Shades Of Blue

Shades Of Blue

Shades Of Blue recorded in 1961 in New York. Features George Colman, Junior Mance, George Tucker and Jimmy Cobb. Liner note: Howard McGhee was one of the first and best, of the bebop trumpeters. During the 1940’s he was present on many, many record sessions where his technique and complete reliability were valuble assets. On Charlie Parker’s last recording date before his breakdown in 1946 it was McGhee who literally carried Bird through Max Is Making Wax and Bebop. Howard’s triple tonguing and very clean articulation, irrespective of tempo, were the envy of lesser men and even a jazz giant in his own right, the late Fats Navarro, was always lavish in his praise for McGhee.-Alun Morgan

My favorite Rashaan recording is his version of the Dionne Warwicke pop song "You'll Never Get To Heaven If You Break My Heart" on an album called "Bright Moments".

Today the word is Bob

Today the word is Bob

Ahhh, Bob Wiseman... Craziest. Musician. Ever. A very good set, with accordians and piano and guitars and a multimedia presentation complete with videos accompanying the songs. The highlight was a 10-minute song called Man of Misery, about a brutal breakup he had just gone through. True to Bob form, the video poked fun at him while he tore his heart out for the audience.

Bob is one of the most talented musicians in Canada, and can easily out-distance and out-play many of the bands that have been more successful. But he's chosen to explore the things he wants to explore, which are always off-center and a little crazy. He hasn't chosen obscurity, he's just chosen to do what he wants with his art.

I think Bob would love this shot because of that. It would appeal to the quirkiness of his life and art. At least, I hope so.

For me, the juxtaposition of a video belittling Bob next to a gut-wrenching song of loss cuts at the heart of what it means to make art, and to live.

Living is about making judgements. Choices are things that you must do when life presents you with options. But judgements carry the weight of morality. They define choice in a very particular way. They make choices mean something.

And I hate making judgements. It's why I stopped writing. When you make the judgements necessary for art to function, to be art, you are presenting a particular view of the world to your audience. That view excludes anything outside of itself. And that exclusion, that choice, that judgement, can become dogma. And then ideology, probably the most dangerous human activity.

(If you've been paying attention, you'll notice that I judged Bob about five paragraphs ago. I don't know Bob. And I have no idea if what I'm saying is true. That's the dangerous part.)

It's very hard for art not to become ideology. It's very hard for life. And ideology isn't human. At least, it's very hard for ideology to be human.

And the tension between those extremes: the need to make your art or your life meaningful through judgement versus the very human need to forgive, to not judge, to be free...that is a very hard line to walk.

Bob walked it on Saturday.

I guess walking it means being a little crazy.

And I guess I want to be a little crazy.

Stay tuned next week, when I will present an even more depressing and weird story that has some bizarre lesson to be learned.

Why? Because I like you.

France Countryside

We're finally in France. Took us almost 11 hours to get here. We drove through Holland, Luxembourg, Belgium and finally France. We got stuck in traffic like I've never seen. We were at a standstill for more than an hour. I got a sunburn through the window. It was 33 degrees (celcius) and so humid

But France is beautiful. The little town we are staying in this week was the most important town in France in the 16th century. It went through the war, and the whole town is so old. The buildings are insane...so many pictures, and bullet holes in all of them. It's amazing. So much history

The only thing is...it's so old we have no internet. I'm "stealing" off my uncle, but I can't post often here. Guess I'll just enjoy myself :)

Male Lyrebird In Concert

Male Lyrebird In Concert

This is the classic concert song and dance position for an adult male Superb lyrebird. The amazing tail, with long stems, shaped like the ancient musical instrument, the lyre, with webbed frills are lifted over its head and thrown as forward as possible.
He will then start singing - they will expertly mimic any other bird species, and more amazingly, any mechanical sounds too! This Includes car alarms, camera motor drives, chainsaws.

The song and dance can continue for ages - it is most impressive!

