Chambers and operated until his death in 1946. The mill, and another mill in Lorane, several miles to the west, was sold to Warren Daugherty. Daugherty operated it until the early 1950s until fire destroyed most of it. Most of the surviving mill equipment, buildings and timberlands were sold to W.A. Woodard Lumber Company locacted a few short miles to the south. This photo shows US Highway 99 and the Southern Pacific Railroad line diagonally across the lower right. The still standing Chambers Railroad Covered Bridge is located in the upper left. The Oregon Pacific and Eastern Railroad, which at one time was owned by Chambers, had a spur line that fed this mill and the bridge that ran to the west to the operation in Lorane. UNHCR News Story: Detained Eritrean deserters leave Yemen for a new life in Sweden Refugees outside Kharaz camp in Yemen, a country from where 55 Eritrean deserters were recently resettled to Sweden. UNHCR / R. Nuri / 2010. Detained Eritrean deserters leave Yemen for a new life in Sweden SANA'A, Yemen, June 1 (UNHCR) – Military service is mandatory in many countries around the world, but in Eritrea it is often indefinite in duration and conducted under harsh conditions, prompting thousands of young men and women to desert and flee the country every year. Often, it might seem like jumping from the frying pan into the fire, with many ending up in prison in neighbouring countries. These are people of concern to UNHCR because of the consequences they would face if returned to Eritrea. Recently the refugee agency was able to help arrange the resettlement to Sweden of 55 Eritrean refugees who had been imprisoned in Yemen for almost two years. All had crossed the Gulf of Aden to flee the military and none of them can return to their homeland. The group flew to Stockholm last month, from where they would continue their journey to various cities across Sweden. Sweden receives around 1,900 refugees for resettlement every year and they are usually placed directly in a municipality, which could mean living in a rural or urban setting. A wide range of integration activities is arranged for them, including language classes. The entire group seemed to be delighted to be in Europe – far away from Eritrea and the memory of their ordeal in the military, and from their prolonged detention in poor conditions in Yemen. "In Eritrea, military service is mandatory and young men are forcibly recruited through round-ups which involve house, school and workplace searches," explained Ahmed, age 22. "In 2006, I was taken from school and forced to serve in the military for around US$15 a month. After three years, I decided to flee and head to Yemen," he told UNHCR shortly before leaving for his new life in the colder climes of Scandinavia. Military service is mandatory under Eritrean law; it's the difficult conditions and indefinite duration of service that strike fear into so many recruits. And those who are caught trying to desert or evade national service could face severely disproportionate and extra-judicial punishment. Another of the Eritrean men, Mahmood, said he knew that military recruitment would lead to persecution. "There is no freedom of choice. We are forced to serve for life, earning very little money; you can barely support yourself, let alone an entire family," he said in an apartment in Sana'a leased by UNHCR to house the refugees before their departure. Each of the 55 men accepted for resettlement in Sweden had a different tale to tell, but they shared a common willingness to make the dangerous boat journey across the Gulf of Aden from the Horn of Africa. Hundreds of people die every year trying to make this crossing. All were rounded up and interrogated for several days by the authorities after they arrived on the desolate beaches of Yemen. They were then detained in the Red Sea port of Hodeidah, Yemen's fourth largest city. "They sent us to the central prison without any explanation, so we were confused and soon began to lose hope," said Mahmood, who had planned to contact UNHCR and seek help in applying for asylum. The Yemeni authorities allow UNHCR to visit detention centres around the country to screen potential asylum-seekers and ensure that they receive protection assistance. UNHCR staff found that these Eritreans could not return home and there was clearly no future for them in Yemen. Resettlement was the only viable and sustainable answer for them and their names were referred to Sweden. "The day the UNHCR [protection] staff came to interview us in prison I became optimistic again about my future – and here we are," said a delighted Faisal. "I am happy because I will have a chance to study and work," added the 21-year-old, who wants to first learn the Swedish language and then study to become a doctor. None of those questioned by UNHCR regretted their decision to flee overseas, despite detention in Yemen. "I would have done the same thing even if I thought I would be imprisoned for five years. The real horror is what is waiting for me back home, not here," said Mahmood. By Cagri Hurmuzlu in Sana'a, Yemen Waiting for an after lunch coffee..:))) ZLATIBOR is a mountain of exquisite beauty. The Balkans is the historical name of a geographic region of southeastern Europe. The region takes its name from the Balkan Mountains, which run through the centre of Bulgaria into eastern Serbia. The region has a combined area of 550,000 km2 (212,000 sq mi) and a population of about 55 million people. The ancient Greek name for the Balkan Peninsula was “the Peninsula of Haemus” (?????????? ??? ?????, Chersonisos tou Aimou). The Balkans are adjoined by water on three sides: the Black Sea to the east and branches of the Mediterranean Sea to the south and west (including the Adriatic, Ionian, Aegean and Marmara seas). The identity of the Balkans is dominated by its geographical position; historically the area was known as a crossroads of various cultures. It has been a juncture between the Latin and Greek bodies of the Roman Empire, the destination of a massive influx of pagan Slavs, an area where Orthodox and Catholic Christianity met, as well as the meeting point between Islam and Christianity. The Balkans today is a very diverse ethno-linguistic region, being home to multiple Slavic, Romance, and Turkic languages, as well as Greek, Albanian, and others. Through its history many other ethnic groups with their own languages lived in the area, among them Thracians, Illyrians, Romans, Uzes, Pechenegs, Cumans, Avars, Celts, Germans, and various Germanic tribes. The Balkan region was the first area of Europe to experience the arrival of farming cultures in the Neolithic era. The practices of growing grain and raising livestock arrived in the Balkans from the Fertile Crescent by way of Anatolia, and spread west and north into Pannonia and Central Europe. In pre-classical and classical antiquity, this region was home to Greek city-states, Illyrians, Paeonians, Thracians, Epirotes, Mollosians, Thessalians, Dacians and other ancient groups. Later the Roman Empire conquered most of the region and spread Roman culture and the Latin language but significant parts still remained under classical Greek influence. During the Middle Ages, the Balkans became the stage for a series of wars between the Byzantine, Bulgarian and Serbian Empires. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balkans Related topics: retro kitchen decorations funky christmas decorations turquoise kitchen decor victorian decor style modern interior decorations pictures of wedding reception table decorations fireplace decorations ideas event decorating ideas traditional mexican decorations southwest decoration |

The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (Disney Gold Classic Collection) In the great tradition of SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS and CINDERELLA, Disney's 11th animated masterpiece, THE ADVENTURES OF ICHABOD AND MR. TOAD, introduced two literary classics to the screen. Through award-winning Disney-animated wizardry, these unforgettable children's stories come together as one fabulous adventure. THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS follows the wild ride of J. Thaddeus Toad, squire of Toad Hall. Smitten with motorcars, the wealthy and reckless sportsman soon drives his close friends Mole, Rat, and Angus MacBadger into a worried frenzy! Then meet Ichabod Crane, the spindly schoolteacher who dreams of sweeping the lovely Katrina off her feet -- until Brom Bones, the town bully, gets involved. Their comic rivalry introduces Ichabod to THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW, the fabled Headless Horseman, and a hair-raising, heart-thumping climax. Narrated by legendary stars Basil Rathbone and Bing Crosby, THE ADVENTURES OF ICHABOD AND MR. TOAD is brimming with high-spirited adventure, brilliant animation, and captivating music -- now available for the first time in keeping with Walt's original