Cincinnati Art Museum

Cincinnati Art Museum

Joos van Cleve. Madonna and Child

Who painted what when? To many, that recalls what turned them off art history. I call it an invitation to see. Sometimes, too, it has the appeal of a good mystery.

A passion for art

A journalism professor from Florida A&M had turned to Renaissance Europe for the secrets of Kabala. In a painting in Cincinnati, he may have discovered as well a story of missionaries, the conquest of the New World, botanical scrutiny, and belief.

This may well sound like outtakes from a certain movie, but it does not require murder, self-flagellation, or even lame dialogue. An attribution simply means asking if the artist at hand would have or could have done the job. As I have described for a controversial attribution to Jan Vermeer, an answer hinges on the totality of a painting's subject, style, and technique, which is why art takes words. These in turn direct one to historical documents, close technical examination, and what one can see with the naked eye. And this time, a work's history extends to everything from biology to the history of scientific discovery and to cultural anthropology.

In Joos van Cleve's Madonna and Child, which dates from before 1535, the infant Jesus reaches for his mother and for three cherries—the number associated with the Trinity and the fruit with paradise. His affection for Mary and her association with salvation already has doctrinal implications. In the process, the child seems to flee two flowers in his mother's right hand. To a believer, he has every reason to fear.

A carnation's nasty thorns and red flowers had made it a symbol of the Passion. When travelers with Hernando Cortes, the Spanish conqueror of Mexico, found a relative with deeper reds and spinier petals, they could hardly resist naming it a passion flower. In the painting, the miraculous new flower tops the older one. They could be growing out of the same stem—if a stem could somehow start over after a burst of pink.

However, Michael E. Abrams has a problem with this picture. Word of the discovery did not reach Europe for decades, starting with a physician around 1570 and drawings by Jesuits in 1608. Prints of Passiflora incarnata circulated more widely in Europe only later still. He cites a remarkable series, documenting biodiversity in Virginia and issued in London.

Could Joos have somehow had an inside track, both to dozens of then unfamiliar species and to an apparent revelation. Could the attribution to Joos instead have a serious flaw? Abrams wrote the Cincinnati Institute of Fine Arts to ask. Although I can hardly claim to have played a role beyond offering another lay opinion, he also got in touch with me—as has the Tallahassee Democrat.

The economy of vision

Andy Haslit, the curator, insists on the attribution. He can trace the painting, which entered the collection in 1981, only as far back as 1913. However, he can rely on agreement among other art historians. I hate to judge a work of art in reproduction, but I reached same conclusion.

Joos, formerly known as Master of the Death of the Virgin, takes his name from Cleves, on the lower Rhine. He moved to Antwerp around 1510. There, under the influence of Quentin Massys and Jan Gossart, he furthered a style known now as Flemish Mannerism. One can see it in the painting's acrid colors, heavy shadows, and hard finish.

At the same time, Mannerism often revisits the past, Joos stood as a classicist. He looked to the early Renaissance, as in a close copy after Jan van Eyck. He also introduces Italian models to Northern Europe, much as Hans Memling had in his portraits many years before. In copying van Eyck's Madonna in a Church, he beefs up her proportions, and the Madonna in Cincinnati has the same weighty folds of drapery and rounded faces. The motif of a carnation goes back to a more famous Madonna in Munich, by Leonardo da Vinci—perhaps his first painting on that theme and among the first paintings to embody High Renaissance ideals. The pyramid here, completed by the arm at left and architecture at right, also recalls Leonardo.

Joos, then, almost surely had no contact with flora across the ocean, but plenty of contact with this canvas. Abrams himself, however, realized another possibility, for if Joos had painted the Madonna, another hand could have added the second flower much later. Could someone at least look closely at the painting's surface to see? Major scholars historians who ascribed the painting to Joos, such as Max Friedlander, never thought to ask.

I found Abram's third possibility a no-brainer. First, symbolism requires that the natural world speak in an economical language. One flower growing out of another just will not do. Besides, it does not look terribly naturalistic. Moreover, I had to suspect the black background. Black hides a multitude of sins, much as in clothing, and indeed I began to wonder if it effaced the carnation's thorns. Joos himself did as much as anyone to add detailed backdrops, broken

GREEN ENERGY ROLLS ON

GREEN ENERGY ROLLS ON

ANOTHER AMAZING, EMPOWERING, LIFE CHANGING STORY ABOUT THE BIG GREEN ENERGY MACHINE CONQUERING THE WORLD AND EXPLAINING HOW IT'S CHANGING LIVES FOR THE BETTER DAILY.....OR NOT.........LOL ..WHAT A COLLECTION OF JACKASSES

