    camera
  • A chamber or round building

  • A camera is a device that records/stores images. These images may be still photographs or moving images such as videos or movies. The term camera comes from the camera obscura (Latin for "dark chamber"), an early mechanism for projecting images. The modern camera evolved from the camera obscura.

  • television camera: television equipment consisting of a lens system that focuses an image on a photosensitive mosaic that is scanned by an electron beam

  • equipment for taking photographs (usually consisting of a lightproof box with a lens at one end and light-sensitive film at the other)

    opencv
  • OpenCV is a computer vision library originally developed by Intel. It is free for use under the open source BSD license. The library is cross-platform. It focuses mainly on real-time image processing.

  • OpenCVS is a BSD-licensed implementation of the popular Unix version control software called Concurrent Versions System. OpenCVS is developed as a part of the OpenBSD project by Jean-Francois Brousseau, Joris Vink, Xavier Santolaria, Niall O'Higgins and others.

Learning OpenCV: Computer Vision with the OpenCV Library

Learning OpenCV: Computer Vision with the OpenCV Library

"This library is useful for practitioners, and is an excellent tool for those entering the field: it is a set of computer vision algorithms that work as advertised."
-William T. Freeman, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Learning OpenCV puts you in the middle of the rapidly expanding field of computer vision. Written by the creators of the free open source OpenCV library, this book introduces you to computer vision and demonstrates how you can quickly build applications that enable computers to "see" and make decisions based on that data.

Computer vision is everywhere-in security systems, manufacturing inspection systems, medical image analysis, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, and more. It stitches Google maps and Google Earth together, checks the pixels on LCD screens, and makes sure the stitches in your shirt are sewn properly. OpenCV provides an easy-to-use computer vision framework and a comprehensive library with more than 500 functions that can run vision code in real time.

Learning OpenCV will teach any developer or hobbyist to use the framework quickly with the help of hands-on exercises in each chapter. This book includes:
A thorough introduction to OpenCV
Getting input from cameras
Transforming images
Segmenting images and shape matching
Pattern recognition, including face detection
Tracking and motion in 2 and 3 dimensions
3D reconstruction from stereo vision
Machine learning algorithms
Getting machines to see is a challenging but entertaining goal. Whether you want to build simple or sophisticated vision applications, Learning OpenCV is the book you need to get started.

Twilight - Moonrise Seattle

Twilight - Moonrise Seattle

HD video of that magic time, the border between night and day, and the rising of the moon, some of my best sequences of the year from Seattle and the Northwest. This time lapse video is crafted from thousands of individual still photographs (rather than a video camera) and then compiled together in sequence. By using DSLR individual frames, you can get much higher resolution and quality and also add pans and other camera motion and zooms in post-production...

I had it on a shoot in Japan and I could hardly get down the street without being questioned about it. I brought it to a camera show a couple of years ago and all the dealers wanted to buy it. It's a pretty cool camera! I just received conformation from Morgan Sparks of CameraLeather.com, this is the only one like it in the world!

I took the photo I loaded right before this one, which was taken in San Diego's Balboa Park, and made it wallpaper for my laptop.

Original image shot with my Nikon D70 in RAW, then processed with Adobe Photoshop CS3's Camera Raw. I think I made the image sepia with Photoshop's Duotone feature. The background is a texture with the layer set to "Multiply."

Font is a free one I downloaded called "The King and Queen," layer styles added: Drop Shadow. "Belle Fleur" is an homage to the Sookie Stackhouse books, which I am currently reading and loving.

Camera RAW --> CS5.

Tweaked Curves in RAW, then imported to CS5 and did some work in Silver Efex Pro 2.0. I put a Agfa APX 400 film filter on it and a very tiny black frame/vignette.

I spent about 2 or 3 hours working on a version of this and it came out like crap so I just went back and started over and just did some minor tweaks. I couldn't get it EXACTLY how I wanted, but I'm happy with how it turned out.

The Adobe Photoshop CS3 Book for Digital Photographers

This is the eBook version of the printed book.
Scott Kelby was honored with Professional Photographer magazine’s highly coveted 2008 Hot One Award for The Adobe Photoshop CS3 Book for Digital Photographers. Here’s what Jeff Kent, the Hot One Editor at Professional Photographer, has to say about the book: “In a how-to published by Peachpit Press, Scott Kelby, best-selling author on Adobe Photoshop, delves into CS3 to uncover the most important and useful techniques for digital photographers. Our judges liked Kelby’s direct approach with step-by-step instructions. In this new edition, Kelby shares even more secrets from the top pros.”

Shutterbug magazine chose The Adobe Photoshop CS3 Book for Digital Photographers as a Top Digital Book of 2007. Here’s what Joe Farace of Shutterbug has to say about the book: “Scott Kelby’s name on a Photoshop book is like the Dodge brand on the front of a pickup truck. You know it’s built RAM—or pixel—tough. Combining his famous twisted wit with unwaveringly straight tutorials, Kelby takes you through a detailed tour of Photoshop CS3 by showing how to use the new features. No fluff; just page after page of well-illustrated tutorials showing photographers how to get the most out of the new features, commands, and effects found in the latest version of Adobe’s flagship. It will get you up to speed on CS3’s new features faster than you can all by yourself.”

