'Feathers' the Duck ~ Set Free Any single parent knows the seemingly unending challenges in raising children by yourself. I am a single father to three of the most amazing girls that I've ever met. I've tried to raise them to be compassionate, considerate... to be responsible and to have good judgement... to understand that their actions can make some difference in our world... that they have within them the power to make changes to our reality... Today I am so filled with pride. On May 20th my daughter came home with a brood of tiny ducklings in her tee shirt. She had tears in her eyes. Mama duck was killed by a car and the ducklings were milling about their mama's smooshed body waiting for some miracle that would never come... They must've just hatched because they were so tiny and helpless... cute with their fluffy yellow and brown down and their tiny little duckbills... My daughters decided that they'd raise these little fuzzballs... They researched and they learned all about the care of ducklings... they took turns staying up late to adjust the lights that kept them warm... they'd read next to them and watch for signs that they were too cold or too hot. Every day they'd feed them and clean their pen. In the first days we lost a couple and the house was filled with tears. It was a heartbreaking time. Dad had to have the sensitivity to let them absorb this lesson... that there is no substitute for the skill of a mother duck in raising her chicks... that the girls were doing their best... that nature was 'culling' the weakest chicks so that the strong could survive... And dad had to leave the room for a few minutes after trying to teach them that one. They had to raise these ducklings and I had to raise them. Still the tears flowed and there were a couple of duck funerals in our backyard... one of my daughters got really upset and claimed 'this is all my fault!' I let the lessons sink in and I encouraged them as much as I could... I never did anything more than capture the ducks when they got out... They knew that they were doing this on their own. As the little ducks grew the joy of watching them grow overcame the sadness of the early loss and their waddling around the yard made us all laugh and smile... Each day the girls took care of them... each night they put them to bed in a tiny pen in our shed... in the morning they'd put them in another pen theyd built in the yard... give them baths with the hose and feed them... The little ducks grew and they grew so fast and pretty soon we all knew it was time to let them go. I had told them in the first days that if they could raise just one of the ducks to maturity that they'd done a good job. They raised four. Today we let the last one go... 'Feathers.' She'd become quite 'imprinted' on us... she was the one I'd run into in my bathroom... she was the one who thought she was a person... she was the one who'd walk into the house if the door was left open... she was the one who expected a seat at the dinner table... We drove in my truck to the pond near our house and my youngest daughter insisted at the last minute on carrying Feathers in her arms so she could give her one last hug. There would be no more baths with her duck friend. There were some tears as we said goodbye and Feathers waddled into the water... She let out some quacks of joy and she looked really happy. Then she ran across the water and joined her siblings who'd been in the pond for two days. She started eating right away. My daughters tears dried up and they became filled with pride as Feathers started swimming and cavorting with the others... They knew right there that they had done this... I told them how proud I was of them and gave a round of hugs and took some pictures. The proudest one at the pond right there was me. It's moments like this that make all of the challenges and all of the struggle so worth it... these moments are the payoff. Moments when you see the product of the way you've raised your children. These girls will make a difference in our world. They already have. Rik Jeanne saved my soul again last night, she bathed me in love. She told me I was beautiful, and then I made her come a lot. She made me special perfumed tea, went and bought patisserie, put on music: Bob Marley, lay me back and fed me. She read a poem by Baudelaire, sitting naked in a chair, her perfume filled the holy air, and eased my tired heart. She lit a fire later on, put her bra and panties on. I watched her as her beauty shone, and filled my empty soul. And though I did my best and tried, sadness claimed me and I cried. She wiped the wetness from my eyes, being kind, she said she didn`t mind. She drew a bath and washed me clean, then kneeling took me by degrees. She held me till I went to sleep, then put me on the 10:15. God you work in wondrous ways. bless this girl for all her days. And when I`m old and tired and grey, I'll think of this day. Equipment doesn't make a