broken window theory
Broken windows theory is a criminological theory of the normsetting and signalling effects of urban disorder and vandalism on additional crime and anti-social behavior. The theory states that monitoring and maintaining urban environments in a well-ordered condition may prevent further vandalism as well as an escalation into more serious crime.

Mr Tuin worked on the living room windows most of the day. this is the view from my office - a south facing room. these windows were replaced a few days later - the cloudiness in the windows was caused by condensation that formed after the seals broke and allowed moisture to be trapped between the panes

USB socket repair on Korg Nanokontrol - wires everywhere.
I soldered wires between the pins of the USB socket and the next component in the circuit. Two of the pins are shorted to ground and I connected them to the ground on that CON2 header... maybe some secret serial header for developing the microcontroller software.
The full story (for a twitter friend!):
When the USB socket came off it tore up the solder pads that it was connected to, so I gave up on reconnecting it and let it sit for six months. Later, I had the idea of following the traces back to the next component!
So, the USB socket has 4 pins, Ground, +5V, and two data pins (tx and rx right? (or am I wrong?)). Ground was the easiest, because it could be soldered to any grounded place on the board, I used the ground pin on the CON2 header (you can tell because it connects to the giant green area which connects to the casing of the USB socket.
Following the other three pins' traces leads to three tiny surface mount resistors, so I soldered pickup wires to each one.
By far the hardest part of this was soldering hookup wire to the TINY pins on the USB connector, the pins are very small since they solder straight on the board underneath. I used some tape to help keep the solder joint together and insulate them from each other.
After the pins were connected I tested the nanokontrol and it worked (phew) so I soldered the USB socket back onto the board and then locked everything down with tape. I added some foam inside the case to squish everything together tightly so that it wouldn't break again.
So far--- everything is ok and I've performed about 25 times with the nanokontrol! (I broke it before I had even one performance when it was new......)

Saint Mary's, Roscommon
ROSCOMMON ABBEY.
Fr Ambrose Coleman, O.P.
FOUNDED in 1253, by Phelim O'Connor, king of Connaught, son of Cathal Crovedearg.
1257. The monastery of Mary in Roscommon was consecrated by Thomas O'Conor [bishop of Elphin] for the Friars Preachers.
1261. Murarius Duach O'Konneker was prior.
1265. The founder was interred here this year. He "died, after the victory of unction and penance in the Monastery of the Friars Preachers of St. Dominick at Roscommon, which he himself had dedicated to God and granted to that Order." Annals of the Four Masters. His monument still remains and is a fine piece of Irish work of the thirteenth century. The recumbent figure of the monarch lies on the tomb, in front of which are carved eight gallowglasses in the dress of their time.
1266. Amongst the fourteen documents (two orders to pay and twelve receipts) relative to crusade money, in the custody of the Friars Preachers, Dublin, which the prior and community caused to be transcribed, sealed with the common seal and forwarded to John, bishop of Clonfert, Papal Nuncio, in Ireland, on the Feast of SS. Fabian and Sebastian [Jan. 20], A.D. 1275, the following is the eighth :
"To all who shall see or hear the present letters, Thomas, by Divine permission, bishop of Lismore, executor of the business of the Cross [Crusade] in Ireland, health in the Lord. Know that we have received at At[h]lon[e], on the day of SS. Processus and Martinian [July 2], A.D. 1266, from the friars Eneas, then prior, and Comdinus, subprior, of the Friars Preachers of Roscoman [sic], 92 marks of Crusade money, collected by themselves and -their other friars up to said time, within their limitation and not beyond.
We have also received from the same friars 17 shillings and 10 pence of Crusade money, collected by the prior and friars of the same Order of the house of Slygaht [Sligo], within the limitation of same and not beyond.
" In testimony whereof, etc. given the day, year and place, aforesaid."
Eneas, there can be little doubt, was Gilla-na-naem (Devotee of the saints) ; Comdinus, there can be no doubt was Gilla-in-Coimded (Devotee of the Lord). The collection, the text shows, was made by quest, otherwise it could not be known whether the donors resided within the limit. It is deeply to be regretted that the friars did not supply transcripts of the names of the respective localities, persons and amounts. Data of the kind, needless to say, would have been of the utmost historical value.
1269. Imhar O'Birn, servant and confidential man to Aedh O' Conor, withdrew from the world, from the midst of his children and affluence, after resolving to pass his life in Roscommon, in the monastery of the Friars Preachers., Annals of Lock Ce.
1270. "Item, domus fratrum et villa de Roscoman combusta est." Annales de Monte Fernando.
1274. Eogan, son of Ruaidhri Ua Concobair, king of Connaught for a quarter of a year, was killed in the Monastery of the Friars in Roscomain, by his own kinsmen. Annals of Ulster.
1275. May 27. "The King had learned by letters of the bishop of Elphin and of James de Audley, formerly justiciary of Ireland, that during the troubles between the said James and him who called himself King of Connaught, the former took from the church of the Dominicans of Roscommon ?7 8s. 11d., out of moneys deposited there by poor persons of that country, through fear of the troubles ; that the said James further took from that church wheat and other provisions, worth ?8 2s. 7d., timber worth ?16, oats worth ?4 6s. 8d., and wheat worth ?1 4s. 4d., all which were converted to the use of James and the army which accompanied him. The King now commands his treasurer of Ireland to make without delay due restitution, as well to the Dominicans as to the owners of the above property."
In 1282, there is an entry in the treasurer's books to the effect that the Dominicans received this year at Easter 40 shillings, in part payment of the debt of Roscommon, and there is another entry of the same kind two years later.
1293. A provincial .chapter was held here.
1308. A bolt of fire [lightning] fell on the Monastery of the Friars in Roscomain, so that it broke down the monastery. Annals of Ulster. According to the Annals of Loch Ce and Mageoghegan, this happened at night, on the eve of St. Stephen's Day.
1348. Simon, O.P., prior of Roscommon abbey, was appointed to the see of Cloyne and consecrated. It was discovered, however, that the bishop of that see was not dead, and as Derry was vacant, Simon was appointed to the latter see, on Dec. 18th of the following year.
1395. Gregory Ileyan, [or I'Lathnan], bishop of Kilmacduagh, was buried here.
1409. O'Conor Roe and O'Kelly pitched a camp around Roscommon, on which occasion they destroyed the corn of the town and of the monastery, lest intelligence (of their doings) should reach the castle. Annals of the Four Masters.

