(6) img001 Folktales of the Amur, Stories from the Russian Far East.Nagishkin, Pavlishin. This is a book the black and whites left out for me. The illustrations make use of decorative motifs based on the communicating swirling line patterns of the ancient "symbols...of 'beginning' and becoming", as the long time gargoyle with the unusual looking hairstyle apparently based on Greek pottery art ((((I saw yesterday that he had changed his style to one which had short "butch" hair all over except on the back where a portion of the long, red, curly, pomaded hair he has always had arranged luxuriantly down his back in emulation of certain of the warriors on the red-figure vases pulled up into a longish, tight bun at the back of his head and neck.)))) as it says in his book, the Language of the Goddess, Gimbutas, (it's a broad survey of ancient pottery art and bone inscriptions in Europe from, say, 5,000 bc to 2 or 3,000.) This isn't the best example, but the swirls on the tigers body give a hint of how some paintings are built up of these designs and patterns. I think they are based on patterns the Amur people use in embroidery and other mediums. You can see the patterns pretty well in the log and the fungus growths, also. I decided to use this story because it has a lot of tigers in it and tigers are a frequent symbol in Buddhism especially in Tibet, where they take the part of a wrathful deity that destroys the matter based ego in favor of self-realization or enlightened knowledge of the perfected, eternal self; all being. The artist has given this tiger green eyes. I think it may be to emphasize the tiger's symbolic role as nature, like that of the dragon or maybe the ouraboros in its many forms or even the tao itself. Or at least that's what I think as I contemplate the successive reincarnation of eternal consciousness in changing nature. It's the story of two brothers whose dying father has given them an enigmatic moral dictum to "keep looking straight ahead all the time". The story begins as Indiga and his brother Solomdiga are hunting in the forest and Indiga, whose eyes were wandering, sees a tiger approaching, and pressing his palms together in what seems like an namaste but fails to take any action against the tiger which apparently carries off Solomdiga. As a result of this, Indiga is unable to carry out his work as hunter and trapper because the animals refuse to cooperate with this man with the "heart of a rabbit". The rabbit in others of these tales is a successful trickster, something like the coyote in North America. It seems to me that rabbits of this kind are frightened while coyotes are paranoid but maybe it's an unimportant distinction. When Indiga tells his mother of the problem of his rabbit's heart, she sends him to look for his "man's heart" which he has lost because of his fear. As he asks for help from various animals, an eagle gives him a feather and tells Indiga to follow it. In following it, he is confronted by seven obstacles but as he overcomes each of the first 6, he affirms this is not the fear that prevents him from finding his man's heart and continues on with his eyes on the feather. The 1 first trial is a boiling river which he passes over by clinging to an arrow. The second 2 is a tiger camp he passes through by using fire and smoke. The third 3 is a man-eating forest not unlike "The Little Shoppe of Horrors" or the bramble that protected Sleeping Beauty's castle. He overcame this one by throwing the carnivorous trees and vines hunks of the flesh cut from one of the tiger's. It reminded me of the way Atlanta was distracted by passion for the golden apples of the Hesperides. Obstacle 4 was a man with one arm and one leg who leads people astray in a swamp until they are lost and drown a little like Puck, the forest sprite in Midsummer Night's Dream who "...misleads night wanderers, laughing at their harm..." Indiga fooled this creature by tricking him into jumping so high with his one leg that he was lost in the clouds long enough for Indiga to escape. I can't think of why this swamp man had just one leg and one arm, why he was able to jump so high or why he was so easily tricked into doing so though his one arm and one leg remind me of the sound of one hand clapping, the distance of one foot walking koans we discussed while looking through Penelope Mason's book and considering zenga calligraphy and Zen master Bodidharma . After this, the 5th obstacle is represented by a flaming snake whom Indiga choked by means of a rock smeared with dirt scraped from his own body. The 6th obstacle was a man who had the power to turn indiga to stone but Indiga, after seeing one of his hands changed and tricking the monster into changing it back, took tobacco from his pouch and caused the ogre to inhale it until repeated sneezes drained him of his magical power. His tobacco pouch reminded me of North American Indian medicine bags Bent Elbow Signs of the past: Hautean Mike Rowe discovers rare lettering on Oak Street building By Mark Bennett The Tribune-Star TERRE HAUTE — Mike Rowe knows the rush of discovery. He once unearthed a long-lost recipe for his hometown’s trademark beer, revived the town’s old brewery and gave Terre Haute its first sips of Champagne Velvet in a half-century. Popular leisure spots such as Mogger’s Brewery, the CV Tap Room, Stables Steak House and the Brew Haus all trace their rebirth to Rowe’s passion for restoring relic buildings. He’s part carpenter, part archaeologist, in a way, of Hautean history. Rowe recently found another gem. On a similar mission for a group of local investors, he and a crew began peeling metal siding off the old Bent Elbow