Les Miserables - The Dream Cast in Concert The 10th anniversary of the international musical sensation Les Miserables is celebrated in this 1995 concert at London's Royal Albert Hall. The all-star cast features Colm Wilkinson (Valjean), Ruthie Henshall (Fantine), Michael Ball (Marius), Judy Kuhn (Cosette), Lea Salonga (Eponine), Philip Quast (Javert), and Alun Armstrong (Thenardier). Favorite songs from the Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg score include "Who Am I?", "I Dreamed a Dream," "Master of the House," "One Day More," "Do You Hear the People Sing?" and "Bring Him Home." The 10th anniversary concert video of the international musical sensation Les Miserables might be the best thing to appease fans until a full-fledged movie comes along. Or it might be even better, as feature films are often subject to extramusical casting considerations and this 1995 dream cast is superb. Reprising their roles from the original London company are Colm Wilkinson (Valjean), Michael Ball (Marius), and Alun Armstrong (Thenardier). From Broadway come Judy Kuhn (Cosette), Lea Salonga (Eponine), and Michael Maguire (Enjolras); from a later London production comes Ruthie Henshall (Fantine); and from Australia comes Philip Quast (Javert). Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg's score vividly captures the passion of Victor Hugo's epic tale of post-Revolutionary France, combining tear-jerking ballads ("I Dreamed a Dream," "Bring Him Home") and rousing anthems ("Do You Hear the People Sing"). The format of this concert is closer to that of a dramatic cantata rather than a fully staged production; the singers stand at their microphone stands with an orchestra and chorus behind them, but they do wear costumes and participate in some movement. At certain points such as the climax of the barricade scene, the video switches to action from a stage production. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra sounds great, and it can be thrilling when 200 choristers (dressed in logo T-shirts) rise to their feet for a full-company number such as "One Day More." Also, subtitles provide date and scene information and help move the story along. The 147-minute video contains footage not seen when Les Mis was a PBS pledge-drive staple, most notably the encore in which a progression of 17 actors who have played Valjean around the world share "Do You Hear the People Sing?" Freebird is arguably the greatest rock anthem ever written. Lynyrd Skynyrd's Freebird is what you get when you mix great lyrics, guitar licks that will blow your mind, and a whole lot of southern soul. This is the song that can bring a crowd of 100,000 people to a silent stand still during its mesmerizing intro and then that same crowd into rock and roll hysteria by songs end. Even with the tragic death of several members of the band and crew in 1977 - this song and the Skynyrd legacy continues "travelin on, now." Alejandro Escovedo laments hitting the big One-O ("Candy just doesn't taste as good anymore") on "Sad & Dreamy"; Rosie Flores sends 'em flocking to the speakers with first track "Red, Red Robin"; Robbie Fulks feels the pain of "Godfrey," the sickly unemployed amateur children's magician; and the Cornell Hurd Band makes a compelling case for napkin use with "Don't Wipe Your Face on Your Shirt." Also weighing in on such subjects as funky butts, the difficulty of being green, and weasels, beans, frogs, and dogs are Devil in a Woodpile, Rex Hobart & the Misery Boys, and Split Lip Rayfield. Granted, grownups with R&B, jazz, or rock leanings won't get as much mileage out of this CD as those who sniff the twang in song titles like "Hinky Dinky Dee" and like the aroma, but there's no denying its down-home, keep-it-real musicianship--everything from Dobros to duckies do their part. If ever there was a record for musically deprived parents, this is it. Het blijkt een ventje te zijn waarvan ik eerst dacht dat hij slechts elf, twaalf jaar oud was. Blijkbaar loopt z'n biologische klok een paar jaar achter. Heel surreeel om te zien dat hij het groepje leidt, temeer omdat hij waarschijnlijk het meest cherubische gezicht heeft dat ik ooit gezien heb. Zo'n gruwelijk schattig klein engeltje. Behalve dan dat hij dat zichtbaar niet wil zijn. Logisch, schattig en stoer zijn wederzijds uitsluitend (vinden jochies van veertien). En om de baas te zijn moet je natuurlijk het stoerst van allemaal zijn. Hij doet goed z'n best: een Metallica shirt, een jas die er uitziet alsof 'ie gemaakt is van gerecyclede legertenten. Het feit dat z'n gezicht de hoofdoorzaak van z'n schattigheid is heeft hij blijkbaar niet echt door. En aangezien z'n jas een paar maten te groot is ziet het er eerder uit alsof klein broertje de klerenkast van grote broer geplunderd heeft. "Aaaah, so cute!" On a stop near the northern station a group of teenagers gets in. They're around thirteen, fourteen years old. Now, most of the time, groups of kids that age have one guy who's acting like he's da boss. Usually, the obnoxious, slightly-dumb-but-strong bully. With this group it's different. It's the little guy I originally had guessed as only eleven years old. Guess his biological clock is ticking a bit slower than usual. Seeing him being the boss of this little gang is a bit surreal, not in a least because of his cherubic little face. He looks like a cute little angel. Except for the fact that he's clearly trying not to. Makes sense, cute and tough are mutually