Release Date: 03/06/2007 Rating: Nr The Wiggles, that wacky outfit wowing kids from Down Under, welcome preschoolers for a lively, loopy musical fiesta on their sixth release, Dance Party. In addition to Murray, Greg, Jeff, and Anthony, Oz's answer to the Fab Four, chiming in on this 15-song charmer of a dance- and sing-along are the usual wiggly suspects--Henry the Octopus, Wags the Dog, Captain Feathersword, and the remarkably light-on-her-feet hostess of the party, Dorothy the Dinosaur. Along with all the fancy footwork, expect the frenetic pace of all Wiggles offerings (nobody's attention span is apt to be challenged by a 15-segment, 40-minute video), but also expect a less polished production than in previous titles. The gang's unfamiliar hair styles and other telltale clues bear the trappings of an early performance. Which in no way dilutes the fun-for-all delirium. In fact, the goofier-than-ever gags and graceful child dance troupes featured on a couple of numbers here propel this tape into top-shelf Wiggles territory. Songs include "Can You Point Your Fingers and Do the Twist?," "Wags the Dog," "Five Little Joeys," "Di Dicki Do Dum," "I'm a Cow," "Do the Flap," "On Your Holiday," "Hat on My Head," "The Magic Bag," "Brown Girl in the Ring," "Georgia's Song," "Our Boat Is Rocking on the Sea," "Nicky Nacky Nocky Noo," "Dorothy's Dance Party," and "The Big Red Car." --Tammy La Gorce (11) The Wiggles Paige is pretty active overall - in fact, she's not one to settle down for a nap unless you take all stimulus away. That being said, she does watch some television. She's grown fond of two shows, The Doodlebops and The Wiggles. She spends most of her time dancing to all the music that's in the two shows. Sometimes she includes mom and dad in the mix, but most of the time we're given specific instruction to just watch. While casually surfing around last weekend I saw that The Wiggles have a web site. A little more digging led me to their tour dates in the United States (they're from Sydney Australia). Specifically that they'd be performing in Denver the next weekend. I hopped on over to Ticketmaster and purchased three tickets on the spot. I said best available, which this late in the game meant nosebleed section. We made an entire day of the event. We took the light rail downtown, which Paige really enjoyed. Then we had lunch and walked around the 16th Street Mall. There were lots of Cinco de Mayo celebrations going on as well. Then we took the free bus back to the convention center for the show. At first Paige wasn't quite sure what to think of all this. Eventually she realized that those were the actual Wiggles up on stage. She hopped over to dad's knee and started bouncing around to her favorite tunes. The floor was dark, and she was scared of it at first. Over time though the groove got to her and she eventually wanted to dance on the floor with dad. And, as it goes at home, eventually dad was instructed to just watch. We took the train back to our car, and shortly thereafter Paige was crashed out. We drove around for a while to give her a nap, and then had dinner at a local pizza restaurant, Little Ricci's. What a great day full of fun and excitement! Wiggle This is Wiggle, one of the stars of the show at the Burlesque Christmas Ball. I love backstage portraits, there something much more revealing and intimate about them. The energy is there, the anticipation as well as the performance. I got to the Brass Monkey just over half an hour before the show. Most of the performers were ready and downstairs in the bar are two sofas with a beautiful wooden backdrop. Perfect location. No time to mess around with more than one light so quick setup of flash with brolly (little bit of tinkering to make sure the hottest spot was on them and not the wall) and these were the results. I love symmetry in pictures and the boots that Wiggle's wearing were so big they were perfect for leading the eye into the frame so i got her to stretch her arms out for some more leading lines and there you have it. Toulouse - cathedral interior A view of the choir of St.-Etienne Cathedral in Toulouse on a postcard posted in Toulouse to an address in High Wycombe on Monday the 26th. April 1909. The stains on the ceiling suggest that, a hundred or so years ago, the building was not as well looked after as it is now. So what else happened on the day that the card was posted? Well, on the 26th. April 1909, a baby boy was born who became Sir William Neil Connor, a left-wing journalist for The Daily Mirror who wrote under the pseudonym of Cassandra. He wrote a regular column for over 30 years between July 1935 and February 1967 with a short intermission for WW2, his column re-starting after the war with: "As I was saying before I was so rudely interrupted, it is a powerful hard thing to please all of the people all of the time". He took his pen-name from Cassandra in Greek mythology - she was a tragic character who was given the gift of prophesy by Apollo but was then cursed so that no-one would ever believe her. His writings, described as "polished-up barrack-room style", were either bitter attacks on people or events, or a personal diary of his everyday life and thoughts. He worked alongside cartoonist Philip Zee at the Daily Mirror, and the pair courted controversy in 1942 with an illustration, captioned by Connor, which Winston Churchill and others saw as an attack on government. His most famous columns include the claims that P.G. Wodehouse was a Nazi collaborator, and the outing of Liberace for which the paper was sued and lost. He also attacked the death sentence passed on Ruth Ellis, writing "The one thing that brings stature and dignity to mankind and raises us above the beasts will have been denied her - pity and the hope of ultimate redemption". His comments contributed to an increased antipathy to the death penalty which eventually led to its abolition in the UK. In the years leading up to his death Connor wrote more humorous columns and was regarded with affection by Mirror readers. Subjects ranged from the time he received wrong