tremendous difference in your photography so worry about more important things such as finding somewhere to hide before aliens land in 2012. HAHA okay in all seriousness, good equipment doesn't equal good pictures. A good eye helps much more :) Here's the list of my equipment and their uses (some of them are "DIY-ed") This set of equipment is changing constantly as I figure out what works, and more importantly, what doesn't. _________________ - Billingham 306 bag: The prettiest bag I've seen... for cameras. Don't ask me why but most of the camera bags out there have that mundane, homogeneous, box-like shape. This Billingham is made out of the nicest leather out there. BTW, I have replaced the dividers with Crumpler dividers since they are softer and more "cushiony" - Canon 5D MkI : My main camera used for landscapes and most stuff. The only problem I have with this camera is the pathetic build despite the pro-standard image quality. Really, what on earth was Canon thinking? - Canon 40D: My back-up camera used mainly for portraits and for times when I know the camera would be getting bashed and drenched in inclement weather. The second body is essential when you want to change perspectives quickly and when you the location you are in is rainy/snowy/dusty. - 17-40mm f4L: My lens used most for landscape/conceptual stuff. - 135mm f2L: The portrait lens. Emphasis on "THE". It's the" awesome-est" (but practical) lens there is for portraits - 50mm f1.8: The trusty little lens which is surprisingly sharp. - Manfrotto 190XPRO3 and Arca-Swiss Z1 ballhead: I use this for all my long exposures. Good stability, yet lightweight = Perfect combination - Voigtlander R3a film rangefinder and 40mm f1.4 Nokton: Leica image quality in a cute little body. <3 Used when I don't want to lug all my crap around with friends and for street photography. - 580EX MkII flash: OK, I was an ignorant imbecile claiming flash was not needed in photography. and I WAS WRONG. Flash is essential to control lighting in scenarios when the natural lighting isn't in your favour. The 580 is used as a master flash in wireless flash photography as well. - 430EX flash: Used as a slave in wireless flash photography to create lighting - Lee Flash gels for colour correction and effects (The coloured strips in on the right hand side of the photo) : Used with the flash units for colour effects and when I need to balance light from the flashes with ambient lighting - Translucent case for flash gels: Improvised use of film sleeves haha - Pelican Maglite torchlight: 90 lumens to light the world. Okay, not really the world... but this torch is still extremely bright. Point it in your eyes if you love the idea of being blind. Used to autofocus at night and to find my way around my camera. - Translucent Silicon keyboard protector: Used to protect Ms 5D who apparently has a severe case of hydrophobia. - B+W ND filter (the weird black circular filter): For daytime long exposures when I need a looooong shutter speed - Wireless remote & transceiver: To reduce vibrations when shooting long exposures. And also when I want to be in the frame :) - Lens cloth and lens blower: To clean my lenses (for show only. My lenses are not petty little girls who are afraid of a little grime) - Camera batteries: For eating when hungry while shooting. Just kidding. - Sanyo Enloop rechargable batteries: For the flash units. They're environmentally friendly :) - Small clear plastic bag: For keeping the 430 flash dry ____________ I hoped this list will help you with packing the right things into your camera bag. Just note that I rarely bring all these things when I go shooting since I personally feel that the less you carry, the more fun you actually have. The more fun you have, the better pictures you make. Regards, Edward <3 Ł500 down and animation fail. So... I bought a new camera. A Canon EOS 450D. It's practically the same as my 400D except it has live view. I bought it so I could at last animate with live view when I shoot at uni. I also had to pay ?45 for some leads to go with it so I could run it off a plugged in battery as it will be on constantly from 9-7 every day. I was ?500 down and now without a Milly, but at least I would be able to animate easier and more effeciently. On monday I went to uni, set everything up, got the set all glued in place etc, then plugged in the camera... the software was out of date and couldn't see my camera. I went to the IT department and asked them to please update it. One of them tried to, but had to wait for authorisation. As I forgot my old camera, it meant we could shoot nothing on monday. The next day, that IT guy was sick and we had to explain our situation to someone else. This guy refused to upgrade it. He said he had something which could POSSIBLY be it, but he didn't want to try it in case it messed everything up. He said he would try during easter. We only get the studio until thursday next week, easter is the