Cattle temperament research

Cattle temperament research

To improve the health and welfare of cattle in production systems, particularly feedlots, much interest has been focussed on temperament. In an experiment at Trangie Agricultural Research Centre several behavioural tests were evaluated for their usefulness in measuring temperament. One of the most useful was a test of the animal’s willingness to approach a seated human. This test assesses the animal’s fear of humans as well as its degree of motivation.

1960's - Eastern Gas - Staff Spotlight

1960's - Eastern Gas - Staff Spotlight

Staff Spotlight - Pat Wood

MANY GIRLS find that the choice of careers open to them is very limited, but that didn't bother pretty Pat Wood. She knew the sort of work she was cut out for, and went right ahead with her studies ..... in engineering.

Pat is shortly due to start work as a draughtswoman with the distribution department at Southgate, but at present she's biding her time at the John Dyde Training College, Bishop's Storford, working in the general office and as a relief telephonist.

Her interest in engineering started while she was still at school, and she went on to the East Herts College where she completed an O.N.D course. Then she started an engineering degree course at Enfield College, but marriage plans soon got the better of her, and she gave up the course after two months.

That's when she took on the job with Eastern Gas at Bishop's Stortford, her home town.

In July Pat is to be married to Roy Wonfor, a toolmaker from Enfield. The wedding ceremony will be at Stortford.

Nineteen year-old Pat still lists engineering among her interests. She also likes ice skating and - to put it in her words - " any sort of social get-together."

2010 Student Marshal Drew Wenzel ’08, Thayer ’10

Hometown: Fremont, California
Degree: Bachelor of engineering and master of engineering management, Thayer School of Engineering
Graduating with two engineering degrees after six years in Hanover, Wenzel truly bleeds green. Thayer School is a “wonderfully unique place,” he says, that “creates a real feeling of community and camaraderie amongst the students.” The countless late night sessions of “grinding through problem sets or projects with classmates were brutal at the time, but on those evenings I probably learned the most while making some of my best friends.” Lessons from outside the classroom? “Dartmouth has taught me how to effectively manage my life. While academics always had priority, I realized I wouldn't be happy unless I effectively balanced it against other activities like sports, volunteering, and a social life.” Next up for Wenzel is a job at Google, improving the environmental performance of the company’s buildings. He also plans to pursue a master’s in sustainable design and construction from Stanford.

Governor John Hoeven

Governor John Hoeven

JOHN HOEVEN was sworn in as the state’s 31st Governor in December 2000 and began working to build North Dakota’s future by focusing on six pillars of growth: education, economic development, agriculture, energy, technology and quality of life.

Under his leadership, North Dakota has expanded and diversified its economy, adding thousands of new jobs and growing its targeted industry sectors, including value-added agriculture, advanced manufacturing, energy development, technology-based business and tourism. During his term, North Dakota’s personal income growth has outpaced the national average. Today, North Dakota continues to grow its economy.

Because of Hoeven’s stewardship, the state ended the last fiscal biennium with a strong reserve for North Dakota’s future. In fact, under the governor’s leadership, the State of North Dakota cut property and income taxes by more than half a billion dollars in the last four years, while continuing to fund priorities like education, health care, law enforcement and other critical areas. His current budget focuses on investments that will continue to stimulate the state’s economy, as well as enhanced support for education, economic development and North Dakota families.

In his third term, Hoeven remains committed to enhancing the state’s business climate, reducing taxes and promoting a higher standard of living and a better quality of life for all North Dakotans. Building on previous initiatives, he has advanced new incentives for economic development, renewable energy, and research and development, as well as additional investments in education, including increases for teacher compensation, education equity and adequacy, and expanded funding for Centers of Excellence, an initiative that combines education and economic development to create higher-paying jobs and new business opportunities for North Dakota citizens.

Hoeven continues to promote EmpowerND, the state’s first multi-resource energy policy, which he initiated in 2002 as part of North Dakota’s comprehensive economic development strategic plan. EmpowerND has deployed a wide range of incentives for each energy sector, both renewable and traditional, as well as a conservation component. Through EmpowerND, Hoeven has worked to advance energy resources like lignite coal, oil and gas, while at the same time promoting renewable resources, such as wind, ethanol and biodiesel.

Protecting North Dakota’s citizens and communities has been an important focus of many of Hoeven’s policies and initiatives, including the introduction of new laws to strengthen the state’s violent and sexual offender statutes, and the expansion of North Dakota’s efforts to combat substance abuse, while helping young people involved with drugs through rehabilitative programs such as North Dakota’s Drug Courts.

Hoeven chairs the Governors’ Biofuels Coalition and serves on the Executive Committee of the National Governors Association. He previously served as chair of the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission, the Midwestern Governors Association, and the National Governors Association’s Health and Human Services Committee and Natural Resources Committee.

Born in Bismarck, North Dakota, Hoeven earned a bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College in 1979 and a master’s degree in business administration from Northwestern University in 1981. He served as executive vice president of First Western Bank in Minot from 1986 to 1993, and from 1993 to 2000, served as president and CEO of the Bank of North Dakota, during which time the bank’s assets grew from $900 million to $1.6 billion.

Hoeven and his wife Mical (Mikey) have two children, Marcela and Jack.

08. Gunn Will A

Will A. Gunn was sworn in as the General Counsel for the Department of Veterans Affairs on May 26, 2009. As the Department’s top lawyer, Mr. Gunn oversees approximately 450 attorneys within the Office of the General Counsel, which provides proactive legal advice and representation to the Department concerning all aspects of its program and management responsibilities. The General Counsel supervises over 700 employees in Washington, D.C., and in field locations across the United States.

