USS Iowa (BB-61) 2011-10-27 014

Two of the several ships we crossed to access the Iowa. BB-61's boarding ramp was already stowed for the tow. Look close between ships and you see the bridges we'll cross under. We are totally at the mercy of the high water; there are rare "High High Tides" today and tomorrow only that will allow the battleship to clear a 'shoal'... a huge underwater sandbar; fail to cross now and it would be 2 years awaiting the right conditions!

Golden Haug

Golden Haug

We stayed at a cute - if somewhat eccentric - bed and breakfast in Iowa City called the Golden Haug, where all the rooms have pig themes like "Swine and Roses" or "Sir Francis Bacon". Kitschy, but you can't beat the location - right next to a used bookstore and a vegetarian restaurant.

Dear God, what a dinner. Went to Jamie's Italian in Brighton. This is just the bread. I had a one of the specials, that was a pork-herby-pine nut thing. It was fantastic. Also, I know the head chef and he gave us a discount. Good guy.

I went with a friend to talk about holiday options, and by the end of the evening we'd booked flights and hotels for 4 days in Budapest at the end of March. So if I keep up this 365 project until then, the pictures might suddenly become interesting!

Clondalkin is a suburb situated 10 km west of Dublin City, Ireland, in the administrative county of South Dublin. The name is also used in relation to the area's religious parishes.

Clondalkin is home to an eighth-century round tower that acts as a focal point for the area. Acknowledged as one of the oldest and best preserved in the country (despite numerous storms and an explosion which destroyed the local mill in 1856), it is 25.6 metres high and has its original conical cap.

Clondalkin is served by public transport to Dublin city centre, to nearby suburbs, and to neighbouring towns.

Dublin Bus provide bus routes including the 51b, 51c, 68, 69, 76, 78a and 151. Many of these run from areas near Clondalkin, such as Rathcoole, into the city centre via Clondalkin. Some services, such as the 210, do not service the city centre.

The Luas Red Line runs from the Red Cow Roundabout park and ride station providing links to the town square in Tallaght and Dublin City Centre. However, the Luas station is approximately half an hour's walk from Clondalkin village.

Clondalkin railway station opened on 4 August 1846 and was closed for goods traffic on 9 June 1947. Commuter trains are operated by Iarnrod Eireann (Irish Rail) and run between Heuston station in Dublin and Kildare Town in County Kildare. A new station, to replace rather than supplement the previous station, has been built at Fonthill, north of Bawnogue.

Bus Eireann services stop to collect and set down passengers at Newlands Cross, on the N7 road near Clondalkin. These services have destinations all over the west and south of the country.

Snapshot: Norma Talmadge At The Fairmont Hotel, San Francisco

Snapshot: Norma Talmadge At The Fairmont Hotel, San Francisco

I bought this big old box of photos at Brimfield---it must have a thousand or more photos in it. I started looking through it to take out what I wanted and only pay for that, but I hadn't got very far before I realized I would be paying more individually, and spending more time, than if I just took the whole box. The dealer was asking $75, but he said he would take $50. How about $45, I said. No, he had to have $50. So I gave him the $50. Since I didn't want to be stuck carrying around a big box of photos, I took it back to my car, which was at another field across the highway, maybe 1/2 a mile. I hadn't even got to my car before some fellow came up to me and said "That's a lot of photos you got there," and without invitation started poking through it. He grabbed some post cards that were mixed in with the photos. Soon enough he had eleven postcards. "I'll give you $4 for these," he said. I told him I had to have $5. Grumbling, he gave me the $5. I'm sure the postcards were worth more than he paid. Who knows, maybe they were worth a lot more. I don't like postcards, and would find it an imposition on my time to do the research to find out what they were worth. Anyway, that was fun.
I searched through this box maybe three times before I turned this photo over and saw written on the back, "Fairmont Hotel San Francisco picture of Norma Talmadge 1924" Of course, not a lot of people know who Norma Talmadge was now---in 1924 (Wikipedia knowledge) she was at the heighth of her fame---Angelina Jolie territory, I guess. She was the biggest silent picture star whose career did not translate to the talkies. However, she had invested wisely, and was set for life. Wikipedia has this little anecdote: "Once leaving the movie world, Norma Talmadge rid herself of all the duties and responsibilities of stardom. She sweetly told eager fans who were pressing her for an autograph as she left a restaurant, 'Get away, dears. I don't need you anymore.''"
I kind of like that, to be honest.
In her honor, I'm inaugurating a new set, "Accidental Celebrity Gallery."
Since I don't go out looking for pictures of celebrities, the members of this set are random. They just happen along in the ordinary course of things. It's really more fun that way. This photo is among the best, because I didn't even know it was a celebrity until I read the back.