UNHCR News Story: UNHCR welcomes resumption of return movements in northern Sri Lanka
Returnees wait to receive their shelter grant last year in northern Sri Lanka.

UNHCR welcomes resumption of return movements in northern Sri Lanka
GENEVA, April 27 (UNHCR) – The UN refugee agency on Tuesday welcomed the resumption of government-led return movements in northern Sri Lanka, following a three-week pause for the general election, the Sinhala holiday and the Tamil New Year. Some 7,000 internally displaced people (IDP) have returned to their homes in the districts of Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu since the operation resumed last week.
Some 207,000 IDPs have left camps in the north and east of the country since the organized return process began in August last year. They have either returned to their homes or are staying with friends and relatives in Vavuniya, Mannar, Jaffna and other districts.
"People are returning to areas which suffered major destruction," UNHCR spokesperson, Andrej Mahecic, told journalists in Geneva. "To assist them to rebuild their lives, we are providing each returning family with a shelter cash grant of 25,000 rupees [$US220] through the state Bank of Ceylon. More than 40,000 families had already received the cash grant by March," he added.
In the past month, UNHCR was forced to suspend this assistance due to a funding shortfall, but thanks to recent contributions by donors, the refugee agency will be restarting the shelter cash grants by the end of the week. Most of these funds will be used to assist some 10,000 families who have returned to their homes but have not yet received the grant due to the suspension.
"There are still some 82,000 people living in the camps or with host families in the north and more returns are expected to take place this year. However, more funds are urgently needed for families who are expected to return in the coming weeks and months," Mahecic stressed.
A recent UNHCR assessment showed that although some families used the cash grants to start repairing their houses or to construct new shelters, others use the grant according to their own priorities. Many returnees purchased bicycles, which allows them to access services, transport goods and re-establish social networks. Some families may also use the money to pay for labour for land clearance or invest it in starting up small businesses.
Meanwhile, UNHCR continues to distribute other relief aid to returnees such as plastic mats, mosquito nets, clothing and jungle clearing tools. Mine clearance efforts are continuing as well as the government's reconstruction of infrastructure after years of war. Livelihood activities and general services such as transport, health and education are still lacking in most of the return areas. Addressing these issues will help anchor the returns.
"During return monitoring, many communities tell us about the issues they are facing upon return. For instance, single women as heads of households in the Vanni region say they have few opportunities to generate income upon return. They also face challenges in obtaining certain types of documentation, such as death certificates for their deceased husbands," Mahecic said, adding: "These documents are necessary to become eligible for widow's allowances and governmental support."
In the final fighting of the long war last April and May, about 280,000 people had been displaced. They ended up in more than 40 camps, mainly in the Menik Farm site in the Vavuniya region.
The camps are now hosting less than one third of their initial population. Returns and the subsequent decongestion eased the pressure on the health, food and water services. IDPs continue to use the pass system to leave and re-enter the camps.