theatrical vision. This 1949 Disney feature has never been available on video in its original form until now. The 68-minute film contains two shorts: The Wind in the Willows and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The former is a lively version of Kenneth Grahame's book of animal adventures, including Mr. Toad, a rambunctious sort with a passion for motorcars. Basil Rathbone narrates the story. Sleepy Hollow is the Washington Irving story of a stuffy schoolmaster and his ability to win the love of the fair Katrina from the brutish Brom Van Brunt. Many fans will see a resemblance to Disney's masterpiece created some 40 years later, Beauty and the Beast, in style and story. The end is still scary enough to send youngsters under the table. Bing Crosby supplies the narration, character voices, and songs. The opening number in a library including two stories has been included in this good-looking restoration. The shorts were made in Disney's prime, a year before Cinderella, and the look is wondrous. The exaggeration of Ichabod's skinny frame and his slumping horse is a glorious example. --Doug Thomas (18) Disney's BoardWalk Disney's BoardWalk contains more than 9,000 square feet of shops, restaurants and nightclubs. It encompasses Crescent Lake and is a village on the water near many Disney Resort hotels in Walt Disney World Resort. This quarter-mile entertainment, dining and shopping area is also conveniently close to 2 Disney Theme Parks. With sherbet-colored building facades, striped awnings, rising columns and archways, Disney's BoardWalk is designed after the boardwalks that were famous during the turn of the 20th century along such coastal cities as Coney Island, New York and Atlantic City, New Jersey. Stroll along Disney's BoardWalk during the day to explore the unusual shops and restaurants. FAT ITALIAN CHEF KITCHEN DECOR : BEACH HOUSE DECORATION IDEAS. Fat Italian Chef Kitchen Decor
Fat: An Appreciation of a Misunderstood Ingredient, with Recipes For all of history, minus the last thirty years, fat has been at the center of human diets and cultures. When scientists theorized a link between saturated fat and heart disease, industry, media, and government joined forces to label fat a greasy killer, best avoided. But according to Jennifer McLagan, not only is our fat phobia overwrought, it also hasn’t benefited us in any way. Instead it has driven us into the arms of trans fats and refined carbohydrates, and fostered punitive, dreary attitudes toward food–that wellspring of life and pleasure. In Fat, McLagan sets out with equal parts passion, scholarship, and appetite to win us back to a healthy relationship with animal fats. She starts by defusing fat’s bad rap, both reminding us of what we already know–that fat is fundamental to the flavor of our food–and enlightening us with the many ways fat (yes, even animal fat) is indispensable to our health. Mostly, though, Fat is about pleasures–the satisfactions of handling good ingredients skillfully, learning the cultural associations of these primal foodstuffs, recollecting and creating personal memories of beloved dishes, and gratifying the palate and the soul with fat’s irreplaceable savor. Fat lavishes the reader with more than 100 recipes from simple to intricate, classic to contemporary, including: • Butter-Poached Scallops • Homemade Butter • Carnitas • Duck Confit • Sauteed Foie Gras with Gingered Vanilla Quince • Prosciutto-Wrapped Halibut with Sage Butter • Steak and Kidney Pie • Lamb Fat and Spinach Chapati • Bacon Spice • Cookies • Salted Butter Tart Observing that though we now know everything about olive oil, we may not know what to do with lard or bone marrow, McLagan offers extensive guidance on sourcing, rendering, flavoring, using, and storing animal fats, whether butter or bacon, schmaltz or suet. Stories, lore, quotations, and tips touching on fat’s place in the kitchen and in the larger culture round out this rich and unapologetic celebration of food at its very best. Jennifer McLagan's Pumpkin and Bacon Soup Jennifer McLagan is a chef, food stylist, and writer who has worked in London and Paris as well as her native Australia. Her book, Fat: An Appreciation of a Misunderstood Ingredient, with Recipes, won the Best Single Subject Cookbook award, as well as Cookbook of the Year, at the 2009 James Beard Awards. Her first book, Bones, was widely acclaimed, winning the James Beard Award for single-subject food writing. She is a regular contributor