Painted Re-ment Kitchen!

I had purchased a brown re-ment fridge, but couldn't stand the color. I spray painted it yellow, but then it classed with my red kitchen unit. So I spray painted that white. I might paint the tile backsplash in the future and I need to repaint the cabinet hardware silver.

Harvey Nicks raffia monkey

I used to lecture on retail design at Central Saint Martins, London, and Harvey Nicks have achieved what few retail operations attempt - they have considered the visual whole of the main facade. The display windows on each floor are part of a comprehensive and temporary design treatment. And it looks absolutely stunning. I was told they have an Artist in Residence who created these windows. Best retail windows I've seen in years. And a close look at the materials he/she used in the ground floor display reveals inexpensive easily found (and recycled) cardboard and wood off-cuts.

• A cost effective temporary display solution
• Environmentally friendly and easily recycled
• Compact and easy to implement

Habitat

Habitat

Cherio!! sympathetic? possibly a little

On the 24th June 2011 Habitat announced that it was going into administration. Home Retail Group, owner of Argos and Homebase has announced it will be buying the Habitat brand and three Central London stores. The other stores would continue trading until the end of 2011, or until stock is depleted, but there is nothing set about their future. HRG will retain 100 staff at the London stores and 50 in "brand support", which includes Habitat's furniture designers. It is unclear what will happen to Habitat's other 750 employees, including those at the branches in administration.

Terence Conran founded the company in London in 1964, opening his own store to market his Summa range of furniture. The first Habitat store was opened in Fulham Road in Chelsea[3] by Conran, his then wife Caroline, Philip Pollock and the model Pagan Taylor.[4] This store became the Habitat template, with its quarry tiled floor, whitewashed brick walls, white-painted wooden-slatted ceilings and spotlights creating a feeling of space and focusing attention on the product.Conran has said the main reason for the shop's initial success was that Habitat was one of the few places that sold cheap Pasta storage jars just as the market for dried pasta took off in the UK.

This shot was pretty difficult to set up since my bathroom isn't that big. And kind of risky as well since my tripod isn't that high. I placed myself in the shower with the camera hanging of the edge of the shower wall. An sb800 on the floor and a desk lamp also hanging of the shower wall edge on subjects right.

Feel free to comment.

7:30PM on friday - 3 days to go.

there are a couple spots that aren't 100% lined up. i think they're close but working with an old house makes for a lot of imperfections. the floor is sloped a bit and at least 2 of the walls aren't perfectly straight.

i still need to grout. i won't be done this weekend though...i forgot to account for drying time between setting the tile and grouting them.

i'm going to switch to a little kitchen work while i wait for the mortar to dry.

The Steamer Sprague in Port:"The Big Mama of the Mississippi"

The Steamer Sprague in Port:

The Steamer Sprague in Port:
"The Big Mama of the Mississippi"

The largest and most powerful stern wheel towboat ever launched (318 feet long, 61 feet wide), the steamer Sprague, was constructed in 1901 by the Dubuque Boat and Boiler Works in Iowa for the Monongehela River Consolidated Coal and Coke Company.

The Sprague broke the record for towing when, in 1907, it pushed the largest tow of barges handled by a steam-powered vessel- 60 units, 1,125 feet long, 312 feet wide, and 67,307 tons. Unfortunately it also broke the record for the most tows lost- 53,200 tons of coal above Osceola, Arkansas.

In April 1927, the steamer transported human cargo during the massive Mississippi River flood, rescuing an estimated 20,000 people bringing them to Vicksburg.

In 1948, the steamboat was decommissioned at Memphis having traveled a distance equal to forty times around the equator and was to be scraped. A reprieve came from the citizens of Vicksburg who purchased the Sprague for use as a floating theater for the melodrama Gold in the Hills and as the home of a river-related museum and the Vicksburg Yacht Club.

Affectionately called "Big Mama," the Sprague burned in 1974 and eventually sank in 1979

New Travertine Floor

New Travertine Floor

Once again Emma and I had a weekend of tiling on our schedule! We started Saturday morning with tiling the back splash for the granite counter that we finished last weekend. That went pretty quickly which was nice.