exclusive (in the mindset of fourteen year old boys). And to be the boss you have to look tougher than anyone else of course. He's really trying his best, with his Metallica shirt, ripped jeans and a jacket that looks like it's recycled from old army tents. Too bad for him his adorable face is the main cause of his cuteness. And considering his clothes are a few sizes too large for him it looks like cute widdle brother borrowed some of his big brudda's clothes. Aww, soo cute! But when we approach central station, or little James Dean pulls out his secret weapon: a cigarette! Gasp! And yes, when they get out, one of his minions lights the cigarette for him. Well, aren't you the tough guy. Big Toes 221:365 February 6, 2009 Friday! Yay! So, the first time my brother went to Paris, he came home with some souvenirs for the kids and myself. This is what I got. LOL! What I've always found funny, is he saw those and was like "I'm getting those for Steph!" Yeah, I didn't get a t-shirt, or a mini Eiffel Tower keychain. I got slippers that make it look like I have the feet of the Huntchback of Notre Dame with a pedicture. Yeah, definitely had my headbanger goin' on here, as I was, well, still a dirty white boy, but my dirty-blond-boyishness had long since disappeared, fortunately or unfortunately (depending on your particular disposition). I absolutely hated having to wear that f*ckin' shirt, tie, and jacket, but Sarasota High School (in Florida) wouldn't let us do otherwise. Had a great smile, too. NOT! LOL! If you listen to the current research, this is why I got divorced... because I didn't smile in my graduation photo. Heh. (You can make of that research what you will.) At this point, I was very much listening to Foreigner, Boston, Van Halen, Queen, KISS, Deep Purple, Grand Funk Railroad, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and others. If they had long hair, played loud music, encouraged rebellion, promoted the idea of free thinking, then I was pumping their music into my ears. By now, the writer was in full-bloom, as I had already written an entire portfolio full of science fiction, fantasy, mystery, and other sorts of short stories, novellas, novelettes. I wrote my very first science fiction short story when I was about 6- or 7-years-old, in fact. None of those stories I wrote back then still exist, fortunately (or unfortunately—again, depending on your disposition), and that's probably for the better, too, since it was all crap. :P Well, let's just say that I was still learning how to write good, publishable fiction, so although it was crap, it wasn't wasted crap, if that makes any sense. It's been said that a writer has to write at least a million words before they get to the good stuff. (I believe it was Ray Bradbury who said this.) I've easily written that, and I think the quality of my current stories show it. (Certainly, the fact that the stories I submit now get the good sorts of rejections is testimony to the improvement of my writing.) Not surprisingly, I was also, at the time of this photo, very much aiming at writing novels, and fantasizing about being invited on the Tonight Show by Johnny Carson to talk about my latest novel—and now I'm aging myself. :P You can also see in this photo that the intellectual/geek/nerd had absolutely taken firm root at this age (I was 17, almost 18). For a term paper in an English class during my sophomore year of high school, back when I was living in England, my subject was nuclear power and its development. Got an A on that paper, and went on to ace the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) test, too, and qualified for every bloody job every branch of the military had to offer. I was originally going to enlist in the Navy and work as an Electronic Technician in their Nuclear Power field. It would've meant a six-year enlistment, because the school alone was 2 years long, and in the end I would've ended up either on a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier or nuclear-powered sub. On the day that I was to enlist in the Navy, however, I deliberately overslept. :P LOL! I had decided I didn't want that, and totally pissed off my recruiter. Yeah, the rebel was still alive and well. My mum had to wake me up to tell me that the recruiter was on the phone, and when I picked up, he proceeded to call me all sorts of names, including telling me in no uncertain terms that I had shown that I had absolutely no integrity, bla, bla, bla. ~YAWN!~ So, in response to that, I went back to the recruiter's office, and, after figuring out which jobs interested me, signed up to join the Air Force. Since I'm showing old photos (and this is the last of the bunch) and making confessions about my past, I might as well add another confession to the mix. When I finally got into Air Force bootcamp, at Lackland AFB, in San Antonio, Texas, the evening of the day that they cut my hair, I cried, and I was crying because the f*ckers had taken my hair. I knew it would happen. After all, from birth until age 17, I was an Air Force brat, and was well aware that they were going to cut all my locks off. (Also, by the time I'd turned 17, I'd spent 10 of those years living overseas in Japan, Thailand, and England. I would later go on to spend more years of my life overseas, living in Greece. Even today, I can still boast that I've lived one-quarter of my life overseas.) In many ways, not much has changed in all the years that have passed, yet