One of New York City's best known apartment buildings, The Dakota was constructed from OCtober 25, 1880 to October 27, 1884--a time when the upper West Side was sparsely populated. George Henry Griebel and Karl Jacobson of Henry Janeway Hardenbergh was commissioned to do the design for Edward Clark, head of the Singer Sewing Machine Company whose firm also designed the Plaza Hotel.

According to popular legend, the Dakota was so named because at the time it was built, the Upper West Side of Manhattan was sparsely inhabited and considered as remote as the Dakota Territory. However, the earliest recorded appearance of this account is in a 1933 newspaper story. It is more likely that the building was named "The Dakota" because of Clark's fondness for the names of the new western states and territories. The building's high gables and deep roofs with a profusion of dormers, terracotta spandrels and panels, niches, balconies and balustrades give it a North German Renaissance character, an echo of a Hanseatic townhall. The Dakota is built in a square-shape around a central courtyard, accessible through the arched passage of the main entrance, a porte cochere large enough that horse-drawn carriages could pass.

Originally, the Dakota had 65 apartments with four to twenty rooms, no two alike. The general layout of the apartments is in the French style of the period, with all major rooms accessible from a hall or corridor, allowing for a natural migration of guests. The principal rooms such as parlors or the master bedroom face the street, while the dining room, the kitchen, and other auxiliary rooms are oriented on the courtyard. Apartments are thus aired from two sides, which was a relative novelty in New York at the time.

The Dakota is well known through popular culture--best known as the home of former Beatle John Lennon, starting in 1973. He was murdered outside the building on December 8, 1980 by Mark David Chapman and is memoraliazed in the nearby Strawberry Fields of Central Park. Director Roman Polanski filmed the exteriors for Rosemary's Baby at the Dakota, but the interiors were created in a Hollywood soundstage since the building does not allow filming inside. Other well known one-time residents of the Dakota have include Yoko Ono, Andrew Carnegi Lauren Bacall, Leonard Bernstein, Bono, Connie Chung and Maury Povich, Roberta Flack, Judy Garland, Judy Holliday, John Madden, Boris Karloff, Mills Lane, Gilda Radner, Paul Simon and Jerry Seinfeld.

In 2007, The Dakota Apartments was ranked #87 on the AIA 150 America's Favorite Architecture list.

The Dakota Apartments were designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1979.

I like singing since I am small and I been learning singing from one of the top singer of HongKong (50-70's) Miss Wei Sau Han-Winnie Siu for few years now.And i still taking lesson whenever my teacher come back from Hong Kong
She is great n treated me very nice. This is my luck to be her student indeed.

Many times, I am regret that i listen to my parent not to be a singer when I was in my teenage.Because I was in Taiwan at that time and my first singing teacher like me so much that he want to make me a successful singer. But my parent dont like the idea have a entertainer in their family.

My first teacher is a very nice guy, he is the host of a hit TV program in Taiwan at that time called Disco, Disco. He treated me so well that I still miss him up to now. But i lost contact with him. If any one of you know him,pls let me know. His name in translation is called G-Wei.

I still remember i only go for class for 1 night, the next class when i go to the music college, the lady assistant told me. My god you are the only student the teacher ask her to apply a singer licence from government with just 1 lesson,very unusual this is why the other staffs all come to see who is this little young kid that night.

PS. In Taiwan at that time, it is still under Marshall Law. All singers need a Licence from government otherwise forbide to sing. The condition is to be able to sing at least 3 Nationalist songs out of the 40 compulsory songs.They are very political theme.And if you do public performer, you need to sing at least 1 of those song then you are allow to sing other songs. And many many popular songs are black-list not allow to sing in public performance.

Because the government agency feel either they are too depress, too sad, too down,too unhealthy,too weird..etc... cool...can you belief that...ha

Few of the famous singers have sung some of those forbidden songs in public and was put into jail for weeks.At that time, they call this Song Jail.

Boy, I was so young and I am from Hong Kong, I dont like Politic n at that time i dont like those songs at all. I only learn 1song-becaasue it is a popular theme song for a Movie Less political tone n word. It is call The Plum Flowers.i did not continue because of my parent and this kind of requirement. I am deeply regret now, now is too late to be a singer.
