmers committed suicide in the Vidharba area of India alone.

Companies like Monsanto, that specialize in fertilizers, pesticides, agrochemicals depend on cotton and the farmers’ vulnerability for their business.

Bt Cotton is produced by inserting a synthetic version of a gene from the naturally occurring soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis, into cotton. The primary reason this is done is to induce the plant to produce its own Bt toxin to destroy the bollworm, a major cotton pest. The gene causes the production of Bt toxin in all parts of the cotton plant throughout its entire life span. When the bollworm ingests any part of the plant, the Bt cotton toxin pierces its small intestine and kills the insect.
Production of cloth from cotton has also produced much suffering for Indians. Mass-production has killed the movement of “khadi” (handspun, hand-woven cloth,). Mahatma Gandhi began promoting the spinning of khadi for rural self-employment in 1920s India. He also wanted to spread the message of not using foreign clothes. The freedom struggle revolved around the use of khadi fabrics and the dumping of foreign-made clothes. Thus it symbolized the political ideas and independence itself, and to this day most politicians in India are seen only in khadi clothing. Today there are a handful of cooperatives left that practice khadi. (This can be said to be the origins of organic and sustainable clothing).

Porto sokhna

Porto sokhna

AIN SOKHNA: In the labyrinthine world of politics, ever more complicated by the global phenomenon of the “businessman-politician” it’s not always easy to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Nothing is simpler than lumping the usual suspects together – politicians with powerful party affiliations, who double as businessmen, running huge conglomerates, and developing mega-projects that target the creme de la creme of society and, of course, making a sizable fortune in the process.

So when the chairman of a weighty establishment like Amer Group, National Democratic Party member and former MP Mansour Amer, organizes a field visit for the press to tour his project in Ain Sokhna, it’s difficult not to be suspicious of his “real” intentions.

After all, we are journalists and it’s our job to be suspicious of those with power and influence.

But first, a disclaimer: I don’t usually accept such invitations because it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that most of these “site trips” are only after some good free publicity.

So why did I go? I was simply curious to meet the man whose new concept in Porto Marina in the North Coast was the talk of the town all summer. But if I thought there was nothing worth writing about, I said to myself, I won’t write a single word.

When we arrived at Porto Sokhna, we were greeted warmly by an extremely down-to-earth Amer, who ushered us into French cafe/patisserie Alain Le Notre, one of Amer Group’s restaurants which include other international chains like Chili’s and Johnny Carino’s.

I was surprised to find that even though the first phase of the project was not complete, a huge part of it was fully functional, with sizable luxury hotel rooms, restaurants and a marina boasting some very sleek yachts.

After getting the dime tour of the completed part of the facility, we were driven up a craggy mountain road about 190 meters above sea level, where a tent was pitched to house the press roundtable discussion.

There was nothing there but the tent and the power of Amer’s contagious imagination, which had us envision his plans for this rough plateau of seemingly impenetrable mountain overlooking the glorious Red Sea: A residential and vacation resort covering 2.5 million square meters of cliff face with the highest point measuring some 270 square meters above sea level.

This would be a good 20-or so minute drive uphill, except that when Amer is through with it, residents and vacationers won’t have to drive anywhere, all they’ll need to do is hop on to Egypt’s first and only cable car.

“And when you reach the highest peak, you’ll find yourself at a picturesque replica of an ancient Italian village packed with designer boutiques, restaurants and coffee shops,” he explained.

All I was thinking was why on earth would anybody come to Ain Sokhna to buy an Armani suit, or a pair of Christian Dior boots?

Only during the ensuing discussion did I comprehend the scale of Amer Group’s Porto Sokhna project, dubbed their most ambitious enterprise yet.

At a cost of LE 3 billion, Amer said, “we are creating a destination and changing the map of tourism in the area.”

The source of funding, he explained, was a combination of personal, pre-sale and bank loans, which will not exceed 10 percent of the total cost.

Banking on Ain Sokhna’s year-round warm climate, Amer sees no reason why this destination would not be as popular as the Swiss Alps and the Lebanese mountains.

