Heroes' Last Stand

Heroes' Last Stand

On the left is my father and on the right is his uncle -- they grew up like brothers (that's a long story, but true nonetheless) and both of them are now strling in the final years of life.

The strle is with dementia, and the good news is it hasn't dampened the gentle, loving hearts and compassionate souls they are both known for, but it has become a threat to their safety and well-being.

These two have been lifelong heroes of mine. My dad watched his father die at home on the couch of complications from appendicitis around 1928. In 1961 my dad was nearly shot to death in the same incident wherein my mom was shot to death. From age 37 until this very day, now 48 years later, my dad has walked on canes as a result of the shooting. In all those 48 years, I never ONCE heard him complain about what had happened --- not one time.

My "Uncle Charlie", unlike most kids, was attracted to work more than he was play. From the time he was little he has worked hard, played hard, and thumbed his nose at convention. He has smoked since he was probably 10 or 11 years old, mercilessly beat his body as a tool, and yet he stands today in his mid-80's. He has always had a laugh that makes others laugh along with him, and eyes that twinkle when he smiles.

And now, these heroes of mine are approaching their last stand. Time has become an enemy they can't out distance, and it is painful to see two warriors and "brothers" fight that final battle.

The Heroes' Last Stand. I stand myself and salute. Great men they are. Great men they are.

Heros ..... (231/365)

Heros ..... (231/365)

Who is your hero? Mine is my Dad .....

I stumbled across a book about a year ago by Christopher Reeve (probably most famous for appearing in the Superman films; before he unfortunately lost all feeling from the neck downwards following a horse riding accident) The book is called "Nothing is Impossible" and I would urge everyone to pick up a copy if they can. I bought mine from my local library for just 10p!

I was putting another book away earlier tonight and this Christopher Reeve book just happened to be on top of the pile in the draw and it really got me thinging about what a great book it was and indeed what a great man he was .....

The first person I think of when I think of a Hero is my Dad - I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that.

"A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles." - Christopher Reeve