Tavern at 831 Oak St. Before they began working, the two-story, corner building looked indistinct, to the untrained eye. Vertical aluminum sheets wrapped its exterior. Dated paneling masked the interior walls. Rowe had a hunch this place, dating back to the turn of the 20th century, held some hidden beauty. He’s a student of the legends of Terre Haute’s brewing district and its heyday in the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s. The old tavern at 831 Oak held a spot in that vast legacy. As those legends tell it, the massive Champagne Velvet brewery that stood right across Ninth Street supplied that bar with its own pipeline of CV beer, flowing from the vats, under the road and into the tavern’s taps. The brewery tabulated the bill by reading a meter, almost like the gas company would do. So, this place’s past has some color. That’s the part Rowe already knew. The surprise came when he and his crew began pulling down the aluminum siding. Starting on the northeast corner, they stripped the sheets off the east wall, the one that once faced the old brewery. After a couple pieces came down, one of the guys spotted something and hollered at Rowe. There was some lettering on the grimy, shielded bricks. “I saw the ‘R’ and then ‘E,’ and I said, ‘OK, Vanna, give me another letter,’” Rowe recalled, grinning like Indiana Jones. What they found is a scarce, surviving “ghost sign,” explained Andrew Conner of Downtown Terre Haute Inc. In the early half of the 20th century, businesses used their buildings’ brick exteriors as a canvas for painted wall advertisements. “As time goes by, the buildings just disappear and the paint fades,” Conner said. “Those are getting rarer and rarer.” The ghost sign at the tavern, fittingly, promotes the beer pumping straight from the brewery to its taps. With a mix of black, white and colored paints, it urges passers-by to: “Drink Champagne Velvet Beer.” Just to emphasize the message, the word “beer” is repeated, not so subliminally, in larger, block, black letters. At the bottom is the slogan, “Bigger Beer, Enjoy the Mellow Strength.” Just above the ad is the name “Andy Byrne.” Byrne ran a grocery store at 831 Oak St. in the 1920s, according to research by Terre Haute historian Mike McCormick. Then, around 1933 or ’34, Byrne’s place became a saloon, McCormick said. The wall advertisement probably got painted in the 1930s, Rowe estimated. Rowe plans to have the sign professionally restored. It is one of the few ghost signs remaining in Terre Haute. The most visible survivor is a tobacco wall advertisement, featuring a frog, on the side of the Copper Bar at 810 Wabash Ave. Another can be found at 120 S. Eighth St. on the former WTHI Radio building. The wall ad isn’t the only element worth saving at the old Oak Street tavern, also once known as the Crown Lounge. The roof’s 22-inch overhang offered Rowe a hint of its architectural roots. “I said, ‘I’ll bet this is an outstanding Italianate,’” Rowe said. The decorative brackets had long been removed, but Rowe found some antique brackets similar to the building’s original design and soon had replacements up. Inside, Rowe and his team have taken the remaining, original dark wood and filled in its missing gaps with matching replacement pieces. The woodwork stretches from the floor to the ceiling high above, and some of the original window frames are still in place. On the interior side of that east wall, wood covers a large opening that once looked out at the cavernous factory across Ninth Street. That neighboring facility housed not only the CV brewery until the mid-1950s, but later the Chesty’s Potato Chips factory. Employees at both businesses often finished or started their workdays (or both) with a stop at the tavern. “Those people would pour out of the plant into the bar,” Rowe said. Over the years, the soot from the city’s once-busy industrial district stuck to the tavern’s brick exterior. That sticky dust still clings to those walls. The gritty silhouettes of long-gone window shutters linger. Rowe intends to clean and tuckpoint the brickwork. Though the final use of the revitalized building will be up to the owners, GLX Enterprises, Rowe said it likely will be available by lease as a two-level tave See also: decorating brick fireplace dining room decorating ideas photos decoration of bathroom interior decorating small rooms western kitchen decor children wall decorations bass fishing home decor home decor websites stone fireplace decorating ideas |

(8) Paramount Hotel Theater District, Midtown Manhattan The Paramount Hotel was constructed in 1927-28 as part of an extensive building and expansion drive in the Times Square theater district during that period. One of a very few hotels designed by noted theater architect Thomas Lamb, this building’s design reflects the theatrical nature of the neighborhood. New York in the 1920s was a popular tourist destination and this hotel was one of several built in the area that was intended to appeal to visitors coming to New York for its extensive night life. This hotel provided over 600 rooms, restaurants, lounges and a well-known nightclub in the basement. Thomas Lamb designed a large number of theaters in the area, particularly movie houses, giving them a variety of decorative treatments that suggested the fantastical interiors and variety of entertainments provided inside. Lamb was a classically trained architect, able to use a wide-ranging architectural vocabulary geared toward the specific conditions of the building. At the Paramount Hotel he employed flamboyant French Renaissance details, often over-scaled to create a dramatic presence on this smaller, bustling