February is yolk yellow in my mind's eye
February bounds to life with yellow forsythias, cheery daffodils and the short and sturdy “early” tulips that push up through the cold soil. If you keep your eyes to the ground you might see the beautiful sunny center of the snow crocus.
Paper fine ranunculus symbolize new beginnings as this is the time of the new year for many cultures. Bamboo shoots peek through the garden floor. Wild yellow dandelions put on a happy face.
Certain golden marigolds spring up to offer chickens richer egg yolks, garnishes for salads and as an ointment for diaper rash, eczema and cradle cap.
Also ushering in pre-spring are the season’s first bright lettuces and endives with light yellow caps. Overwintered, you will be eating the last of the butternut squash in its mustard yellow pajamas waiting to warm you when roasted with brown sugar. A gentle reminder that "ah, ah, ah" spring is not here yet.
For us it’s a circus of oranges and lemons gleaned from trees along with wild salad with crisp lemony tanginess. Homemade yogurt, buttermilk, creme fraiche and whisked mayonnaise line the shelves in various hues of ecru, just a hint of pale yellow in its palate.
February in my minds eye is yellow, that first flash of life in a sunny yolk, and dreams of fluffy baby chicks. Yellow is joy and hope.
Yellow makes me think of many things edible and soul soothing, our bodies defrosting drip by drip like melted butter over sourdough pancakes or a sunny Sunday morning with steam rising from the pile of freshly made crepes, or a wonderful gooey flan for dessert that you had to wait 24 hours to eat. Pale yellow is the color of honey sourdough bread and of golden waffles, of therapeutic chamomile tea and of freshly hanging cut pasta in a month that is filled with love and a happy glow.
What is that smell? The tiny yellow mimosa flowers freshly cut on the table. Oh, it’s sour dough baking! Or its the tempting aroma of essential oils melding with beeswax to make homemade lotions and lipbalms for winter weathered features. February finds me with some flour, eggs and not much else to live on, except homemade Limoncello so its all worth it.

Some more flowers from my garden. We moved here about 9 months ago, I am still finding beautiful plants and flowers that the previous owner planted; like us, he was a very keen gardener. The garden is split into two halves just over 200 feet long in total, I am sorry, but I don’t know the names of half the plants or flowers in this garden. Best viewed large. The Mad Hatter visits 1 Ramsey Lane Edinburgh off Castlehill former Edinburgh's poor school which was here years before woodcarver George Robertson started his apprenticeship iunder Thomas Good Sculptor and wood carver before taking over business as Master Woodcarver.
It was on these premises that Mr Robertson modelled and carved Edinburgh's cuckoo for The Floral Clock in 1952.and many other fantastic objects including repairs in churches and n 1947 cornices at Bank of Scotland The Mound and war memorials.Before setting up The Rest and be Thankful cafe 1959-1962 renamed Jacobean cafe & Gift Shop 1962 - 1976 now part of The camera Obscura Outlook Tower development who are now installing a new staircase at other end of building.

Still Loving You, Scorpions, Love At First Sting
This is one of the undeniably biggest power ballads of the 80’s. Still Loving You has so many deep meanings and inspirations to me. This album- this artist- this genera was very strictly forbidden by my family because rock and heavy metal were evil. This music was of the devil and I was a sinner if I listened to it… or so my parents and my church tried to convince me. Every day when my parents left for work I ran in and turned on MTv… sure enough this is one of the songs that played over and over.
This song has such a wonderful build up of emotion… a very haunting cord of the electric guitar in the beginning: it slowly builds up to a huge climax. This song really inspired me to be a singer (even though I truly never sing), mostly because I would “Air Mic” to this song… the same as an Air Guitar only as a singer. What can I say… I was a kid!
I always imagined slow dancing to this song when I was older. It seemed like it would be just a wonderful song to move to; even as a kid I was a romantic. I remember going to a dance and this song played. I got to see everyone else dance to this song except for me. But really in the moment I knew that I had no one to blame for myself because I was simply too chicken to ask anyone!
Years down the road I went through a break up. At first I was okay with it, but then I wanted the girl back. I was looking for a song that said exactly what I was trying to say. This song was it. When I really read the words wow… it was like I never heard this song before- or never paid much attention to it apparently. I wrote out the words and put it in a pretty card and delivered it with flowers… didn’t win her back, but it made me re-discover the song once again!

This isn't the best shot as I wanted this to be , but I like the angle captured here and this was taken with my P & S . Apparently , I forgot to charge up my big camera's battery night before and I don't want to miss out this opportunity to get the picture - bad or not as it may come out .The thing is the weather can be unpredictable or given the next day with the same lovely weather , but more people might turn up and it will totally alter the setting . In most circumstances , I take things as my last chance , get a snap and go . Not every day is the same day . =))

Started with a snippet of an old Soap/Perfume Ad (clip art), I cut out and thed 3D Crystal Lacquered just the portrait in the center. I wanted a Photo Frame Feel.
The shape in the background is a Slice cut out, inked and Pearls added.
The same with the Flowers: Slice and Brads.

