View of State Street, tennis team, and brand new Lawyers Club, from Union Tower -- 1925.

Perhaps taken from the tower window of the Union's Michigamua room. This probably was in the spring of 1925, when the first part of the Law Quad was brand new. Although tracks of the streetcar system still are visible at the right, I can't see them in the intersection, where they may already have been removed, since the streetcar system was discontinued in January. (Nor are supports for an overhead trolley wire in evidence.) Students are returning from Ferry Field, where they have witnessed an exhibition or tournament of some kind. Many are on the sidewalks, but quite a few are walking in the street, as crowds returning from the games were wont to do. Among those obstructing vehicular traffic are two dozen men dressed in white, who may be toting tennis rackets. Or did the Wolverines field a cricket team in those days?

This and many of the photos that follow are from the student photo album of an unknown old grad. The album was found at a rummage sale in Buffalo, New York.

Found: The children are not aware...

Found: The children are not aware...

I found several of these Post It notes stuck together in St. Catharines yesterday. The handwritten notes contained voice mail instructions, phone numbers, appointments, a packing list, and people to contact. I don't know who wrote them but from what I can gather from this note I posted and the other information I'm guessing they might be a marriage counsellor, case worker, or a lawyer. It's probably a she too. The packing list included "hair stuff"and "knot bracelet".

Here's what it says:

"Dissatisfied w/various aspects of her life, esp. marriage. like this for the past few years but children are not aware of situation. wants to deal w/ it on individ basis first."

Larry Covington

Larry Covington

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Matt J. Whitworth, Acting United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, announced Friday that the former street department superintendent for the city of Nixa, Mo., along with his wife and another former city worker, have been indicted by a federal grand jury for a series of mail fraud and money laundering schemes totaling more than $756,000.

Larry W. Covington, 49, and his wife, Paula K. Covington, 52, both of Ash Grove, Mo., and David W. Griggs, 44, of Willard, Mo., were charged in a 51-count indictment returned under seal by a federal grand jury in Springfield on Thursday, May 14, 2009. That indictment was unsealed and made public Friday upon the arrest and initial court appearance of Griggs. The federal indictment replaces a criminal complaint that was filed against Griggs on April 15, 2009.

Covington was employed by the city of Nixa from March 6, 2000, to Feb. 23, 2009. He was appointed to be the superintendent of the street department on May 6, 2004.

Griggs was employed as a utility worker in the city street department from
Nov. 6, 2003, to Feb. 8, 2006. He was promoted to be the lead utility worker on Aug. 4, 2004.

The federal indictment alleges that Larry Covington and Griggs participated in a conspiracy to defraud the city of Nixa. They allegedly used two businesses established by Griggs - Airborne Specialist (sometimes referred to as Airborne Specialists) and Tri-State Supply - to invoice the city of Nixa for approximately $273,645 in goods and services that were never provided. The federal indictment also alleges that Larry Covington used a business that he established - Ward & Spooner - to invoice the city of Nixa for approximately $482,365 in goods and services that were never provided.

Mail Fraud Conspiracy

According to the indictment, Larry Covington and Griggs participated in a mail fraud conspiracy from Oct. 18, 2004, to Feb. 25, 2009. Larry Covington allegedly initiated fraudulent purchase orders for goods and services to be supplied to the city of Nixa by Airborne Specialist(s).

Larry Covington allegedly submitted 83 fraudulent invoices to the city, totaling $183,435, for goods and services that were never provided by Airborne Specialist(s). In each case, the indictment says, Larry Covington acknowledged receipt of these goods, which were never received.

As part of the conspiracy, the indictment says, Larry Covington also submitted 39 fraudulent invoices from Tri-State Supply to the city of Nixa, totaling $90,209, for goods and services that were never provided by Tri-State Supply. In each case, the indictment says, Larry Covington acknowledged receipt of these goods, which were never received.

Griggs established separate post office boxes for the two businesses. When the city mailed checks payable to the businesses, the indictment says, they were deposited into business bank accounts. Larry Covington and Griggs then split the proceeds of the fraudulent invoices.

In addition to the conspiracy, Larry Covington and Griggs are charged with 11 related counts of mail fraud.