side street. He concentrated his ornament on the lowest levels, visible to passers-by on the street, and on the roofline, visible from a distance or from the windows of nearby buildings. The building displays a double-height arcade along the street, with each arch filled by glass windows allowing a view into the hotel’s activities. The two floors above this are highly embellished by terra-cotta moldings, keystones, volutes and swags, adding a sophisticated note to the streetscape. Toward the top, the building steps back gradually to an imposing central pavilion. The tall mansarded and hipped, copper-covered roof, with its ornate dormers, over-scaled urns and projecting pediments is highly visible from a distance, and stands out from its more reserved neighbors. Throughout the changes to the Times Square neighborhood over the last century, the Paramount Hotel has continued to add its sophisticated presence on this busy commercial street. After years of neglect, the renovation of the hotel in the early 1990s contributed to the renewed popularity of this area as a popular tourist destination. Set on a narrow midtown commercial Manhattan cross street, the Paramount Hotel is 19 stories tall and 12 bays wide. Its brick, stone, and terra cotta facade is capped by a high copper mansard and hipped roof with two stories of projecting dormers. The building has a narrow Hshaped plan, with longer, uninterrupted facades on the north and south and light courts inserted from the east and west sides. The decorative emphasis is focused on the first three stories (those that can easily be seen from the street) and the upper levels that are visible from a distance. The eight stories in between have a fairly regular facade treatment, with evenly spaced windows provided for the hotel rooms inside. Massing: The building rises straight up from the lot line through the 11th story. At the 12th and 13th floor levels, the nine central bays set back several feet. Another setback occurs evenly across the entire facade at the 14th and 15th stories, which effectively continues the central setback, while allowing the two end bays on each side to appear as strong, vertical elements. At the 15th and 16th stories, the four central bays continue to rise in the same plane, while the three bays on each side set back. This central portion rises to a steep, hipped roof, while the roof on each side forms a steep mansard. 46th Street facade: The ground story on West 46th Street features a double-height colonnade, 12 bays wide across the entire front of the building, faced with white marble sitting on a granite base. Recessed shop windows with plain, non-historic glass fill most of the spaces between the columns with individual entrances to various stores. The main hotel entrance is located in the third and fourth arches from the east, with non-historic glass-and-metal doors. Each archway is trimmed by decorative molding and capped by a fully embellished volute flanked by ribbons and topped by a shell. Large, elaborately ornamented bronze frames are mounted on the columns that flank the fifth arch from the west. Within each archway, a mezzanine level is indicated by a tripartite cast-iron base that cuts across the archway, topped by iron-framed, tri-partite windows. The second story is the most elaborately ornamented of the facade. It is separated from the base by a continuous marble string course. Above this is a continuous paneled band that forms a base and continuous sill for the windows. Each plain, rectangular window is surrounded by a broad, eared molding that ends in vertical foliate bands that descend to a volute. The windows are capped by ornately decorated keystones flanked by foliate swags and topped by a shell. Additional foliate swags are located under each window. Between each window B.F. Goodrich Company Building Midtown West, Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States 1780 Broadway was constructed in 1909 as the New York headquarters of the B. F. Goodrich Company, a leading American manufacturer of automobile tires and other rubber products. Since the late 1880s the company had operated a Manhattan office and this project coincided with the company’s reincorporation in New York State. Located in the section of midtown Manhattan that was known as “Automobile Row” during the first decades of the 20th century, Goodrich’s neighbors included the A. T. Demarest and Peerless Motor Companies, as well as the United States Rubber Company. Chicago architect Howard Van Doren Shaw was responsible for the building’s distinctive design and it is one of two extant works by him in New York City. Like many of the two hundred works Shaw built during his career, mostly in the Midwest, it reflects his life-long interest in blending modern and traditional architectural features. Clad with mostly red brick and limestone, the 12story facade is distinguished by abstract, stylized ornament that suggests the influence of Elizabethan and Jacobean sources, the English Arts and Crafts movement, and the Vienna Secession. Goodrich occupied 1780 Broadway for about eighteen years. A tire showroom was located on the ground floor and other floors contained offices and repair facilities. In addition, some space was leased to related firms in the booming automobile industry. Following the sale of the building in 1928, the number of automobile-related tenants began to decline. Although the ground floor was substantially altered by the early 1950s, the upper stories retain most of their original materials and ornament. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS Manhattan’s “Automobile Row” In the last decade of the 19th century, automobiles – then known as “horseless carriages” – were in the earliest stage of development. At first considered novelties, by 1899 approximately three hundred experimental vehicles were in use, built for wealthy drivers by former carriage and bicycle manufacturers. There were several dozen companies by 1907, including the Ford Motor Company, where Henry Ford introduced modern assembly line techniques to lower production costs. According to the New York Times, by 1910 the industry had an annual capacity of 200,000 vehicles. There were 44 American manufacturers by the 1920s, but many other companies had failed, anticipating the industry’s subsequent dominance by a few large firms, concentrated in Michigan. “Automobile Row” took shape in the first decade of the 20th century, pushing north along Broadway from Longacre (later Times) Square, where many horse, harness and carriage businesses had been concentrated. It was a rapid transformation and at the time that Goodrich was contemplating erecting 1780 Broadway, the New York Times observed: “To-day there is almost a solid line of motor vehicle signs” from 42nd Street north to 72nd Street. While some firms purchased or leased space in older, remodeled buildings, others commissioned prominent new structures, often designed by leading American architects. For example, the neo-Gothic A. T. Demarest and Peerless Motor Car Company Buildings (1909, a designated New York City Landmark) at 224-28 West 57th Street were designed by Francis H. Kimball, considered by many to be the father of the skyscraper in New York City; the Beaux-Arts-style United States Rubber Company Building (1911-12, a designated New York City Landmark) at 1790 Broadway was designed by Carerre & Hastings, architect of the New York Public Library on Fifth Avenue, and the Ford Motor Company Building (1917) at 1710 Broadway was designed by Albert Kahn, architect of numerous structures for the automotive industry and other commercial clients. These highly-visible buildings were typically planned with spacious showrooms and offices for the owner, as well as with additional floors to rent to other, often automobile-related, businesses. The Automobile Club of America erected two garage and clubhouse structures in the immediate area: 247-59 West 54th Street (1907, refaced) and 250 West 55th Street (1910, demolished). Both were designed in the French Renaissance style by Ernest Flagg. The B. F. Goodrich Company By 1888, the Goodrich Hard Rubber Company had opened a New York City office, at 65 Reade Street in lower Manhattan. Based in Akron, Ohio, it was founded by Benjamin Franklin Goodrich in 1870 and grew to be one of the largest producers of rubber products, especially tires, in the world. Raised in upstate New York, Goodrich studied medicine but during the late 1860s entered the rubber industry, investing in the Hudson River Rubber Company, which operated a factory in Hastings-on-the-Hudson, as well as a Manhattan office. Though the company struggled, when Goodrich relocated to Akron he was well-prepared to launch a similar partnership with his brother-in-law, Harvey W. Tew, named Goodrich, Tew & Company. (13) 141. Visit a farm The day of the wedding reception. Tried to wake up early but failed and ended up waking up about a half hour before we had to head out. The place they had the reception was amazing. settlespoint.com <- Im putting that more for me than for u :) It was someones house which blew my mind cause this place is HUGE and just plain breath taking. The first think I noticed tho was there were cows in the back! Cows! So I dragged mama out there so I could go take pictures. There were 2 cows, one older one younger and a bull, he looked pretty young. I got some good pictures, its something Iv been wanting to do. Now I just have to get some long horn shots and then Ill be pretty darn happy for a while lol. I want to get a cow. I asked mom if I could get a cow and she said "You dont live with me anymore, you can get a monkey if you want." and I replied "Great answer mom." But Ryan said no cow, hes no fun lol. Mom and I went to subway and she ended up giving me some anxiety pill that made me really tired and just didnt affect me quite right so I ended up going to sleep in the back seat while I went...some where... with Cody and Chad, and I got yelled at a lot for not taking pictures of them setting up but I had left the camera with mom. When I went back in the place looked great, it was around 3 I think. So I went in and started taking pictures and got ready. While I was getting ready I found a tiny little lizard skeleton! Its so awesome, I kept it lol I know Im weird. After awhile people started to show up. It was a tad awkward at first but I just kept taking pictures. It took forever but I eventually found someone to give me the address of the place for Ryan lol I had to ask soo many people. I was so happy when he showed up :) it had been days.. like 2 I think, since I had seen him but it was far too long lol. He met my mom and step dad and had his 2nd, n far better, meeting with Kat n Cody. I cant remember what we did before food but we ate, I tried Shawns vegan food, it was pretty good but Ryans garlic potatoes were better lol I stole from his plate thats what made them his. We ended up making friends with Kats god kids, mainly Elizabeth. We ran around and played with them a lot, pushed them on the big tire swings, I danced with them. It was fun, they really helped me feel more comfortable. I always make friends with the kids. And so does Ryan, thats something I really like about him. I like to run around and laugh and play, who needs to be an stuffy adult and sit