July 14, 2011
GERMANY'S GIANT GREEN REVERSAL
Steve McCann

The theater of the absurd is not only in production on the banks of the Potomac, but also in Berlin. Last spring the German Government made a monumental declaration with all the pomp and circumstance included: the country would phase out all its nuclear plants by 2022, shuttering 7 immediately in the wake of the Fukushima disaster and phasing out the rest of their 10 remaining plants as quickly as possible over the next ten years. It took only 3 months for reality to rear its ugly head. Per Der Spiegel:

Germany's energy agency is warning that one of the German reactors mothballed in the wake of Fukushima may have to be restarted to make up for possible power shortages this winter and next. Berlin is also using money earmarked for future energy efficiency to subsidize coal-fired plants.

With concern rising that solar and wind power might not be sufficient on cold winter days, one of the older reactors will likely have to be switched back on.

Merkel and her government have celebrated the phase out of nuclear energy in Germany as an "energy revolution" and vowed to make up for the capacity lost through the reactor shutdowns through billions in investments in renewable energies and energy savings measures. But according to a report in the daily Berliner Zeitung on Wednesday, some of that money has now been earmarked to subsidize the construction of new coal-fired plants.

Criticism from the Greens has been scathing, with parliamentarian Oliver Krischner telling the paper that "coal-fired plants are damaging to the climate and are not flexible enough to make up for fluctuations in supply from renewable resources.

[Natural gas-fired plants are another option] But it is expensive. Whereas a megawatt hour of electricity produced by coal currently costs between 18 and 19 Euros [US$25-27], a megawatt of gas-electricity costs 40 Euros [US$57]. "In Germany at the moment, we don't see a price scenario that would allow for newly constructed natural gas-powered plants to become profitable," the German energy giant RWE recently said in a statement.

It should also be noted that the cost per megawatt hour of nuclear generated power is between 15 and 20 Euros (US$21-28) and the actual cost of renewable energy considering the infrastructure requirements cannot be measured as the initial investment is so massive and unaffordable. () Further virtually all of Germany's natural gas must be imported from Russia thus subjecting them to the whims of an historical foe.

The German government has essentially turned to coal-fired plants as a replacement for nuclear. A spokesman for the German Federal Network Agency claimed that should a nuclear plant have to be switched back on for this winter or next, it is only a "temporary solution." After that there should be enough coal fired plants to fill the gap. This in a country that prides itself on being the world leader in "Green Awareness" as a majority of Germans believe in man's so-called devastating impact on "climate change."

One wonders what Mark Twain would have to say about the abject folly of the world leaders, headlined by Barack Obama, on stage today. Perhaps the Marx Brothers would be an apt comparison except theirs was pre-meditated comedy; the current cast of characters does not realize how foolish they constantly appear

Solar Panels

Solar Panels

Solar panels are quickly becoming an attractive alternative to using traditional energy sources such as electricity produced from coal or oil. Solar rays can easily be converted into energy using solar panels. Today's solar energy systems allow consumers to store energy that their panels collect in excess of what they need, and they can even sell the energy back to the grid if it's more than what is needed.

Solar panels can be expensive and it's often difficult for businesses or homeowners to recoup their initial investment if they don't use a lot of energy or they move after installing the panels. However, if installed at the outset of development, solar energy systems can be rather cost-effective.

This is one important area of environmental planning where planners can contribute to creating new incentives for the use of solar panels in new development.

IT Solutions in Western European SMBs, Adoption and Investment Plans for 2011: an IDC Survey

This study draws on the results of IDC's European Vertical Market Survey, carried out between May and August 2010 in the top 5 Western European countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the U.K.) among 1,130 SMBs with 20–499 employees. The focus of the study is on SMBs' adoption and plans for adoption of horizontal IT solutions, including enterprise resource planning (ERP), customer relationship management (CRM), unified communications (UC)/collaborative technologies, business intelligence (BI) and analytics, content/document management, and storage software. Results are also provided for the top 5 Western European countries (Italy, France, Germany, Spain, and the U.K.) and for total Western Europe for the following vertical markets: financial services, discrete manufacturing, process manufacturing, telecom/media, utilities/oil and gas, retail/, business services (including transportation), healthcare, and government (including education).
"SMBs have a stronger urgency to lower the costs of IT compared with large enterprises, so messages on low TCO and ROI are crucial to capitalize on SMB IT solutions opportunities. However, cost-related messages are not self-sufficient. In fact, SMBs are slowly returning to a more far-looking strategic approach to IT investments, and therefore, it is important that messages on data security, enhanced customer services, and sales productivity are also factored in," said Nina Bonagura, senior research analyst, IDC European Vertical Markets.