to Fine Cooking and Food & Drink. She has lived in Toronto for more than 27 years with her sculptor husband, Haralds Gaikis, with whom she escapes to Paris as often as possible. On both sides of the Atlantic, Jennifer maintains friendly relations with her butchers, who put aside their best fat and bones for her. (Photo © Rob Fiocca) Pumpkin and Bacon Soup (Makes 3 quarts/3 l) Ingredients 1/2 pound/225 g side (slab) bacon 1 large onion, sliced 1 stalk celery, sliced 1 large sprig sage hubbard squash or other firm, dry pumpkin or winter squash (about 3-1/3 pounds/1.5 kg) 8 cups/2 l water Coarse sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Directions Remove the rind and any hard, dry skin from the bacon. Cut the bacon into 1/4-inch/6-mm dice. Place a large saucepan over low heat, add the bacon pieces, and cook gently so they render their fat. When most of their fat is rendered, add the onion, celery, and sage, stirring to coat with the fat. Cook until the vegetables soften slightly, about 7 minutes. Cut the squash into quarters and remove the seeds. Peel the squash and coarsely chop into smaller, even-sized pieces. Set aside. Pour 1 cup/250 ml of the water into the pan with the vegetables, increase the heat to high and, using a wooden spoon, deglaze the pan, scraping up the browned bits on the bottom. Add the remaining 7 cups/1.75 l water, the squash pieces, 1 tablespoon of salt, and some pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil, lower the heat, and simmer, covered, until the squash is very soft, 30 to 45 minutes. Remove the sage and let the soup cool slightly. Puree the soup, in batches, in a blender and pour into a clean saucepan. Taste and adjust the seasoning, and reheat the soup to serve. Aviano, Pordenone, North east of Italy 395 en Explore - 21-10-2008 fat italian chef kitchen decor An eclectic and highly original examination of one of the most dynamic concepts-and constructs-in the world. With more than one billion overweight adults in the world today, obesity has become an epidemic. But fat is not as straightforward-or even as uni-versally damned-as one might think. Enlisting thirteen anthropologists and a fat activist, editors and anthropologists Don Kulick and Anne Meneley have produced an unconventional-and unprecedented-examination of fat in various cultural and social contexts. In this anthology, these writers argue that fat is neither a mere physical state nor an inert concept. Instead, it is a construct built by culture and judged in courts of public opinion, courts whose laws vary from society to society. From the anthropology of "fat-talk" among teenage girls in Sweden to the veneration of Spam in Hawaii; from fear of the fat-sucking pishtaco vampire in the Andes to the underground allure of fat porn stars like Supersize Betsy-this anthology provides fresh perspectives on a subject more complex than love handles, and less easily understood than a number on a scale. Fat proves that fat can be beautiful, evil, pornographic, delicious, shameful, ugly, or magical. It all depends on who-and where-you are. (6) a hug for my main squeeze Patrick and I ran away recently, just a weekend, just the two of us, no dogs or anything. Even the cat was forced to stay home (haha). We had a smashing visit to the Sea Lion Caves (where we indeed saw the Sea Lions, very cool) and where I nearly broke my neck on the slippery rocks surrounding Devil's Churn in the pouring rain. We didn't make plans in advance and by 8 pm on a Saturday night in Florence, OR we needed a place to stay. Even the Best Western was over-priced for a single night in December so we drove up and down the street looking at various places, judging their sketchiness, calling their office and basing decisions on the demeanor at the front desk, we even spent some time in a parking lot using pirated wireless trying to find a place to stay on travel websites. We finally found a tacky bizarre little place, where the sweat-pants and stained Betty Boop t-shirt wearing owner was actually friendly, if not a bit odd, and for $50 we decided hell with it. We opted for the more expensive room which had been "remodeled" and resembled a retirement home from hell. But the carpet was new, the mattress was new, the decor was simply...craft show chic. But we were warm and dry and had a recommendation for a local restaurant, so it worked for a night. Hell, if forced to we'd stay there again for the price. : ) We also visited Hug Point so I could see a