Catania, Dom Sant'Agata, Kreuzkapelle

Catania, Dom Sant'Agata, Kreuzkapelle

24 Unsolved Bristol Murders

24 Unsolved Bristol Murders

Police determined to crack 24 unsolved Bristol murders

While the discovery of Melanie Hall's body has kick-started the quest to find her killer, detectives say they are as determined as ever to crack the 23 other unsolved murders in the Bristol area.

Little did they know, a few days later one of the most high-profile mysteries was about to be blown wide open by the discovery of Melanie Hall's body yards from the M5, near Thornbury.

DCI Carter said last night: "These cases are never closed until they are solved.

"For the last nine months the team have been working very hard on finding out what we have and where we are with 24 of the murder cases."

Mr Carter took over the team last November. They have been trawling through thousands of documents, papers and exhibits in a bid to crack the cases and find out whether new technology – particularly DNA – can be used to make progress.

"This has been a huge task," Mr Carter added. "We have 49 boxes of exhibits and files for the case of Melanie Road (who was killed in Bath in 1984).

"I was really pleased with the professional approach of my team, the work they put in and the information they could provide.

"I am satisfied now that if a victim's family came to me now I would be able to say what we've done and what we are doing. The families and the victims have not been forgotten."

In a bid to keep the crimes in the public psyche, Mr Carter said the team will publicise the cases on their anniversaries from now on.

There are 27 unsolved murder cases in the force area, 23 of which – with 24 victims – are linked to greater Bristol.

The oldest is that of Robert Parrington-Jackson, 32, who was shot dead as he worked in the office at Odeon Cinema in Union Street on May 29, 1946.

Although officially unsolved, in 1993 – and again last month – the son of the alleged killer named him as Billy "The Fish" Fisher, a petty crook from South Wales who travelled with an accomplice to rob the cinema. He admitted, on his death bed in 1989, shooting Mr Parrington-Jackson with a Colt 45.

The most recent unsolved murder is that of Dean Jeffery, who died on September 28, 2006, after he was assaulted in the Ridgeway Parade area of Fishponds a week earlier. Despite a reconstruction and continued appeals, his killer, or killers, have not been found.

Mr Jeffery's case was not part of the recent review as it is still with the Major Investigation Team.

The MCRT was set up in February 2003 to revisit historical crimes.

There have been numerous successes in cracking cases, in particular "stranger rapes", and so far 12 offenders have been jailed using DNA technology.

The latest conviction was that of Vincent Dally, 29, of Bowring Close, Hartcliffe, who was jailed last month for attempted rape, 14 years after attacking a 39-year-old woman in Hartcliffe.

In an interview with the Post earlier this year, head of CID Louisa Rolfe said: "Some cases are very, very challenging. If you can't get to the bottom of the case it's really frustrating for everyone involved. But we never let go of these cases."

Since Melanie Hall's body was found, her murder has become a "live" case. Forensic examinations are still being carried out.

If you have any information, call police on 0845 4567000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

The unsolved Bristol murders in full:

Robert Parrington-Jackson May 29, 1946

The 32-year-old was shot in the head with a Colt 45 while working in the office at Odeon Cinema in Union Street.

Although officially "unsolved", in 1993 the son of the killer had finally named him. Billy "The Fish" Fisher, a petty crook from South Wales who travelled with an accomplice to rob the cinema, admitted, on his death bed in 1989, panicking and shooting him twice.

George Black January 7, 1949

Married 52-year-old George, from Clifton, was killed during a robbery at Lloyds bank, Wells Road, Knowle. A man in a trilby shot Mr Black dead, then disappeared. Mr Black was in charge and struggled with the robber and was shot twice.

Carrying a briefcase full of money, the killer left the bank, got into an Austin Saloon which had been stolen that morning, and drove off.

June and Royston Sheasby July 1, 1957

The siblings went missing while playing in Snuff Mills Park on a warm evening in June.

A massive hunt for them by emergency services and thousands of volunteers took place. But 11 days later, any hopes of finding the brother and sister alive were shattered by the shrill blast of a police whistle.

Their bodies were later found in a shallow grave within the park.

They had been battered to death – possibly with a stone.

Louise Jane Dunne June 28, 1967

The 74-year-old, from Easton, was raped and strangled in her own home in Britannia Road. Friend Vi Allene noticed a window slightly open and climbed through, finding her prostrate body lying on the floor.