Then came the travertine tile for the floor. We bought 18X18 tiles and planned on cutting them in half to install them in a nicer pattern. Since our floor was pretty small it would have looked odd having such large tiles.

Our wet tile saw was on the small size so I had to build a jig to support and cut the tiles in half. It worked ok but wasn't perfect which meant that the tiles were pretty close to being the same size but still a tiny bit off which made it all the more fun for Emma to install.

Before we installed the tile we had to seal it so the mortar would not stain it during install. It took a while to dry so we had to wait to start the install for the day. Emma managed to get about 4 rows of the 9 installed on Saturday night before we decided to call it a day.

Sunday morning we got up first thing and started with the work again. It went somewhat smoothly but of course had its issues. All in all it went well and we actually managed to get done early in the day and take a long lunch break to eat and relax a bit. We needed it!!

Bank of British Columbia - 1889

Bank of British Columbia - 1889

422 Richards Street, Vancouver, BC.

Description of Historic Place:

The Bank of British Columbia is an ornate, three-storey Victorian Italianate masonry commercial building. The building has a narrow frontage on West Hastings Street, a one-storey addition to the east and a chamfered corner. Located on a north sloping lot at the southeast corner of Richards and West Hastings Streets, it is a significant landmark within the context of other commercial buildings of a compatible age and scale in downtown Vancouver.

Heritage Value:

Built in 1889-1891, the Bank of British Columbia Building is valued as an ornate and sophisticated example of the Victorian Italianate style, which was used to convey an image of prosperity and permanence for commercial buildings during the late Victorian era. This is a particularly elegant example of the style, exhibiting a varied articulation of window cases, sill and plat courses, and rusticated ground floor pilasters. The bank was considered to be burglar-proof due to its elaborate vaults, and featured fine interior appointments, such as a Minton tile floor and glass dividing walls between the banking hall offices.

The Bank of British Columbia is a significant surviving commission by architect Thomas Charles Sorby (1836-1924), and is notable for its builder, George C. Mesher (1860-1938). Sorby was an English-trained architect who found work in Canada with the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), for whom he designed a number of innovative stations. Mesher worked with Sorby in Victoria, and developed a reputation as one of the premier contractors in Victoria. His involvement in this significant project speaks to the generally more sophisticated conditions in the capital city at the time.

Furthermore, the building is evidence of the earliest economic development in the province. It was commissioned for the Bank of British Columbia, founded in 1862, just four years after the Crown Colony of British Columbia had come into existence. The discovery of gold in the colony had attracted the attention of a group of British investors, who established the bank in London. The bank became a major lender to the financially struggling colonial government. However, by the end of the century it was unable to meet increased competition, and in 1901 it merged with the Canadian Bank of Commerce. This building subsequently housed a number of branch banks, including the Bank of Toronto that was located in the one-storey addition to the east.

The building's prominent location contributed to the establishment of the Victory Square area as a district of important commercial activity, and as the city's primary financial and corporate district. The Bank of British Columbia was one of the first commercial buildings to be built outside of Gastown, the initial commercial area of Vancouver. The building housed the most modern banking facility of its day, and offices on its second storey for rental to professionals such as barristers.

Character-Defining Elements:

Key elements that define the heritage character of the Bank of British Columbia include its:
- prominent location at the southeast corner of Richards and West Hastings Streets, on a north-sloping lot; built to the property lines
- contribution to the streetscape as part of an unbroken streetwall with continuous retail storefronts
- commercial form, scale and massing, as expressed by its three-storey height and regular, rectangular plan
- flat roof with raised parapets
- masonry construction with: smooth finished sandstone ashlar masonry cladding on the first storey facades; high-quality brick facing on the upper storeys on the two main facades; common bricks, in American common bond, on the rear and side facades; intricate carved sandstone detailing; rusticated ground floor pilasters; and granite entry steps and foundation blocks

Royal Bank of Canada - 1903

Royal Bank of Canada - 1903

400 West Hastings Street, Vancouver, BC.

Description of Historic Place:

The Royal Bank of Canada, West Hastings Branch, is a two-storey plus lower level Classically-influenced masonry structure, clad with carved sandstone on its two main facades and articulated with arched windows and pilasters. It is located at the southwest corner of West Hastings and Homer Streets, within the context of other commercial buildings of similar age and scale.