I stopped by this place not to long ago in Moorhead MN. You wouldn't think it was open except for that little sign on the door. I didn't have a camera for him to repair but I really just wanted to see what was inside. It was like walking into a dusty old camera museum. He had cameras on shelves, behind glass, in boxes.. every where. He had prints on the wall that he had taken. He said. he doesn't repair many film cameras any more mostly digital. He was excited to know that I still shoot film and started asking me lots of questions. Wanted to know where I got it developed, where I buy the film, Of course I asked him if any of his cameras were for sale and he said no. He doesn't shoot much anymore but they remind him of a better time. I plan on stopping by again soon. He was a nice guy that seemed very interested to be conversing with this girl about film. I don't think he has done that it a long time.

Central Salt Lake Valley, Oquirrh Mountains, historic flume in Big Cottonwood Canyon
July 16, 2011, lower Big Cottonwood Canyon, Salt Lake County, Utah. Construction on the water flume (middle/right) began in 1896 and was completed in 1897. It remained in use until 1998 when it was replaced with an underground pipe. The total length of the flume was about 1.5 miles and its purpose was power generation: it connected two small power plants, the Stairs Plant at the upper, east end, and one at the base of the canyon to the west, the Granite Power Plant, and owned by the Utah Power Company (later Utah Power and Light). UP&L continued to own the flume throughout its life. Because it was built of wood, it had to be continually repaired. Rock slides and falling boulders also created problems. Documented occurrences involving damage to the flume for example happened as recently as July of 1987 and December of 1994 when the flume was still in operation.
Despite the high amount of visitation that Big Cottonwood Canyon receives for both winter and summer recreation, visitors often are not aware of the existence of the flume that is perched high above vehicular traffic and that is mostly not easily visible when traveling up the canyon, and which is easily missed in view of its short distance and location on visitors proceed back down the canyon.

Step 3 - Remove the OEM focusing screen
OEM focusing screen comes out next.
I talked to the sales guy @ Vetco - the last local "Mom and Pop" electronics store. He used to work camera repair and said that their standard practice is to invert the camera and shake the dang thing out.
No thanks. Here I used the dental pick to very lightly nudge the edges of the focusing screen. Again, it will swing down toward the mirror.
I am using the tweezers that came with the focusing screen. They are metal, and have very sharp edges on them. Quite frankly, plastic ESD safe tweezers are better, but all the ones in my day job are covered with sticky resin flux residue.
Messed up fan blades. (Repairing a broken mixer)
The fan blades are really chopped up!
I used a sharp knife to trim down the fan blades a little, trying to make them as smooth as possible.

Database Management Systems
Database Management Systems provides comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of the fundamentals of database systems. Coherent explanations and practical examples have made this one of the leading texts in the field. The third edition continues in this tradition, enhancing it with more practical material. The new edition has been reorganized to allow more flexibility in the way the course is taught. Now, instructors can easily choose whether they would like to teach a course which emphasizes database application development or a course that emphasizes database systems issues. New overview chapters at the beginning of parts make it possible to skip other chapters in the part if you don't want the detail. More applications and examples have been added throughout the book, including SQL and Oracle examples. The applied flavor is further enhanced by the two new database applications chapters.

Sunshine Radio Luxembourg
Sadly - the operators decided to cease transmission from this studio, and indeed to cease tx at all! So it has now been sold off - and exists no more - ah well :) - I leave my original comments below - but clearly most of them now have no foundation.........
I built this studio (even the woodwork!) - and I programme music on the Internet 24/7/365 - a mix of oldish stuff which I like (Beats playing CDs!) and some recent stuff - No DJs - just back-to-back music with the sparodic jingle to help transitions..... (no Rap - and nothing to set your nerves on edge! - this is "ear candy" according to ME - god its good to be the programme boss!)
Tune in and let me have your comments - For PC you'll need Winamp - which you can get on the site. Mac users can listen using iTunes. All of this is done as part of TTV - a Luxembourg cable TV company - which I freelance for.
Best with Broadband - otherwise you could find the audio skips due to buffer problems - this is down to the fact that we send out a very high quality signal.
Once you have loaded the Sunshine Radio stream and it is playing via Winamp - you can continue to surf the net - Winamp will keep streaming the audio until you stop it.
I welcome proposals for the playlist - perhaps your choice will get aired - so make it a good one!

