7days: Day 5 - FESTIVE

We were at the church this morning for ME's speech therapy playgroup, and I finally got up the courage to ask if I could check out the sanctuary. It's one of those lovely, old sanctuaries with the pew boxes, built in 1846, though the congregation dates back to 1638. What I find most interesting about this church is that the sanctuary is not on the ground floor; it's actually one storey above. The ground floor houses the kitchen, some offices, and the nursery. I felt this was FESTIVE as the sanctuary is decorated for the holiday. Pardon yet ANOTHER face shot of me, but I wanted to show off this beautiful sanctuary and couldn't find anything terribly reflective.

I could have spent hours poking around this church. I adore old buildings, and Newport certainly has plenty!

Sanssouci Park

Sanssouci Park is a large park surrounding Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam, Germany. Following the terracing of the vineyard and the completion of the palace, the surroundings were included in the structure. A baroque flower garden with lawns, flower beds, hedges and trees was created. In the hedge quarter 3,000 fruit trees were planted. The greenhouses of the numerous nurseries contained oranges, melons, peaches and bananas. The goddesses Flora and Pomona, who decorate the entrance obelisk at the eastern park exit, were placed there to highlight the connection of a flower, fruit and vegetable garden.

While I was out last night I noticed a lot of Seattlites took advantage of the mild dry days we had over the weekend to put up lights and decorate their yards. Last year I had driven by this house which had a huge sign made from lights that said "Yes We Can." This year they have written a gift idea in lights and hung it in the tree branches at curbside. I'd like to suggest starting with the USA signing the Ottawa Treaty on Landmines. It's a no brainer, and frankly, I think the president has no valid argument for deciding not to do so and that the USA seems to have lost its will to find its moral compass, despite a change in administrations.

Holiday time when you're a teacher -- making cookies, helping the kids decorate the cookies, trying to clean blue food coloring off your new sweater, decorating the room, rehearsing songs, making gifts for the kids, helping the kids make gifts for their parents,
making latkes, making menorahs, making dreidels, making cards, making handprints on gift bags, taking photographs of the kids to give the parents, hoping the photos come back in time to actually give to the parents, making rolled beeswax candles, helping the kids make gifts to send to their grandparents, realizing that you're running out of time to get everything done...

Today everything seemed to come together, and I came home from work exhausted, but a little more relaxed. A few more days of school, and then I'm off for two weeks with my own kids. No lesson plans, no schedules, no deadlines.

Now, if I can just get my own personal holiday stuff done ... cookies to be made, gifts to be wrapped, cards to be sent...

Chaldon church - wall painting...

dated about 1170 -1200. believed to be the work of a travelling artist monk at that time. At some time in the 17th century, the painting was whitewashed over. In 1869 the Revd Henry Shepherd had decorators in to prepare the walls for re-limewashing, noticed signs of colour and stopped the work. The picture begins at the lower right with the tree of life or knowledge, the serpent in the branches....it is worth a visit to see this and the explanation of the whole painting.

Edge deckling

This illustration shows the technique to use on the prepared card to soften the edge for shredding in order to create an appearance of an original style of natural deckle. Add a couple drops of dish detergent to the cup of water for best softening.

Keep rubbing until the edge starts to shred and you are happy with the results. Pliers or vice grips can help even out problems spots on the edge.

Stoneware Pot With Basket

This is a stoneware pot found in the Philippines in the 1900's. The creator and the location of creation is unknown to me. The surface appears ruff, and remained undecorated. The top is broken, and may or may not have been more ornate, though judging from the rest of the pot, I would assume the top to have been only functional, not decorative, perhaps lending itself to a lid of some kind. The pot is wrapped in a weaving of some sort appearing to aid in carrying the pot, which does not seem to have had any handles. The walls of the pot appear thicker than other, decorative pots that I have seem from the same region, this could be because it was produced in a different location, or by a different artist, or because it was intended for a use other than decoration. I find the latter to be the most likely possibility.

All the characteristics of this pot lead me to believe that it was a strictly functional object, perhaps one that was used during the working hours and then stored out of sight at the end of the day. This poses an interesting point on the relationship between the usefulness of objects and how they represent a culture. The work that a certain society performs, as well as the tools that they use to perform this work are obviously large defining parts of a society. However, objects that a people in a society treasures and use to decorate living space and beautify their environment also play a large role in describing that culture. As would seem natural, the differences in objects used for work and those used for decoration can be quite a large one, making it difficult to discern how the true image of a certain culture should be portrayed.

Because of these discrepancies, I believe the distinction between cultural evidence pertaining to work and evidence pertaining to entertainment and aesthetic values is an important distinction to make. For instance, the plastic trash cans that many people in the U.S. have stored under their desk by no means indicate any aesthetic values that we may hold as a culture. They do however, indicate the state in which we prefer to keep our work environment. The existence of several of these plastic trash cans may serve to indicate that we, as a society, have made an effort to organize our waste into certain categories and distribute it accordingly. This of course is our effort to recycle, and demonstrates our value of the environment, however large or small it may be.
