Figueira da Foz - Portugal

Forte de Santa Catarina, localizado no Largo do Quebra-Mar (Avenida de Espanha) e um imovel de interesse publico ( Dec. n? 44075, DG 281 de 05 Dezembro 1961).
Erguido no cume de um pequeno outeiro a Norte da foz do rio Mondego, esta construcao militar e o cartao de visita para quem chega a cidade da Figueira da Foz.
Dada a sua natureza e situacao e atendendo ao valor militar da posicao, e bem provavel que no local tivesse existido um castro lusitano, abrigando a pequena povoa maritima.
Ignora-se a sua historia relativamente as epocas anteriores a constituicao da nacionalidade, avancando com a hipotese de que a fortaleza lusitana, sucessivamente restaurada, tivesse resistido a dominacao romana e aos tempos posteriores, desempenhando assim o papel de defesa e de atalaia.
E a unica fortificacao da enseada de Buarcos que conserva um nucleo fechado.
Desdobrava-se em duas importantes missoes: por um lado, defendia a entrada do Mondego, por outro, fazia parte, com o Fortim de Palheiros e o Forte de S. Pedro de Buarcos, da linha defensiva da enseada.
Vetusta reliquia militar, sistema abaluartado, com o cunho inconfundivel de traca Vauban, foi mandado concluir por D. Joao IV para defesa da barra.
De planta triangular, apresenta no angulo norte um meio baluarte, tendo em cada um dos outros um baluarte cortado no vertice das faces em forma de cauda de andorinha.
Esta fortificacao foi desaconselhada por grande parte dos tratadistas, na medida em que originava um angulo demasiado agudo nas faces do baluarte. Contudo, as limitacoes do terreno assim o obrigaram.
Em 1602, as vilas da Figueira da Foz e de Buarcos foram atacadas por piratas ingleses, que muito danificaram as estruturas das fortalezas. Foi nessa altura que o forte foi remodelado, tendo-lhe sido atribuida a forma abaluartada que ainda hoje possui.
Ainda durante o seculo XVII, mais precisamente em 1640, o forte de Santa Catarina foi alvo de um novo restauro, por ordem de D. Joao IV, tendo sido construida a grande bateria, que incluia 15 pecas de artilharia, a fim de defender a barra do Mondego de eventuais ataques.
Apos actuacao brilhante contra a pirataria que atacava esta costa maritima de facil desembarque, foi o Forte de Santa Catarina palco, em 27 de Junho de 1808, de uma accao patriotica, decisiva talvez para o malogro da arremetida de Junot, durante a primeira invasao napoleonica.
Dentro deste forte existe ainda uma capela conhecida por capela de Santa Catarina, com uma esbelta imagem da padroeira, do seculo XVIII.

Built atop a small hill north of the mouth of the river Mondego, the military construction is the card for those who arrive in the city of Figueira da Foz
Given its nature and situation and the military value of the position, it is likely that the site had existed a Lusitanian, sheltering the small town at sea.

Within this strong there is still a chapel known as the chapel of St. Catherine, with a graceful image of the patron saint of the eighteenth century.