1939 BSA roadster
Today's work; fitted the Philidyne rim dynamo plus the front and rear lamps after mending the broken bracket on the rear lamp, fitted a big brass Lucas bell in place of the smaller chromed Lucas one which had a very dead tone. I have also cleaned the rust (well most of it) off the front rim using wire wool but had not done it when I took this photo. Also, after I took this photo, I noticed bad cracking in the leather around the nose of the original BSA saddle; if I allow this to remain the saddle will eventually split. So I have replaced it with a well used but sound Brookes B90 for the time being while I assess the situation. Another job will be to wire up the lamps to the dynamo, but that's for later.
first solution to our problem
So we pulled out one of our wedding gifts, a wet/dry shop vac (thanks Ross and Lyssa Zimmerman!) and we sucked up the water and gunk many times and had to wheel it to the downstairs bathroom to empty it and go back (jer had to lift it as I am still on weight restriction, I held the hoses and the electric plugs)

UK - London - Bankside: HMS Belfast
HMS Belfast, the Royal Navy's heaviest ever cruiser, was one of the two ships forming the final sub-class of British Town-class cruisers, the other being HMS Edinburgh. Belfast is now a museum ship in London.
The Town class cruisers were constrained to less than 10,000 tons by the Washington Naval Treaty. Originally intended to have quadruple 6 inch gun mountings, problems with building them caused the design to be reverted to using improved versions of the triple mountings fitted to the earlier ships of the class. The improved mountings neverthess were lighter than the original ones, and the weight saved was used to improve the ship's armour and anti-aircraft defences.
Belfast was launched on St Patrick's Day in 1938 at Harland and Wolff Shipyard in Belfast by the wife of the then prime minister, Neville Chamberlain. At that time, the budgeted overall cost of the ship was ?2,141,514, of which ?75,000 was for the guns and ?66,500 for aircraft. She was commissioned in August 1939 under the command of Captain G A Scott DSO and assigned to the 18th Cruiser Squadron.
When the Second World War started, the 18th Cruiser Squadron was used as part of the British efforts to impose a naval blockade on Germany. Working as part of the squadron, Belfast intercepted the German liner Cap Norte on October 9, 1939 as the liner was trying to return to Germany disguised as a neutral ship. On November 21, 1939 the ship was seriously damaged by a magnetic mine as she left the Firth of Forth, injuring 21 crew. The damage broke the keel and wrecked the hull and machinery to such an extent that it took nearly three years to repair her, the work being carried out at Devonport. She returned to service in the Home Fleet in November 1942 under the command of Captain Frederick Parham. Improvements had been made to the ship during her repairs, notably bulged amidships to improve her stability and fitting the latest radar and fire control; and increasing her displacement from 11,175 tons to 11,553 tons, making her Britain's heaviest cruiser.
She was made flagship of the Tenth Cruiser Squadron, under Rear-Admiral Robert Burnett when she provided cover for Arctic convoys to the Soviet Union. On December 26, 1943, in what developed into the Battle of North Cape, the cruiser squadron encountered the German Gneisenau class battlecruiser Scharnhorst, and with the battleship HMS Duke of York subsequently sunk her.
The ship was part of the escort force in Operation Tungsten in March 1944, a large carrier-launched airstrike against the Tirpitz, at that stage the last surviving German heavy warship, which was moored at Altenfjord in northern Norway. Although the attack failed to destroy Tirpitz, the ship was hit by 15 bombs and severely damaged.
Belfast took part in the bombardment of enemy positions at the beginning of the landing phase of the D-Day landings, Operation Neptune, in June 1944 as flagship of bombardment Force E. This was part of the Eastern Eastern Naval Task Force, with responsibility for supporting the British and Canadian assaults on Gold and Juno beaches and, at 5.30 am on 6 June 1944, was one of the first ships to fire on German positions.
For the next five weeks the ship was almost continuously in action, firing thousands of rounds from her 6 inch and 4 inch batteries in support of troops until the battlefront moved so far inland as to be outside of the range of her guns. Her final shoot in the European war was on July 8, during Operation Charnwood, the battle to capture Caen, when she engaged German positions in company with the battleship HMS Rodney and the monitor HMS Roberts.
