Baby Bird on Bike at Kelim
We went back to Kelim Turkish restaurant with just a couple of days left in Basel, rounding up the places we'd miss most. And I'm so glad we did because in the week or so since our first visit, Kelim had gotten itself three adorable little mascots. Baby birds who must have been there during our first visit (but quietly tucked away in their nest growing feathers) had fledged and had made Kelim's courtyard and the alley just outside their playground. Mama bird stuck close, and we once heard her give a righteous screaming-at to one of Kelim's waiters who had accidentally stepped too close to one of her babies. We spent the entire meal watching the birds, and watching the people watching the birds. Everyone in the place, staff and customers alike, would laugh together when one of the babies would get brave and give a mighty flap, then hit the ground with a tiny thud, and we'd all nudge each other and grin when one of them did make it to some lofty perch two or three feet off the ground. You can keep your soccer, in fact your whole TV set: this is my idea of mealtime entertainment.

I have taken off it's Carrier, so don't think it can't make a mountain trip, it can be fixed back anytime :-)
Brompty carrying shirts and hangers to the dry cleaners
I know dry cleaning is evil, but for someone who cycles everywhere, doesn't drive a car and recycles (including all those shirt hangers!) I do try my best for the planet.
Plus - I hate ironing!

Reims - 26th August
Reims Notre-Dame Cathedral
26th August - Arcis-sur-Aube to Reims
It was only 15 miles north to Reims, just over an hour, so I thought I could make it there before it got too dark and I could wander round town for a while. I made it to the outskirts of Reims without a problem but like many times before, road signs are not made for cyclists. I got completely lost in the suburbs and then when I finally got back on the right road, it pointed towards the motorway for "Reims - Centre Ville". It got so bad that even my cycle computer stopped working, insisting that I was doing 15.8 mph even when I wasn't moving. After a fairly unpleasant tour around the outskirts of Reims and between a dirty canal and the motorway I finally made it to the centre, 25 miles of cycling after Epernay - 10 miles over my estimate. However, Reims' Notre-Dame Cathedral dragged me away from my tiredness. It looks almost exactly like the Notre-Dame in Paris but is even bigger. I found the youth-hostel easily and not long after I had arrived another guy came in to share the room. Another cyclist! However, after being put in the shade by other cyclist who had vastly superior equipment, experience and the like, this guy made me look professional. He was cycling from Cologne in Germany to Paris, in 5 days, Reims being at the end of his fourth day. All he had with him was a rucksack (he was meeting friends in Paris that had his other luggage) that he strapped to his bike with string. He had no tent and so when I was sheltering in my tent all day when it was raining, he was almost drowning in a forest. His clothes were still wet two days later he said. I had no reason to doubt him.
27th August - Reims to Prisches
Reims likes to call itself "The Crossroads of Europe" and nowhere was this more evident than when I was leaving Reims: Turn left for Paris, straight on for Brussels, turn right for Luxembourg. I chose the Brussels route, heading vaguely towards Lille and then Dunkerque and Calais on the last three days of my trip. There isn't a lot going on north of Reims. Just a lot of hills and fields. The further north I got the more it became like Normandie, even down to the cow muck covering the roads and the smell that goes with it. I arrived at a tiny village called Prisches where there was a campsite which I shared with a campervan. For the second time, there was no reception, just a shower block and no one turned up to collect any money - excellent.
On my way out of Reims I had finally found a "Decathlon" store which as the name suggest sells sport equipment. This was where I could finally buy new elastic for my tent pole which had broken 2 weeks earlier. So with plenty of time before it would get dark, I started threading the new elastic through the poles. About half an hour later it was getting dark and I was still struggling with the last section of pole which refused to allow the elastic through. Despite having all the time in the world to think about things whilst cycling, it was only when I was about to snap the pole in half in frustration that I realised that you don't actually need the elastic going through the pole to make it work - the elastic is just there to help you and stop the poles getting seperated. So I set up the tent without the elastic and it worked brilliantly. TWO WEEKS of sleeping in a tent that barely stood up and... It didn't matter, it was working now.
28th August - Prisches to Houplines
I left early in the morning again, partly because I had no food for breakfast and so wanted to get some food as soon as possible. Sunday 28th August must be National Cycling Day in France or something because there were more cyclist on the road that day than I had seen on my whole trip. They seemed to be in groups of 4 or 5 wearing matching tops so I guess there are a lot of cycling clubs in this part of France. Certainly it was very pleasant/easy cycling - easy hills and nice countryside. It wasn't too far too Denain where I had lunch and where the hills completely stopped. I suppose this is the start of the flat lowlands of Holland and Belgium. Although it was completely flat, it was still a fair ride on to Lille but I managed to arrive there at about 4pm so I had plenty of time to wander around the city a bit. Its quite a nice city and it would have been nice to stay the night there to spend some more time there but the tourist offices were closed and my "Cycling France" guide book (I wouldn't recommend it) doesn't say anything about the north of France.
So at about 6pm I headed north-west towards Dunkerque hoping to find a campsite at some point. This was also towards the Belgian border! Exciting times. I reached the border not long later but it didn't look very interesting so I only stayed for a minute or two before heading parallel to the border. The towns of Houplines and Armentieres run along the borderto the west and I checked the town plans that can always be found in French towns

