Gustave A. Mayer House New Dorp, Staten Island, New York City, New York The Gustave A. Mayer House, a fine Italianate villa, was among the first rural residences in that style built on Staten Island and is a rare survivor of its type and period within the city limits. It is significant, as well, due to its virtually intact condition. In sympathy with the theories of the Picturesque espoused by Alexander Jackson Davis and his collaborator Andrew Jackson Downing, the house is placed to take best advantage of its sloping site. Occupying a crest overlooking a historically-important Staten Island crossroads, the Mayer House was originally built for David R. Ryers between 1855 and 1856 by an architect and/or builder unknown to us today. This symmetrically arranged, two-and-a-half-story frame structure is characterized by a full-width porch, consistently fine detailing, and elegant belvedere. In the 1890s confectioner and inventor Gustave Mayer made the villa both his home and place of business, there manufacturing innovative items such as fancy sugar wafers, decorative metal objects, and other products. Members of Mayer's family still occupy the house which dominates grounds that recall the original Picturesque landscaping, at one time carefully tended by Mayer himself. Early History of the Site The Mayer House's locality has been developed as far back as Staten Island's earliest colonization; the neighboring settlement at Nieuwe Dorp (1670s) was one of the island's first. Around 1720, the property was sold to the Vanderbilt family as farmland; however, the site included the juncture of routes leading to New York, Richmond, and Philadelphia which induced the Vanderbilts to accommodate travellers. A number of inns, "The Rose and Crown" and "The Black Horse" being the most renowned, were built at this intersection. The site's importance to Staten Island's history was ensured when Daniel D. Tompkins instituted his steamboat ferry line from the island's southern tip to New Jersey in 1817, making Richmond Road the preferred route from New York to points south. In 1855 the Parkinson family sold the old "Rose and Crown" property (which apparently had reverted to domestic use) to David R. Ryers. He was descended from a Dutch family which had settled in Flatbush as early as 1671 and was prominent in the eighteenth-century history of Staten Island. One of the few surviving members of the family, Ryers (also spelled Ryerse, Ryerss) owned the inn at the Richmond County Hall during the early 1850s and commanded the Westfield contingent of the New York State Militia. In 1855 he demolished "The Rose and Crown" and by 1856 had replaced it, at a higher elevation on the site, with the large Italianate residence still standing today. The Picturesque Movement and Technology in the United States During the second quarter of the nineteenth century, the work and publications of architect Alexander Jackson Davis (1803-92) and landscape architect Andrew Jackson Downing (1815-52) promoted a revolution in American rural and suburban architecture. Their conception of the house in relation to the surrounding landscape—secluded in nature and designed for the enjoyment of vistas—was based on English theories of the Picturesque, a painterly approach to scenery emphasizing texture, variation, and intricacy. In his only published work, Rural Residences (1837/38) , Davis offered the "first and most evocative" house pattern book for Americans interested in villa architecture, understood to be a country residence built by a person of means and taste, whose cultivated life required that the surroundings be laid out for the pleasure of its occupants. This model of rural life was furthered by the pattern books of Downing. Visiting the United States from Sweden between 1849 and 1851, Fredrika Bremer noted that "nobody, whether he be rich or poor, builds a house or lays out a garden without consulting Downing's works . .." Although public structures and the more costly and prestigious residences were often constructed in masonry, wood was the more available, and thus more economical, building material throughout much of the United States. The revolutionary balloon-framing system, popularized in Chicago during the 1830s, replaced the traditional and slow braced-frame construction method (involving hewn joints and massive timbers) with a quickly assembled frame of nailed joints and two-inch boards of varying width. It is significant, therefore, that in Victorian Cottage Residences Downing—apparently then unaware of the new system of construction—praised the aesthetic qualities of wooden frame structures. He wrote that bracketed construction gave a home a character of lightness; this concept, along with European influences, helped to inspire the development of Picturesque frame houses in America. In short, Downing's aesthetic recommendations had a technological counterpart; both influenced the reali Contaminated water of Yamuna. Bubbles can be seen on the surface of water due to some gas formation inside the polluted water. The waters of Yamuna distinguishable as "clear blue" as compared to silt-ridden yellow of the Ganges. However, due to high density population growth, rapid industrialization, today Yamuna is one of the most polluted rivers in the world, especially around New Delhi, the capital of India, which dumps about 58% of its waste into the river. Though numerous attempts have been made to clean it, the efforts have proven to be futile. Although the government of India has spent nearly $500 million to clean up the river, the river continues to be polluted with garbage while most sewage treatment facilities are underfunded or malfunctioning. In addition, the water in this river remains stagnant for almost 9 months in a year aggravating the situation. Delhi alone contributes around 3,296 MLD (million litres per day) of sewage in the river. The government of India over the next five years has prepared plans to rebuild and repair the sewage system and the drains that empty into the river. To address river pollution, certain measures of cleaning river have been taken by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) of the Government of India (GOI) in 12 towns of Haryana, 8 towns of Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi under an action plan (Yamuna Action Plan-YAP) which is being implemented since 1993 by the National River Conservation Directorate (NRCD) of the Ministry of Environment and Forests. The Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) is participating in the Yamuna Action Plan in 15 of the above 21 towns (excluding 6 towns