Normally lyrebirds are extremely shy and are hard to spot in the wild - you would normally hear a male then see it.
The Superb Lyrebird (Menura novaehollandiae) is a pheasant-sized songbird, approximately 100cm long, with brown upper body plumage, grayish-brown below, rounded wings and strong legs. It is the longest and third heaviest of all songbirds.
The polygamous male is the bearer of the most elegant of all tails. The tail has sixteen feathers, with the two outermost being lyre-shaped. Next within are two guard plumes and twelve long, lace-like feathers, known as filamentaries. Seven years is required for the tail to fully develop. After the winter mating season, the tail will fall off, and the male will grow a new tail, ready for next winter. Each year it grows bigger.
An Australian endemic, the Superb Lyrebird is distributed in the forest of southeastern Australia, from southern Victoria to southeastern Queensland. The diet consists mainly of small animals found on forest floor or from rotting logs.
Male lyrebirds call mostly during winter, when they construct and maintain an open arena-mound in dense bush, on which they sing and dance in courtship, to display to potential mates, of which the male lyrebird has several. Females build an untidy nest usually low to the ground in a moist gully where she lays a single egg, and she is the sole parent who incubates the egg over 50 days until it hatches, and she is also the sole carer of the lyrebird chick.
Lyrebirds feed on insects, spiders, earthworms and, occasionally, seeds. They find food by scratching with their feet through the leaf-litter. When in danger, lyrebirds run, rather than fly, being awkward in flight, and have also been seen to take refuge in wombat burrows.

The 50 metre tall National Carillon tower was a gift from the British government
to the people of Australia to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the National Capital, Canberra.

The Carillon is, if you did not know, a musical instrument! It contains 55 bells, which chime every
quarter hour and play a short tune on the hour along with tours and recitals on many days.

It is well lit at nighttime, and casts a striking figure over the water of Lake Burley Griffin.

philadelphia, pa

the craziest place i've ever been perhaps. we played a show at this wild ginsberg/kerouac beating house party with music and otherwise artistic performances on every floor. In this picture cecilia corrigan is giving a concert while all the other performers and spectators watch attentively. The guy in the front right played a bari sax through all these wild efects processors and the guy in the back with a mask over his face played these songs that sounded like an old carnival player piano on a vintage gibson acoustic guitar and hummed over them with this haunting erie voice. ezra stayed for the night and i'm glad we got him back the next day. i think it was the kind of place that you get lost in.

PLAY ELECTRIC VIOLIN. PLAY ELECTRIC

Vega Electric Violin Model 220, Sn. V8933, ca. 1939

Vega Electric Violin Model 220, Sn. V8933, ca. 1939

Introduced in 1939 with the Electric Bass Viola, Vega’s electric violin completes the family of stringed electric instruments offered by the manufacturer in the 1930s. The pickup hidden beneath the metal plate is, by necessity, different from any other used in Vega’s offerings. Needing to accommodate the gut strings of a bowed instrument, Vega’s president, William Nelson, resurrected a patent design (1994919) he had applied for Jan. 28, 1933. The technology is basically the same as what was used on the first manufactured 1928 Stromberg electric—a twist on speaker technology. The bridge of the violin sits atop a metal plate that rides on a thin layer of rubber. Attached to the bottom of the plate at a 90 degree angle is a thin piece of metal 1” long. Suspended from the bottom of the plate is a housing that consists of a horseshoe magnet that energizes two pole pieces containing a coil of wire, ?” thick and 1” in diameter. In the center of the coil is a slot through which the thin piece of metal attached to the floating plate passes. When the violin is played, the bridge vibrates the floating plate. This moves the thin piece of metal up and down within the slot in the coil creating a small electrical current. In other words the thin piece of vibrating metal is taking the place of a vibrating string.

Clarinet Solo

Clarinet Solo

This music store in Sophienstrasse specializes in vintage instruments.

A ghost of my reflected image shares the window space with this beautiful clarinet (unless it's an oboe). This is one of a selection of wind instruments with the keys arranged in "Bachformat" here in this window.

I always wanted to play clarinet as a kid, but a run-in with a bad Upper West Side music school saddled me first with the violin, which I hated, and then with piano, which I liked but didn't personally want to play. By the time I got around to obligatory (classical) guitar lessons years later, the magic was gone and I was strictly a listener.

Dancing to the solo clarinet

Dancing to the solo clarinet

That was a fairly beautiful evening. The end of summer, the end of the week, the end of the day. The sun goes down and so does the CD player. We dance to a solo clarinet and sing a long a bit while we go until the sky is too pink to see and our feet are too sore to move, and its time to return to the city and the twenty first century.

Clarinettist = Ewan. Catch him at passing Clouds on the first Wednesday of the month.
