Mt Currie Looking very Alps like as someone said when they told me to go get my camera... The Monument One of the best things about living in Pemberton is Mt. Currie. It's oneof the biggest mountain in this area. There are very few places from the town, up the Meadows, or over towards the New Site, that it cannot be seen. It dominates the southern horizon. The north face seems to drop straight into the valley from the peak. It's easily seen from much of Whistler even though it's some twenty kilometers distant. Just look north. It's aspect changes as the light changes. It is beautiful. It is mesmerizing. Mt. Currie is 2,596 meters or 8,517 feet high. It rises 2,300 meters or 7,546 feet above its base. What's rather amazing is that Mt. Everest, while it is 8.848 meters or 29,029 feet high and consequently a whole lot taller, rises only 3,500 meters or 11,483 feet. Thus Mt. Currie's rise is over two thirds that of Mt. Everest! The relief, the difference in height between the bottom and top, of the Coastal Mountain's is among the highest in the world. John Currie's name first appears on Lillooet tax rolls with a Pemberton address in 1885. He held 960 acres with partners Dugland McDonald and Owens Williams on which they pastured hogs, cattle and horses. In 1888 he and McDonald applied for survey of District Lots 164 and 165, an area that included the old high school site and extended south of the railway tracks. In 1890 a surveyor, William Allan, described the pre-emptors' holdings as "well improved, with splendid buildings." Pre-empting was how land was acquired; it meant driving corner posts, or staking, around the acreage allowed, and then recording the pre-emption with a magistrate. The pre-emptor had to live on and improve it, have it surveyed, and eventually pay for it at the staggering rate of $1 an acre. He then received a Crown Grant. The land at the foot of Mt. Currie was some of the first privately held land on the mainland, desirable because it was on the original Gold Rush trail. During the gold rush days tomatoes were selling for as much as seventy five cents and cucumbers for a dollar. In 1859 one settler cleared over 240 pounds sterling an acres growing potatoes. Farmers were making money. Then the Cariboo Road up the Fraser was completed in 1863 and the exodus from Pemberton began. By 1874 only a few settlers remained. There would be a second wave and John Currie would be in it. In 1851, at the tender young age of 17, John Currie emigrated from Scotland. His family settled in Quebec but John ran away and headed for the California gold-fields. He later journeyed to the Cariboo where he might have met McDonald, his partner in Pemberton. While returning south Currie passed through Clinton where smallpox was laying waste to the town and continued on towards Lillooet. He farmed between Ashcroft and Lilloet, where he pre-empted land, for a number of years after 1868 He moved to Pemberton where his family finally found him, some forty years after he left home. In 1893 his step-mother Janet Currie arrived in Pemberton with her son Ronald Currie and daughter Annie McIntosh. Janet didn't think much of Pemberton and quickly moved on to Lillooet. Around 1895 another sister came to live with John, bringing three daughters with her. Ronald later returned and operated the Halfway House on the Portage and ran a stagecoach service until 1913. In 1895 the federal government established a post office on John's farm to serve the settlers in the Valley and over the Pemberton Portage. Currie was the postmaster handling the mail and operating a store in a little log building on his farm. The Curries had three children, two sons and a daughter. The trail from Squamish led travelers right past the Currie's door. John would often welcome them and invite them to spend the night. The hardwood floors in the cabin were made from a steamer abaandoned on Lillooet Lake. Currie's grazing land stretched down to the Green River and over to the mountains on the west side of the Valley. By 1891 he had one hundred cattle and six horses. In 1897, after his herd had grown considerably he decided to drive them over the trail to the Howe Sound, intending no doubt to send them by ship to Vancouver from there. He hired dozens of men from the Indian Reserve to help with the drive, but the cattle weren't used to being herded and refused to stay on the trail. Currie tried fencing in sections of the path but the animals again refused to be driven. Currie reluctantly gave up but because he had not stored sufficient hay, because he wasn't expecting to have any cattle over the winter, few of his herd survived the hard winter of 1898. In 1901 John resigned as Pemberton Meadows postmaster and not much later Leonard Neill took over the farm. Currie moved away and in 1910 died and was buried in Vancouver. I don't know what the stone above his grave looks like, but just south of the l Yellow Heritage Jazz House of Goa, India Campal is an area in Panjim that has beautiful old houses built in a mix of Portuguese and Goan style of architecture of trailing long verandahs, tiled roofs of ochre red set on wooden beams and most of them are huge houses built by the then elite of the Goa society. This image of the long verandah is of a heritage house owned by the Gonsalves family is more popularly know as the "House of Jazz" in India as it houses shows and events of music. The first shows were around 2001. This verandah has been a venue for many a musical soirees and performances over the last 8-9 years and all of them done solely to promote music and culture without any monetary gains. Infact it has been a passage of musical passion as the family has incurred money out of its own pockets to keep the show going. Hats off to such great people. Yes they do exist ! Yellow walls are in profuse abundance in Panjim in Goa. The brightly colored walls of yellow, indigo blue, purple, greens and reds can be seen all over Goa. Santa Reed Today I bought a super cheap Aiptek 720P HD video camera. Last year, when I hooked my old camcorder to my HDTV I was appalled by the lack of quality. So, I bought one of these little guys and it's not too bad. It can also take 8 megapixel photos as well. This is one I took and ran it through my typical Tri-X works in Photoshop. Not super quality, but not too bad either. I think it'll be fun playing with this. My thoughts on Nikon R1C1 A couple of months ago I played around with Nikon's macro flash system R1C1. These are some