and conversate and drink, borrrriingggg lol. They were fun kids. The maid of honors 2 little girls were awfully cute too but they didnt really warm up to me. Elizabeth called Ryan Zombie dude lol. She let me take a million pictures of her and posed for me everytime. And Ryan gave me his agents card so now Im gonna know a model and an actor lol I told Elizabeth to come to me when she wanted pictures done, Ill make her a portfolio :) I was talkin to Ryan about how when he becomes famous he would probably trade me in, cause Im way too much of a klutz to be good arm candy but he can come to me for pictures too :P lol. I got their mom, Sheree's, number so we could all hang out again :) Music started, Shawn was the dj. Kat and Cody had their first dance and I was holding back tears the hold time. Not only because my brother was dancing at all but because hes married, because hes come so far and Im happy for him. We have our differences like every family does but he raised me and I love him so much and Im always gonna be by his side, through it all, cause thats what family does. I took a few pictures of everyone dancing before Elizabeth pulled me out on the floor, Ryan wouldnt dance with us. But later in the night we went into the other room and we danced to Bohemian Rhapsody while he sang :) Gosh hes the best, the very best, I wouldnt trade him for the world. I was dancing around most of the night, I guess you could call it the wedding high but it was fun lol. The cake was good. The wedding cake was pretty traditional 3 teir cake. Codys grooms cake was a ps3 :) pretty rad. Ellen decorated the cakes. The ps3 cake was chocolate and definatly my favorite. Kat tossed the buquet, one of her friends caught it. Cody tossed the garder but Ryan refused to participate lol I guess he was afraid hed catch it and end up stuck with me lol just like the napkins said Eat Drink and Be Married and he says "but I dont wanna be married." like jeez Ryan :P lol. People started to leave, others started to clean up, by then my side of the family was pretty drunk. They had a special purple drink there and Cody said he had 6 drinks lol and mom was pretty toasted and Chad drank like half the keg. They were all gonna go back to the hotel for a while so Ryan and I went back to the house in Cove. I had picked up my Cake and Sublime CD so we listened to that, he didnt know Stickshifts and Safetlybelts or Sad songs and Waltzes! It was so nice spending time wi Tagged! You Got Me! I was tagged by lOuOs, vintagemimosa, and Nomoir. You got me! So, here are 25 (twenty five?!!) things about me: 1. The butterfly and the dragon are my Sacred Power Animals; 2. I am addicted to tea and green tea; 3. I had the most wonderful childhood filled with love, unconditional love, care, hugs, laughter, respect, fun, joy, friendship, creativity, and encouragement from my late, oh so loved parents and maternal grandparents and my sister, who is still and always will be my bestest most treasured palereeno. A true Grace was bestowed upon me when I was born to be with these people; 4. I am very open person. I wish I could be more secretive. I love the TV show, Amazing Grace. In one of the ads for the show, the character Grace says, “I want to be the mystery in the room.” Well, so do I. But, sadly, I am not. Sigh…; 5. I love fashion, fashion, fashion. A dear friend of mine nicknamed me Marsha de la M. Ha! 6. I love to speak in public and have no fear at all, but hate to perform in public. I love to dance by myself for hours; 7. I abhor any kind of animal testing or animal abuse. I am an active animal rights worker, totally non violent. I am working to eliminate any kind of animal testing on any animal forever, as well as working to stop animal abuse; 8. I can open one of those big jars of pickles on the first turn. I once worked for a company and two men in my department doubted me and challenged me to do just that in a contest with them! They didn’t believe I could do it due to my size (I am 5’10” and 118lbs). So, the three of us had a face off contest. Each of us was given 5 new unopened big pickle jars. When the head of our department said go, I opened my jars, one right after the other, in about 6-7 seconds. The two big “strong” men could only open three each…slowly. So, I opened both of their two remaining pickle jars for them; 9. I will not abide any injustice of any kind. As several of my heroes (MLK, A. Lincoln, Elie Wiesel, and Gandhi) said in their own words, and I agree, no injustice is too small to be ignored, not acknowledged or attempts made to rectify it; 10. I am very affected by my surroundings; 11. I love morning. I love to watch and feel everything in nature waking up and greeting the new day...so happy to be alive; 12. I love the rain, fog, myste, woods, and the smell of freshly mowed grass, worms, and the dark rich soil of Connecticut; 13. I hate wool. I cannot wear it or even look at it without itching. I love silk, satin, and cotton; 14. I am teaching myself the harmonica. I was never successful with wind instruments, so, this should be an interesting experience. My goal is to one day play, “Like a Rolling Stone”; 15. I have a rich deep and vivid imagination, a great sense of humor, am a vegetarian, love purple, and have no patience; 16. My late dearly loved Grandfather loved cartography. He, my sister, and I would sit together for hours in his private library with maps spread out in front of us. He would teach us about reading maps, but the real magic, enchantment, joy, and specialness of those times together were more than the maps. In fact, they had little to do with them. My Grandfather would tell us all about his life, his