Born on a Bayou...
My babies grew up on the river. Herons and beavers were their neighbors, they ate crawfish and wore lifejackets whenever they left the house. They were piloting their own little boats before they were riding bikes.
Now they're out on their own, and they'll drive through the night, rather than spend an evening under my roof.
But back in the 90s, we vacationed in close quarters for days--everyone harmonious and happily passing the time playing board games and doing art projects. Our faithful dog Sadie was their constant companion and faithful guardian--even driving away any black angus cattle that came too close to our Airstream campsite.
One of my current chores is gearing up the Airstream for some fresh adventures. The stuff stashed in the place is like a toddler-time capsule--Thomas the Tank Engine puzzles and Fisher-Price binoculars and flashlights--how ironic that the little "toy" flashlight still works (with fresh batteries)--and the big 5-cell MagLite seems to have bought the farm (corrosion?)
When those little birds leave the nest, you never know where their flight will take them. But they'll always remember the tree they launched from, and when they smell that river smell--wherever they are--part of them will be home. Home
