ST. ENOCH CENTRE UNVEILS FIRST PHASE OF ?100M TRANSFORMATION

The stunning new look for Glasgow?s St. Enoch Centre was revealed today (Thursday 26th November) with the unveiling of the first phase of the facility?s ?100 million transformation by its owners Ivanhoe Cambridge.
World famous toy retailer Hamleys is the new star attraction at the revitalised mall and today took the wraps of the massive 30,000 square foot flagship store located in the Centre?s new glass box entrance at the intersection of Buchanan and Argyle Streets.
This is Hamleys? only UK opening this year and will bring to Glasgow all the magic and excitement which has made the toy specialist?s London store a must-see destination for shoppers and tourists.
And as well as the arrival of Hamleys, a host of other top retailers are coming to Glasgow for the first time as part of the transformation.
Glasgow?s style conscious shoppers can now also enjoy leading fashion brand Henleys and music-inspired culture clothing retailer Pulp, whilst looking forward to the arrival of jewellery and accessories specialist Folli Follie, and Swiss watch company Swatch.
Official Formula One merchandise store Wheels of Sport will offer customers a taste of F1 glamour and glitz via its high quality lifestyle branded clothing.The new-look mall will also be home to a massive new HM store which will trade across three levels, joining edgy fashion retailer G-Star which is already proving a big hit with shoppers.

?Their arrival not only provides a massive boost to St. Enoch?s profile, it also sends out a great message about Glasgow?s strength as a retail destination.
?The huge improvement in the Centre?s visibility is crucial and, of course, we?ve been able to attract quality retailers such as HM, Henleys, Folli Follie, Pulp, Wheels of Sport, Lambretta and Swatch, many of whom are coming to Scotland for the first time.?

?St. Enoch was appealing to us from the very start. Being the traditional location for second stores in the UK, it seemed only right to bring our second UK store to Glasgow.
?The Centre?s location on the city?s ?Golden Z? is important to us and the design and layout gives tremendous presence at the foot of Buchanan Street and Argyle Street.
?The quality tenant mix at the scheme is complementary for our business and with high-end brands such as Frasers nearby, the St. Enoch development promises to raise and maintain the high quality shopping offer that Glasgow has become renowned for.?
And as well as all the new names making their debut in Glasgow, some of the Centre?s favourite stores are also transforming their existing outlets. Anchor store Boots are expanding into a multimillion pound health and beauty flagship store while Dorothy Perkins, Burtons and Quiz all have major refurbishment programmes under way.
Further big name brands are set to be unveiled early in 2010 in the next phase of the Centre?s transformation.
The Centre?s food court offering has also undergone a major facelift and in addition to existing favourites such as Di Maggios, Wongs Chinese, O?Briens, McDonalds and KFC, coffee specialists Costa are opening a new flagship store overlooking St. Enoch Square. Ivanhoe Cambridge have also invested ?2 million in an extensive upgrading of the Centre?s car parking facilities.

A typical filthy valleys class 37 has moved up from it usual coal train duties to be in charge of a mixed bunch of four wheeled and bogied non passenger coaching stock. 37179 is approaching Cardiff General from the Newport direction with a parcels train, 19th February 1977. This locomotive has had many guises in its lifetime and is still in front line operation. It was new in October 1963 as D6879 and was allocated to Cardiff until transferred along the coast to Landore in October 1971. In the 1974 TOPS renumbering scheme it became 37179 and was still a Landore allocated engine at the time of this photograph. Transferred to Scotland (Eastfield) in April 1982 and moved back south to South Wales (Cardiff) again in March 1985. It then became a bit of a gypsy as over the next couple of years it had spells at Tinsley (twice), Gateshead, Thornaby and back to Cardiff before it entered Crewe Works for refurbishment and remerged in February 1987 as 37691. It moved back to Scotland (Motherwell) in April 1992 and south to Immingham in May 1993 and spent most of 1994 in store un-serviceable. In December 1995 it was allocated to European Passenger Services and became 37612. It did little work over the next two years until sold Direct Rail Services in June 1997 for whom it still now operates forty eight years after being built.