Ward & Spooner Scheme

According to the indictment, Larry Covington repeatedly used Ward & Spooner to invoice the city of Nixa for goods and services that were never provided. Between Dec. 7, 2004, and Feb. 25, 2009, Larry Covington allegedly submitted 150 fraudulent invoices totaling $482,365 to the city of Nixa for goods and services that were never provided. Larry Covington repeatedly made false representations to the city that Ward & Spooner would supply goods and services, the indictment says, and falsely represented to the city that goods had been delivered and that services had
been performed by Ward & Spooner by signing or initialing fraudulent invoices.

Larry Covington established a post office for Ward & Spooner. When the city mailed checks payable to Ward & Spooner, the indictment says, they were deposited into a business bank account.

Larry Covington is charged with 11 counts of mail fraud related to this scheme.

Money Laundering

All three defendants are charged with participating in a money laundering conspiracy. According to the federal indictment, between Oct. 18, 2004, and Feb. 25, 2009, Larry and Paula Covington and Griggs conspired to conduct financial transactions involving the proceeds of the alleged mail fraud.

In addition to the conspiracy, Larry Covington is charged with 13 counts of money laundering, Paula Covington is charged with two counts of money laundering and Griggs is charged with two counts of money laundering.

Additional Charges

Additionally, Larry Covington is charged with 10 counts of embezzling from an organization receiving federal funds, and Griggs is charged with him in six of those counts.

The indictment also contains forfeiture allegations, which would require the Covingtons and Griggs to forfeit to the government $756,010 as well as their residential property in Ash Grove, a 2004 Bombadier Outlander,

IMG 000476ps

IMG 000476ps

This coming weekend I have to bring Terrance to my friend's house while my mom sells her house. When I moved into my apartment, my landlord didn't allow pets (a legal grey area), so I left Terrance with my mom until my next move. Then a few weeks ago, she told me that the real estate agent told her that the pets had to go while the house was on the market...because, you know, a parrot is just as bad as a meth lab, cockroaches, or weapons of mass destruction. Anyway, I ranted on Facebook about it and a friend offered to take Terrance while the house was on the market, which was nice of him. I asked the landlord again last week if he minded if I took Terrance in, and he said "Absolutely not". That infuriated me, since he is actually not within his rights to evict me over it, so therefore I could take Terrance into the apartment and be legally safe. But I figured this was not worth a fight...so Terrance is going with my friend temporarily.

I trust my friend to look after Terrance, and I know he'll be in good hands...but I did need to get this landlord-pet issue out in the open and expose it to some of your opinions. The thing is, he is legally allowed to say "no pets" in the ad for the apartment for rent...but he is not legally allowed to evict a tenant for having a pet in the apartment, unless it's causing damage or triggering allergies. Now, I've never heard of a bird allergy, and it's especially frustrating to me, since he has two dogs living with him upstairs; one of which is a yappy puppy that has woken me up several times.

I was pretty damn angry last week for a few days...and while Flickr is perhaps not the ideal place to vent about this sort of thing, it's more satisfying to point out someone else's wrongdoing on the Internet, for billions to see, rather than keep it bottled up inside. At this point, I'm going to wait it out and hope karma takes my side in the coming months.

July was a pretty shitty month when it came to looking at apartments, making decisions, and moving in. I had problems with the landlord probably 70% of the times we encountered each other during that period...he had an issue with where we parked; with how much stuff I was bringing in to the apartment; with some minor, minor damage to his driveway that happened when my buddy was moving his stuff in; with keeping the fan on in the bathroom after a shower; with storing stuff in the furnace room...at one point he started chewing me out in front of my brother who was helping me move some stuff...when I went away to Nova Scotia at the end of July, I was so glad to get away from the bullshit. From the time I came back in early August, until last Wednesday, I didn't have any issues whatsoever. Then after I told him about Terrance, it was like "Well, here we go again". We only took this apartment because it was by far the nicest one we saw...I don't like having to drive 3 times the distance to work now; I don't like the fact that it's always cold in here; I don't like the fact that I live in Durham now; and I can't stand the landlord...but I moved here because it was a good middle ground between where I work and where my roommate...used to work...I wanted to live further west in Scarborough, you know, some place more interesting...and now we're stuck here. I have to take a good look at whether the spaciousness and niceness of the physical apartment is worth the bullshit that goes along with it...it's hard writing this when I'm in a decent mood, because it feels like I'm forcing the anger...but it needs to be said. I don't know how long I'm going to be able to live here before I need to get out.

Testify

Testify

My first subpoena. :) Aren't I the sentimental one?

