36 years ago I was in boot camp at Great Lakes Illinois. I was there from 29 September to 21 November 1972. This shot was taken while I was involved in what was known as 'Happy Hour', an hour of exercise and drill with an old Springfield rifle. Similarly given as the 'idiot of the day award' it is a reward for some type of infraction. I am the handsome, nerdy looking fellow on the right. My partner on the left is S Waidemer who was our company flag bearer.

I really, really do not like grocery shopping. On a busy Saturday. When screeching kids are out, people are rude and take up entire aisles with their shopping carts and pretend they don't notice you and won't move out of your way, when you have an extremely long shopping list and have to weave your way in and out of snooty slowpokes that think they own the entire store.

Ugh. It's a nightmare. Lesson learned.

My son's day to bring a snack for his kindergarten class. My rule is it needs to be fun, but it needs to have some nutritional value. Anyway, they're studying owls this week as a part of their unit on owls, bats, and spiders...obviously buildingup to halloween. Soooo, in keeping with the theme...I made owl face kits. Each child got a freshly milled organic whole wheat and oat flour sugar cookie (SUPER yummy...not one of those disappointing healthy cookies), two apple slices dipped in water with lemon to keep them from browning, 3 orange slices, and 2 chocolate chips...which the kids pointed out were for the pupils. It was a hit.

All in My Head : The song s theme of self-examination belies the fact that it was written by Mullins and Hansen as a prospective theme song for the sitcom Scrubs. The original 2002 recording was lighter and more uptempo than this powerful new version, in which Mullins delivers an arching falsetto vocal in the chorus. When we FIRST started the recording, I was having a block, and Gerry said, Shawn, I m tellin you, that stuff's all in your head, just like that song we wrote. And I said, Man, we oughta dig that up. The next thing I knew, we were all sitting around working it up in a whole different groove.

Home : The first verse is about my dear friend Melissa Hadley, a musician in Athens and the funniest woman I ever knew, who died at 38 of ovarian cancer. The second verse came to me as I was looking at old pictures of Cabbagetown, a section of Atlanta that was once inhabited by Irish immigrant mill workers. When intruders broke down her door one night, the woman started firing, not realizing her assailants were police officers, who, it turned out, had targeted the wrong house in search of drug dealers. Reading Dylan s Chronicles inspired me to look for news stories, and this one really grabbed me. So little was said about it because that s how things are in rough neighborhoods, which is what I meant by the line, everything stays the same. But it all changed for me, because I connected with her. Sometimes I don t feel safe, especially after we got cleaned out last year. But we don t have a gun in the house. Even though I ve got a little army in me [after college, Mullins was commissioned in the U.S. Army Reserve], I don t wanna live that way.

Homeless Joe : There really is a Homeless Joe here in Atlanta, along with Shorty, Blind Bob, Wolf and other strumming, homeless troubadours. They re living through their art, even though their lives are tough, without enough to eat or a place to sleep, and they re viewed as winos on the street. The song is a celebration of those people who are following their bliss, even in the most difficult of circumstances. I ve always connected with them; I see them as modern-day examples of the wanderer.

Leaving All Your Troubles Behind : This is the story of a girl who lives in a town in the North Georgia Mountains where there were once textile mills, but now the biggest industry is trailer meth, cooked up by the grandkids of moonshiners. There are a lot of people in small towns in the South that try to escape, and most of them wind up coming back. But not this girl; she s seen enough to know that s not where she belongs.

Fraction of a Man : A modern-day traveling salesman finds himself in Biloxi, and suddenly it hits him What am I doing with my life? That s a really common thing for a lot of middle-aged American men, who want to follow their bliss and really go for it, but somehow they never do. This one leaves you with a reality check, with the
alcoholism, the loneliness, and the nomadic existence. It d make a bummer of a movie.

See That Train : I love trains. My grandfather, father and brother-in-law all worked for the railroad, and I miss all the stories I used to hear. The song is about a hobo whose girl has left him asleep under a water tower and taken the train to Birmingham. I feel so unhip, because all the stuff I m interested in is

Never skip over breakfast. If you don't have the time to get something to eat in the morning, set it out early the night before. Leave something on your counter or a little table by your door, like fruit, a breakfast bar, bagel, something for fast and easy grabbing.

Asia, long time shelter resident and long time friend, left this world for a better place on Monday, October 5, 2009. I knew Asia when he was first brought to the shelter. He had attacked his guardian and was considered a menace. An unpredictable cat who could attack without notice. He was initially kept in a room to himself with signs all over the doors/windows saying as much. I was so terrified everytime I had to enter the room. Asia never did anything but purr and rub up against me. I always side with the cats, so naturally, I ignored the signs and went with my instincts....which were correct.

Eventually, after a few months, it was determined that Asia had a tumor in his inner ear...which was probably a cause of much of his behavior. (he did not like other cats and he would lash out) He was also thought to be a bit autistic (not kidding). He was VERY intelligent and very much knew who was in charge. Him.