Death rattle of Bristol's port

Death rattle of Bristol's port

Phew, what a scorcher! Another day of the 1975 summer's grilling, inescapable heat. On Sunday 3rd August Filton, Bristol, and Finningley, near Doncaster, were jointly the hottest places in Britain, each notching up 90°F. This was no discouragement to your wilting photographer who, more "uptight" in youth than in his middle age, never ventured out of doors without a jacket and regarded even a short-sleeved shirt as a form of undress. After several hours of pounding the hot pavements I remember the sheer agony of standing in Lamb Street, St Jude's, waiting for a bus to take me home. This being a Sunday the service, of course, operated at a reduced frequency. Indoors there was no relief. My room faced west and caught the afternoon sun. Looking down to read, beads of sweat formed on my brow, combined, ran down my nose and dropped onto the page ...the first time I had even known this to happen.
I had started my expedition at Bathurst Basin. Huge gulls swooped at my head from the roof of the derelict Turner Edwards warehouse, where they must have had a nest. The "sand boats" operated by the Holms Sand & Gravel Co. were the last shipping to use the basin. The firm moved to a wharf opposite Welsh Back, then to Hotwells, before abandoning the city docks altogether in the early 90s. The boarded-up houses in Bathurst Parade were reprieved and survived to be renovated, gentrified and painted in preposterous pastel colours. The pub at the left-hand end of the terrace was still called the Bathurst Hotel. For a while, having a wrought iron balcony, it was renamed "The Louisiana". A little later, following renovation of the houses, the Parade was paved with setts and furnished with spurious quayside impedimenta. It looked rather as though it were being made ready for use as a backdrop in some TV adaptation of Jane Austen, or a hard-hitting drama about the slave trade. The pub was again renamed, this time as "The Smugglers". How one longs for simple authenticity in the appearance of one's surroundings.

Parisian Weekend

Parisian Weekend

Have landed safely in Paris and am enjoying a slow Sunday morning at a nearby cafe. Took advice from friends and am staying at hotel near the center if Paris.
It's a bit cold, but not as bad as I was expecting and no snow falling (yet). Language will certainly be my biggest challenge as I am hopeless in that area. Luckily I have great friends I'll e spending most of my time with.
Very happy to have Internet access for my iPhone and iPad via an Orange Pocket wifi courtesy of @Cedric. This makes it easy for me to get around and stay in touch.
Was pleasantly surprised by entering customs at Charles de Gaulle airport. No silly forms or invasive bag checks. Pretty much just showed my passport and "Welcome to France".
Will be checking out some sights today and meeting up with friends for dinner. Can't shake the overwhelming presence of rich culture and history here. It's pretty overwhelming. More reports to come.

If you are curious about anything I am taking about or about my purpose here, leave a note in the comments and will try to respond.

La Fontaine Saint-Michel

La Fontaine Saint-Michel

It was certainly hard to leave Portugal, but it was time to fly back to Paris for the last two days of the trip. We stayed at a hotel near the airport (to catch an early flight), but there was still time to take the train into Paris for one last day. This is the view near the Metro stop in the Latin Quarter, which is where most of that day was spent. I loved the way the light looked on the statue, so I took some pictures. This is the best of them. I did a tiny bit of retouching of some marks on the statue, but apart from that, this is just as it came out of the camera. So the end of the trip came too fast, but I have many, many photos and lots of great memories.

Hotel del Coronado

Hotel del Coronado

An American Treasure in the Heart of Southern California
The History of The Hotel del Coronado
As a National Historic Landmark, the Hotel del Coronado has a rich and colorful heritage that sets it apart from neighboring Coronado hotels. From Marilyn Monroe to Charles Lindbergh, from state dinners to the ghost of Kate Morgan, The Del is an American treasure with more than 120 years of fascinating stories to tell. Today, we invite you to create new great memories at this cherished hotel in Coronado.

BABCOCK & STORY
The Del's visionary founders - Elisha Babcock and H.L. Story - dreamed of building a seaside resort that would be "the talk of the Western world." Since then, the resort has become a living legend, visited by celebrities, dignitaries and U.S. presidents. In fact, publisher Rand McNally recognized the Hotel del Coronado for enjoying "more fame and historical significance than perhaps any hotel in North America."

PRESIDENTS & PRINCES
Eleven U.S. Presidents have visited The Del, starting with Benjamin Harrison in 1891. One of the resort's most famous visitors was England's Prince of Wales in 1920. He would later become King Edward VIII, only to give up his throne in 1936 to marry Coronado divorcee Wallis Spencer Simpson. Many have speculated that they may have first met at The Del.

