We went to Margate in mid April for the opening of the new Turner Contemporary Art Gallery. It was, and remains, the hottest day of the year so far which meant there were many woman woman to snap. This young lady and her boyfriend were walking the promenade looking at all the restaurants and their menus trying to decide where they were going to eat. I think they decided to move on down the street but not before I got a few good shots of her.
The Burghers of Margate obviously got a good price on a job lot of 'Little Bo Peep' mannequins made of sea shells as they were everywhere around the town.
I thought the pair of them were well worth a snap.

Entitled: Chinese Aviatrix Receives Gift Of New Plane From Colonel Roscoe Turner, Washington, D.C. [1939] Harris & Ewing [RESTORED] I did very little correction to this digitize image found in the US Library of Congress under Reproduction Number LC-DIG-hec-26410. The original glass plate negative from 1939 was assumed to be 4 x 5 inch standard.

Hilda Yen, (1905-1970) came from a family of well to do and influential Chinese. Her father studied medicine at Yale and her uncle was a Chinese ambassador to the United States. She herself attended Smith College, and was a graduate of Yale in China. For a woman to have gone to college in those days, much less a Chinese woman, was already astounding. But not one to sit on her laurels, she also learned to fly airplanes. One has to remember that flying in the 1930's wasn't like aviation in the present day. There were no computers, very little in terms of cockpit aids, and pilots flew quite literally by the seat of their pants. It was a skill that few could attain and Yen was spoken of in the same breath with the likes of her contemporary, Amelia Earhart. She took her flying skill to China to instruct others on how to fly. She returned to the US to barnstorm and drum up charity aid for China, which at the time was already at war with Japan since 1937. In the picture above, she accepts a gift of an airplane, on behalf of the "Friends Of New China," from an American military officer, Colonel Roscoe Turner. Unfortunately, this plane almost killed her one month later, when she crashed while attempting to take off from a field near Montgomery, Alabama. Upon her recovery, she nonetheless continued to campaign and lobby on behalf of China until the end of the war.

Day 19 of Gratitude
My Brother

This is my little brother. He has been taller than me since he was 12 years old. For most of his life he's had some sort of fro-ish hairstyle going on so he has been taller since about 8 but I don't like to count that. Although we are siblings and he is going into his final year of high school I have unfortunately only seen him for about 16 months of his life. I know he's getting all grown up but to me he is still my baby brother.

I remember taking him to the park one day when we were younger. He wasn't even in school yet. He really liked the slide so that's all we ever did. Up to the top, down to the bottom, and repeat until you heard mom call for you. On this particular day we got to the top of the slide and a kid started sneezing. I didn't pay any attention to it. As we went down the slide I remember hearing him say "Hey! You can't go down there!" I ignored the boy, I was ten and it was a slide. Why wouldn't I be allowed to? When we got back to the top of the slide the boy started sneezing again. He stepped in front of us and wouldn't let us go down the slide. He said he was allergic and we needed to leave. We had to leave? If you're allergic don't you leave the park? He continued on with his sneezing and finally said "I'm allergic to black people *achoo achoo* get out of here! *achoo achoo*" I didn't know what to do. I remember going down the slide one last time, not sure how we got past him, and then as we left he sneezed loudly over and over again from the top of the slide.

This was my first experience with racism. Ten years old. I think the boy was the same age. Breaks my heart to think that this reaction was probably just a mirror of what he had seen people in his life do. I've always been strangely protective of my brother since then. As protective as can be from roughly 1,000 km away. I have always cared and worried about him. It's been hard watching him grow up from so far away. Seeing him once a year. Things change so fast. He is an amazing guy. So smart. He is going to be able to do anything he puts his mind to. I know families say that about each other all the time but it's not always true. I look forward to seeing where life takes him or, more likely, where he takes life.

I am so happy he is a part of my life and if he doesn't kill me for writing any of this, I'll be happy to still be a part of his too.

I am so spoilt to live so close to so many beautiful mountains. Here I am chilling on one, while another is reflected in my sunglasses -> you'll just have to look closely.

Went for a quick hike on the mountain and spent some time strolling along the trail. The weather was really strange and kept changing. But the mountain smelt fresh and wonderful!

Amy and I were both hoping to find some things for the baby. Unfortunately everything was to gender specific for our tastes. Perhaps if we would have gone after the ultrasound we would have been a little more willing to pick something up, but as it was we only choose this because we couldn't resist it.