Years went by and Asia was eventually moved to Special Needs Room#2 due to a developing thyroid problem. He was losing weight fast. I spent every Monday night with him for years. These were years of him sitting by whilst Teddy commandered my lap. You see, Asia was a lap cat too...in fact, after years of being with us, Asia LOVED to be cuddled. He loved being picked up and loved. His purr was so very loud! I'd really feel just awful for him as he sat by me and Teddy and waited for his turn. Teddy wasn't having any of it. heehee.

After Teddy got adopted, I naturally gave Asia first shot at my lap. Asia, being the proud, smart kitty he was, decided that he wasn't anyone's second banana and he refused my lap. Now he would sit very close to me...but never on my lap.

Being a Special Needs shelter volunteer is hard sometimes. We were told that Asia was going downhill and that any moment we spent with him may be his last here on earth. Each Monday of these past few months, I'd breath a sigh of relief to see Asia there waiting for me on the sink. You see, the sink was his domain (after Teddy got adopted) and that is where he preferred to recieve his treats. Asia and treats went together like peanut butter and jelly. GOSH, he loved to eat! Near the end, he was a sack of skin and bones...but he could eat like a truck driver. He'd wobble when he walked but he ran when he saw treats. I'm going to miss that so much.

Last night during my Monday duty, I told all my shelter kitty friends that these treats were in honor of the master! I also told Mr. Kitty Kitty that he was now Alpha and to treat his fellow kitties with respect and care.

I missed Mr. Asia coming out to the deck and sitting so close to me (but not on my lap!) Asia was one of most unusual cats I have ever met...in such a good way. He was almost human in a lot of ways. He was soo very smart and fun. He LOVED to play when he was feeling good. He also liked to put the other kitties in his room in line. They respected him and gave him clear pathways. I LOVED watching Meatball walk around Asia. He would always give Asia a wide berth when walking. heehee. I'll miss that.

I'll miss you handsome boy...you were such a great friend to photograph, so very handsome and noble. (Asia LOVED to be photographed...whenever he saw my camera, he'd be right there beside me...curious)

Something will be missing in my photos now.

Went to Long Johns today, got a stomach ache and then went home...

I know I need to.
Sorry for the horrible facial expression, I just took this and am really sleepy because I woke up at 5 this morning for no apparent reason.

Yes sir, that's a Winsor Pilates DVD with the strange little circle thing that they included.

My mother bought this some time ago off the telly and I tried it once, the one exercise that I tried was one of the ones where you have to sit on your spine. Since I just had two surgeries last January and March it was hard for me to sit on my spine without it hurting like hell. For those of you who don't know I had the surgeries for a cyst that formed on my lower back. Ouch, yeah!

Anyways, I did challenge myself to lose weight and get healthy, and it supposedly started on the 1st but I'm now getting around to actually trying to do it. I just did some exercises that are on the video and I felt 'the burn' several times. Some of the moves, I couldn't hold my balance and I couldn't go as much or as fast as the fitness models could.

I don't know if I'll stick with it but I sure as hell should try. If this fails I'll probably try Yoga or Meditation for my fall back. :D

A most excellent dinner if I've ever had one. I started making quesadillas 2 years ago because the ingredients were cheap and readily available in Pilsen. Betty taught me the correct ways to season, cook and assemble everything and it has resulted in this masterpiece.

This dish is part of a scientific base on Oxenhope moor in calderdale situated on the A6033 between the towns of Pecket Well and Oxenhope.
It is owned by Bradford university and it's purpose was to measure the size of raindrops in the atmosphere and help predict the effects of global warming.
Good news, global warning is over, or at least that's what you would think if you visited here because the base is in a terrible state of disrepair and recently it came to my attention that this place is to be bulldozed. In my opinion they should hand it over to the photography department of the university as it is a gift for any image maker that happens to find themselves here.

For this dish I used an aluminum oven form for baking/grilling, with spread rims to make it wider.
On the back part of the hole in the dish I taped the hard cupboard ring from the used tape pressed in the middle to give it oval shape.
In the front I used transparent virgin cd's box circular cover with Shakira's Pepsi track in the end pointing with the reflective side towards the flash head. I mostly use it covered with white fabric in front.

For this you need

- 300 grams or so of chicken strips, marinated
- 150 grams of dark seedless olives
- cottage cheese
- tomato sauce
- garlic, onion, spice

First slice as much as onion (might add some garlic, too) as you like, and fry it golden in olive oil. Add the chicken strips, and fry until they look ready. Add 300-400 grams of tomato sauce and some water, and let the sauce boil a while for the right taste. Might as well add some basil and pepper, too. In the end, add the sliced olives, let the sauce boil for a few minutes and add the cottage cheese. Allow most of the cottage cheese to melt, and then serve. With cottage cheese and pasta of course =) Very tasty.