So what happened is this:

There was a homeless shelter near the college I attended. My apartment was only a mile or so off campus and I'd walk to and from classes a couple times a day.

One night, I guess this guy from the homeless shelter followed me home, got into the hall of my apartment building and stole an envelope I had for the outgoing mail. Turns out it was my rent check, he forged my landlord's signature and tried to cash it. I think they caught him right then and there but it sure caused me a lot of headaches.

I didn't know anything was wrong until I got an angry call from my landlord and then had to jump through a bunch of hoops with my bank to get the money back in my account.

Anyway... don't remember what happened with this. It must have been settled out of court. I never did testify. Don't have a clue what the guy looked like but I've always remembered his name.

Hanson, Dredge on the Allegheny River @ River Forest

Hanson, Dredge on the Allegheny River @ River Forest

By Mary Ann Thomas
FOR THE VALLEY NEWS DISPATCH
Monday, January 5, 2009

After hearing all of the bangs, clangs, screeching and voices in the middle of the night, there is finally peace in Pool 4 for the residents of River Forest.

The commercial dredging operations have ceased in the Allegheny River near the backyards of the River Forest community, one of the few residential waterfront developments in the region.

Hanson Aggregates PMA of New Kensington has moved its dredging operation upstream from Pool 4 to Pool 5, according to the state Department of Environmental Protection.

Calls to Hanson for comment were not returned.

Recently, Hanson and two other commercial dredgers dropped an appeal with the state Environmental Hearing Board on new dredging regulations near the River Forest community.

Residents have long been disturbed by the noise of the operations. They were irked by the industry's freedom to set up a barge and a large powered clamshell bucket to mine the river bed into the night and on weekends within sight and ear shot of a residential neighborhood.

Some of the residents said they felt that the fresh water mussels were afforded more protection from the dredgers than they were.

So they rallied and complained about the noise, hired an attorney, hired an acoustics engineer, filed appeals, worked with local and state lawmakers to restrict try to force the dredge away from River Forest.

State Sen. Jim Ferlo, D-Highland Park, persuaded Kathleen McGinty, the former DEP secretary, to visit with River Forest residents in March, after which the residents scored a victory.

DEP added conditions to the dredging permit requiring Hanson to make less noise and limit its hours of operations in the River Forest area.

Residents continued to work with Ferlo, who vows to draft legislation limiting the work of an industry that has, for about 150 years, dredged the sand and gravel lining the beds of the Allegheny and Ohio rivers.

Decades ago, the industry was barely perceptible to the average person because the river was not the pleasure palace that it is today.

But as communities like River Forest as well as remodeled camps, trails, marinas and kayak tours now dot the waterfront, more people are noticing the river-dredging operations.

"We have gone through a fundamental shift along the three rivers, and it has changed what people want to live next to," Ferlo said.

"In Allegheny Township, they put blood, sweat and tears into those beautiful homes only to wake up to an industrial factory next to them, which just happens to be the river."

But river dredging isn't really a high profile operation because only four dredges operate in a 100-mile swath of water from the Allegheny River's Pool 9 just north of Rimer in Armstrong County to the Ohio River at the Ohio/West Virginia border, said Dan Giovannitti, spokesman for the dredging industry.

"Very few people have even seen a dredge," he said. "The amount of river bottom that is touched by a dredging operation in any given year is probably 4 to 5 acres."

Good gravel

The dredgers often find themselves under attack by environmental and other interests that question the existence of the industry and its impact on the river.

In fact, the only three companies that dredge the river -- Hanson, Glacial Sand and Gravel of Kittanning and Tri-State River Products of Beaver -- often unite to conduct environmental studies and appeal new restrictions and other legalities that could limit the scope of their work.

The industry employs about 250 workers in the region and mines about 3.5 million tons of sand and gravel from the Allegheny and Ohio rivers, Giovannitti said.

One of the advantages of river dredging, he said, is that an enormous amount of material is moved via barges directly to terminals and processing plants instead of dump trucks, which would require about 160,000 trips on land to move the same sand and gravel.

"It's a very efficient and sound way of capturing material," said Giovannitti.

Additionally, the river sand and gravel is a high grade employed for anti-skid material and asphalt for PennDOT, the major user of river aggregate.

Giovannitti stresses that a series of intense studies conducted by the industry -- with protocols approved by several environmental agencies -- demonstrated that there are no significant impacts on aquatic life posed by dredging.