week after. So whilst being ?500 poorer for no real reason, I used my old camera and animated half-blind again. The day after, we came into the studio to find the computer had killed our entire animation so far. The programme had died as we had so many hidden frames in it (because we had no live view). Now the first 30 seconds of animation, which is only about 600 frames long, is in amoungst 1771 frames and I have to dig out every single correct frame and somehow put it together. I've tried to do it and it's impossible. I've also realised that some parts need to be photoshopped and I have no way of knowing what files are correct and which are not once I've edited everything together and we have no time to reshoot the start of the animation. We now have just monday to thursday to shoot the majority of our animation and reshoot the previous lost parts. We have to have the extra lighting equipment back by 4:30pm on thursday and we have classes we can't miss on monday and tuesday. I think we (and by we, I mean Sachiko and I) are actually properly screwed over this time. If they refuse to give us an extension, we will fail. I have wasted so much money on the animation this time, not only the ?500 but also all the money for animation supplies to make the puppet etc and all of the money spent on the last animation which we ended up scrapping. None of this has been our fault at all, it's all just horrible bad luck. We come into the studio as soon as uni opens and leave when it closes at 7pm, we get 30 seconds shot a day and we don't leave the studio all day, but it looks like we've done basically nothing. :( Oh and you know what else sucks? The trains around here have been broken for about 4/5 weeks and they're not going to be fixed until the end of May. I've seen Matt once, for 23 hours, since they broke and I probably won't see him again for another two weeks. Also, my jaw has become considerably worse, I can now no longer open it enough to clean my teeth properly, fit a forkful of food in my mouth or bite into a sandwich. It also choses to come out of place sideways and at random. This causes me to look like I have tourettes as I jump and yell 'ARGH, FUCK!' without fail, every time it happens. There are boxes of my dad's things -- that I have not been able to go thru until now. It's a combination of trash (my dad was a pack-rat - saved EVERYTHING) and treasures. This is one of the treasures. I've been reading newspaper articles, and old letters that were among the papers -- In the process I've learned a lot about my grandfather Watkins that I never knew...... it seems he was a fascinating man. I wish I had known him. I never knew him because...... he died the first time he saw me, when I was 4 days old...... seriously. The couple on the right (on the camels) are my grandparents. Witching With Herbs III: From Nature To The Cauldron (Part Two) Once you have finished your harvesting, it is time to start working with them to get the most of its medicinal and magical properties. - The first step is to clean the herbs thoroughly of dust, animal hair, insects and all kind of natural debris; don’t leave that work for tomorrow! If you don’t have time to do that the day you have harvested, take all herbs outside the bags and leave them on a table or floor where they won’t be a bother, away from pets and kids, over a mat of newspaper sheets or any other absorbent material. - Once the herbs are clean, decide which herbs will be used fresh and which ones will be set to dry; fresh herbs are better to make smudge sticks, kitchen oils and vinegars for salad dressings, to mince and make frozen cubes of cooking herbs, and so on. All the work done with fresh herbs must be done as soon as possible, so do that work first. - On the other side, dried herbs are the best for teas, tinctures, infused oils, incenses, etc. You can chop the herbs before or after they have dried, that is up to you; I prefer to do it first because the stems are softer to cut. Use trays lined with absorbent paper, or simply leave them on the floor over a mat of paper on an undisturbed, fresh and dark place. Do not dry them in the sun as the essential oils are highly volatile and the plants will lose power if sun dried. Once a day, turn the batch around for an even drying. Don’t discard the stems, as many plants contain more essential oils in them than in leaves or flowers. - Sometimes, specially with wildharvested herbs, you will need to kill any bacteria/bugs living in them by oven drying. Keep your oven at the lowest temperature and leave the oven door slightly open for ventilation. After half an hour at around 50 Celsius degrees, bacteria or bugs will not survive and, though the plant’s power will be a little lower, it will be perfectly safe to ingest. - Keep the roots aside and dry them separately, as the roots usually have the highest amount of water in the plant and need more time to dry than leaves or stems. As with