I'm also a very different person from what I was back then. I went shopping yesterday and got jewelry, shirts, and two pairs of short boots. Today I got a roll of film developed and I got records: Van Halen, Air Supply, and Paul McCartney. I went to a ghost town and and got some bracelets and earrings. I have less than twenty bucks left and I don't care cause I'm just so happy. He is the leader with a sense of entitlement. He is considered very persuasive... even to humans. Adisa (The one in the suit)- His name means "the one who is clear". He is the brother of Abioye but does not share his ambition. He is untrusting of humans but will work with them to bring down his revenge crazed brothers. He has joined the Officers but plans to return to Africa as soon as the job is done. Little does he know that... ***Note originally Adisa was a mod for Monkey Man and O'brian but in Horrorclix games he is played as Adisa and use Alpha conversion rules.*** Jelani (The Lab Gorilla mod in the middle)- His name means "Mighty" in Swahili. He is Abioye's enforcer and blind follower. Nothing man can say that will sway his bloodlust for revenge. Tau (the closest Gorilla on the right hand side of your screen. He's wearing the shirt.)- His name means "Lion" and was named after a african King in the 18th century. He challenges Abioye for leadership every chance he gets. He is also the technically skilled scientist of the group. Equally driven as Abioye for revenge is what keeps them working together. Think of them as the John Lennon/ Paul McCartney of the group. Always fighting but can produce great things when working together. Zuberi (The original vet lab gorilla in the back right)- His name means strong in Swahili. He suffered brain damage from an over zealous lab assistant that didn't like the way he challenged her with his eyes. He follows whomever leads. Because of the brain damage he speaks in broken english if he talks at all. Finally, Donkey Kong- He is the dumbest of the group. He get fixated on battling this little plumber who defeated him once after he kidnapped his girlfriend, the Princess from a small European country. Leading up to the visit, “soft arrests” of dissidents spread throughout the country—house arrests and monitoring by police. CNN reporter Emily Chang and her camera crew were also briefly arrested after filming a t-shirt that depicts Obama as Mao Zedong, the first communist leader in China. The shirts have been all the rage in China since Obama’s election in 2008. Obama’s Monday town hall speech to a group of students in Shanghai received the same treatment. According to Freedom House Asia research analyst Sarah Cook, the CCP’s censoring Obama’s experience of China by arresting and monitoring dissidents, while at the same time limiting Obama’s speech to the Chinese people, points to an insecurity within the CCP’s system. “It’s very sensitive and very afraid of its own citizens,” Cook said. “It’s very sensitive to dissent.” Human Rights The issue of human rights remains a sensitive subject between the two countries. Obama approached the subject cautiously. “The president referred explicitly to the importance of protection of freedom of religion and the rights of ethnic minorities, and then immediately discussed the importance of a resumption of a dialogue between the Dalai Lama and representatives—the Dalai Lama’s representatives and the Chinese government,” said Senior Director for the National Security Council for Asian Affairs Jeff Bader in a Tuesday press conference. The Dalai Lama told Italian news agency ANSA on Tuesday that he welcomes talks between China and Tibet. Obama did, however, acknowledge Tibet as a part of Chinese territory—to the liking of the CCP’s leadership. Obama also refused to meet with the Dalai Lama when the Tibetan spiritual leader was in Washington last month. The meeting is being rescheduled until after Obama’s China visit. Social Stability “The primary purpose of this trip was establishing good relations,” said Matthew Gertken, a China analyst for global intelligence company Stratfor. A few deals were sealed, which were outlined in a U.S.-China joint statement on Tuesday. Among them were deals on environmental policy, most of which were previously in progress. “This was just kind of a formal recognition of this process,” said Gertken. “For everything else it was just a kind of reiteration on both sides that they hope relations will continue to be good.” Trade remained the largest concern. With China having an export-based economy and with a fifth of its exports going to U.S. consumers, the country remains dependent on the U.S. market. “It’s crucial to keep in mind that for the Chinese this is an issue of social stability,” said Gertken. “If their economy starts to slow down and they can’t maintain job creation and employment levels, then they’re going to have real political and social problems on their hands.” “Trade is the biggest one that both sides are worried about, and China knows that it’s highly vulnerable,” said Gertken. “It needs the U.S. to recover, and it needs the U.S. also to not resort to protectionism or any kind of trade barriers.” One of the issues that went unanswered from CCP leaders was the U.S. request to raise the value of the Chinese currency. According to Gertken, “The Americans have often harped on China for allowing its currency to depreciate, because its currency is considered to be lower in value than it really should be.