Be Mine Pillow
My entry for Project Quilting 2:3 "Be My Valentine" Challenge...
I decided to give my project the look of vintage Valentines, with romantic clip art images made into Victorian-style crazy quilt blocks. I used fancy fabrics and flowery cottons in a vintage color scheme of taupe, cream, brown, light green, a little rose and pink, and lavender. All the embroidery and beading was done by hand. There's also an assortment of buttons, appliques, vintage lace and tatting that I also did by hand. The back is a beautiful shimmery upholstery fabric and I gave it a brown flowered piping edge.

I don't know the origin of this brooch, either. The rhinestones have a faint bluish tint, which I tried to play up with the bluish background (actually a mirrored tray) in this photo. It somewhat looks like a 60s style.

Rubin, Reuven (1893-1974) - 1922 Self-Portrait with a Flower (Rubin Museum, Tel Aviv, Israel)

Reuven Rubin was a Romanian-born Israeli painter and Israel's first ambassador to Romania. Rubin Zelicovici (later Reuven Rubin) was born in Galati to a poor Romanian Jewish Hasidic family. In 1912, he left for Ottoman-ruled Palestine to study art at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. Finding himself at odds with the artistic views of the Academy's teachers, he left for Paris, France, in 1913 to pursue his studies at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts. At the outbreak of World War I, he was returned to Romania, where he spent the war years. In 1921, he traveled to the United States with his friend and fellow artist, Arthur Kolnik, with whom he had shared a studio in Cernauti. In New York City, the two met artist Alfred Stieglitz, who was instrumental in organizing their first American show at the Anderson Gallery. Following the exhibition, in 1922, they both returned to Europe. In 1923, Rubin emigrated to Mandate Palestine.
The history of Israeli art began at a very specific moment in the history of international art, at a time of Cezannian rebellion against the conventions of the past, a time typified by rapid stylistic changes. Thus Jewish national art had no fixed history, no canon to obey. Rubin began his career at a fortunate time. The painters who depicted the country’s landscapes in the 1920s rebelled against Bezalel. They sought current styles in Europe that would help portray their own country’s landscape, in keeping with the spirit of the time. Rubin’s Cezannesque landscapes from the 1920s were defined by both a modern and a naive style, portraying the landscape and inhabitants of Israel in a sensitive fashion. His landscape paintings in particular paid special detail to a spiritual, translucent light.
In Palestine, he became one of the founders of the new Eretz-Yisrael style. Recurring themes in his work were the biblical landscape, folklore and people, including Yemenite, Hasidic Jews and Arabs. Many of his paintings are sun-bathed depictions of Jerusalem and the Galilee. Rubin might have been influenced by the work of Henri Rousseau whose style combined with Eastern nuances, as well as with the neo-Byzantine art to which Rubin had been exposed in his native Romania. In accordance with his integrative style, he signed his works with his first name in Hebrew and his surname in Roman letters.
Rubin was among the formulators of the primitivistic trend in the Eretz Israel art of the 1920s, which, in the spirit of the Zionist revival, saw the East as a primal, innocent world. His primitive linoleum cuts from his early years in the country, influenced by Medieval, German Expressionist and Modern Russian art, constitute a break with his earlier work abroad. In 1924, he was the first artist to hold a solo exhibition at the Tower of David, in Jerusalem. That year he was elected chairman of the Association of Painters and Sculptors of Palestine. From the 1930s onwards, Rubin designed backdrops for Habima Theater and other theaters.
His biography, published in 1969, is titled My Life - My Art. He died in Tel Aviv in 1974, after having bequeathed his home on 14 Bialik Street and a core collection of his paintings to the city of Tel Aviv. The Rubin Museum opened in 1983. Rubin's paintings are now increasingly sought after. At a Sotheby's auction in New York in 2007, his work accounted for six of the ten top lots.

Yes, I am still painting (pictures). The problem for me is that there are lots more things to do, like deciding which car I should buy, or going to the dentist, or thinking which lunch I should order :-) , or the small worries such as "I should tidy up the rooms!", "I should go to see the wild orchids!" or "I should......" "I should......" "I should ......" and so forth.
Silly, really, but with these (even trivial) things I really can't concentrate on painting enough. So it is very slow and as apart from summer time, I have much less time for painting so I should (!!!!) paint not just a painting, but as many paintings as I can. It is enjoyable, but so slow. :-((( And yet I would like to show some of my photographs :-(((

Last of the Tulips

Problem is that some flowers, especially tulips, that you find in the city don't last that long and quickly shed their petals, staining your white tablecloth... Here is a tip that Sara found in Breck's Flower catalogue to solve the problem: "Cut the stems diagonally. Wrap the entire flower (head and stem) "tightly" in newspaper. Place stem in water overnight. Remove the paper and recut the stems. Transfer the tulips to a vase with fresh water and plant food. Add water as needed and keep out of direct sun and drafts. Enjoy blooms for 7-10 days."
Skinny card Yellow flowers- Vaihto
The theme was yellow and we were to include a brad-so I used one in a tag to make a two part card. The child was printed on transparent paper-I added a yellow iris underneath first. Then I used a gardening catalog for the flower collage. There's some threads and a metal bee too. Can't forget the dried rose petals too.