Heritage Value:

The Royal Bank of Canada, West Hastings Branch, is significant as an important component of the early retail and commercial fabric that made West Hastings Streets one of the most prominent commercial streets in early Vancouver. The southward shift of commercial activities that started during the Klondike era provided the stimulation for major commercial development along West Hastings Street. This location was within close proximity to regional transportation facilities and the booming commerce of Gastown. Several major banks, notably conservative in comparison to other businesses, located their headquarters along Hastings Street after the commercial strip was well established. Opened in 1903, the prosperity and rapid growth of Vancouver and the subsequent success of the Royal Bank is evident by the 1909 renovation that nearly doubled the size of this structure.

Further, this building is of heritage value as the Vancouver headquarters of the Royal Bank of Canada from 1903 until 1931. It incorporated the most modern security features, including a massive reinforced concrete vault with walls 0.6m thick and a steel door with geared combination locking mechanisms, as well as several other secondary vaults. Engineering and structural innovations included reinforced concrete foundations, basement columns, ground floor beams and floor deck, qualifying the building as thoroughly modern and one of the first large-scale uses of poured concrete in the city. After the Royal Bank's new headquarters were completed at the corner of Hastings and Granville Streets, this served as a local branch until 1981, demonstrating the continued growth of the city and the westward shift of the business district.

This building is of heritage value as the first classically inspired bank in Vancouver. It marked the point when local financial institutions started to abandon Victorian eclecticism and embrace the Classical Revival style as symbolic of their conservatism, stability and security. The tripartite articulation, with a solid base, giant pilasters, continuous cornice and somber detailing enhance the sense of monumentality and repose. The Royal Bank was a significant and innovative design by local architects Dalton and Eveleigh, who were instrumental in the development of early Vancouver. W.T. Dalton (1854-1931) and S.M. Eveleigh (1870-1947) were highly regarded for the quality of design of commercial and institutional buildings. The original interior decoration was carried out in an Art Nouveau style by James Bloomfield (1860-1951), one of British Columbia's most notable early artists and designers. Significantly, the building was developed and constructed by Vancouver pioneer, Jonathan Rogers, who built several early branches for the Royal Bank, and a number of other buildings in the area, including the adjacent structure to the west.

Key elements that define the heritage character of the Royal Bank of Canada include its:
- siting in an area of historic commercial buildings on Hastings Street
- contribution to the streetscape as part of an unbroken streetwall with continuous retail storefronts
- siting on the property lines, with no setbacks
- monumental and imposing commercial form, scale and massing, as expressed by its two-storey (plus basement) height, flat roof, continuous horizontal parapet, rectangular plan and single entry
- masonry construction, as expressed by: the rough-dressed granite foundation, granite front steps, rough-dressed sandstone facade with smooth-dressed pilasters, common red brick rear and side walls, and concrete internal structure
- Classical Revival influence as evident in the tripartite facade articulation, continuous projecting cornice, engaged pilasters, bands of running Greek key ornament, and entablature with egg-and-dart moulding
- fenestration: large ground floor rectangular window openings, original wooden-sash, semicircular upper-level window openings with decorated mullions, some original upper level double-hung one-over-one wooden-sash windows; and segmental arched window openings on the rear elevation

Oakwood Tower (2)

Oakwood Tower (2)

Oakwood, while it is larger than Kirkhope and has the same style of rectangular turrets of opposite corners, does not have a parapet wall. As can be seen from the window arrangements, the tower contains three principal floors below an attic. A number of shot-holes have been provided for the defence of the building.

The doorway is arched and has pronounced moulding around it. The iron-studded door opens into a mural lobby, from which there is access to the vaulted basement and to the wide turnpike stair. This stair has an exceptionally thick central newel, reaching as much as tree feet in diameter, which contributes to the inward projection of the stairwell into each floor. The resulting L-shaped space was divided into a small room and a larger room on each floor.