And there’s no dearth of superlatives when it comes to listing the facilities on offer: a 2 million-square meter world class, 18-hole mountain golf course, a yacht marina, the largest spa compound in the region housing five spa resorts of various themes over a 5000-square meter area, three shopping malls with a total number of 260 shops, restaurants and cinemas, the largest swimming pool in the country at 30,000 square meters, and a 250-person capacity gymnasium.

With a luxurious hotel, hotel apartments, villas and ranches, Amer Groups hopes to promote the vacation home concept where the Group would lease the apartments year round on behalf of the owners in return for 30 percent of the rent value.

“By offering complete housekeeping facilities, the owners, who don’t spend more than one month of the year there, will get a return on their investment and we will be keeping the destination alive all year. With 400 hotel rooms and 1,690 vacation homes, we will target 2,686,400 tourist nights per year,” said Amer.

“We want to change the notion of Ain Sokhna as a weekend destination, and rebrand it as ‘Cairo’s Beach’.”

Powering this massive project, he said, is the strategic decision to allow charter flights to land at Cairo Airport, which means that vacationers are merely a couple of hours’ drive away from Ain Sokhna.

Marketing it mainly as a family destination, Amer reaffirms his commitment to the Group’s no-alcohol and none-smoking policy — none of his facilities sell alcohol or shisha, but guests and residents are

Study on Compound Eyes

Study on Compound Eyes

A compound eye is a visual organ found in arthropods such as insects and crustaceans. It consists of one to thousands[1] of ommatidia which are tiny independent photoreception units that consist of a cornea, lens, and photoreceptor cells which distinguish brightness and color. The image perceived by the arthropod is a combination of inputs from the numerous ommatidia, which are oriented to point in slightly different directions. Compared with single-aperture eyes, compound eyes have poor image resolution; however, they possess a very large view angle and the ability to detect fast movement and, in some cases, the polarization of light.

odc: fresh start / new beginning

currently working on redesigning my website. the previous flash site was working well but had major trouble with search engines which required nasty work-around which those engine really don't like. the new site will also be much easier to maintain because it's wordpress powered and is designed for ease of use. it's a highly flexible system though and i'm having great fun puzzling it all together.

the way this shot turned out initially i wasnt' happy with but it was really about the only idea i had for today. so while a bed shot won't ever get good it's now atleast over-the-top on it's own lol. sorry about that... :) it's sort of similar to the car interior from a few days back although this isn't HDR. it's a single shot, desaturated and dirtied up with some preset in topaz. although it's presets i find kinda overdone in general, i did like what it did here for a once in a while thing

went to the hospital today for my ear. got an hearing test which proved my right ear isn't up to spec. the nasal exam was quite different then i imagined and nothing to fear about at all (if it wasn't clear to you all, i'm a sucker when it comes to hospitals, i truly don't know how my wife puts up with that "smell" in them every day!).

now i'm getting a CT scan later this week on which they can inspect my hearing bones and mainly the cochlea which is the shell shaped bones near your ear that is part of your hearing system. the results will only be handled again in 3 weeks though! since the doc has (another) vacation (and i don't like switching doctors all the time) so beginning of march hopefully they and I know more.

Since the recent exit of a certain person from my working environment, things are so much less stressed...

We have a new lady who has taken over and on her first day, the recruitment agency sent her a pretty floral arrangement which now sits on her desk, symbolising - for me - a fresh start and a brighter future.

I almost look forward to going to work now.

advertising is war waged on contentment

advertising is war waged on contentment

fundamentally, corporate and commercial entities conduct, through advertising and the media in general, a war on contentment.

-------

what happened to contentment?

why is it that so many of us are obsessed with constantly renewing the products we already have?

the new television, the new car, the new bathroom, the new kitchen, the new clothes?

contentment has been attacked.

contentment is constantly under attack.

every commercial entity, every business, every provider of services, every shop or point-of-sale
needs you to renew the products that you already have.

even if they are still entirely fit for purpose.

if you do not renew the products that you have, how can any commercial entity generate more profit?

to achieve the correct psychological environment that will oblige you [or coerce you] to renew products that you have, the commercial and corporate worlds have developed a potent tool to rob you entirely of any contentment.

this tool is called advertising.

fundamentally, advertising is nothing more than a war on contentment.

it exists to make the consumer generally and genuinely uneasy.

uneasy about their status, uneasy about the quality of their life, uneasy about their state of happiness, uneasy about their standing amongst peers.

