Mausoleum of Maussollos at Halicarnassus
The Mausoleum of Maussollos, or Mausoleum of Halicarnassus was a tomb built between 353-350 BC at Halicarnassus (present Bodrum, Turkey), for Mausolus a provincial king in the Persian Empire, and Artemisia, his wife and sister.
It was designed by the Greek architects Satyrus and Pythius.
The structure was approximately 45-metres (135 feet) in height, and each of the four sides was adorned by a freize created by one of four famous Greek sculptors.
The finished structure was considered to be such an aesthetic triumph that Antipater of Sidon identified it as one of his Seven Wonders of the World. The word mausoleum has since come to be used ally for any grand tomb, though "Mausol-eum" originally meant "in honor of Mausol".
Life of Maussollos and Artemisia
In 377 BC, Halicarnassus was capital of a small kingdom along the Mediterranean coast of Anatolia. It was in that year the ruler of this land, Hecatomnus of Mylasa, died and left control of the kingdom to his son, Mausolus. Hecatomnus, a local satrap to the Persians, had been ambitious and had taken control of several of the neighboring cities and districts.
Next to Mausolus and Artemisia he had several other sons and daughters: Ada (adopted mother of Alexander the Great), Idrieus, and Pixodarus. Mausolus in his time, extended the territory even further so that it finally included most of southwestern Asia Minor.
Maussollos, with his queen and sister Artemisia, ruled over Halicarnassus and the surrounding territory for 24 years. Maussollos, though he was descended from local people, spoke Greek and admired the Greek way of life and government. He founded many cities of Greek design along the coast and encouraged Greek democratic traditions.
Maussollos decided to build a new capital, a city as hard to capture as it was magnificent to look at. He chose the town Halicarnassus. If Mausolus' ships blocked a small channel, they could keep all enemy warships out. He started making Halicarnassus a fit capital for a warrior prince. His workmen deepened the city's harbor and used the dredged up sand to make protecting arms in front of the channel.
On land, they laid out paved squares, streets, and houses for ordinary citizens, and on one side of the harbor they built a massive fortress-palace for Mausolus, positioned so that there were clear views out to sea and inland to the hills--the places that enemies might attack. The workmen built walls and watch towers on the land ward side and put up a Greek-style theater and a temple to Ares, the Greek god of war.
Mausolus Artemisia spent their huge amount of tax money on beautifying the city. They bought statues, temples, and buildings of gleaming marble. In the center of the city Mausolus planned to place a resting place for his body after he was dead. It would be a tomb that would forever show how rich he and his queen were.
In 353 BC Mausolus died, leaving Artemisia broken-hearted. (It was the custom in Caria for rulers to marry their own sisters. One reason for these marriages might have been that it kept the power and wealth in the family.) As a tribute to him, she decided to build him the most splendid tomb in the known world. It became a structure so famous that Mausolus' name is now associated with all stately tombs through our modern word mausoleum.
The building was also so beautiful and unique it became one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Soon after construction of the tomb started Artemisia found herself in a crisis. Rhodes, an island in the Aegean Sea between Greece and Asia Minor, had been conquered by Mausolus.
When the Rhodians heard of his death they rebelled and sent a fleet of ships to capture the city of Halicarnassus. Knowing that the Rhodian fleet was on the way, Artemisa hid her own ships at a secret location at the east end of the city's harbor.
After troops from the Rhodian fleet disembarked to attack, Artemisia's fleet made a surprise raid, captured the Rhodian fleet, and towed it out to sea. Artemisia put her own soldiers on the invading ships and sailed them back to Rhodes. Fooled into thinking that the returning ships were their own victorious navy, the Rhodians failed to put up a defense and the city was easily captured quelling the rebellion.
Artemisa lived for only two years after the death of her husband. The urns with their ashes were placed in the yet unfinished tomb. As a form of ritual sacrifice the bodies of a large number of dead animals were placed on the stairs leading to the tomb, then the stairs were filled with stone and rubble, sealing off the access.
According to the historian Pliny, the craftsmen decided to stay and finish the work after their patron died "considering that it was at once a memorial of their own fame and of the sculptor's art."
The Construction of the Mausoleum
Artemisia decided that no expense was to be spared in the building of the tomb. She sent messengers to Greece to find the m

The Electric Palace cinema, Harwich, is one of the oldest purpose-built cinemas to survive complete with its silent screen, original projection room and ornamental frontage still intact. Other interesting features include an open plan entrance lobby complete with paybox, and a small stage plus dressing rooms although the latter are now unusable. 1911 Harold Hooper's design
The cinema was built in 18 weeks at a cost of ?1,500 and opened on Wednesday, November 29th, 1911, the first film being The Battle of Trafalgar and The Death of Nelson. The creator of the Palace was Charles Thurston, a travelling showman well known in East Anglia, and the architect was Harold Hooper, a dynamic young man of 26 years who demonstrated his imaginative flair with this his first major building. The cinema closed in 1956 after 45 years interrupted only by the 1953 floods and was listed as a building of sociological interest in September 1972 and is now a Grade II* listed building. It re-opened in 1981 and now runs as a community cinema showing films every weekend.