The Hall, as usual, is on the first-floor and contains a wide and elaborate fireplace (over 7 feet wide and 5 feet high), three aumbries and a garderobe, as well as four windows to give it all light.

Sofa corner in summerish mood

Sofa corner in summerish mood

I had promised to post pictures of the little changes around the apartment, and eventhough I wanted to do so during the weekend, I found myself mostly in a mood to spend as much time as possible with my partner and friends, and while there were new pictures posted, they were still in the same fairytale mood of Friday's night last upload.

Already Tuesday and it seems to be the right time to talk about works and jobs, so here is a glimpse to what has been happening. A couple of more pictures are following, offering a clearer sight.

-> Sofa combination in "L" shape, floor lamp, mini shelf adjusted in the corner,
Black& white patterned pillow cover, coffeetable surface, bamboo bowl and wooven
round stool (Alseda) from Ikea.
-> White pillow with " loads of love" message in golden from h&m Home. Rather
a little kitchy, but hope that the overall outcome is still elegant and eclectic.
Have chosen golden instead of yellow, to bring the sunshiny feeling of summer and sun
inside.
-> My ever favorite summer hat from this summer's h&m Garden collection.
-> The round wooven bag is usually at the kitchen and holds our potatoes :)
-> A collection of vintage books from England, Germany & Spain.
-> The wallpaper hung on the wall like a huge papyrous dates back to 1965, is signed and was
produced by Albert Van Luit company.
-> The white, milky glass candleholder and the honey coloured vase are both vintage.
-> The giant wish bone, is a gift from my father.
-> Big and smaller paper boats made from vintage music sheets, to add a vacation feel while still
in town :)

Alright!
I wanted to do this since soooo long, but either I'm out of spare time or it's pitch black outside and light is rare. I don't have lighting equipment, so I'm bound to drag lamps around my flat, hang white shirts everywhere and just try to be creative to get some kind of vibing light going. Without any natural light at all, this will turn difficult surprisingly quickly, as shutter times for these need to be fast. What I hate even more about nightly taken pictures is the need to be quiet as my neighbours will be asleep and walls are thin and patience is short. In the end I managed to get it done but it was a long way again. I should really try other things in the future or my 365's will turn to something like 48's, cos they are a BITCH to do!

Etched Glass Detail of "Villa Alba" - Studley Park, Kew

Etched Glass Detail of

“Villa Alba” is situated at the corner of Walmer Street and Nolan Avenue in Studley Park, in the exclusive inner Melbourne suburb of Kew.

In 1862, the daughter of wealthy squatter James McEvoy, Anna Maria McEvoy, married the general manager of Colonial Bank Australasia, William Greenlaw. As a wedding gift, James placed a trust for Anna Maria of “Studley Villa” a single storey Italianate villa amid grounds of about one third of a hectare on the corner of Walmer Street and Nolan Avenue. James himself lived at the larger Italianate mansion of “Studley House” which he had acquired in 1860. “Studley House” adjoinined the “Studley Villa” property.

In 1881, the Greenlaw family demolished the existing house whose name had changed from “Studley Villa” to” Villa Alba” in 1870.
Built in 1882 on the same site as the old villa, “Villa Alba” is two storeys with a single storey section at the rear. It has rendered masonry walls with ruled ashlar markings and a hipped slate roof with bracketed eaves and tall chimney stacks. There is a central front tower of three storeys with a balustraded top and flagpole. All the windows have arched tops and moulded surrounds and there is massive rendered quoining at the corners of the building and the projecting tower. The entrance is up steps to a central front porch located at the base of the tower and the main rooms are behind the faceted bay windows at either side. The single storey wing houses the service areas and is nestled into the hillside behind a retaining wall.