advertising is tremendously successful in conducting the continuing war against contentment.

it is a worldwide force engineered to bring forth envy, jealousy and discontent.

this idea of the new somehow making you a fuller, more successful human being is a fable.

it is a lie.

and the lie is repeated day after day, minute after minute, year after year, time after time.

the idea of contentment is anathema to the commercial and corporate world.

as I do not watch television [DVD/DIV X documentaries being an exception, along with the occasional feature film] I feel free of that choking, smothering, pervasive ever present pressure of advertising.

having once dipped a toe into the world of advertising, I now come to think of it as a global disease.

at face value, it seems reasonably harmless, though once you start to consider the basic function of advertising, it suddenly becomes much more corrosive, much more insidious, and much more amoral.

do you need to buy that?

Robert Schuman

Robert Schuman

A modernizacao da producao e a mehoria da sua qualidade;
o fornecimento, em condicoes identicas, de carvao e de aco aos mercados alemao, frances e dos paises aderentes;
O desenvolvimento da exportacao comum para outros paises;

Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton, painted as teenager

Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton, painted as teenager

Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton (October 6, 1573 – November 10, 1624), one of William Shakespeare's patrons, was the second son of Henry Wriothesley, 2nd Earl of Southampton, and his wife Mary Browne, Countess of Southampton, daughter of the 1st Viscount Montagu.

He was born on October 6,1573, in Cowdray, Sussex, England.

When his father died, he moved to Midhurst, England, and succeeded to the title in 1581, when he became a royal ward, under the immediate care of Lord Burghley. He entered St John's College, Cambridge, in 1585, graduating M.A. in 1589:[1] and his name was entered at Gray's Inn before he left the university. At the age of seventeen he was presented at court, where he was soon counted among the friends of the earl of Essex, and was distinguished by extraordinary marks of the queen's favor. He became a munificent patron of poets: Nashe dedicated his romance of Jack Willon to him, and Gervase Markham his poem on Sir Richard Grenville's last fight. His name is also associated with Barnabe Barnes's Parthenophil and Parthenope, and with the Worlde of Wordes of John Florio, who was for some years in his personal service as teacher of Italian.

It is as a patron of the drama and especially of Shakespeare that he is best known. "My Lord Southampton and Lord Rutland," writes Rowland White to Sir Robert Sydney in 1599, "come not to the court ... They pass away the time in London merely in going to plays every day" (Sydney Papers,[2] ed. Collins, ii. 132). Venus and Adonis (1593) was dedicated to Southampton in terms expressing respect, but no special intimacy; but in the dedication of The Rape of Lucrece[3] (1594) the tone is very different. "The love I dedicate to your lordship is without end ... What I have done is yours; what I have to do is yours; being part in all I have, devoted yours." Nicholas Rowe, on the authority of Sir William Davenant, stated in his Life of Shakespeare that Southampton on one occasion gave Shakespeare a present of ?1000 to complete a purchase. There is no documentary evidence of this, however.

Nathan Drake in his Shakespeare and his Times (1819; vol. ii. pp. 62 seq.) first suggested that Lord Southampton was the person to whom the sonnets of Shakespeare were addressed. He set aside Thomas Thorpe's dedication to the "onlie begetter of these ensuing sonnets, Mr W.H.," by adopting the very unusual significance given by George Chalmers to the word begetter, which he takes as equivalent to procurer. Mr W. H. was thus to be considered only as the bookseller who obtained the manuscript. Other adherents of the Southampton theory suggest that the initials H. W. (Henry Wriothesley) were simply reversed for the sake of concealment by the publisher. It is possible in any case that too much stress has been laid on Thomas Thorpe's mystification.