"The river bottom has changed, certainly," he said. "But as a result of our studies, there was very little change about how dredging was conducted."

Permit conditions for dredging continue to evolve.

For example, dredging companies have been conducting mussel surveys for about 35 years.

"What's changed is the protocol -- how long a diver should be there and to study every one-tenth of a mile," Giovannitti said.

But the industry continues to be challenged because interest in the river continues to grow.

Have I ever discussed BK's tongue with you, flickr? No? It's not a normal tongue -- it looks like chopped meat. I'm sure there's a medical term for it, maybe even in Latin, but I don't know what it is. Anyhow, not only is BK's tongue weird looking, it's also apparently overly large and is the culprit behind his snoring, which has gotten bad enough that he had a sleep study done (no sleep apnea) and tried the pillar implants procedure.

Sadly, it didn't have much effect at all, so poor BK and his overly large chopped meat tongue usually sleep in the guest bedroom.

Richard Harris - A man called horse remembered

Richard Harris
Screen Legend
Born: October 1, 1930
Limerick, Ireland
Died: October 25, 2002
London, England
"I'm not interested in reputation or immortality, or things like that. I don't care if I'm remembered. I don't care if I'm not remembered. I don't care why I'm remembered. I genuinely don't care."

Richard Harris was a hell-raiser, a reputation built on his fiery lifestyle with the likes of Richard Burton, Peter O’Toole and Oliver Reed. He was also a highly respected actor with fifty movies to his name and two oscar nominations.

Richard Harris was born in Limerick in 1930, one of eight children of a flour-miller. His love of acting led Harris, in 1954, to move to London, where he studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art - Lamda, before joining Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop company, with whom he made his first professional appearance, in Brendan Behan's The Quare Fellow at the Theatre Royal, Stratford East.

After graduating, Harris spent nearly a decade in obscurity, learning his profession on stages throughout the UK and making a few films including The Wreck Of The Mary Deare (1961), The Long And The Short And The Tall (1961) and Mutiny On The Bounty (1962).

His big break however came in 1962. Lindsay Anderson cast Harris as Frank Machin, the aggressive and inarticulate rugby player, in the film This Sporting Life. Nominated for an Oscar, he rapidly became a major Hollywood name, playing opposite stars like Kirk Douglas (The Heroes of Telemark 1965), Charlton Heston (Major Dundee1965) and Julie Andrews (Hawaii 1966).

In 1967 Harris took one of the most significant roles in his career, which was eventually to make him a multi-millionaire. Although the Lerner-Loewe musical Camelot (1967), in which he portrayed King, was an expensive flop, he would later play the role - created by Richard Burton - many times on stage, both on Broadway and in London in the 1980s, and buy its rights. He also released a hit single - Jim Webb's MacArthur Park (1968) which sold five million copies worldwide.

The 70’s started well with A Man Called Horse (1970), but was for the most part a forgettable decade. "I consider a great part of my career a total failure," Harris said. "I went after the wrong things - got caught in the 60s. I picked pictures that were way below my talent. Just to have fun.".

Given the last rites by a priest after one drunken binge, Harris gave up the booze in the 1980s, an went into semi retirement. In the 90’s he returned to some impressive roles. His performance, as Bull McCabe in the 1990 film, the Field, brought him an Oscar nomination as Best Actor and he was also highly acclaimed as English Bob in Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven (1992)

In recent years, he appeared in the first two Harry Potter movies. His film portrayal of Professor Albus Dumbledore, headmaster of Hogwart's School, was perhaps his most successful role of all.

The statue looks tiny and is less than half actual size. Richard Harris was a giant of a man and locally the statue has been referred to as a “gnome king”.

FAT BOY ROBERT RIZZO AND HIS MERRY BAND OF THIEVES DO THE PERP WALK

THIS BUNCH OFCORRUPT CLOWNS WAS FINALLY ARRESTED TODAY 9/21/10 IN CALIFORNIA -------------WHAT A GROUP--CALIFORNIA POLITICS AT IT'S BEST ---CHICAGO AND OUR GANGSTER PRESIDENT DON'T HAVE ANY THING ON US

OH!! AND IS OUR "LITTLE MAN" PRESIDENT GONNA BE PISSED AT THIS GUY

Robert Rizzo, a former city manager to the Los Angeles suburb of Bell, was among eight current and former city officials arrested Tuesday in a corruption investigation. Rizzo's exorbitant salary was what ignited the public's anger and led to the police sweep today.