At 19, The Film Student Has A Near-Death Experience
A true-to-life parable by B.S. Wise
This night, more than two decades ago, RRR*rrrr*rriding my little scooter on the rain-slicked streets of Eagle Rock, California, heading to the college library to watch mad bloodied Viet Nam war documentaries and work more on the my surreal Tarkofskian-Jodorowskyish-Lynchian sci-fi war screenplay/poem/book/reve, it had begun to rain harder, and, huddled in my scarf and jeans jacket, full and downhill speed ahead, I plunged helmetless through a dark intersection lit only by a swaying green light and a streetlamp sputtering like spark-wood
.......SSSSCCCRRReeecCHCHHC**!!*** *CRRAJVDWSKKFFFFKKKFKFK..........
hah....hahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa....ha*BKCHHRSSSHH**KSSSSHH!!!
Brakes locked, I skidded instantly into the oncoming metal of a Vintage Dodge 1972 Station Wagon, and my left leg crumpled against the sharp wing of it, shattering my femur into bone shards sent screaming through the flesh of my inner-thigh. While my scooter quickly disappeared under the car.
I had left gravity...
tumbling...
tumbling...
tumbling through the air, with a fire in the mind.
An odd sensation, for I thought I 'd reached the ground safely and was rolling, rolling somehow protecting my head, but no, catapulting in a great whiz-whirling somersault through the air...
*BAM!* I hit the light pole and crumpled to the street onto my broken leg, which, now unsupported by the femur, snapped at the tibia and fibula into two clean breaks. The leg disappeared under me, broken backwards at the thigh.
Well, I thought I'd lost it, gone was my leg.
I began screaming: "OH MY GOD!! MY LEGGGGGG!!! OH MY GOD MY LEG!! OH MY GOD MY LEG!!! YOU TORE OFF MY LEEEEEEEGG!!!"
And yelling, "YOU COME BACK HERE!!! OH MY GOD MY LEG!!!" at the driver, himself in severe duress, slowly dragging my bike under his car, which scraped and scratched at the street as he slowly drove in a wide bewildered circle.
This man, so like God in the shape and movement of this story, turned out to be an 82-year-old grandfather who rarely drove, his eye-sight failing, but had taken the old boat out just that night to fetch some medicine from the for his poor bed-ridden wife.
(O, who knows where even our best intentions will lead us.)
In unending fire of pain, I managed to lift this non-leg out from under me, and saw it there to be all higgely-piggely and zig-zaggedy and just a completely sad and utterly f*cked-up looking leg.
Soaked in rain imagined to be blood, I had a delusion of my foot falling off and my life's water draining away into the gutter and coursing on into the boundless sea....
But then I realized that it was just my shoe that had fallen off from the end of this infernal pain machine leg, and I sunk back towards the curb, adrenalin rush waxing into shock and madness, to experience a rapid-fire series of very lucid and empirically rationalizing epiphanies:
Thinking back to my screenplay, I became excited that I was actually experiencing a small taste of what a soldier whose leg has just been blown off from a land-mine might be feeling and that this was "great stuff" for the writing and film and well because of this event and possibly having to live my life with one leg I would never be called to service should there be a draft in coming wars and any way this isn't even half as bad as that and wasn't all that a jolly good relief and living with one leg or in a wheelchair is so much better than being dead and wow despite my lack of helmet and the simple common sense to wear one I had managed to not to hit my head so thank the Earth Mother and Great Omnisexual Oneness of The Universe for that.
At that moment, I was lifted up and held there by the Living Embodiment of Good Will and angelic potential in all human beings... the local high school football coach, who had just been walking by when the accident happened.
"Lean on me son," he said with a kind, strong, deep voice tenured from years of comforting injuries on the playing field. As I did, a great golden light emanated from his strong coach's arms, illuminating, calming, and warming us like a crackling campfire...
A strange curtain of onlookers with blackened eyes had gathered around us swaying gently, mouths agape, as if submerged zombies lit by a flickering TV set.
This static zombie curtain was then parted by a Biker, who, at first, appeared to me a dark angel come clad in leather to claim my soul for Satan's domain. Revealed to be also an Agent of Good Will, hell-bent and free, he started screaming at me:
"OH MAN! OH MAN! OH MAN! The same thing happened to ME! MAN! I was ridin' along, saw the whole thing, MAN! and *SccrrreeecCHCH* Bam! SAME THING! "
(Now, some of you may recognize these lines and this scenario as being very similar to a throwaway scene in David Lynch's "Wild At Heart." However, I submit to you

