William, preening, always preening, snow, sleet, blizzard. Here's a story from Lori: I shoveled the driveway. I needed the car to go to the pond so i dropped the boy at work. I couldn't see out of the windshield, the wipers weren't that much help but he told me it was fine, it was clearing up, blah, blah, blah. I should have listened to my own brain and gotten back out and taken the 46 seconds to clear the ice but i listened to his urgency, i don't want to be late, you can see fine. I got almost there and plowed straight into a snow bank in the middle of the road. Now, why was there a snow bank in the middle of the road? No matter. I did not see it. Why did i not see it? (i can be just slightly amused now, but believe you me, it wasn't funny). I turned to the boy and said, "You'd best start walking, because we are screwed." He muttered he should have driven. Yes, i won't argue with that. So i worked on my problem, but the front tires were off the flippin ground and going nowhere. A guy with a truck and a shovel came to help. "You're an angel!" i cried. We got nowhere. The guy in the plow finally came by and the two of them pushed me out backwards. Any normal person, shaken up, would have gone home. I continued on to the pond. Crazy Crazy Crazy. It was crazy there too. The sleet was coming down hard and fast and some goose jumped up and bit my hand, as i was handing out the gruel (they won't eat out of containers. I have to put the slop in my hand and hope they get it in their bills. The fall off goes to the ducks and geese below. Everyone wins. Cept my hands. I couldn't find my gruel gloves so did it without. Mistake. When i fell on the ice 2 days ago and split the heel of my hand open, i noticed it was infected last night. So i pulled open the skin (eeww) flap and soaked it. I need a vacation. Someplace warm. I got home and Doodle had peed all over the carpet.

The blues and grays of a winter afternoon...and the occasional yellow chair? This is the code of winter parking in Chicago - if you dig it out, you may reserve it using whatever implements you have at hand. Chairs are most popular, but this was one of my favorites - the Pack 'n' Play. I can only hope that the baby was in it for easy access while the spot was being shoveled out around it.

PS. If you move the chairs and park in a spot that's not yours, well, you know what's at risk. Air let out of your tires, at best. Slashed tires and broken windshields aren't unheard of, and heaven forbid that the shoveler you've offended has a cousin who owns a tow truck!

no matter what everybody says, editing is hard work. have been sitting in front of my mac for hours and just trying to make every shot that i've taken count through post-processing. its not done but its slowly getting there.

i won't say i'm complaining abt my work. in fact, i think i have one of the best jobs in the world. i have great mentors and a great boss and many friends who share my passion. i love the flexibility of the hours and most of all i love what i shoot. as i review through each shot of any wedding i am a participant of, i can feel their emotions and joys all over again and that rates highly on my job satisfaction list heh.

good news is i'll take a break from all the staring at the screen this weekend as i have a friend coming in to visit (: did i mention i love the flexibility already? ;)

The Monongahela Incline

This funicular railroad was opened to the public on May 28, 1870. The word funicular derives from the Latin funiculus, meaning thin rope. It’s a system of transport in which cables are attached to the vehicle, which then moves it up and down a steep slope on rails.

The Monongahela Incline carried passengers and freight up Mount Washington, originally known as Coal Hill. Most of the coal that fueled the early development of Pittsburgh came from here, and the primitive hoists they used were precursors to the more elaborate system that became the transit of the era.

As industry grew in Pittsburgh, so did the demand for labor. A good portion of this labor was found in immigrants from Europe. However, most industry took the flat land, leaving only the steep hillsides for housing. As public transit was a rarity then, the workers had to live within walking distance. Mount Washington was close, with lots of land for development, but there was a lack of good roads. German immigrants who settled there tired of the steep stairways and paths. They recalled the Steilbahns of their fatherland, and proposed to have them constructed here.

The Monongahela Incline was the first in 1870, the Duquesne in 1877, and in the next 18 years at least 17 of these funicular railways were built in the Pittsburgh area. Many of these inclines carried horses and wagons as well as foot passengers. The rates for passengers varied from one cent to five cents, with discounts given to regular commuters.

Currently, there are only two inclines left in Pittsburgh; the Duquesne and the Monongahela. The last one closed was the Castle Shannon, in 1964. The inclines today are still used; however half of the passengers are there purely for the ride and the spectacular view it provides.

Log Boom Pier

After Ella's birthday party, I was on my way home when I saw a cool looking pier and a bunch of pilings extending out into Lake Washington in Kenmore. I had driven past it several times, and as it was about sunset, I decided to finally stop in. Glad I did, because it was a great place to shoot, and I plan to go back often. Here's my first offering from this place, which is called Log Boom Park. Tomorrow I'll show you why it is called Log Boom with one of my all time favorite shots.