The chief arguments in favor of the Southampton theory are the agreement of the sonnets with the tone of the dedication of Lucrece, the friendly relations known to have existed between Southampton and the poet, and the correspondence, at best slight, between the energetic character of the earl and that of the young man of the sonnets. Mr Arthur Acheson (Shakespeare and the Rival Poet, 1903) brings much evidence in favor of the theory, first propounded by William Minto, that George Chapman, whose style is parodied by Shakespeare in the 21st sonnet and in Love's Labour's Lost, was the rival poet of the 78th and following sonnets. Mr Acheson goes on to suppose that Chapman's erotic poems were written with a view to gaining Southampton's patronage, and that that nobleman had refused the dedication as the result of Shakespeare's expostulations. The obscurity surrounding the subject is hardly lightened by the dialogue between H. W. and W. S. in Willobie his Avisa, a poem printed in 1594 as the work of Henry Willobie. If the sonnets were indeed addressed to Southampton, the earlier ones urging marriage upon him must have been written before the beginning (1595) of his intrigue with Elizabeth Vernon, cousin of the Earl of Essex, which ended in 1598 with a hasty marriage that brought down Queen Elizabeth's anger on both the contracting parties, who spent some time in the Fleet prison in consequence. The Southampton theory of the sonnets cannot be regarded as proved, and must in any case be considered in relation to other interpretations. However, most recently the most compelling case has been made by Hank Whittemore in his magnum opus, "The Monument" (2005) that Southampton is the principal subject of the sonnets and that they are best understood when it is recognized that Elizabeth was his mother and the 17th Earl of Oxford his father (Edward de Vere).

In 1596 and 1597 Southampton was employed in Essex's expeditions to Cadiz and to the Azores, in the latter of which he distinguished himself by his daring tactics. In 1598 he had a brawl at court with Ambrose Willoughby, and later in the

Stake in Conformity and Control Theory

Stake in Conformity and Control Theory

"For control theory the causes of comformity are the social bonds between an inidividual and the group. When these bonds are strong, the individual conforms; when these bonds are weak, the individual deviates. This photo represents the "stake in conformity". "This phrase refers to what a person risks losing by being detected in deviant behavior," (Stark, pg. 194). Many students at this university are involved in the military. Whether they are older students or just started school and, say, the National Guard, these students have much to lose and too many people counting on them (bonds of attachment) for them to risk serious norm deviation.

Summary:

What I set out to accomplish with my Flickr presentation was a comparison of traditional and non traditional students. I found this interesting because I am a nontraditional student who commutes daily and works two jobs. What I have found since starting this quarter is that a large majority of students and I do not share the same responsibilities, social networks, or status. Because of these differences, we do share many opposing behaviors, attitudes, and characteristics that can be related to a plethora of sociological concepts.
I diagramed what I thought mine and a typical college student’s social network might look like. The point behind this was to show that I have many weak ties outside of Athens because I have worked many places and traveled during the last six years. Most freshmen are straight out of high school so they have the strong ties to there friends, but lack weak ties. Their social networks are not as spread out, as say, mine are. I also depicted the commute to class and work. Mine involves driving, parking, and walking while most students simply walk to class or work.
I then compared the status inequality that is present throughout the university. Some students come from a high position in the stratification system, making their chances and opportunities much better and plentiful. Many students do not pay their tuition or even have to work. This makes much more time to devote to class work or whatever other activities a particular student engages in. I on the other hand am from a lower position in the stratification system. I must work two jobs to pay for my bills, gas, dog food, ect.
The control theory and the differential association theory are large parts of my presentation. They help to explain other concepts that I discussed, such as social bonds and deviance. “By themselves deviant acts tend to be attractive, providing rewards to those who engage in them…. Conformity occurs only when people have more to gain by it than they have to gain by deviance,” (Stark, pg. 194). I compared the different networks, and social bonds to show how some students would be more likely to engage in deviant acts because they either had low investments/involvements, or they associated with people who also engage in those acts. I have too many friends, family, responsibilities, and involvements that I would risk losing by being detected committing deviant acts. That doesn’t mean I don’t drink or go out with friends that party, it just means that I am not going to commit serious offenses. For example: robbing a business because I have little money and must pay for my tuition and bills alone. I have too much on my plate to be able to take such giant risks.
“Most deviant behavior is neither socially uniform nor psychologically aberrant, and the form it takes is determined by the individual’s structural location,” (Nanette J. Davis, 1975, Wm. C. Brown Company Publishers, Dubuque, Iowa). I thought this was an interesting statement because deviant behavior varies from group to group and cannot be associated with a particular culture or group. Rather it is more determined by the individual and social structure that causes this behavior.