time with his parents, his photography his youth, how he met and fell in love with our beloved Grandmother, about our treasured Mother when she was little, and all that kind of wondrous stuff. I can still smell his special blend of pipe tobacco with a note of cherry; 17. I love all things French. Miss Paris. Plan to live in France forever; 18. Sailing and boating are “big” in my family. I hate it. I hate being out on the open ocean far from land. I have always had a horrible fear or terror of sharks. Plus, that endless ocean stretching for miles and miles in all directions is horrifying. But, I do love the beach and could spend all day walking, running, playing, looking for shells, etc. in the rain or shine; 19. I love stuff: jewelry, dolls, miniatures, books, pens, antiques, silver, boxes, ink, seals, wax, toys, stuffed animals, shoes, miniatures … and lots more. My list goes on and on. My sister calls me a crow because I am attracted to shiny things; 20. I believe in Universal Law; 21. I love to swim naked; 22. I love to garden and have created a beautiful backyard out of the nightmare that existed when we bought the house. It is not finished, but it never will be. That is the wonderful thing about gardening. It goes on forever and is constantly changing. To me, my backyard feels like the Enchanted Woods or an enchanted garden. Plus, within it are so many treasured memories of my Cody; 23. I hate to cook and never ever do. I have never made a pie in my life and never will. I consider my kitchen a place to decorate and make tea; 24. I love knowledge and can’t get enough fast enough. The deeper the subject matter, the greater my interest. I love to read real books and can’t read fast enough. I realize I will not be able to read See also: outdoors christmas decorations high end nursery decor cheap primitive home decor decorating french country zebra kitchen decor first birthday high chair decorations house decoration design |

Part of Decorations > Cutouts (17) (Former) New York Times Building Park Row This sixteen-story office building, constructed as the home of the New York Times, is one of the last survivors of Newspaper Row, the center of newspaper publishing in New York City from the 1830s to the 1920s. Erected in 1888-89 and enlarged in 1903-05, the present building was the paper's second on the site and was so identified with the Times that it was described in King's Handbook of New York (1892) as "the Times expressed in stone." The former Times Building is the sole remaining office building in the downtown area by the pioneering skyscraper designer George B. Post. Post, the country's pre-eminent -architect-engineer, achieved a major technological feat with this commission which required him to incorporate the floor framing from the Times's five-story 1857 building so newspaper operations could continue on site while the new building was under construction. The Times Building, Post's first in the Richardsonian Romanesque idiom, was considered "a masterpiece of the Romanesque style." Faced with rusticated Indiana limestone blocks above a gray Maille granite base, the facades are articulated in a colmplex' composition featuring a series of impressive arcades that emphasize the verticality of the building and horizontal moldings that call attention to the underlying structure. The carefully-scaled details .include compound colonnettes, roll mOldings, miniature palllStrades, •foliate reliefs, gargoyles and a mansard with gabled dormers. In 1904, the Times, which had been sold to Adolph Ochs, relocated to Times Square•The former ground-floor offices of the Times were. converted toc retail use, the mansard was taken down, and four stories were added to ..the designs of Robert Maynicke. Pace University acquired the building in 1951 for part of its Manhattan campus, converting the offices to classrooms and making changes to the base. With its three highly visible facades on Park Row, Nassau Street, and Spruce Street facing Printing House Square, the former New York Times Building remains a prominent presence in New York's civic center. The former New York Times Building is located difficult engineering problems. on a trapezoidal lot which extends 103 feet along Park Row, sixty feet along Spruce Street, ninety-six feet along Nassau Street, and is 104 feet wide at its south party wall adjoining the Potter Building. The sixteen-story building has a Romanesque Revival design featuring rusticated stone work, a series of mUlti-story arcades, and finely carved medieval ornament. The building's two-story base is faced with gray Maine granite, while Indiana limestone is employed for the third through fourteenth stories and terra cotta for the top two stories. Tall arcades, prominent piers, and recessed windows and spandrels give the design a vertical emphasis. The facades are organized into three bays on Spruce Street and four bays on Park Row and Nassau Street. The north front on Spruce Street (Printing House Square) which originally contained the entrance to the Tunes publication offices is treated as the primary facade. The articulation of the Spruce Street facade is extended on to the narrow bays at the north end of the Nassau and Park Row facades. The original stone entrance surrounds on Spruce Street and Park Row were removed and new entrances and first story windows were installed in the I 950s when Pace University acquired the building. The original cast-iron spandrel panels still survive in the window bays but non-historic aluminum windows were installed on all three facades in the 1980s. A number of air conditioners and louvers have been installed in the windows of the Park Row and