herbs, you can slice/chop the root before drying or not as you prefer; again, I chop it first because most roots are almost impossible to cut when dry. - Depending on your weather, herbs may take from 1 to 4 weeks to dry. Once they are crunchy and soft to the touch, they are ready to be placed in a glass or ceramic jar and labelled. Remember to add the date of harvesting, as you don’t want to use herbs that have been storaged for more than a year – you are not a butterfly collector, so USE what you have harvested! We used recycled and sterilized glass food jars, as amber/cobalt glass jars are really expensive; just keep them in a dark place, away from strong smells and, if possible, away from the kitchen. (In the picture - Canarian Sage, Salvia Canariensis) iRobot Scooba Hacks Shortly after we moved to New Mexico iRobot started making robots that could mop floors. This seemed like a great idea to us since we always seem to have dust blowing in through the windows or just being brought into the house with daily human and pet traffic. After five years of maintaining this mopping device I've learned a few tricks to keep it running with minimal expenses. - You don't need to buy iRobot cleaning fluid. White vinegar works fine. - A drop or two of essential oils (orange, mint, tea tree, geranium, etc) makes for a great clean room smell. - Warm water will make for a smoother running robot - The batteries will be a issue. I'm using a capacitive charger which can charge 1 to 5 batteries at a time. I run the batteries to zero between usage and take them all the way up to full with a low 150mA constant current charge overnight. While I have repacked the batteries with different chemistries (li-ion, ni-cd and nimh) my preference is towards buying pre-assembled 3rd party Ni-CD which seem to be the most robust. - Ebay is a great source for used robots with "dead" batteries that sell for $10 - $30. But don't forget to DISCONNECT from the electricity supply before you complete the final steps. I took the opportunity to clean the backplate. There was a lot of encrusted gunk on the back of the plate, partially blocking the fan vents..I wonder if this contributed to the element's demise? I replaced the oven bulb which had failed (15 watt SES 300 degree - I got a Philips T22 E14 about ?2). Replace the back plate with the 4 screws - you did keep them in a safe place didn't you? I took the opportunity to clean the glass on the oven door too. Wow...now we can actually see the stuff being cooked for the first time in a couple of years! I then checked out the oven by starting at 100 degrees and checking the thermostat went out after a couple of minutes. then 150 degrees...another couple of minutes..then 200 and 300. Seemed ok. real life part 1: oven cleaning ... had to clean the oven using the self-cleaner mechanism. It didn't help the smell any. And as I was standing there I realized I had a 'real life photo in the making'. So I grabbed my camera and clicked away. 2/20.1 I couldn't decide between this picture and the one I picked for my 365 today. I like this one for the light and shadows, but seriously, mopping as a 365 pic? Not so fun!! I spent today scrubbing my old apartment spotless. I also moved some more stuff out that I left there due to laziness, and finished painting the walls that the sun is showing on in this room. I also cleaned the kitchen, bathroom, and my old room. I also... mopped! I'm so tired its not even funny. My back is also in a lot of pain. I think I might break down tomorrow and call a physical therapist. I was attempting to ignore all of the angry crampy feelings my back was giving off all day, but when it started to burn I went and found my referal form, so yay for getting motivated, eh? Utility/Mud Room utility room, ikea cabinets, new hardwood floor. Lots of stogae, easy to keep clean. Rug is also from Ikea. Dry sand with 330 Grit - it looked like hell at this point and I was nervous - but I surrendered to the process. 3. Wet sand with 600 Grit and lysol wipee's. ...4. Switch to 800 with the wipee's 5. Switch to 1000 Grit and instead of lysol wipee's which work great, I sprayed with WD40 and sanded with 1000 Grit. 6. Switch to 2000 Grit and WD40 7. Go over the piece on the 6" bench buffer - Red Rouge 1st. do 2 rounds buffing with the red rouge and a cotton (not sisal) wheel. 8. Switch to the blue rouge for the finish coat using a different wheel. 