Bike Brake Adjustment
- Bicycle brake systems are used to slow down or stop a bicycle. There have been various types of brakes used throughout history, and several are still in use today. The three main types are: rim brakes, disc brakes, and drum brakes.
- The process of adapting or becoming used to a new situation
- alteration: the act of making something different (as e.g. the size of a garment)
- the act of adjusting something to match a standard
- A small alteration or movement made to achieve a desired fit, appearance, or result
- making or becoming suitable; adjusting to circumstances
Weinmann brake lever covers white 1970s
Very hard to find these days. Photographed under indoor lighting so the color looks more ivory color here, but they are actually still quite White. The cable exit opening is around 8 mm. in diameter which was large enough to fit the Weinmann levers with integrated cable adjustment stacks.
White was the color used for the levers on Motobecane's Grand Record bikes of the mid 1970s. This new-old stock pair was a rare (and expensive) find on eBay a few years ago. They surface so infrequently in this color that I simply had to purchase them - or regret missing the opportunity in later years. I'm saving these in a small sealed plastic bag - just in case I ever decide to accurately restore my Motobecane "Grand Record".
Better Brakes
Much as I like Tektro's RX4.1 levers on my Lager, their 510A calipers are rubbish, frankly!
The finish is poor and they don't offer decent adjustment, so are spongy as a result.
I've upgraded to a vastly superior set of Shimano BRR450 calipers, which have a lovely satin finish, a higher quality feel and proper toe adjustment.
They have excellent bite and power and are a brilliant upgrade for ?24.

?? (Humility - in Japanese)
Frustrations mount in my present physical condition.
Foot & ankle in a cast = limited mobility, slow, strenuous, potentially dangerous.
In-cast-erated comes to mind,
Moderately dependent follows,
Temporarily banned from sporting activity quickly ensues.
Lack of physical pursuits strikes me most
As a large part of me thrives
On the sheer thrill of challenging my athletic ability,
Stressing the fibers, stretching the ligaments, forcing the speed,
Riding the accomplishment wave that a good run provides,
Or the suicidal high that a rock-littered mountain bike trail presents.
Instead, my crutches are confronted by the nightmare that a staircase becomes,
My right leg weighed down by the unfair shift in load bestowed upon it,
My arms strain to swing my frame in an unfamiliar now repetitive motion,
My mind cringes at the work it takes to shower.............
Stand in the tub on one leg while the other hangs lazily,
Cast encased in a protective rain sleeve….protection from possible mold and unpleasant smell.
My state of mind = disheartened……….
………..but encouraged by the shallow reality of my circumstance:
Down but not broken; Slow but not static. Temporary but not permanent. Embarrassing, but common.
LUCKY but not ILL-FATED. HEALING but not INCURABLE. BLESSED but not ABANDONED.
It may be hard, but not impossible.
It could have been deeper……could have been worse…..
What is two weeks of temporary frustration?
Compared to a lifetime of mobility loss that others less fortunate experience?
I think of what my mother would say at my annoyance: “Be thankful. Be humbled. Be less-dramatic. Overcome.”
I’m in it for the short haul. I’m a few weeks from 100% mobile again.
I’m capable of appreciation, open to positive thinking, and surrounded by meaningful motivation.
These crutches are tools necessary to this sport called physical healing,
Just like a bat is necessary to baseball or a board to surfing.
I am more humble. More understanding. More conscious to the fact that this is nothing.
This too shall pass.
Humility = Insignificance. Practice makes perfect.
1993 XR650L Mt. Rainier
OldManTravels 1993 Honda XR650L dual sport motorcycle. Mt. Rainier. September forest service road riding can be darned cold in the morning by late September up above 6,000 feet. The jeep road crosses the top of Darland Mountain at 7,000 feet. From this lofty perch in the Cascade Mountains you can see Mt. Rainier; Mt. Adams; and the Goat Rocks wilderness peaks. A pair of binoculars, camera, lunch, and a good map. Fun way to spend a day.
This is a great loop ride. Ride up the North Fork of Ahtanum Creek; cross the top of Darland Mountain; then return down the Middle Fork of Ahtanum Creek. All land to the south of you is Yakama Indian Reservation land. Top of Darland Mountain is at: N46 30 50 W121 12 35.
Note: I bought the XR650L new from a Honda dealer in Eastern Washington. Each dealer was allocated one XR650L when they first came out so I bought this bike sight unseen from that dealer. I had owned many Honda motorbikes before including the XR500L (which even with compression release was a hard kick start task on a steep trail). The XR650L has electric start and is perfect for forest service roads and jeep trails. It now has 10K miles on it.
Update: July 2008. I sold my 16 year old XR650L purchased in June of 1992. Time had come to hang up the helmet. I will now put all of my energy into road trips; hiking; and some more mountain backpacking trips.