I composed the shot like this to get the pier and also to try to get the streaking clouds to the right. I had a straight shot of the pier that I liked as well, but unfortunately it was blown out, so I tossed it. Good excuse to go back though. :)

Logging - SEVEN Loads

This Logging Truck is pulling SEVEN loads of logs out of the Thompson River drainage in Western Montana.

In the early '70s Claridge Trucking had the task of haulling Anaconda's logs from up to 100 miles away to the rail head at Thompson Falls. They were able to successfully haul multiple loads down the private Anaconda Logging road to the landing.

This video was provided by Michelle Veach Ferrel, grand daughter of Floyd Veach who was the dirver of this truck. Hauling seven loads earned him recognition in the Guiness Book of World Records.

During this time it was not unusual to see multiple loads on this road. 3, 4, or 5 loads were common. Floyd Veach pioneered hauling SEVEN loads. He did this more than once.

I started with a worn-out Innova studded tire for the shoulder pads. It just wasn't studly enough, so I picked up some punk-rawk-style studs from Extreme Noise and started punching holes.

So we've had this killer cold snap. And yesterday a columnist in the Vancouver Sun (no anti-pun intended) wrote in defence of all wimpy weather whiners. Shelley Fralic said:

"If you live here - either by fortune of birth or by intelligent design - it's because it doesn't snow.... because you can golf in December."

Oh. Really. Is that what you think, Shelley? Of course you're entitled. You're a columnist. I get it. But why do you insist on framing your silly opinions as fact?

I AM here by birth, AND by "intelligent design," having returned to the Island as an adult after starting here and growing up elsewhere. And guess what, Shelley? Neither of those things had anything to do with snow (or, for fuck's sake, golf).

My parents moved here because my father had a job, and because the Island reminded him of Ireland. And I moved here to be with Mike. So... FRO Shelley Fralic.

She goes on to make many more inane remarks (again... all framed as fact). For example:

"We don't know from snow tires or chains." (Oh yeah, bitch? Let me introduce you to a tractor with chains. Which can be relied on when your regular four wheel drive pickup, also with chains, can't make it up the hill. I learned to drive on that tractor, so. FRO.)

"We don't know how to drive in snow because we never learned." (Oh yeah? So I guess I was hallucinating those crazy-fun Friday nights when my high school boyfriend and I would spend countless hours spinning donuts and doing all kinds of snow stunts in an otherwise deserted small-town downtown core... all in the name of improving our snow handling skills, which were already very well developed. Oh, and I guess I never made those countless winter blizzard trips through the Rogers Pass and along the Hope Princeton Highway back in the day, and I certainly never drove between Cranbrook and Kimberley on solid ice in the name of covering school board meetings.)

Um... I could go on. The point, of course, being that dumbass commentators would be better off not wielding their inane generalities quite so aggressively. Also... it's never wise to wield these things in the second person. Few things irk me more than some commentator - who's never met me and knows zero about me - telling me who am I and what I think and why.

Back here on my personal ranch, I'll admit I've had my complaints about the cold... but only insofar as it has devastated my garden. It's littered with corpses - fallen palms, broken brown things, succulents turned to cold mashed spinach. And yeah, there is some heartbreak there.

But... unlike Shelley Fralic... I'm a hardy perennial. And I have a pretty good, positive attitude where death's concerned. It's not the end of the world, just part of the natural order of things. So... instead of mourning my losses, I'm looking forward to rejigging and replanting and readjusting... as nature dictates.

I'm also just bursting with pride to see how many of my "children" came through the storms intact. Surprise surprise, all the native plants are doing fine fine fine.

Those who died were weak and probably shouldn't have been here anyway. And I have new respect and reverence for the survivors.

So yeah... the garden in 2009 will be stronger and better than ever.

52 Weeks: Week 14 (Year 2)

Self Portrait Challenge: Tiny Words

This has been Hell Week for me. I had to force myself to get my camera and take photos today so I could post to my 52 Week group. I have been sick with the flu since Wednesday and it is terrible!! My head felt like it was squeezed between a vice for over 24 hours. I was taking extra strength Tylenol every 3 hours with no relief so I slept as much as I could to deal with the pain. After 24 hours, the intensity of the headache let up but I still do not feel good. I am tired and achy and I have an annoying cough. I'm either shivering with chills or overheating and sweating profusely. My head feels dizzy today and most of you know how much I hate this sensation as this is my biggest complaint with Lyme Disease.

