Horn & Trumpet Pub - Native American Sculpture

Horn & Trumpet Pub - Native American Sculpture

The Horn and Trumpet pub carries this sculpture of the sculptor's view of what a Native American would look like. The Headdress is either tobacco leaves or feathers. The whole figure is a smaller version of the original which was on the prow of the Victorian paddle steamer Demerara, which was destroyed in 1851

The original figure from the boat was mounted on a building on Quay Street but disintegrated when the building was demolished in the 1930s. The figure symbolises the British owned country of Demerara (now Guyana), where sugar was grown on plantations.

After the riot

After the riot

A Farida acoustic guitar was damaged when it was thrown at a limited edition (?3400) Gibson, which was also damaged.

Dawsons Music store in Manchester, the morning after the riot / looting spree. The ground floor was ransacked of keyboards and high tech gear like microphones, and considerable damage done to shopfittings, though it could have been much, much worse. The dumbass looters, whilst wrecking some guitars on the way through, largely ignored high-end Gibson and Taylor guitars to run off with entry-level beginners bass guitars. If only they'd paid attention in school, they would have been able to read the price tickets. And they complain that they can't get a job (not that they want one...).

Within an hour of these photos, the shop was open and trading, with a stream of customers and friends dropping in to wish us well - and buy stuff.

Douglas

Douglas, Just Now

Douglas, Just Now

I am so uneasy tonight.
Douglas is 18? years old and has hyperthyroidism, which is being controlled with medication, but just after his last vet visit two weeks ago he's been going downhill fast. He's so skinny, even though he does eat (although he did not eat tonight), and his howling (which he's been doing for a year-and-a-half) became a weak meow a few weeks ago and now I realize he hasn't made a sound in a week, except for purring, when we're close.
Something feels different about tonight. After she ate, Betsy quietly laid on the floor about a meter from him, instead of following me around.
He doesn't seem to be in distress, no labored breathing, but...
I know it has to happen sometime, you know, the end, but I have to tell you I do not approve. Even if it's peaceful.

?????????

?????????

When learning to play the trumpet many teachers start with the note C. This is an open note and can be played without valves. The next highest note with the same fingering (open) is a whole fifth up. This is the next "natural lip position" on this instrument. All the notes in-between these two notes (1-5) are created using the valves. On the staff the trumpet player is taught to read these notes as "C" and "G." Now we know that the sounds created by the trumpet are really the notes "Bb" and "F" as played on a piano. The trumpet is a transposable instrument. When playing the trumpet the player must know the music they are reading is written a whole step higher then the instrument is sounding. I.E. If the music script is in the key of "G" then the horn is sounding the "F" scale on a piano, guitar, flute, recorder, all the strings, oboe, banjo and accordion Etc. When you lookup the fingerings for an "A" scale in a trumpet book you must remember that you are sounding the key of "G."

Mandolin

Mandolin

This was my Grandad's mandolin. He was an accomplished player but gave up after an accident at work where he lost the top of one of his fingers and was unable to play. It is decorated with "Mother of Pearl" inlays and the original ribbons and charms, it also has the original case. My Mum had this at home for many years but has now passed it on to my cousin Ian to "keep it in the family". Ian is a guitar player so it was more fitting for him to have it as we are all brass players. I don't know the age of the instrument but I guess 1890's looking at similar pictures :-)

I didn't think about taking the picture until the handover, it was a bit of a rush job so I don't think I did it justice :-(

I have seen other ones like this on ebay, not as ornate as this one, going for ?60ish.

Mandolin

Mandolin

From Castelnuovo market. Nice little restoration project...

Funnily enough, 4 or 5 years ago, my craving to get back into music made me fancy getting/making a mandolin.

But Caro got the craving as well so instead we got a guitar & bass + amps. I did buy a book on making one, but it was a US folk style thing, seriously complicated.

This on the other hand is a pretty straightforward shape and gives me a structure to work from.

Lacy Gunne Sax Prairie Skirt

Lacy Gunne Sax Prairie Skirt

This skirt is made of soft cotton and features Gunne's trademark lace and satin piping at the waist and the hem of the skirt. Zips up in back with two buttons at the top. Two pockets. Unlined.

Sadly, I just noticed about a 3" tear in the lace at the hem of the skirt. You can see it in the first picture here, at the top of my boot. It is thin enough to be virtually unnoticeable when wearing it, and could be sewn together, but I have (of course!) adjusted the price accordingly. Other than that, in great vintage condition.

Label: Jessica's Gunnies, San Francisco, Size 11 (this line was made for adolescents and will not fit a woman who usually wears Gunne Sax in a size 11).

For more, find the shop URL in my profile :-)

My grandmother made this dress for me when I was little, and this Thanksgiving, Selma wore it. The vest is quilted and there are tons of finishing details with lace and ribbon. Selma loved how twirly the skirt was--I remember liking that myself.

In its turn, by the specks of darkness dispersed among the flakes. He
closed the window. This abrupt transition from torrid warmth to cold
winter affected him. He crouched near the fire and it occurred to him
that he needed a cordial to revive his flagging spirits. He went to the
dining room where, built in one of the panels, was a closet containing a
number of tiny casks, ranged side by side, and resting on small stands
of sandal wood. This collection of barrels he called his mouth organ. A
stem could connect all the spigots and control them by a single
movement, so that once attached, he had only to press a button concealed
in the woodwork to turn on all the taps at the same time and fill the
mugs placed underneath. The organ was now open. The stops labelled
flute, horn, celestial voice, were pulled out, ready to be placed. Des
Esseintes sipped here and there, enjoying the inner symphonies,
succeeded in procuring sensations in his throat analogous to those which
music gives to the ear. Moreover, each liquor corresponded, according to
his thinking, to the sound of some instrument. Dry curacoa, for example,
to the clarinet whose tone is sourish and velvety; _kummel_ to the oboe
whose sonorous notes snuffle; mint and anisette to the flute, at once
sugary and peppery, puling and sweet; while, to complete the orchestra,
_kirschwasser_ has the furious ring of the trumpet; gin and whiskey burn
the palate with their strident crashings of trombones and cornets;
brandy storms with the deafening hubbub of tubas; while the
thunder-claps of the cymbals and the furiously beaten drum roll

Bass Sax Relocating.jpg

Bass Sax Relocating.jpg

The bass saxophone is going on a concert tour with a well known musician. I took these shots to record its departure. It makes me feel good to know that the horn will be making music again. Since I converted it from a wall hanging to a playing saxophone 10 years ago, It hasn't made much music. There was one advantage making a shipping container for a horn this big. Weight is not an issue. With a container this size, UPS charges as if it weighed 121 pounds regardless of the actual weight. I first built a foam box using insullation board and then made a tray box from a refrigerator carton that Lowe's was kind enough to give me. Way back in a past life, I worked in quality control for a manufacturer. Our most effective test of packaging designs was to ship the product UPS Ground from coast-to-coast and back.