Ladybug Ladybugs Lady Bug Metal Bike Motorcycle License Plate Frame Holder
Give your bike a touch of style and individuality with this high quality premium license plate frame made of polished steel. This frame has a durable metal construction and a shiny chrome finish, which gives it a unique and expensive look. The eye-catching sturdy construction of this frame puts feeble plastic frames to shame. It weights about 7 ounces and measures about 7.5 x 5 inches outside. The distance between two holes is about 6 inches. The frame fits most standard USA motorcycles. This frame is brand new and well packaged. The lettering and artwork are done with weather and car wash resistant vinyl that is waterproof and won't fade and will last for many years. This frame also makes a great gift. Sophisticated and trendy, your frame will be the perfect finishing touch on any motorcycle.

On the way to bokeh heaven...
Right, I learned a couple of things tonight:
- Bike lights have more than one purpose
- The nikkor 55mm f/2.8 lens has useless bokeh stopped down (no circles).
- Focussing on a stalk about a mm in diameter at f/2.8 is a right pain in the ass.
- My next camera will have live view for these circumstances
- Ladybugs stink (literally!)
- Above mentioned critters are quick!
- A tripod probably works better than the completely wobbly set-up I improvised.
- I really like Nikon's remote control.
Picture/strobist info: Bike lights/head torches with various filters were stuffed in cupboard about 5m behind the beetle. Shot at 1/160th, f/2.8. Off-camera flash (SB 600 at 1/64th) from the right, hand-held. Triggered with PT-04 poverty wizards.

Enter the Fiesta Movement
2011 Ford Fiesta
May 3, 2009
My dad use to take us down this secret back road on our way to our Grandparents when we were kids. He would tell us stories how he use to race down these crooked roads in his 1968 GTO that was olive green.
When I got older I would take the same route to the bay area in my 1992 Ford Thunderbird 5.0 with low profile tires as it hugged the turns speeding through here as it was a lot of fun as Imagined
how my father felt racing his GTO here.
I then later got a 2001 Chevy Cavalier in 2005 and I was not happy with it here. It felt weak going down this road. That car failed me in every way as I went back to riding my bike everywhere.
So now I'm back to my secret road and I had a blast racing through here in the Ford Fiesta. I felt like i was free as the tires hugged each left and right turn.
I'll be taking these back road more often now. Maybe I'll let my dad role with me here and try it out as well.
MEMORABLE CARS
Seen at the Annual Classic Car, truck, Motor bike and Hot rod show in Arnold, CA. People of a certain age, such as me, crowded the place and reminisced about our own cars that we wished we had kept. I loved the get up of the original model Corvair, which included a window tray with a burger and coke reminding me of the sixties drive-ins. A mint condition 1957 Jaguar sports coupe won the first prize. The red 1941 Chevy made me wish I had kept my first car, a blue/tan 1954 Chevy Belaire. Another favorite of mine was a 1936 Ford sedan, parked by the side of a 1936 Ford pickup. There was a Studebaker Avanti, the last car model made by Studebaker before the company folded in 1963. A 1956 Chevy Belaire was a car I had coveted when I let go of my 54 Belaire, but instead chose to be practical and bought a Volkswagen which truly was a bug. Those were the days!

supposedly a "H2 Hummer Limited Edition" mountain bike, i upgraded the fork, shifters, brake levers, cables and housing, crankset, tires, rims and hubs.
I bet you're thinking "did you get this because you bought a hummer?" well not exactly, i saw this bike in an article and was attracted at it's ability to fold.
the bike can be folded in half by the qr lever just below the seat. it can fit in a back seat of a car or a trunk easily. i've also tested it on the trails of northern california, and it'll hold its own on the trails.