9. Wipe down good with clean cloth rags 10. Use Mothers aluminum polish & polish piece 11. apply 2 coats Rust-Oleum crystal clear enamel & buff it out. 1st Polishing Attempt - Fail/Do Over Here's a shot of the rear hub after polishing. After wet sanding for about 15-20 minutes, I used the black emery on the spiral sewn wheel to cut. Then polished with the white rouge bar on a loose spun cotton wheel, then finally buffed out on a clean, very soft buffing wheel. I'm not getting the results I want right now. I feel like I'm halfway to the mirror finish. There's still alot of imperfections in the metal. Afternoon Tea For Papa-Allan Made this today, its called a "tuscan apple cake".. though I'm not entirely sure why its 'tuscan'. Recpe was from a newspaper, can you believe it, though I have slightly modified it to suit my own likings. As always. It is soft, moist, and the house fills with the most amazing smells as it bakes. And it tastes beautiful slightly warmed from the oven, or cold a day later. Either way, its divine!!! ************************************************************************************** 3 cups sliced apples ( usually about 5 medium apples) 5 TBSP unrefined, or brown. sugar 5 Tsp. ground cinnamon 1/2 Tsp ground nutmeg or allspice 4 eggs 2 cups sugar 1/2 cup fruity olive oil (or light extra virgin olive oil - it seems to be ok) 1/2 cup orange juice (freshly squeezed - strain through tea strainer) 3 cups self raising flour 1 Tsp. vanilla essence Mix sliced apples, 5 TBSP sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg in a bowl and leave for at least 1/2 hour. Coat the squirrel pieces. In a Dutch oven, combine bacon and butter over medium heat until butter melts. Add squirrel and brown. Add water, tomatoes, onion and brown sugar and bring to boil. I sprayed this stuff on both sides of the filter and let sit for 10 minutes, then rinsed the filter until the water ran clear(took about 1 1/2 minutes) Then I allowed the filter to dry before I placed the filter back in the a/c unit. I use one of those throw away filters in the a/c unit until this thingy here dries up. I always try to clean or check my a/c filter once a month. It is a ritual performed by Hindus before/on any major occasion like marriage, house warming ceremony etc. It can also be performed on any day for any reason.It is believed the ceremony originated in Bengal as Satya Pir ritual performed by all communities (Hindu, Muslim and buddhists) and later in 1800s morphed into Satyanarayan puja.[1],[2],[3] The Satyanarayana Puja is usually done on the Purnima day of every month (the day of the full moon) or a Sankranti. It is also done on special occasions and during times of achievements as an offering of gratitude to the Lord. I noticed he has this dreadful coughing fit about once a day nearly every day for the last week. I thought it was something caught in his throat, but now I think its flem irritating his lungs. At one point it looked like he had blood in his urine, but now it's a clear yellow again. I'm trying to work with Charlie. He's done this before about 4 years ago, and it was stray cats walking through my yard at 4am that would set him off to go and spray everywhere in the house. I found simply by locking him in the laundry at night, he felt safe and stopped spraying. This time it's more difficult. He sprays anytime, and he holds his wee to spray, so I have to put him in the kitty litter and keep putting him in till he wees, so he has less to spray with. I have to keep an eye on him, and lock him in my room if I go out. I also am keeping Midnight in to tame him, because it's really cold at night now, and it was hard to get him in at night. Charlie is struggling to share the space with Midnight. When I'm not looking he nips Midnight pretty hard. This problem really gets me down. I don't want him like this. Yet I can't let him go to surrender him. I can't just leave him outside, because I don't want him spraying everywhere on my verandah etc. and I don't want any harm to come to him from spraying in other peoples yards. I will endeavour to keep trying. Some days Charlie does settle and purrs, some days he's uptight and won't purr, and tries to sneakily outsmart me and spray when I'm not looking. I've put him in the bathroom overnight sometimes, because he started to spray in my room, before I woke, and I think he heard the possums on the roof and it triggers him now. But I'm not sure. He showed signs of anxiety about a week before the spraying started. Beautiful, beautiful time of the year here. The exposure here is a little dark, but I decided to keep it that way because I thought the falls itself deserved all the attention. It's a gorgeous waterfall, and bigger than it looks here. The observation deck is close enough to it to warrant a wide-angle lens, but now I wish I had gotten a little closer to those cascades of water there at the top left. Lemon-scented leaves This little plant has grown opportunistically in our garden (Oxfordshire, UK). It doesn't look or smell like much, but its leaves when rubbed give off a powerful, almost artificial lemon smell: like lemon Smints or cleaning fluid. The internet keeps saying "lemon mint" or "lemon bee balm" (monarda citriorda) but I don't know. I think I'm being influenced by (a) the smell and (b) the fact that it's growing near our existing mint pots. The leaf shape and arrangement doesn't look like UK lemon mint at all. No flowers but it's only appeared this summer.