Extreme Inverter project 02
I needed portable strobe power, so I tried the Innovatronix Explorer with my Dyna-Light kit. It worked ok with one pack, if you consider a 9+ second recycle time "ok". Not for shooting people it isn't. And it wouldn't power my other pack at all. So I started this little project.
It began with thinking about the pricey but great Dyna-Light XP1100. I bought an 1100-watt Exeltech inverter (pure sine wave), then experimented with a few battery configurations. Settled on using an Optima deep cycle marine battery. Put it together with 150-amp fuses and 2-guage battery wire, dropped it all into a wheeled 40-quart cooler for easier carrying.
Will bolt the fuse holders to the side and probably paint some lightning bolts on the side. It's PERFECT. Should last all day, but haven't field tested it yet. Can't wait to, as well as testing it with a 2000 watt-second pack, it should handle the power since it's peak, not continuous.
*Update* I just tested it in the studio. 650 flashes at full power with 3 seconds between (recycles in 1.8 seconds) before it was too low to handle that speed of recycle. More than I'd ask for it on a shoot day, there would be more rest as I adjusted lights, etc. Very good performance.
I'll get a chance to try it in the field tomorrow on a test and next week on an ad shoot.

I got this globe when I was a little girl, it was gifted by my paternal grand-parents & I think it was almost the only thing they ever gifted me (not joking, at all - I wish)
As I'll turn 32 in a couple of months, this globe (which has a light inside, as you can see - photo taken around 09pm) must be 25 years old. OK, let's call it a baby vintage. LOL

How did people in the mid 19th century bore their friends and relatives before home videos or slide carousels? They brought over their magic lanterns!
(Actually these were primarily children's toys and probably responsible for some untimely deaths in Victorian playrooms. 150 years ago, giving a child a toy with a functional smoke stack wasn't considered absurd.)

Falkirk Wheel 25-05-06
The Millennium Link was an ambitious ?84.5m project with the objective of restoring navigability across Scotland on the historic Forth & Clyde Canal and Union Canal, providing a corridor of regenerative activity through central Scotland.
A major challenge faced, was to link the Forth and Clyde Canal, which lay 35m (115ft) below the level of the Union Canal. Historically, the two canals had been joined at Falkirk by a flight of 11 locks that stepped down across a distance of 1.5km, but these has been dismantled in 1933, breaking the link.
What was required was a method of connecting these two canals by way of a boat lift. British Waterways were keen to present a visionary solution taking full advantage of the opportunity to create a truly spectacular and fitting structure that would suitably commemorate the Millennium and act as an iconic symbol for years to come.
The Falkirk Wheel lies at the end of a reinforced concrete aqueduct that connects, via the Roughcastle tunnel and a double staircase lock, to the Union Canal. Boats entering the Wheel’s upper gondola are lowered, along with the water that they float in, to the basin below. At the same time, an equal weight rises up, lifted in the other gondola. This works on the Archimedes principle of displacement. That is, the mass of the boat sailing into the gondola will displace an exactly proportional volume of water so that the final combination of ‘boat plus water’ balances the original total mass.
Each gondola runs on small wheels that fit into a single curved rail fixed on the inner edge of the opening on each arm. In theory, this should be sufficient to ensure that they always remain horizontal, but any friction or sudden movement could cause the gondola to stick or tilt. To ensure that this could never happen and that the water and boats always remain perfectly level throughout the whole cycle, a series of linked cogs acts as a back up.
To commemorate the completion of The Millennium Link through the opening of The Falkirk Wheel by Her Majesty The Queen during her Golden Jubilee on 24th May 2002.

You will also see whole families riding one bike..... as many as 4....baby on the handlebars, child on the crossbar, mom on the seat, dad standing on the pedals. But manage to still ride safely. Hot Wheels!! vroooom!
My very first light painting picture. I must admit i now appreciate other pictures *much* more than I already did! More to come I think, made a nice change to be making the picture rather than simply taking it.
Hot Wheel
Someone had a Hot Wheels car just like this except his was white. I took a picture of mine for comparison.

She is my Pink Princess ....
She's the apple o' me eye,
Bringer of sunshine sky.
With one wave of her luminous smile,
My heart skips 'or the country mile.
She is my Pink Princess,
Purveyoress of Pinkness,
Wonder of lovliness,
Delightful profunderess,

Close-up on the push rivet. Just use something small (I used an angled allen wrench) to push the center in. It will pop in with very little force. Then just use your finger(nails) to pull the rivet out. No real force was necessary.

It was always now and it always will be.
Today, i noticed one small triumph in my day. I came away from a social moment catching up with a good friend I haven't seen for a while. Not much time and lots to cover. How much of an ingrained habit of mine to come away from social interaction and find myself re-winding the mental tape, chastising myself judging all the things I said wrong, how i failed to listen and give enough space for balanced communication, rush, rush, rush. It's almost always a few minutes I come off worse. So many faults in myself. Well this day, I steeled myself, gripped the steering wheel and held very tightly to the present moment. I passed those moments and found it wasn't necessary to think those thoughts. Small triumph. It's in the small things that the different counts.

