Isana smiles
Today has been a banner day. This morning when I got up there were no overnight accidents to find. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. I was so proud. Shortly after our morning walk, however, she conveniently provided us with an easy-to-obtain stool sample. LOL That's alright, we needed one for her first trip to the veterinarian anyway. ;)
My husband and I took both dogs for a long walk around the neighborhood and it went quite well. She's not fighting the leash at all anymore and is curious about her surroundings. She smiled nearly the whole way, except when cars went by - they're huge and kind of scary.
After our walk I took a quick shower and we loaded her up in her new crate (thanks neighbor! I can't express how much I appreciate it since it was so helpful this morning) in the back of the car and we headed for the vet's office. We weren't sure how she would handle it since she's not been around people and has been kept separated from other animals other than Casper. She was a champ!! She walked right in and got acquainted with all the other animals in the waiting room, and even was nice to a little girl who was curious about her. It was awesome. I had a little trouble getting her to stay on the scale, but we found out she weighs 20.8 lbs. Wow - big girl! LOL Casper weighs about 16.
The nurse was impressed with how well she behaved and even managed to get a really cute smiling picture of her. The veterinarian didn't seem to really understand the implications of having rescued her from a puppy mill and observed that she appeared to have come into heat at least once (uh, yeah) and assumed she had had baby shots at her old home (um, I seriously doubt it). She tolerated being poked and prodded in some very uncomfortable places with great aplomb and was given a very clean bill of health; her eyes look good and he thinks the weeping will stop, her teeth look good (which is a big surprise, considering her background), her spay incision has healed up very well, and he was surprised that she was so calm and cooperative (as we were!) for the exam. I am so proud I could bust!
We came home and let her rest for a little bit but all she wanted to do was to go for a walk. So we did. Afterward I managed to get a smiling picture of my own to share. Then we went for another walk. LOL She just can't get enough of the great outdoors. This time I even took the camera and she was patient and stopped every time I had to frame a photo - no pulling. Wow.
Now she's sacked out in front of the couch where she can see me immediately if I move and wake her up. She's quite content and happy right now, and that makes me feel quite content and happy.
Curetasian Smile
dad recorded from c.1500, but probably much older, from child's speech, nearly universal and probably prehistoric (cf. Welsh tad, Ir. daid, Czech, L., Gk. tata, Lith. tete, Skt. tatah all of the same meaning).
Curetes from L. Curetes, from Gk. Kouretes, pl. of Koures, lit. "youthful," related to koros "youth, child."
The Curetes were five brothers:
Heracles (no relation to the famous hero and son of Zeus)
Paeonaeus
Epimedes
Iasius
Idas
Legend has it that they were not born but sprang from the earth when it was wet by the first tears of the infant Zeus. This symbolizes that they were native sons of the earth. This is why tradition speaks of the Curetes as the first inhabitants of Crete and even, through folk etymology, that the words Crete and Cretan are derived from the word Curetes (C-u-retes). The word Curetas (the singular of Curetes) is also very similar to the word Kouros, which meant “young man” in Ancient Greek, while Kore meant “young woman” (cf. modern Greek “kori”, meaning “daughter”).
The Curetes are said to have been the first inhabitants of Crete and the founders of the first civilzation on the island. According to the myths, the Curetes were responsible for every discovery of the time, and helped in the organization of social life in Crete. The Curetes played an important part in the birth and upbringing of Zeus, the greatest of the Twelve Gods of Olympus. When the time came for Rhea to give birth, she chose a cave on Crete and asked the native Curetes for help. The Curetes guarded the entrance to the cave so no-one could approach, and undertook to look after the infant Zeus until he came of age. Sleepless guardians, the Curetes danced when the baby cried, stamping their feet, or, in another version, beat drums and clashed their metal shields to cover the wails with their noise. Cronus, the father of Zeus, had received a prophecy that one of his children would overthrow him, so it was vital that he did not know that Zeus was alive, or the holy infant would be in danger.