European Enterprise Services Survey, 2011: Datacenter Maturity and Investment Plans - Sweet Spots for Growth

European datacenters still have a long way to go before they can be classified as mature, and European companies are aware of that and ready to invest. In 2011 security, virtualization, automation, and cloud are top investment priorities.
"IDC's European Enterprise Services Survey 2011 of 701 European enterprises shows that the money will be in virtualization and automation services in 2011, complemented by more basic services to standardize and consolidate the IT environments. There is a widespread need for increasing infrastructure maturity before moving to advanced technologies," said Mette Ahorlu, research director, IDC. "Cloud is also a high priority in many companies, but at a more cautious level: investigations and getting experiences through focus on self-contained processes is key in 2011, while virtualization and automation in 2011 will touch the business-critical part of IT."

Southern Florida Wetland - Nature of America No. 8

Southern Florida Wetland - Nature of America No. 8

The subtropical wetlands of southern Florida are remnants of a great wilderness that stretched, unbroken, for hundreds of miles until about a century ago. They still include some of the most extensive saw grass marshes and mangrove swamps in the world--wetlands that support a remarkable number of species.

In southern Florida, plants and animals are well adapted to water level changes that correspond to alternating wet and dry seasons. Although some species require freshwater habitats, others are more salt tolerant. This stamp pane depicts a wetland community where freshwater mingles with salt water along the coast, and thus the art includes both freshwater and coastal species.

Much of Southern Florida's natural wealth is protected in Everglades National Park, a 1.5-million-acre preserve noted for its vast marshes and mangrove swamps. The park's wetlands are home to hundreds of bird species and such rare creatures as the Florida panther and Everglades mink. Its wetlands are also havens for the elusive American crocodile and the more common American alligator--such as the youngster eyeing spoonbills at the center of the scene.

Florida Red-shouldered Hawk

Florida Red-shouldered Hawk

Juvenile Southern Florida morph of the Red-shouldered Hawk - On the road to Flamingo, Everglades National Park, Florida

The Florida morph is a bit paler that it's norther brothers, and is endemic to southern florida.
Not as clear a shot as I would have liked (the air is thick in southern Florida), but I decided to post it since this is the first time I've sighted of photographed this species.

Note: Feel free to comment if you think me wrong on this ID.
It is after all the first I've seen, or at least the first I thought I saw! LOL

High Falls Brewing Co.

High Falls Brewing Co.

A little closer look at the High Falls Brewery complex, better known as the Genesee Brewing Co, in Rochester,NY. A little bit of history: In 1857 Charles Rau forms a brewery near the High Falls, he then adds partner Emil Reisky and renames company Rau and Reisky. In 1874 with the addition of Henry Spies it then becomes Reisky and Spies. In 1878 Mathius Kondolf, an early Rochester entrepreneur, takes control and changes the name to Genesee Brewing Co. (Charles Rau, founder of the original brewery is an officer on the board of the newly organized stock company). In 1889 investors purchase stock of three Rochester breweries: Genesee, Rochester, and Bartholomay. In 1919 - Prohibition. In 1932, after 11 years, Prohibition is terminated through the enactment of the 21st amendment. Meanwhile Louis A. Wehle purchases the former Genesee Brewery and part of Bartholomay brewery to form the new Genesee Brewing Co. In 1933 Genesee begins shipping. Distribution of Genesee expands across New York Sate and portions of Pennsylvania and Ohio the following year. As the years move along, new beers are added, sales keep rising, and the diiferent beer's receive awards. In 2000 the company was sold to an employee investment group and the name was changed to High Falls Brewing Co. In 2007 the new CEO announced a change in the Genesee brand labeling, which highlights a more classic look. In 2008, High Falls Brewery was sold to a New York City investment group to be run as part of its North American Breweries subsidiary. In June 2009 North American Breweries announced that the name of the brewery would be changed back to Genesee Brewing Co. to reflect the company's long history.

Seems like higher education is an obstacle. The years are spent racking debt through loans and you end up with no job. It's a poor investment.

A little process....

A little process....

Last month or so after reading some process from folks like Daniel Krall and Sam Bosma, and a lot of big projects that stressed me out I got fed up with my process and decided to streamline. I'm going to take another video later, but as you can see I'm working on layers in analog with marker paper-- a roughed out sketch, and then on top I trace out the shapes that will eventually become my colors/flats. Eventually I'll make time for a full fledged 'how I do this' post but hopefully this is a good little start!