of my findings. To summarize, here are some pros and cons: + The SB-R200 units are extremely accurate and has much better individual precision in the output compared to all other iTTL units I've tried (SB-400, SB-600,SB-800 ). + It's easy to set the "contribution ratio" between the flash units with impressive precision. + Both flash- and control units are lightweight and reasonably small - The supplied mounting system is a major disappointment. Flimsy and obtrusive. - No readily available alternative mounting system – why no hotshoe-compatible mount or 1/4" thread on the SB-R200 units? Stupid! - CR123A batteries. No batteries or chargers included. You can find rechargeable CR123A batteries but the manual says nothing about compatibility with these and the ones Nikon suggests you use are disposable and environmentally UNFRIENDLY Lithium batteries. _________________________ The SB-R1C1 consists of two SB-R200 wireless flash units, one SU-800 control unit and a bunch of accessories. There is another similar kit called SB-R1 without the control unit. Cameras with built in wireless flash support doesn't need the control unit but can use the built in flash to control the wireless units instead. However the SU-800 offers a nice interface that is considerably quicker to work with than having to dig into the camera menus (at least on my Fujifilm S5pro body). Precision and Metering The fact that you can fire a SB-R200 straight into the lens at short distance and get a decently exposed view of the flash bulb should tell you something about the low output precision of these units. For macro work it is a great feature to be able to position the flash(es) a couple of centimeters from the subject and still get proper exposures. The metering with the SB-R200 units also seem "smarter" than with other units since it doesn't make the strange assumptions in the way other iTTL-units I've experience with do. For instance – if you use SB-400 with Sigma 150mm it works fine in its original working range. However if you add a diopter – I like to use Raynox DCR-150 with this lens, the metering goes haywire. I suspect this is because the flash/camera uses the focus distance information provided by the lens to make presumptions about the exposure rather than using the actual TTL-information alone. At least this would explain why it overexposes about three stops if you shoot with the lens focused at infinity (which with the DCR-150 means a working distance of about 30cm). Another reason I suspect it is the focus distance info provided by the lens that fools the metering is that things work great with manual lenses (these do not provide this data). Anyway – you get nothing of this kind with the SB-R200 units – they expose perfectly whatever strange contraption the macro photographer has put on his/her camera. I was also impressed by how intelligent the CLS system actually is. For instance – if you set the ratio between the units to 2:1 it does not merely set the output to 2:1 – instead it sets the output so that the units contribute to the exposure by this ratio, which of course is way more useful! To do this it has to meter for each unit (or to be more precise: each group) separately and hence you'll get two pre-flashes before the actual exposure (which is simultaneous). Mounting system SB-R1 and SB-R1C1 comes with a ring-shaped plastic adapter that attaches via an another adapter to the filter thread of the lens. It comes with several adapters for different thread sizes and these are the only parts of this system that are not made of plastic. The plastic ring adapter attaches to the knurled edge of the metal adapter with four small, plastic springloaded "pegs" that protrudes inwards. It shouldn't take long to wear these plastic pegs down to "unusableness" against the knurled metal, and it certainly doesnt feel very secure. The flash units fits into the ring anywhere around its perimeter. Once attached to the ring you can easily slide the units around the ring by pushing a couple of springloaded buttons at the base of the flash mount. Unfortunately the fit between the flash units and the ring is not tight and when you move the setup around they wobble in their mounts making the setup feel quite vulnerable. One can only hope that it feels worse than it is and you'll probably get used to this after a while. In any case it's very hard to believe you need to pay $1000 for something this flimsy! Besides being flimsy it's very far from low profile. The ring adds a lot of girth to the end of the lens that makes it impossible to get nice low angles close to the ground at high magnifications. Also – the front end of my lenses takes a fair bit abuse when I'm out shooting. I push it against the ground, drag it along rock surfaces trying to pan along with fast critters and so Wuppertal-Elberfeld: houses in the Sophienstraße For this series I used one of Nikon's best lenses ever, the 2.8/80mm Nikkor which was designed for the F3AF camera from 1983. Since Nikon has done a good job in terms of compatibility the lens works perfectly on a F4 camera too; autofocus operation is fast and quiet (due to the built-in focusing motor of the lens). The street scene is typical for the city of Wuppertal and features 19th century houses, part of them in neo-renaissance style, part in the regional style with schist-covered walls and green window shutters. [10-27-2011] - In Tow Camera: holga 120N Film: Ilford Delta 400 Location: Seattle Central Library - Seattle, Washington I have a habit of shooting things with my Holga on bulb mode for an undisclosed amount of time. Sometimes handheld and other times on a tripod. Results as you might have guessed vary greatly. Often times I meter these shots but the exposures often require lengths under 1 second, which are simply impossible to measure correctly on a Holga. As such I tend to vastly over expose my images much more than I'd like to admit. It dawned on me today that a simple work around might be to simply use slower film speeds. This would allow for a greater number of exposures requiring shutter speeds of a second or longer, which are much easier to measure with a stopwatch and a cable release. How I never thought of this before is beyond me. Speed Graphic Press Camera Speed Graphic press camera 1940s with Voigtländer Lens and Hugo Meyer coupled rangefinder. This Model Camera was used mostly by Professional Reporters and Photographers and I can only imagine the Photographs that were taken with this Camera.