Mothers day
today it was the Mothers day in Sweden. To celebrate this I made three diffrent kinds of ice cream. Raspberry parfait, cinnamon ice cream and rhubarb sorbet.

Surat An-Nur (Arabic: ???? ??????) (The Light) is the 24th sura of the Qur'an with 64 ayat.
Background
The general agreement of scholars is that is sura was revealed shortly before or after the Battle of the Trench in 5 AH
Content
This sura opens with a short introduction to the revelation of the Quran, as many other sura do - that is a reminder and a clear sign for people to look to.

The sura thus begins with various explanations and decrees on or relating to corrupt sexual acts, family law, and specifications on the giving of testimony. Foremost amongst these rulings is God's punishment for adultery. This section ends with the pronouncement that good men and women should be paired together, as should corrupt men and corrupt women. This discussion turns into reflections on privacy and modesty, namely of hosts and women. Contained herein are several regulations and explanations of modesty, most directly lines traditionally used to argue for the wearing of hijab. After these prohibitions are cast for women, the text turns towards men, asking them not to oppress slavegirls into prostitution, and to marry those women who need husbands, despite their poverty.

After a second statement of the Quran's status as a clear sign from above, the famed Ayat an-Nur appears. This is often referred to as "the Light Verse", or "the Parable of Light", a mystical group of lines that has been the subject of much scholarship and reflection.
"God is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The parable of His light is as if there were a niche and within it a lamp: The lamp enclosed in glass: The glass as it were a brilliant star: Lit from a blessed tree, an olive, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil is well-nigh luminous, though fire scarce touched it: Light upon Light! God doth guide whom He will to His light: God doth set forth parables for men: and God doth know all things."

The Qur'an here briefly returns to a slightly more literal form of speech as it reassures believers that their remembrance will be rewarded, as the forgetfulness of the sinners will be punished. In keeping with the Light Verse, the unbelievers too are explained in metaphor, returning to the deeply symbolic tone above:
"And as for the unbelievers, their works are as a mirage in a spacious plain,
in which a thirsty man thinks there to be water,
until when he comes to it, he finds it is nothing;
there indeed he finds God and He pays him his account in full;
and God is swift in the reckoning;
or they are as shadows upon a sea obscured,
covered by a billow above which is a billow above which are clouds;
shadows piled one upon the other;
when he puts forth his hand, wellnigh he cannot see it.
And whoever God assigns no light, no light has he." (Lines 39-40)
The Qur'an explains that the Earth itself is evidence of God's reality and power. He controls the clouds, the winds, the hail, and the mountains. It was God who chose which animals had four feet, which had two, and which had none.

The Qur'an confirms that God has sent down signs (ayat) to make His reality clear, and that understanding that reality is as a "straight path", that if one is truly following, one can never be led astray. God keeps His word, and will continue to reward those who believe and keep to their religion, as He as rewarded others in the past for doing the same.
The Book urges the believer not to fret, and not to accuse people of sin merely for the conditions of their birth or social status. For example, in many tribal cultures a blind person or their parents were believed to be wicked, hence the gods or the spirits have blinded them. The Qur'an urges one not to think in this manner, and instead remember that all things are signs from God, and thus all believers should be of good nature to others, and wish them blessings from God. If that is done, the signs become clear and "happily you will understand".
As the believer must greet others well, so must they ask for leave from them before departing. However, the sura ends, God knows the hidden reasons people do as they do, "God knows those of you who slip away surreptitiously", for when all returns to Him, they will testify against themselves to Him.

Hey Kaspersky - Where's the US and UK
The little Kaspersky pop up box is really getting on my nerves. About a month ago I downloaded and installed a trial version of their Internet Security 7.0 on my new HP Pavilion laptop -- w hich, by the way, came with a pre-installed Norton Anti-Virus. But I've always liked Kaspersky since our network administrator in Thailand installed it in all our school computers. And our tech guy here in Islamabad recommended it, too, because it's compatible with Windows Vista and includes a firewall and protection from spyware and spams, not just viruses.
So a few days before the expiration date came I clicked on the pop up box's "click here to purchase" link. I started filling out the online form then hit the wall when I couldn't find the United States, US, USA, or America in the list of countries (or UK for that matter). The strange thing is American Samoa is there, and also Virgin Islands US. So I sent a message to two e-mail addresses in their website, and still haven't heard from either. Meanwhile the pop-up boxes are driving me crazy. I should have stuck with Norton, it still works fine with our Windows XP desktop.

I've been yearning to do a cake with 'bling' trim for years....