My diet and work out schedule will take some time to get used to. I did my first weigh in this morning and am optimistic about the goals I'm setting for myself.

So today while bouncing on my yoga ball I stumbled across the 100th episode of Dr. OZ. I've never watched a single episode before today. But I was intrigued but the theme of the show. He had 100 people who had lost 100 pounds and were giving 100 tips on how to lose weight. It was very interesting and I learned a lot that I plan to use in the coming months.

The ever flamboyant Richard Simmons was on the show too. It's amazing to hear his story. Even though I've heard it a million times. I'm ready for this! I can't wait to fit into my skinny cloths again.

I remember back in 1975, when the Soviet Socialist Republic in the Soviet Union was still our enemy in the "Cold war"... My American Problems teacher at Cholla High School, Mr. Howard Cunningham, told us that in order for the world to survive.. the eastern European governments that held such strict control on freedoms, would have to loosen up their control and allow their people to have more individual freedoms... and that here, in the United States, we would have to lose some of our freedoms. And that eventually we would achieve a balance.

Today, a lot of what he told us has come true... the USSR no longer exists, and in its place separate states where a free people exist, the Berlin Wall came down, and other eastern countries have grown to allow their people to enjoy the benefits of freedom.

The Terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 - was the beginning of the curtailment of our freedoms in the United States in so many ways. Airports are now high security checkpoints, the nation has a Department of Homeland Security, and the once secure United States now has dangerous splinter cells and sleeper spies, whose only intent is to bring down this great nation.

The new enemy of the United States has grown a different face and body from the more intelligent ones we were used to in the USSR. This enemy is barbaric and self-destructive. No longer does the enemy has a sensibility that deters them for a Mutually Assured Destruction as the Soviets had... this enemy is hell bent on destroying all of God's creations, so that they can get their “reward” from the only deity that wants to subvert God himself.

But in this case it is political. It is all political... from the cowardly sneak attack on innocent men, woman and children whom Muslim extremists murdered in cold blood .. to the putting of a trophy mosque in the shadows of their deed, and in the dust of our dead.

Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, a cleric leading the effort to build their mosque at Ground Zero, plainly states that the site of the proposed mosque and Islamic center shouldn't be seen as "hallowed ground" in a neighborhood that also contains a strip club and a betting parlor.

That same site where nearly 3,000 human lives, (creations of God, if you really believe in God) were murdered by creatures that could only have been lovers of Satan himself.

Not hollowed Ground?? Rauf's statement only underscores the inability of the Muslim world to comprehend compassion, or have any remorse for the actions of a group that runs under the flag of the Muslim Religion. A callousness that does not go unnoticed by the people of a Nation that was founded by Christian beliefs.

It is political...and, it is personal.

President Obama emphasizes that "the United States was not at war with Islam." But that is a half-truth.

We Are at war with Islam... just, not an official war declared on by the American Government.
But you can hear and feel the truth in that statement. "We are at war with Islam”. How could it be any other way.. when they turned our planes into bombs that were intentionally aimed at killing innocent Americans lives?? No Different than the Japanese that attacked Pearl Harbor.


On the Eve of the anniversary of 9-11, President Obama, who is the poster child for the Muslim religion, stated :
"...One of the things that I most admired about President Bush was, after 9/11, him being crystal clear about the fact that we were not at war with Islam" Obama said, "We were at war with terrorists and murderers who had perverted Islam, had stolen its banner to carry out their outrageous acts."

Again only a half truth. As one American put it. “Not all Muslims are terrorists.. but all terrorists are Muslim."

When Islamic extremists can be sheltered, harbored and hidden in Islamic Mosques here in the United States... and their actions to subvert our Government and kill Americans can be implemented using the mosque that shelters them as a covert front in a “Don't ask, Don't tell” atmosphere - all become suspect.

When a Florida Church hosting an event to remember 9/11 victims and take a stand against Islam, invited Christians to burn the Muslim holy book at the church - The Church was well with-in their rights to do so.

The Freedom of speech, and the Freedom of Expression.
That is what the United States Stands for.... Our most basic right that we, as Americans, have is the ability to question those around us... to speak our minds... and to make judgments based on what we believe is right and wrong... And to express what we see and believe through speech and art...and yes, even in burning holly books like the Qur'an, or an

Slash and Burn: A Dr. Siri Mystery Set in Laos (Dr. Siri Mysteries)






Dr. Siri might finally be allowed to retire (again). Although he loves his two morgue assistants, he’s tired of being Laos’s national coroner, a job he never wanted in the first place. The presence of American soldiers in Laos is a hot-button issue for both the Americans and the Lao involved, and the search party includes high-level politicians and scientists. But one member of the party is found dead, setting off a chain of accidents Dr. Siri suspects are not completely accidental. Everyone is trapped in a cabin in the jungle, and the bodies are starting to pile up.