Since my flu started on Wednesday morning, I am starting to wonder if I am experiencing the "herx" reaction from starting on antibiotics again. It is not unusual for people with a chronic case of Lyme Disease to suffer from Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction (herx) which is the body’s response to the bacterial lipoproteins (BLPs) produced by the dying borrelia during the course of taking antibiotics. It's repulsive to think that my blood and brain are being polluted by dead parasites!

So that is why I chose the word "hostage" for my SPC group this week. I feel as though my body is being held hostage by Lyme Disease. I HATE this disease and the worst part is that so many people, including doctors, do not understand the disease. I am exhausted and my knees hurt and I am too young to feel this old. I can understand how people with chronic disease can get depressed because it just wears away at your spirit.

9/16 - Day 149 of Year 29; Missed my framing

I spent the morning cleaning and organizing the mess that was my apartment.

Today was spent on factory tours. We went to the silver casting facility and watched as they take wax mold “tree” of jewelry carvings and set it in plaster and replace the wax with sterling silver. Voila, jewelry. Also had meeting with other jewelry manufacturers and discussed future lines. Most of the meeting was in Thai, so I just smiled and nodded when appropriate. When Kit and I were talking in English I said something in Spanish, not sure what, and the woman we were meeting with (who spoke English and Thai) turned to me and asked if I speak Spanish. I laughingly said “un pequeno,” and she suddenly started speaking in Spanish. My face turned red. “MUY, MUY pequeno.”

After meetings, went to trade show. Horrible traffic on the way home. HORRIBLE. I was planning on going out when I got home, but I was so tired, and car sick, I just crashed and called it a day.

Why I love Tilex...

You might assume after the picture from yesterday that the reason I love Tilex is because it saved my bathroom from the utter destruction that was the sink-tastrophy in the making. However, the sink did not overflow to wreck my bathroom and the nice maintenance person did a good job cleaning up after themselves. My sink appears to be back to normal.

Washing out my backpack did very little good. I only had non-chlorine bleach. So in a last ditch effort to try to save my backpack, I sprayed Tilex into the bag onto the many mold spots. As you can see from the photograph - I have mostly won my battle with mold.

if you have never made pork sausage, or any other type, this series of photos will give you a little idea of what you might be in for. this being the start of the adventure, we needed several pounds of meat (in this case pork from our freezer) Casings (which are another pork product or as we know them cleaned lower intestines) some fats from said critter (we used bacon:-) and of course some time to grind it up and patience to stuff the sausage into the casings. from there, the finished product simply needs to be enjoyed (but with pork we usually recommend cooking it first). ANZAC Day

I saw a kid marchin’ with medals on his chest.
He marched alongside Diggers marching six abreast.
He knew that it was ANZAC Day - he walked along with pride.
He did his best to keep in step with the Diggers by his side.

And when the march was over the kid was rather tired.
A Digger said “Whose medals, son?” to which the kid replied:
“They belong to daddy, but he did not come back.
He died up in New Guinea on a lonely jungle track”.

The kid looked rather sad then and a tear came to his eye.
The Digger said “Don’t cry my son and I will tell you why.
Your daddy marched with us today - all the blooming way.
We Diggers know that he was there - it’s like that on ANZAC Day”.

The kid looked rather puzzled and didn’t understand,
But the Digger went on talking and started to wave his hand.
“For this great land we live in, there’s a price we have to pay
For we all love fun and merriment in this country where we live.
The price was that some soldier his precious life must give.

For you to go to school my lad and worship God at will,
Someone had to pay the price so the Diggers paid the bill.

i don't think i could appear pretty in a picture to save my life.

lisa came back from australia today! and although i haven't seen her, it sure is good to know that she's just a short ride away on the train. i had a good, but too busy, day at school today. i taught the special education class...there is a little boy named daisuke in that class and he brightens my day every time i go to his school. for as many learning disabilites that he has, he is soooo good at english. he told me he was going to go to shizuoka by himself on the train this weekend. i told him that i didn't think him going alone was a good idea. so then he asked me on a date. it was the cutest thing ever.

i've spent most of my night trying to get christmas packages and birthday presents ready to send to america. both taylor and jim have birthdays this month, as does my sister-in-law becky and my nephew kyle. the cost of shipping even the smallest package home from japan is outrageous. but that's the price i pay for living so far away.

but far away is my home now. and at this point, i wouldn't have it any other way.

i'm tired. i think it's time to go to bed.