Nassau Street facades. Street facade Base: The Spruce Street facade is divided into six major story groupings which are defined by string courses that extend over the piers. The two-story base is articulated with rusticated pilasters resting on plain bases. The original stone Romanesque arched entrance porch has been removed from the center bay and the original projecting tripartite bay windows with double-hung sash and transoms, iron spandrel panels and tripartite sash windows have been replaced. Currently the multipane aluminum first-story windows rest on masonry bulkheads which are coated with a stucco facing which has also been applied to the base of the piers. The aluminum windows are lower than the original windows and the spandrel panels are wider (probably to accommodate dropped ceilings). The second story has non-historic windows in place of the original one-over-one wood sash. Mid-section: Above the base is a three-story section comprised of a giant double-story arcade topped by a single story of coupled round arches. Miniature balustrades extend along the bottom of the large arches which are also enriched with corner coloUDettes, foliate capitals, and molded archivolts. Each large arch originally contained three window bays. The spandrel panels are articulated with The Falls Hotel, Ennistymon, County Clare, Ireland Nestled in it’s wooded vale beside the tumbling waters of the River Inagh, the distinctive building known today as the Falls Hotel Spa Resort conceals within it’s walls an eighteenth century mansion, a late medieval castle, and a formidable history of four and a half centuries embracing clans and warfare, landlords and tenants, poets, dreamers and entrepreneurs. The O Briens In 1712 the farm of "Inishtymond" was granted to a John O’Brien of Dublin, who was probably acting on behalf of his relative Christopher O’Brien. Christopher O’Brien died in 1743 and was succeeded by his eldest surviving son, Edward. Then, in 1764, Edward demolished much of the old castle building. The new structure, Ennistymon House, was a Georgian-style building with large sash windows, fine panelling and rococo decoration inside. The Finucanes In 1792 the house passed to Ann O’Brien and her husband Matthias Finucane. A year later, Ann was divorced by her husband by a special Act of Parliament; but since she was held to be the guilty party Ennistymon House remained in the Finucane family. The Finucanes resided here in the early 1800’s. The Macnamaras On the death, without lawful heirs, of Andrew Finucane in 1843, the house passed to his brother-in-law William Nugent Macnamara of Doolin, who had in 1798 married Susannah Finucane, who was in turn a grand-daughter of Edward O’Brien, formerly of the same house. Francis ("The Colonel") Macnamara, only son and heir of William Nugent, married Helen McDermott in 1860 of Dublin and they lived variously between London and Ennis until July 1863 when they made Ennistymon House their permanent home. In the same year they added a west wing to the house to accommodate guests who came to enjoy - among other things - good shooting and fishing. Francis Macnamara Jnr, grandson of The Colonel, could justifiably be considered the most colourful of his clan (his daughter Nicolette Devas wrote of him in her autobiography Two Flamboyant Fathers). And it was he who was responsible for turning Ennistymon House into a commercial property for the first time. Another of his daughters, Caitlin married Welsh Poet Dylan Thomas, both of whom lived in the house during the first two years of their marriage. Francis’ marriage to Yvonne fell asunder and in 1928 he married again, this time to Augustus John’s sister-in-law, Edie McNeil. At this time he was dividing his time between London and Ennistymon, where he planned to turn the family home into a country hotel. After Edie died, Francis took a third wife, this time Iris O’Callaghan-Westropp of O’Callaghan’s Mills. That was 1936. He was then fifty-two years of age, some thirty years her senior, and shortly after they both returned to Ennistymon House which they soon after opened to the public as the Falls Hotel. Towards the end of the 1930’s, Francis leased the hotel for five years to Brendan O’Regan, who later pioneered catering and sales services at Shannon International Airport. O’Regan ran the hotel during the years of World War Two, and one of his innovations was to supply hot meals in hayboxes to the golfers at Lahinch! At the end of the O’Regan lease, Francis took the decision to sell the hotel, thus ending a connection which stretched back -almost unbroken- to the original O’Brien’s of Ennistymon Castle some four hundred years previous. Ownership From 1942 - 1986 The new owner of the Falls Hotel was a retired Welshman called Gerard Henry Williams-Owen. He and his family operated during the summer months only. In 1955 John F. Wood and his wife Bridget acquired the hotel. They added the hydro-electric plant which for many years provided power to the building, and the ‘plant’ can still be seen a short distance upstream, just below the cascades. The Mc Carthys The current owners of the Falls Hotel are Dan and Eileen McCarthy (since 1986). Under their stewardship, the hotel has been greatly extended and improved, and now boasts 140 bedrooms, a restaurant and bar, a 400 seat Conference/Banqueting Room, a leisure club, a highly equipped gymnasium and the 12 treatment room River Spa. medieval party decoration Steps for re-creating an accurate medieval celebration Ideas for activities at Christmas, Easter, weddings, and parties In this handy guide, medieval historians Daniel Diehl and Mark Donnelly provide ideas and instructions