AMERICAN LEGENDS
The Del has played host to some of America's greats, including Thomas Edison, L. Frank Baum and Babe Ruth. Famed aviator Charles Lindbergh was honored at The Del in 1927 after his successful trans-Atlantic flight. At this lavish banquet, a replica of Lindbergh's "Spirit of St. Louis" circled the enormous Crown Room ceiling.

HOLLYWOOD CONNECTION
Hollywood has been making movies at The Del since 1901. In 1958, The Del was the backdrop for the comedy classic "Some Like It Hot," starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. The resort has also seen a steady stream of celebrity visitors - from Charlie Chaplin and Humphrey Bogart to Brad Pitt and Madonna.

Windsor

Windsor

The Windsor Plantation at one time covered 2,600 acres (11 km?). Smith Coffee Daniell II, who was born in Mississippi in 1826, the son of an Indian fighter turned farmer and landowner, constructed the mansion itself in 1859-1861. In 1849 he married his cousin Catherine Freeland (1830-1903) by whom he had three children.

Basic construction of the house, which was designed by David Shroder (Shroder also designed and built Rosswood, which is located in Lorman) was done by slave labor. The bricks for use in the 45 foot columns were made in a kiln across the road from the house. The columns were then covered with mortar and plaster. There were 29 of these columns supporting the projecting roof line with its plain, broad frieze and molded cornice. This provided protection for the galleries that encompassed the house at the second and third levels. The fluted columns had iron Corinthian capitals and were joined at the galleries by an ornamental iron balustrade.

Skilled carpenters were brought in from New England for the finished woodwork and the iron stairs, column capitals and balustrades were manufactured in St. Louis and shipped down the Mississippi River to the Port of Bruinsburg several miles west of Windsor.

The mansion cost about $175,000.00 (this would be about 3.5 million dollars today) to build and was completed in 1861. However Smith Daniell lived in the home only a few weeks before he died at the age of 34.

When completed, the home contained over 25 rooms, each with its own fireplace and, among other innovations, featured interior baths supplied with water from a tank in the attic.

On the Main floor, flanking the broad hall, were the master bedroom, a bath, 2 parlors, a study and the library. In the ell off this part of the structure was located the dining room. Directly below in the above ground basement was the kitchen, with the two connected by a dumbwaiter. Also in this basement were a school room, an on-site dairy, several storage rooms, a commissary and a doctor's office.

On the third floor were an additional bath and 9 more bedrooms, each with their own fireplace.

Above the smaller 4th floor (which had a ballroom, but was never finished) there was a roof-top observatory.

During the American Civil War, the home was used by both Union and Confederate troops.

Confederate forces used the roof observatory as an observation platform and signal station. After the capture of the area by Union forces, the mansion was used as a hospital following the Battle of Port Gibson and as an observation station.

The home survived the war and continued to be used for social gatherings in the area. Mark Twain stayed at the home and is said to have used the roof observatory to observe the Mississippi River.

On 17 February 1890, a guest left a lighted cigar on a balcony (it is also said that someone dropped a cigar or cigarette in a pile of wood chips left by carpenters working on the 3rd floor).

The family said the fire started around 3:00 in the afternoon. They had planned a seated dinner and had gone into town to pick up the mail. Riding back they saw flames shooting through the shingled roof. The fire burned from top to bottom making it impossible to extinguish, and the house was completely destroyed in the conflagration.

The only remnants today are 23 haunting columns, a few pieces of china, and a set of the wrought-iron stairs and portions of the balustrade. The flight of stairs and the balustrade are now used at Alcorn State University's chapel down the road.

Near Windsor, atop an Indian mound, is a cemetery where members of the family have been buried since the early 1800s. The earliest grave is that of Frisby Freeland, a Revolutionary War soldier.

Windsor's ruins have appeared in several motion pictures including Raintree County (1957) starring Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift and most recently in the movie Ghosts of Mississippi with Whoopi Goldberg and Alec Baldwin and James Woods.

Also in the nearby area are the site of the ghost town of Rodney, Mississippi, the Shaifer House, and the Bethel Presbyterian Church, founded in 1826.

It should also be noted that the ghost town of Rocky Springs, Mississippi, is also nearby, which has only one building standing and that is the church.

The actual appearance of the mansion has been mainly conjecture since the original plans, along with all of the Daniell's family photographs and drawings were destroyed in the fire. However, in 1991, historians discovered a drawing by Henry Otis Dwight, an officer in the 20th Ohio Infantry, made while his unit was encamped on the grounds of the home. It is thought that Windsor was the first mansion Union troops encountered following Grant's crossing of the river in May 1863 in his effort to cut off Vicksburg from the south.

Windsor's ruins were added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 23, 1971 and is administered by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History's Division of Historic S