It is the interior of “Villa Alba” which is of particular significance as when the house was remodelled in 1883 William Greenlaw employed Melbourne's foremost firm of artistic house painters and decorators, the Paterson Brothers (Charles, James and Hugh), to paint lavish finishes using stencils, gilding and hand painting on both ground and first floors. In “Villa Alba” at least three main artists were employed and something like thirty different frieze patterns were used in the rooms. The painting schemes are both rich in tone with soft colours and delicate in detail with much use of stencilling rather than wallpapers. Much of the technique of painting used is very complex and included not only stencilling but also chalked pounce outlines with hand painting to merge colours. There are also large areas exhibiting freehand painting. There are a great variety of scenes with both stylised garlands, ribbons, festoons, ribbons and cherubs in the French style of art, as well as panoramic scenes of Sydney Harbour and Edinburgh, Scotland and references to Sir Walter Scott's novels. In the hall frieze, putti can be seen engaged in activities such as photography or cricket. The interior decoration includes ornamental pediments over the timber doors, ornate ceiling cornices, ceiling roses and tiled fireplaces with marble mantles. There is some use of parquet flooring. Complementary and luxurious furniture was also commissioned for “Villa Alba's” decoration.

William Greenlaw's penchant for luxury and speculation on the share market to finance his lifestyle finally exceeded his judgement and skill. In 1893 he was declared bankrupt. As “Villa Alba” was not in his name, the family’s occupation of the property was not initially affected by their reduced circumstances. Following her husband’s death in 1895 Anna Maria Greenlaw sold the contents of the house in a two-day sale in 1897 and leased the house. In 1913, Melbourne businessman Samuel Fripp and his family moved in as Anna Maria’s tenants and remained so until her death in 1918. The house remained in the Greenlaw family’s ownership until 1933 when it became the property of Samuel Fripp. When Samuel died in 1936, his sons retained ownership of the house until 1949. “Villa Alba” was finally purchased by the Royal Women's Hospital in 1949 and the Henry Pride Centre of the hospital was built on “Villa Alba's” beautiful gardens along Nolan Avenue.

Most of “Villa Alba’s” original outbuildings and almost the entire original garden have been destroyed through development of hospital buildings crowding the main house. At first the villa was used as a nurses' home but was evacuated when cracks appeared in the walls during the building of a new nurses' home adjacent to it. “Villa Alba” was used for several years as accommodation for the caretaker of the Henry Pride hospital.

In 1984 the Kew Council, with the support of Mount Royal Hospital, the owners of “Villa Alba”, established a preservation committee. The following year, the hospital granted a twenty-five year lease to the Kew Council (later the Boroondara Council) for the historic house and some land. By 1996 the committee had resolved to establish a museum and resource centre of Nineteenth Century interior decoration at “Villa Alba”. In 1999 after passing through the hands of several hospitals, “Villa Alba” was sold by the St Georges and Inner Eastern Healthcare Network to the Society of Jesus for the use of Xa

ID-ed as a Sea Mouse!

ID-ed as a Sea Mouse!

We found two of these creatures on the sand at Antechamber Bay, Kangaroo Island, as shown on the map.

They were stranded at the high tide mark, several metres above the then low tide, within 25 metres of the rocky outcrop at the Northern point of the Bay.

Not knowing whether they were free swimming creatures or burrowers of some kind we left the one which was still alive where it was.

Thinking one was dead, and not having good enough light to photograph it in situ, I took one back to the house.

The following morning, as I moved it into good light I realised there was some slight response to my touch and so placed it on a flat surface and sprinkled some (fresh) water onto it. I hadn't thought to take some sea water.

These first four photos are the result.

We put a thin layer of water onto a plate and watched, astonished as it began to move quite purposefully from the centre of the plate to the outside edge and then over the edge, lifting (what we assumed to be) its "head" end and turning definitely left (away from the sunlight) and and then slightly towards the sunlight, before proceeding down over the edge of the plate onto the timber table.

We returned it to the plate and after some minutes it expelled a dark liquid which shot about 15 - 20 cms from its body and fell past the ledge of the table and in spots onto the floor.

We added a little more water and it expelled two more "bursts" of the dark brown liquid into the water.

After taking a series of pictures at very quick intervals (which make a staccato "movie" of its movements as described) we took it back to the beach.

We had a copy of Dakin's Seashores of Australia (details later) which made us think it a sea cucumber and likely to try to burrow near the rocks, so that's where we returned it