for planning an authentic medieval celebration, complete with guidelines on proper table manners, lyrics and music for festive songs and dances, rules for games, plans for decorating the dining hall, food and drink recipes, and period costume patterns. (10) Red Dragon Village in Tehama March 2007 The Red Dragon Village was the first place I accidentally landed in after flying too far during the flying lesson at Orientation Island, and then I had no idea how to get back, so I never finished all the lessons there. The Red Dragon Village in Tehama was one of the early builds of SL, going back to 2003, and beautifully designed by its owner and creator, Snakekiss Noir. Besides her own home on the hill above the village, there is a store where she sells furniture, rugs, ceramics, screens, and art prints...many of the items created by her. The village centers around a traditional outdoor marketplace with the voices and sounds of an actual market. To each side of the market are small buildings which those who don't own land in SL can rent at a very low cost. The land around the village, including a large park is nicely landscaped. From your rental you can hear the sounds of birds and insects, and the occasional ring of Japanese chimes. The stream plays very traditional Japanese music. Snakekiss has information cards at various points around the village which are quite helpful to someone new to SL. Here is what she wrote in a notecard about the Red Dragon Village: "Red Dragon Village was my pilot project for a Japanese new starter living community. I have spent nearly 3 years since 2003 making Tehama into a mostly Japanese-themed garden sim with a peaceful and much liked tranquil atmosphere and natural scenery, with profusion of trees, plants, bushes, flowers and plants by SL's top plant makers. We have forests, waterfalls, bridges and lakes and a variety of garden and land types and are proudly a SL Parks & Rec Service Member and chosen SL Parks Garden." "Tehama is a peaceful, pleasant sim. We have no large high builds apart from the Tower and a splendid old castle, and no clubs, malls, huge signs, noisy or visually disturbing builds and a sense of tranquil integration where the whole sim almost looks like one large lovely garden." "The only sounds you will hear are birds, insects, water and the occasional eastern or pleasant style radio stream on my lands. This is the home of Neo Japan Gardens, Neo Japan Store and Red Dragon Market and a haven for all those into the Japanese, Chinese, or eastern influenced life. You can buy most eastern items here, and also find many quiet places to sit, think and plan your SL projects." "Red Dragon Village has been extended twice and now offers 10 small, but stylish Neo Japanese town house units which are designed to make a close and welcoming community situated in a well landscaped sim. They are ideal for artists, those interested in Japanese living, or anyone wanting a peaceful sim to live in that won't ever end up with a nightclub or shopping Mall next door, well not on my land anyway. Many people have started their SL homes here in these VERY cheap rental houses, and then moved on to land, or to larger rentals or with friends." "You can create furniture here, and art, and add plants and pots and tubs, and decor items to personalize your home. You can stay as long as you want until you are ready to move home and maybe get a land plot, or larger house, or rental. Each house comes with some essential starter possessions from Neo Japan Store, a free modifiable futon bed, seats ..and other items if requested. " , Because I knew nothing about the rest of SL at this point, at first I just used this village as my home base to explore out from. The rental houses were very popular, so it was very hard to find one free, but I kept my eye open, and finally found one in mid-March 2007. Update: After renting a house in Red Dragon Village for almost a year, sometime around Feb 2008, Snakekiss Noir sent notice to all the renters that she was forced to sell the land this village sits on, due to rising costs, and other problems, so the village completely disappeared from SL by the first of March 2008. She still retained another build of hers..the snowy Japanese village of Silk Waters mountain, located in Orelle, and parts of the Verbier, and Ayas sims, and being the very thoughtful, kind, and generous landlord that she is, she did help find, or create rentals for those loyal long-time residents of Red Dragon Village who were losing their homes, and were interested in moving to Silk Water's Mountain. Music Fire Escape This building is in the Paradise Valley area of Detroit. I like fire escapes and when me and my best friend were out shooting and we walked by this, I had to get a picture of it. I liked that the Music part of the Music Hall sign was on the left. If I remember correctly, a new business had a sign in the window that it was opening soon, but I don't remember what it was. music themed home decor WatchBuddy Wall Clocks are the World's Most Lovable Theme Clocks - combining beauty and functionality, they are a wonderful home wall decor accent. I want to put another curtain across the lower half of the window, something that doesn't block the light but does block the view in, so I can do things like change clothes in my bedroom without feeling so...exposed. (There is another apartment building about 10 feet away.) Bedroom curtains Eh. I know they got blown out. But the curtains I made for our room are from a white-on-white dupioni silk and really turned out pretty. I like the blue and white with the light tan. The tray ceiling really looks cool, thanks to Kimberly.