number calls intended for the local railway parcels service, to the mysterious person who sent him a fresh goose egg every year. They were clearly orphans and would never have made it had the tree crew not brought them to me. Of course, I know (or knew) nothing of baby squirrel care but thanks to some quick help from the internet I was able to keep the warm long enough and even feed them before I was able to hand them over to a professional later in the day. Unlike baby birds, where most of the time people think they are orphaned and the best course of action is actually just to place them back where you found them, if you do come across baby squirrels, keep them warm ASAP and then call Fish and Game to ask for assistance. These guys should make it just fine, and while some might argue we don't need more squirrels in the world, I couldn't just let them freeze to death Opossum babies eating poo That's no tootsie roll! Look at the opossum on the left. What is in his paw? Poo! Why? Because he's eating it! I was sitting in the animal room going "I know I just cleaned all the opossum cages" when the smell of fresh poo wafted into the air. I turned around and the boy is eating a freshie! They do this if you feed them tons of nutritious food. They smell the nutrients in the poo so they eat it. The Star of India was launched in 1863 and is the oldest ship in the world that still maintains a regular sailing schedule. She is a unique and cherished community icon that has been welcoming visitors on the San Diego waterfront for more than 75 years. Onboard are exhibits chronicling her career as an immigrant ship and commercial vessel during which she made 21 trips around the world. MORE INFORMATION ON THE STAR OF INDIA: The Star of India was built in 1863 as Euterpe, a full-rigged iron windjammer ship in Ramsey, Isle of Man. After a full career sailing from Great Britain to India then to New Zealand, she became a salmon hauler on the Alaska then to California route. After retirement, she was restored and is now a seaworthy museum ship ported in San Diego. The ship is both a California and National Historic Landmark, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. As Euterpe: Named for Euterpe, the muse of music, she was a full-rigged ship (a ship that has 3 masts and squaresails on all 3 masts) built of iron in 1863 by Gibson, McDonald & Arnold, of Ramsey, Isle of Man, British Isles, for the Indian jute trade of Wakefield Nash & Company of Liverpool. She was launched on November 14, 1863, and assigned British Registration No.47617 and signal VPJK. Euterpe's career had a rough beginning. She sailed for Calcutta from Liverpool on January 9, 1864, under the command of Captain William John Storry. A collision with an unlighted, hit-and-run Spanish brig off the coast of Wales carried away the jib-boom and damaged other rigging. The crew became mutinous, refusing to continue, and she returned to Anglesey to repair; 17 of the crew were confined to the Beaumaris Gaol at hard labor. Then, in 1865, Euterpe was forced to cut away her masts in a gale in the Bay of Bengal off Madras and limped to Trincomalee and Calcutta for repair. Captain Storry died during the return voyage to England and was buried at sea. After her near-disastrous first two voyages Euterpe was sold, first in 1871 to David Brown of London for whom she made four more relatively uneventful voyages to India, then again (displaced by steamers after the opening of the Suez Canal) in 1871 to Shaw, Savill & Company of London. In late 1871 she began twenty-five years of carrying passengers and freight in the New Zealand emigrant trade, each voyage going eastward around the world before returning to England. The fastest of her 21 passages to New Zealand took 100 days, the longest 143 days. She also made ports of call in Australia, California, and Chile. A baby was born on one of those trips en route to New Zealand, and was given the middle name Euterpe. In 1897, after 21 round-the-world trips, Euterpe was sold, first to Hawaiian owners, then in 1899 to the Pacific Colonial Ship Company of San Francisco, California and from 1898 to 1901 made four voyages between the Pacific Northwest, Australia and Hawaii carrying primarily lumber, coal and sugar. She was registered in the United States on October 30, 1900 As Star of India: In 1901, Euterpe was sold to the Alaska Packers' Association of San Francisco, who re-rigged her as a barque (converting the square-rigged aftermost mast to fore-and-aft) and in 1902 began carrying fishermen, cannery workers, coal and canning supplies each spring from Oakland, California to Nushagak in the Bering Sea, returning each fall with holds full of canned salmon. In 1906, the Association changed her name to be consistent with the rest of their fleet, and she became Star of India. She was laid up in 1923 after 22 Alaskan voyages; by that time, steam ruled the seas. In 1926, Star of India was sold to the Zoological Society of San Diego, to be the centerpiece of a planned museum and aquarium. The Great Depression and World War II caused that plan to be canceled; it wasn't until 1957 that her restoration began. Alan Villiers, a windjammer captain and author, came to San Diego on a lecture tour. Seeing Star decaying in the harbor, he publicized the situation and inspired a group of citizens to form the "Star of India Auxiliary" in 1959 to support the restoration of the ship. Progress was still slow, but in 1976, Star of India finally put to sea again. She currently houses exhibits for the Maritime Museum of San Diego, is kept fully seaworthy, and sails at least once a year. With the many other ships now in the Museum, she hosts frequent docent-led school tours (over 6,000 children a year) and also a Living History Program in which students "step back in time" and are immersed in history and teamwork activities during overnight visits. The 1863 Star of India is the third oldest ship afloat in the United States, after the 1797 USS Constitution and 1854 USS Constellation, and is the oldest ship in the entire world that still sails regularly.