waterfall at the ocean. I always like photos I take of Patrick while we're out. This one is really cool, thanks to the peephole I caught a lot of the scenery. I am desperately wanting to get out of the house and get my film developed from Devil's Churn (where I also got splashed by a rogue wave, they aren't kidding when they tell you to watch your ass there) and from the Gorge this week. I am also desperately wanting it to be January 13th already, so I can try to face another year. I need a job. I need the holidays to pass. I need the 12th to pass. I need a job, did I mention that? I need a new camera. I need to stop worrying and being so damned needy, before poor Patrick smothers me with a pillow. So, as he liked this shot a great deal, and as I had a cute title for it, this one is for him. For putting up with me. And for putting up with the smell of sea-lion shit so I could see an Oregon tourist trap. And for putting up with buying a third pair of swim trunks, only to stay at a place without a pool. And for putting up with my dogs, who sometimes, like tonight, have vile, room clearing gas. He tries to blame it on me, but if I could clear a room like that I'd wear it like a badge of honor. It's really that impressive! Anyway, to my Patrick, to our first holiday season together...hugs and kisses. : ) Roo Rohan Halloween season is a good time of year for my nephew - his mom Jane has a great eye for costumes, which she seems to conjure from thin thrifty air, and if wee Rohan does not perhaps understand the context of the dress-up game, he still loves the attention he gets when he wears them. And he always looks adorable when he gets them on. So I've seen him as tiger, as pirate, as doggy, and now, at this chilly rainy-day Fall Kids Fest at Madison Square Park, he's a kangaroo. Which is completely appropriate, as he flies back to his home in Sydney the next day, after a month-long visit with the New York wing of his family. In the meantime, there's a pumpkin patch and Halloweeny decor, and little people in costumes as far as the eye can see. pirate decor for kids Find all your favorite posters and art prints at Barewalls.com, the Web's leading art retailer. The Greenbrier Presidential Express is a significant contribution to the new age of rail. THE GREENBRIER TO LAUNCH LUXURY RAIL TRAVEL EXPERIENCE The Greenbrier Presidential Express to Debut in 2012 The luxury train experience returns in July 2012 with the debut of The Greenbrier Presidential Express. Through this one-of-a-kind experience, The Greenbrier will bring its signature decor and service to Washington, DC’s Union Station, where guests can board for a five-hour, non-stop trip to the award-winning resort. The 15-car train will accommodate up to 240 passengers and will feature a board room car, salon car and even an open-air car. “We want to bring The Greenbrier experience to Washington, DC and bring back the glamour of rail travel,” said Jim Justice, chairman and owner of The Greenbrier. “Everything from the decor to the food will make you feel as if you are already at the resort.” World-renowned decorator and the resort’s curator Carleton Varney, president of the Dorothy Draper & Company, with his associate Brinsley Matthews have taken The Greenbrier’s signature Dorothy Draper decor and applied it to the train’s interiors and exterior. A team of 40 skilled craftsmen in Pottstown, Pennsylvania are refurbishing all 15 cars with the finest woods and fabrics. The cars, originally built in the 1950s, served as the long distance trains for the Union Pacific and Santa Fe railroads. “Since the time I arrived here, I’ve tried my best to bring West Virginia’s strong values to Washington,” Senator Joe Manchin III said. “But I am thrilled that The Greenbrier Presidential Express will soon bring people directly to West Virginia to see our beautiful state, meet our wonderful people, and enjoy the place we all call home. The train service will take travelers directly to our state’s crown jewel – The Greenbrier resort – and allow them to learn about and enjoy its illustrious history. The Presidential Express is good for The Greenbrier, for West Virginia’s economy, for Amtrak and for all of the people who will get to enjoy our beautiful state. Congratulations to everyone who had a hand in making this happen.” This project is being designed, built and operated by a new West Virginia company, The Greenbrier Express Company, Inc., co-founded by Jim Justice, Paul Nichini and Ross Rowland.
