William, preening, always preening, snow, sleet, blizzard. Here's a story from Lori: I shoveled the driveway. I needed the car to go to the pond so i dropped the boy at work. I couldn't see out of the windshield, the wipers weren't that much help but he told me it was fine, it was clearing up, blah, blah, blah. I should have listened to my own brain and gotten back out and taken the 46 seconds to clear the ice but i listened to his urgency, i don't want to be late, you can see fine. I got almost there and plowed straight into a snow bank in the middle of the road. Now, why was there a snow bank in the middle of the road? No matter. I did not see it. Why did i not see it? (i can be just slightly amused now, but believe you me, it wasn't funny). I turned to the boy and said, "You'd best start walking, because we are screwed." He muttered he should have driven. Yes, i won't argue with that. So i worked on my problem, but the front tires were off the flippin ground and going nowhere. A guy with a truck and a shovel came to help. "You're an angel!" i cried. We got nowhere. The guy in the plow finally came by and the two of them pushed me out backwards. Any normal person, shaken up, would have gone home. I continued on to the pond. Crazy Crazy Crazy. It was crazy there too. The sleet was coming down hard and fast and some goose jumped up and bit my hand, as i was handing out the gruel (they won't eat out of containers. I have to put the slop in my hand and hope they get it in their bills. The fall off goes to the ducks and geese below. Everyone wins. Cept my hands. I couldn't find my gruel gloves so did it without. Mistake. When i fell on the ice 2 days ago and split the heel of my hand open, i noticed it was infected last night. So i pulled open the skin (eeww) flap and soaked it. I need a vacation. Someplace warm. I got home and Doodle had peed all over the carpet.

The blues and grays of a winter afternoon...and the occasional yellow chair? This is the code of winter parking in Chicago - if you dig it out, you may reserve it using whatever implements you have at hand. Chairs are most popular, but this was one of my favorites - the Pack 'n' Play. I can only hope that the baby was in it for easy access while the spot was being shoveled out around it.

PS. If you move the chairs and park in a spot that's not yours, well, you know what's at risk. Air let out of your tires, at best. Slashed tires and broken windshields aren't unheard of, and heaven forbid that the shoveler you've offended has a cousin who owns a tow truck!