of Haryana included later on the direction of Supreme Court of India) with soft loan assistance of 17.773 billion Japanese Yen (equivalent to about Rs. 700 crore INR) while GOI is providing the funds for the remaining 6 towns added later. The Indian government's plans to repair sewage lines are predicted to improve the water quality of the river 90% by the year 2010. The Effects of an Abnormally Large Head on the Screen during the Early Days of French Cinema or Les Effets d'une Anormalement Grande Tête sur l'Ecran pendant les Premiers Jours de Cinéma français. Pierre Francois Lacenaire was a favorite of the Parisian stage in the opening years of the 20th century and seemed a natural to make the transition from the theater to the emerging medium of film. He had an abnormally large head that for the most part was covered by the elaborate headgear and costuming appropriate for le ancien regime in the popular historical costume dramas of the period which would lessen the startling effect of sa tete gigantesque. The transition from stage to film forced Larcenaire into a more contemporary wardrobe since the medium was itself a recent technology. Modern clothing was ineffective in concealing his abnormality. Even with this challenge, directors such as Alice Guy-Blache felt that his professionalism and his superior acting skills would overcome the reality of his physical problem, mis-diagnosed at the time as Gigantism, which usually manifests symptoms in other areas and not just the skull. Guy-Blache and the producers of the film had not anticipated that this head, when projected on a screen many times larger than life and in contrast with the normal heads of the rest of the troupe, wildly exaggerated the effect and frightened nascent movie audiences unfamiliar with the peculiarities of the new medium. During the premiere of the film A Fool and His Money in 1912, children ran screaming from the theater and the audience rioted as a result of the shock and fear caused by the dramatic amplification of Pierre Lacenaire's head. The film was a total failure and ruinous to its producers. Guy-Blache was vilified in the press for her choice of Lacenaire and eventually had to leave France for safer confines in the burgeoning film industry that was emerging on the East Coast of the United States, primarily in the state of New Jersey. Lacenaire was summarily banished from the French film industry and treated as a leper in the cultural circles and salons that he charmed as a stage actor. He turned instead to a life of crime at which he excelled and where his hat size was no impediment. His new found talents included the art of loan sharking, protection rackets, prostitution and gambling. He amassed a fortune so vast that it eclipsed the combined earnings of the two top actors in French cinema, Abel Gance and Jean Gabin. Lacenaire not only thrived in the milieu of d'avant-guerre Parisien underworld but he maintained his criminal empire and robust health well into his seventies. His luck finally abandoned him permanently when he became the victim of an errant paving stone crushing his most prominent feature. The gendarmes were the intended recipients of this brickbat during the student uprising at the Sorbonne in May 1968 in Paris. Ironically, the cobblestone that felled the thespian and failed movie actor turned master criminal Pierre Francois Lacenaire was intended for a la bete noire de la societe de criminel, the police. The improvised missile was inexpertly launched by the Situationist author and firebrand Ivan Chtcheglov, who claimed that the paving stone was deflected by a similar object in flight heading in the same direction. The Situationist International revered Lacenaire as a precursor to their transgressive activities and admired his anarchic criminality. Chtcheglov was so overcome with the remorse and guilt of having killed a fellow malcontent in Lacenaire that he lost control of his mental faculties and was committed to an insane asylum that he never left. Retro Plastic Sunglasses : Smith Stance Sunglasses Polarized. Retro Plastic Sunglasses
Between Takes Being a model is a very tough job. Models are treated like mannequins. They are poked, pinched, stabbed by pins; stand for hours while being coifed and having makeup applied; and having the outfits fitted to their bodies. Plus, they have to keep reposing repeatedly for a shot until the photographer is pleased with the result. To us, on this side, it looks so glamorous. But, in reality, it is very hard and tiring work. I was lucky to join Nadja at one of her shootings. But, by 4pm, she was exhausted. So, between takes she slipped on her cozy little kimono robe, put a hairnet on her hair to protect it from ruining, and donned vintage retro pink sunglasses to protect her eyes from the glaring bright, and I mean bright, lights. Even dressed like this, she looks gorgeous and so glam. Nadja’s sunglasses are from Destiny here on Flickr. I bought many pairs from Destiny and am thrilled to death with them. She also has SHOES! For my Flickr groups… road rat In my memory, our VW camper was vast and magical. It smelled of vinyl and metal window screens and orange juice in a carton that my mother pulled from the small fridge behind the front seats. The plaid curtains lifted on the hot breezes of summer and I longed to sleep in the popup bunk that my sister claimed by right of primogeniture. I can’t recall if I ever actually sat on the thin foam of her little cubbyhole that rose over the roof of the bus like a crow’s nest peering out over strange seas; I remember only that she meted out peeks to me as I stood on my tiptoes, all curiosity and tense tendons, before she decided that was enough I had to go now, to play elsewhere with my Barbie in the strange wilderness where we had dropped anchor, to load her long hair and legs and her fashion sunglasses into her plastic red convertible and dream of racing along the open road. Two Glasses Are Better Than One EB ready for her closeup somewhere in New Zealand. She's wearing these cool local shades over her regular glasses. I think she actually bought these for a few bucks at Paddy's Market in Haymarket (Sydney) before we flew over to Wellington. They later ended up in a play in Kamloops and lost in the props room for a while, but were eventually returned by a considerate staffer at the Theatre. Old Lady Glasses - 145/365 When I was younger, I swore I would never wear "old lady sunglasses." I actually like these sunglasses since they fit over my regular glass and cost a LOT less than sunglasses. I like them better than the clip on variety as well.