I hate the smell of moron in the morning
Originally written August 14th. 2006
Typically I consider myself a rather mild tempered, fare minded bipedal. I imagine it comes with the territory. There are however certain events that have a habit of transpiring within my daily routine that can quite easily dislodge my docile temperament, and unleash an inert not so savvy side of me, that despite what I’d regard as a voluminous effort of reserve, seems incapable of rational communication what so ever, once awoken. It’s like Debi always says. "You can’t fix stupid."
For example. I do not particularly appreciate some one smoking in one of my bays when my crew is in the middle of washing a tanker loaded heavy with 35,000lbs. of highly volatile gasoline. This rather asinine disregard for life and limb has the repeated result of me not so politely asking he or she to douse said ignited tobacco product in a rapid if not just slightly vigorous manner, taking care to utilize as many intensive verbs as possible, while explaining my reasoning. Like wise I do not find the world around me to be as kosher as it normally is when unauthorized persons decide they are suddenly qualified enough to operate one of my machines, and derail it. A situation like this again is proceeded by many expletive metaphors and monosyllable adverbs that better accent my disdain, while I drag a lift jack, and steel piped, soon to be man powered, levers into the bay. These sorts of things often leave me paraphrasing my latest self thought up proverb. W.W.R.D. "What would Russ do?" Unfortunately I do not have a tazer, nor the persuasion to talk my boss into buying me a cattle prod.
The point is, these sorts of things have a habit of getting under my skin. Not so much in that they happen, because yes, sooner or later they are going to happen. It’s as in evitable as Uwezz suddenly deciding to rip a pair of antenna’s off a rig, or Thelma’s new tick of allowing the top brush to jump a link first thing every morning. It’s not that these things happen, but rather the frequency in which they happen. Regardless, by days end I can usually take these events and stuff them away into the back of my mind, before the drive home has concluded. Usually.
Today, it seemed that I.Q. for some inexplicable reason plummeted. I’m not entirely sure what might have caused it, but it seems as though sometime in the night, some unnatural force crept into the world, and stole a few points from everyone’s I.Q.’s, some more then others. It should equally be noted that in no small part was I an exception to this rather paradoxical I.Q. point thieving phenomenon.
This morning, and the second truck in. The driver barely speaks a lick of English, and it takes more then a small amount of effort on my part just to figure out what the hell it is he wants. When I’d finally gone to work on his rig, I still was not entirely sure if what I was doing was in fact what he wanted done. It should be noted that this is after all an English speaking country, and the rules regarding ones ability to speak and understand the English language in order to obtain a class A drivers licence and operate large equipment is pretty clear. You must. For some reason I continually find myself scratching my head at the realization that the driver I am trying to communicate with can’t seem to understand a single word coming out of my mouth...This can not always be attributed to the language barrier. Some folk just don’t understand common sense. However that was not the case with this particular driver. He didn’t speak English and I don’t speak Russian. The situation ended up with me very strategically relying on his body language to decipher if I was indeed doing what he wanted done. Like wise. Once I had decided that what I was doing was in fact what he wanted done, I had to then try and explain to him that I would be needing the engine of his rig shut off, and as it’s a Volvo, I would also be needing his assistance in popping open the hood, from inside the cab. He seems to understand and returns to the cab of his rig. The hood pops open, and he climbs back out and steps aside...With the engin still running.
Alright. A little annoying, but I figure I can just deal with it. There’s work to be done, and I’m the one needing to do it. We’ll hustle through the truck, get it out, and I can move on with the day. Great plan. That is until the driver walks up, and closes the hood he had just opened....
Can someone tell me what the hell just happened?
Moving right along through the day to the fine gentlemen that turned the last hour of my work day into a fine small ripe slice of hell. He was driving a small box van with a little trailer behind it. Honestly when I saw the combination pull in, the thought of it being a problem had not for a moment crossed my mind. That is until I open the back door, and began re-cataloging every event that had happened through out this fine sunny day. He had p
Versatility of Metal
Taken for the theme "metal" at our work photo club. I took this because of the variety of different ways the metal is used in the bike drive-train: wire in tension for the spokes, cold-forged metal for the hub and CNC machined sprockets that make up the cassette. And metal is pretty much essential for all these tasks if you want an efficient, lightweight means of transport.
There are also several different metals here: steel in the spokes, aluminium alloy in the hub and nickel-plating on the sprockets. (And for those really interested, the cassette is a Campag Chorus 10 speed.)
As for taking the shot, I had to have the bike upside down to be able to spin the wheel without it wobbling (the photo was then turned over in software) and two Canon flashguns were used in strobe mode to capture the motion.

A chair is a stable, raised surface used to sit on, commonly for use by one person. Chairs are most often supported by four legs and have a back; however, a chair can have three legs (in a triangle shape) or could have a different shape depending on the criteria of the chair specifications. A chair without a back or arm rests is a stool, or when raised up, a bar stool. A chair with arms is an armchair and with folding action and inclining footrest, a recliner. A permanently fixed chair in a train or theater is a seat or airline seat; when riding, it is a saddle and bicycle saddle, and for an automobile, a car seat or infant car seat. With wheels it is a wheelchair and when hung from above, a swing.