Moments after getting home from 7 days in Korea, we loaded up rides for the Cool Davis green festival..we towed them 2 miles home at dusk, as the poor lighting suggests. The 7 foot dia. German wheel travelling WIDE on it's non-top-heavy side. It trailered marvelously, though it was heavy and thus slooow on the few uphills..totaling well over 500 pounds, And I had the kiddies on my back and behind me to boot... kinda tricky on the street and on the bikepath...
As of this hour, I had seen two sunsets, two sunrises, both sides of the Pacific, and was @35 hours into a 41 hour Trans-Pacific Sunday...Whew!!

[03:57] Alayni Axelrad looked up from her book and raised a red eyebrow. She was surprised to see him, she hadn't in months, though she had caught a glimse of his coat darting around a corner once, "Ye threw a rock at me bike." she said flatly. "And why are ye here? Ye need medical attention o some kind?"
[04:01] Shilandar Deledda raised a brow at the feline and just smiled, flicking his tongue oer his lips while eyes disguised in dark brown glimmer scanned her pawprint covered breasts from the other side of the counter. "Actually, kicked... an' no. I was just looking for someone, temptress."
[04:02] Alayni Axelrad now raised both brows and set the book down, spine up, on the counter, "TEMPTRESS? I never be temptin ye at anything Chi. Who were ye lookin for? And when are ye giving back me necklaces. Dinna think I have forgotten it."
[04:06] Shilandar Deledda smirked and leaned in, a hand flat on the counter while the other pointed down. Meeting her glistening blue, almost glowing eyes with a wide smile while the digit nearly poked her between the tits. "Mmm... no not tempting anything at all... dear lady, if I were a lesser man I'd jump you here and now guns or no guns." he didn't even answer the rest of her questions, taking the finger back before she could bite it.
[04:11] Alayni Axelrad almost choked at that statement, though she could not wipe the amused smirk from her face at how quickly he retracted his finger. "If ye were any lesser man? Now Chi, dinna play innocent on me. I have heard testimonies o countless women just how much o a "lesser" man ye be jumpin em in the streets. I dinna buy that excuse at all. I swear I never be wearin anythin like this in...well..ever, and the day I do ye come waltzin back into town." she rolled her eyes and propped her heeled foot against the wall, picking up the book again and resuming her reading, quite preturbed he had completely ignored her question about her necklace. She popped the candy cane back in her mouth and waved a hand in the general direction in the double doors leading to the intensive care unit, "Go ahead and feel free to go look for whomever ye were lookin for." she grumbled.
[04:15] Shilandar Deledda tilts hs head towards the double doors, frowning a bit. "Doubt I'd find her in there. She'd rather die than be brought through that way." His hand dipped down after he spoke though, reaching to swipe her candy cane right from her mouth. "I'll have ya know that it was an implication of self control, not tendencies. Of course I'd throw you against this wall and slam that tight, round ass until you yowled.... but if I tried it right now, you'd shoot me." Head nodded as he lenaed over the counter again, and whether she had saved her candy cane or not flickd his empty hand through her red hair.
[04:24] Alayni Axelrad frowned as he swiped the candy from her mouth, "Now what ye go and do that for? I was enjoyin that. Was the only thing I got for Christmas and ye canna even let me keep it?" she sighed and closed the book as his hand flicked through her hair, she retracted back, but just a little. "Well yer right about me shootin ye. Would put a bullet right in her balls I would. I dinna need round 2 o what happened in the park." she had known him to rape women who had guns before, but she didn't press it. She was in no way trying to be encouraging of such behavior. She smiled pleasantly, though slightly forced, she she was still annoyed about the candy cane, "So then Mr Chi, if ye already knew your friend wouldnt be here, then what can I do for ye exactly?"
[04:28] Shilandar Deledda laughs and shrugs, twirling the candy cane on his fingers. "I don't now, suppose I can't convince you to put your mouth to work on me if I asked nicely, now could I?" The man gave her a wink of one brown eye before he handed back the candy cane. Well, reached over to put the long end between her lips, at any rate. "I'm just lookin' around. I don't come here often, I"m sure you noticed... an' aside from that, you have a distinct scent... didja know that perfume you use leaves almost a trail behind ya?" He knew it wasn't always perfume but her natural scent, but didn't say as much, just chuckling softly as the candy cane was returned. "An' I know you don't -need- a repeat... unless you've just been that lacking in sex as of late."
[04:34] Alayni Axelrad glared at him as he asked her to go down on him, and didn't dignify it with a response. Afterall, he had her necklace and didnt respond to HER. She cleared her throat, dismissing it entirely, and accepted the candy cane back between her lips, slightly pacified at the gesture. "I dinna wear perfume" was all she would say, not giving details on why she smelled thus, because he hadn't asked. She blanched at his latest comment. She hadn't had sex in..

It was originally purchased by a woman in Italy during a holiday where she toured around the countryside.