Marengo Warehouse

Marengo Warehouse

History of the Development of Marengo Warehouse

In a book titled "History of Crawford County", H.H. Pleasant (who was my Grandmothers Uncle) , devoted the following three paragraphs to the beginning of the Stone Quarry at Marengo, Indiana. They are quoted as follows:

On June 10, 1886, men became interested in the rock at Marengo. The railroad was a means of getting the stone away. Joseph Garrow was the first man to undertake to open the quarry. He has a good chance to sell Wash DePauw of the New Albany Glass Works. The first load or two he let his men mix clinker with the rock. When DePauw saw this he would not buy any more crushed rock Garrow.

Garrow sawed out the rock, which he sold wherever he could get market. One day in November 1886 he was injured and died. Then his two sons, Joseph and Milton Garrow, took up the work. They did so much work that their business was soon running fairly well.

Other men took shares in the rock quarry and business went rapidly on with various degrees of success. Today one can get some idea of the great amount of rock shipped away by the hole in the hill.

The identity of the group of investors taking over the mining operation from The Garrow brothers, and The Company Name under which they first operated in 1887, cannot be immediately determined. The reason being is that Crawford County records of land title transfers does not date back past 1891, a few years after the untimely mine blast killed Milton Garrow, in late 1886 or early 1887.

The history of the fate Joseph Garrow Jr., Milton's brother. The surviving son of Joseph Garrow Sr., could not be verified at the time of this writing. However, court records reveal; that on April 15, 1915, by court decree, Title to the land of the Joseph Garrow heirs, passed to the only surviving Garrow, in Crawford County. A woman by the name of Isabel Garrow, believed to be the mother of Joseph Garrow Sr.,

It appears that the event of the death of Joseph Garrow Jr. (at some prior date), caused Isabel, to inherit all the property of the Joseph Garrow heirs in 1915.

About a year later in 1916, the court ordered Isabel, to surrender the title to all Garrow property to two (2) men, named Arthur B. Harris and David M. Seyton. These men appear to be two of the original investors that financed continued mining operations at the Garrow Rock Quarry, after the death of Milton Garrow.

Earliest records indicate that the Garrow's were operating the rock quarry on lot 199, in the town of Marengo, under the name of the Marengo stone company. Lot 199 is located across the tracks from all other town lots. Lying along the Southeast side of the railroad, Northeast of the junction of Depot road and the Norfolk Southern line. Earliest court records in 1891 reveal that the Garrow family owned lots 52, 53, 54, 55, 199 and 200 in the town of Marengo, once adjacent to Quarry property now separated by the railroad.

The authenticity of the report that early limestone mining occurred on this parcel of land is evidenced, by a long ago abandoned mine high wall and other deep rock mining scars left in the ancient face of a 350-foot long limestone out-crop still visible lying across lot 199.

Upon further examination, court records reveal that land deals made, (before and after the Garrow property passed to the shareholders from Isabel Garrow, in 1916), added bordering lands to lot 199 to the south and east. Eventually unifying adjacent land parcels into a 205-arce tract, which makes up the present day Marengo Warehouse property.

The first documentation, of a company name, under which The Rock Quarry probably operated from the beginning, is recorded, "Marengo Lime Stone Company". They bought 3 one half acres from "Marengo Manufacturing Company" on February 11, 1909.

On the 24th day of November 1917 the Marengo bank recorded a sheriffs deed to the Marengo Stone Quarry Property, on May 5, 1919. The property went back to Marengo Limestone Company.

On November 9,1922 Marengo Stone Company added land from the Jenner heirs.

On the 14th of December 1922, land was added to the quarry property from Lavonia Balthi's heirs. On the same day, Marengo Limestone Company, transferred its property to Marengo Crushed Stone Company.

On the same day in 1929, Marengo Crushed Stone Company transferred the property to Westside Bank of Evansville.

On December 2nd, 1936 the Quarry property transferred from Westside Bank, to Albert Wedeking.

From its beginning on 1886, The Rock Quarry at Marengo, operated as an open pit mine until 1936.

In 1936 Rudy Messinger, bought the Rock Quarry at Marengo, and changed its name to High-Rock Mining Company, and began to mine underground using the room and pillar mining method.

High-Rock Mining operated the Quarry until it sold to the Bowen Family in 1947.

But eye witness, say no significant mining in-roads in the interior were made, they simply refer to as a "Hole" left under the h