Mr. Gunn is a retired Air Force colonel, having served as a military lawyer in the Air Force Judge Advocate General Corps. In 2008, he founded the Gunn Law Firm to provide representation to military members and veterans in a range of administrative matters.

A native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Mr. Gunn graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy with military honors in 1980. The Glideslope station for runway 10

The Glideslope station for runway 10

An instrument landing system (ILS) is a ground-based instrument approach system that provides precision guidance to an aircraft approaching and landing on a runway, using a combination of radio signals and, in many cases, high-intensity lighting arrays to enable a safe landing during instrument meteorological conditions (IMC), such as low ceilings or reduced visibility due to fog, rain, or blowing snow.

Instrument approach procedure charts (or approach plates) are published for each ILS approach, providing pilots with the needed information to fly an ILS approach during instrument flight rules (IFR) operations, including the radio frequencies used by the ILS components or navaids and the minimum visibility requirements prescribed for the specific approach.

Radio-navigation aids must keep a certain degree of accuracy (set by international standards of CAST/ICAO); to assure this is the case, flight inspection organizations periodically check critical parameters with properly equipped aircraft to calibrate and certify ILS precision.

For my degree capstone project the entire class works as a team to build a website for a real customer. I am the team leader of the programming sub group.

This was the first meeting of our sub group. We were making final revisions to the technical requirements document. We also discussed our next challenge the data dictionary.

We held the meeting at a Starbucks. I know, how cliche right? Ha ha. I commented that I thought Sylvia's drink was guacamole. Without missing a beat she said no, it was wasabi.

1880 The Allan Shipping Line, James Allan, Merchant & Shipowner, Glasgow. Trust Disposition

1880 The Allan Shipping Line, James Allan, Merchant & Shipowner, Glasgow. Trust Disposition

The Allan Shipping Line

1880 James Allan, Merchant & Shipowner, Glasgow. Original Trust Disposition. James Allan was the son of Sandy Allan who formed the 'Allan Shipping Line'. The company was the 5th biggest shipping line in the world. James Allan is named in 'Glasgow's Greatest 100 Men'

1808-1880
Eldest of the five sons of Alexander Allan, founder of the Allan Line shipping business, James Allan was born in Saltcoats. He worked in the family business, trading between the Clyde and Canada, and personally captained the barque "Arabian", built in 1837.
On retiral from the sea he oversaw the shore-based aspects of the business, where his skill lay in sound judgment and judicious personnel management. A modest man, he took little part in public affairs but did undertake the chairmanship of both the Clyde Pilot Board and the Clyde Lighthouse Trust.
When failing health obliged him to withdraw from active involvement in business, he took up summer residence at Skelmorlie, dying here in August 1880. He was survived by four sons and four daughters.
THE commercial and maritime supremacy of Great Britain among the nations has been long acknowledged. Her great home trade, her extensive foreign commerce, and her unequalled merchant shipping, which year by year has increased, have combined to place her in this pre-eminent position. The last half century has witnessed an extraordinary development of each of these branches of trade, but their expansion has not been alike great; the progress of the nation's home and foreign commerce cannot be compared with the growth of her merchant shipping. While within that period the home trade has grown proportionally to her population and the exports and imports of the country have multiplied in value about seven-fold, the effective carrying capacity of her shipping has increased more than twenty-fold, allowance being made for the superiority of steam over sailing ships. The history of this remarkable expansion of the nation's shipping in its earlier stages, and indeed down to quite recent times, might be read in the history, if it were written, of a comparatively small number of her sons, for the shipping property of the country was, until recent years, in few hands, and its development was due to the enterprise and skill of a number of our countrymen - small in comparison to the vast multitude who now form the shipowners of the kingdom.
In the records of the men to whom we owe the early and great development of our merchant fleets, the Allan family must always occupy an honourable place.
The originator of the Allan Line of ships, the father of the subject of this notice, Alexander Allan, was born at Saltcoats, Ayrshire, in 1780.
He was a fine example of the old Ayrshire stock from whom so many of our successful merchants have sprung. Strong of frame, sagacious, self-reliant, and enterprising, with strict notions of honesty and honour, Alexander Allan was the sort of man to strike out from the humble rank in which he was born, and to make his way in the world.
He was by trade a ship carpenter, and for a time pursued his calling at sea, but at an early age he rose to the position of captain and part-owner of the craft in which he sailed. During the Peninsular war the brig which he then commanded, the "Jean" (named after his wife, Jean Crawford), was employed carrying cattle and other supplies to the coast of Spain for the British army. The vessels thus employed were usually put under the protection of an armed convoy to ensure their safety; but impatient of the restraint and delay to his voyages which this imposed upon him, it was Captain Allan's practice to separate himself from the protecting warship and pursue his voyage unaccompanied. His trips to Spain, although somewhat hazardous, were invariably successful, and were performed in shorter time than would have been possible under convoy, where the slowest vessel regulated the pace for all the others.
The "Jean" was the pioneer of the now well-known line to which Captain Allan gave the name. The more ordinary employment of this little vessel was in the Canadian trade, then in its infancy - a trade which the vessels of the Allan Line have ever since regularly pursued.
Captain Allan in his brig made spring and fall voyages between Montreal and Greenock. The tiny cargoes which formed the lading of the craft of this early period in the Canada trade were to a large extent bought on ship's account, and the master of the ship was at once a navigator and a merchant trader.
The manufactured goods which were exported to the colony were the property of the dry goods merchants, many of whom had houses on both sides of the Atlantic; but to a great extent the coal, iron, herrings, sugar and other West India produce, which formed part of the outward cargo, and much of the wheat, peas, flour, pot ashes, and wood with which the vessels were laden homewards, were bought and sold by the master of the ship.
In thi