Two days later she returned to Devonport for a short refit for service in the Far East, and joined Operation Zipper which was intended to expel the Japanese from Malaya but turned into a relief operation following the Japanese surrender.
She also served in the Korean War, in which her guns were used for naval bombardment in support of the United Nations forces. In July 1952 she was hit by a Communist battery, killing one and wounding four others. Between 1959-62 the ship operated in the Far East on exercises and "showing the flag". In December 1961 she provided the British guard of honour at Dar-es-Salaam during the Tanganyika independence ceremony. The ship left Singapore on March 26, 1962 for the UK where she made a final visit to Belfast and after an exercise in Mediterranean was paid off. Following a campaign led by Rear Admiral Sir Morgan Morgan-Giles DSO OBE CM, a former captain of the ship, she was brought to London to become a museum ship and was first opened to the public on Trafalgar Day, October 21, 1971.
Costumes
PROJECT INSANITY ALBUM
AAAAUUUUGGGHHH!!! THE FREAKING COSTUME! (Not Willie's or Paul's costume; just mine)
PITA Quotient: Major
Planned Project: NO!
I bought my costume during Spirit's post-Halloween sale in *2007*. Expensive sucker, even on sale. Like an idiot, I did not try it on in the store, nor did I try it on until the week before Halloween 2008. It's marked size small, but *should* have fit since my size range was listed.
Well.
No matter *what* I tried, I couldn't get it to go over my boobs nor my hips. It should have fit. Stupid me for not figuring this out ahead of time. Being short, I *knew* I'd have to take up the hem, but the rest of it? Nuh-uh. My normal size is a 4-6. Usually, that means size small. Sometimes, that means size *extra-small*. But sometimes, that also means size *medium*. Frickin'-frackin' lack of continuity in clothing sizes.
I can sew, but this would have involved a zipper, something I don't wanna mess with if I can avoid it. Grieved for a few days, then thought I might be able to use low-tech means for splicing in part of the cut-off hem around the zipper. Okay, so I carefully used a seam ripper to remove the zipper, preserving every last smidge of fabric seaming that I could, and then used fabric adhesive tape to splice in leftover material from the cut-off hem. Then I used supposedly permanent Velcro designed for fabrics to replace the zipper. Used more fabric tape to hide the Velcro with wide, black ribbon, ending in a short, triangular tail flopping over mah butt. This was necessary to hide the fuglee area where the extra fabric and Velcro all merged with the back seam of the peplum and skirt.
Wasn't certain it would work in the end, especially when the Velcro wound up bunching vertically (argh!), but thought that, in the end, my hair would cover any evils that I hadn't been able to disguise by design. (Heaven forbid I should have any time to put my hair up into a bun anyway, she-who-is-totally-fumble-fingered with this super-fine baby hair crappe.)
I also had zero time to sew the cut hem, so I resorted to using Fray Check in a pinch. Also tried a brief experiment with a small section of hem through a candle flame. Uhm, no. Fray-Check it was.
It took a whole week to accomplish alla the sundry repairs and sleight of hand, along with all of the other last-minute things I needed to do at the same time (including shortening Paul's costume . . . it looks too short in the photos, but I think he hiked it up under the belt a little to avoid overheating underneath all of that polyester).
Finally, at the appointed hour on the day of the party (October 25th), I slid on the costume, Paul sealed me in with the Velcro, aaaaaaaaand . . . so far, so good! It looked great, and nobody was any the wiser. How-some-ever . . . thank GAWD I didn't sit down until the party was finally winding down. At first, I didn't notice anything, but as time went on, I kept noticing that my hair was getting stuck in what I presumed was the Velcro closure in back. Except . . . it seemed to be getting *too* stuck for it to have been just Velcro. Finally, it dawned on me that that too-stuck feeling is typical of getting my hair stuck in things with adhesive on them. Uhm. Uh-oh. Sure enough, sitting down was exactly what it took for nearly allllllllll of the allegedly permanent fabric adhesives to decide they were giving up the ghost. All of my carefully planned splicing sort of sprung leaks everywhere. My hair, as usual, went on an immediate search-and-destroy mission for anything remotely sticky, and was the early warning system that something was amiss.
Fortunately, it was the end of the evening, and we were among friends who groaned in sympathy with me, but . . . frack! Alla that ding-dang work, undone in one fell swoop. Shiitake, and other expletives deleted.