The district attorney's office said several City Council members were taken into custody along with ex-city manager Robert Rizzo and Mayor Oscar Hernandez.

"This, needless to say, is corruption on steroids," District Attorney Steve Cooley said at a news conference in Los Angeles
The district attorney, state attorney general and others have been conducting investigations of officials in the small working-class city since it was disclosed they were paying themselves huge salaries. Rizzo was making nearly $800,000 a year.

The investigations involve allegations of corruption, misuse of public funds and voter fraud in the city where one in six of the 40,000 residents live in poverty.

A message left at Rizzo's Huntington Beach home was not immediately returned.

Cooley said one arrest required authorities to use a battering ram.

The suspects were booked into county facilities and will be kept away from other inmates for their protection, Los Angeles County sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said.

The arrests were the latest twist in a scandal that emerged in July with the disclosure that Rizzo was paid almost twice the salary of President Barack Obama.

It also was revealed that former Police Chief Randy Adams was making $457,000 a year, and Assistant City Manager Angela Spaccia was paid $376,288. Four of the five City Council members paid themselves nearly $100,000 a year for their part-time service.

Rizzo, Adams and Spaccia resigned and the council members reduced their salaries to about $8,000 following the disclosures and angry public reaction. The four council members are currently the target of a recall.

The Manson Girls: The Next Generation

The Manson Girls: The Next Generation

(RPI TVWatch) – Building on the tremendous success of its reality dramas “Laguna Beach” and “The Hills,” hailed by critics as “unwatchable by anyone under the age of 25,” MTV plans to roll out a slightly darker version of the same beaten formula in the upcoming fall season with “The Manson Girls: The Next Generation”.

The unscripted reality series will follow the exploits of three highly-annoying recent high school grads, Bethany, Hillary, and Maddie, as they spend the final summer before college in Sausalito working as a lifeguard, retail associate, and photographer’s assistant respectively by day while committing serial ritual murders by night on the instructions of Charles Manson, who communicates to them through their cat “Princess.”

"They’re delighted by the success of Laguna and the Hills, but the network felt they wanted something a little edgier,” said Brian Berker, the show’s creator and executive producer, “We’re still documenting the lives of rich, vapid California girls in excruciating detail, but in this case we get the added bonus that they’re actually real-life serial killers.”

Berker admits he was initially skeptical of their authenticity when their agent first pitched the idea, but became a believer after following them for a day with a handheld – a day that ended with the ritual slaughter of a successful real estate agent in his palatial California home.

"I only wish I’d been a believer from the get-go because that one may have been their best ever,” said Berker, who could not use the footage due to poor lighting. “Maybe I’m biased because it was my first time.”

Dr. Daniel G. Heller, Chair of Alternative American Studies at UCLA, said he sees the show exposing a new generation to the uniquely American antics that characterized the first Manson Family.

“It’s travesty that the man’s - that Charlie’s legacy has been lost on today’s youth,” said Heller, who’s written several as yet unperformed experimental operas based on the exploits of Manson and his followers. “He magnified the wild manic death energy terror creeping inside of each one of us. He took the death seed, spread it to his followers and it grew into this wild beautiful terrifying venus fly-trap bloodthirsty flower that was hell-bent on devouring the whole bourgeoisie capitalist fascist police state and it was a beautiful thing man! Just beautiful man! Just beautiful! Just beautiful!”

Although the series is expected to air Tuesdays in The 10 Spot starting in September, there is a strong likelihood that it will definitely be a one-season run for the show, as the girls are currently in custody at a maximum security California prison facing 35 counts of murder in the first degree.

Berker, himself facing multiple counts of aiding and abetting, but currently out on bail, was nevertheless optimistic that the series could go on, despite a lack of cooperation from the California Attorney General’s office.

“Look, if you could have put a camera on OJ during his trial, you’d have been a genius,” said Berker. “No way we don’t get to shoot this and no way it doesn’t get picked up. It’ll work itself out. Just look at who the governor of this state is.”

“I just hope that Charlie likes it,” said Bethany.

So I'm on my way to Church, where I have to be early 'cause the choir's rehearsing for Christmas, and it's about 2 degrees above zero (F) with a wind chill of 22 below 0 (which, in case you don't know, is the kind of cold that is painful to any exposed skin), and there's this beautiful frost all over the windows in the garage door.