Scott Kelby, the #1 best-selling Photoshop author in the world today, once again takes this book to a whole new level as he uncovers the latest, most important, and most exciting new Adobe Photoshop CS3 techniques for digital photographers. This major update to his award-winning, record-breaking book does something for digital photographers that’s never been done before–it cuts through the bull and shows you exactly “how to do it.” It’s not a bunch of theory; it doesn’t challenge you to come up with your own settings or figure it out on your own. Instead, Scott shows you step-by-step the exact techniques used by today’s cutting-edge digital photographers, and best of all, he shows you flat-out exactly which settings to use, when to use them, and why.

That’s why the previous editions of this book are widely used as the official course study guide in photography courses at college and universities around the world, and this new edition for Photoshop CS3 exposes even more of the top pros’ most closely-guarded secrets.

Learn How The Pros Do It
Each year Scott trains thousands of professional photographers on how to use Photoshop, and almost without exception they have the same questions, the same problems, and the same challenges–and that’s exactly what he covers in this book. You’ll learn:

• The sharpening techniques the pros really use.
• The pros’ tricks for fixing the most common digital photo problems fast!
• How to get great looking prints (that actually match your screen!)
• A whole chapter on the latest, most requested Photoshop special effects!
• How to color correct any photo without breaking a sweat.
• How to process Raw images, plus how to take advantage of all the new Camera Raw features in CS3!
• The portrait retouching secrets only the pros know about!
• How to add real automation to your work.
• How to show your work like a pro!

Plus a host of shortcuts, workarounds, and slick “insider” tricks to send your productivity through the roof! If you’re a digital photographer, and you’re ready to learn the “tricks of the trade”–the same ones that today’s leading pros use to correct, edit, sharpen, retouch, and present their work–then you’re holding the book that ...

Canon Lens Test01 18-55mm At 28mm With 28mm Prime and Tamron 18-200mm Table Comparisons Crop04

Crop 4 looks at the lower left corner, and yields results similar to Crop 2. Lateral chromatic aberration appears strongest with the 28mm f/1.8 prime, though it is tougher to tell. And again, the LCA qualities observed may be specific these particular lenses. A different copy of the same lens may yield different results. Best image sharpness is again around f/5.6 to f/11. Even the 28mm f/1.8 prime seems to suffer a little softness at f/4 at the corner, as it did in the upper right.

charging camera batteries in europe

    camera batteries
  • Batteries designed to power the various functions of cameras. Lithium batteries are popular for this use thanks to their small size and long life. Common 3V types include CR2 and CR123A, while 6V types include CRP2 and 2CR5. Flash units normally use AA-size batteries.

    in europe
  • In the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Hungary, Ukraine, Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium, The Netherlands and Romania, "Delikatessen" (as it is spelled in current German) has a rather different meaning; it designates top-quality (and top-price) foodstuffs.

Blocks of Concrete

This is where we come from... and this is where we go.
This shot spurs random thoughts, so I'll just lign them up one by one.

First, it reminds me of "Always look on the bright side of life", from Monty Python. I've even wanted to use that as a title.

Then it reminds me of a similar shot, taken at sunset from approximately the same place, by Troniu. He started the idea of "this is where we come from -- and this is where we go", so I'm not original.

However, I just wanted a night shot, from a high viewpoint. Driving around in my car, I've stopped upon this hill. The cemetery just happened to be there right under, it wasn't my original intention to take morbid shots. Still, it's in the shot now.

One of my grandmothers lies here in this cemetery, and I don't even know where she is. People should know where their grandmother is. Not knowing makes me feel like a bad person.

Other than that, I have decided to take a least one photo per day, of no matter what. Whatever happens in my life on that day. Or just a walkabout -- it's good to get some air. Maybe some dull in-house macros, if the weather permits nothing else. I wonder if I'll be able to keep this thing going for 365 days... starting today. I won't promise, but I could at least try.

With this decision in mind, I drove up the hill, walked about, found a decent spot, got back to the car and took it closer. Then I went out, mounted the tripod and the camera, found the right spot in all the mud. When I've finally turned on the camera, I have been greeted with a nice and familiar welcoming message: "Replace the batteries."

It's true... I haven't used them in a while, though they should have been charged. I have two sets of batteries, and older and the newer one. Looks like the older set is finally giving in, after more than 27 months since I've bought'em. Another set bought at the same time gave in last summer already, so I was expecting this. Will give them another try with the charger, and if they won't work anymore, it's recycle time, and a new set will take their place.

Unmounted the camera and the tripod, walked back to the car through the mud, and changed the batteries at the trunk lights. Rinse, repeat... walk back, set things up again. This time with more luck, apparently. We're having a few warm days, by the way... 8 to 10 degrees celsius, a welcome change after a period of -8 to -16 for a few weeks. So I was there, the air was fresh, and it really wasn't cold at all, time to take today's shot then.

I was totally annoyed today, as my brand new HTC Windows Mobile smartphone went bad the other day. Got it as a Christmas gift, so it's not even 30 days old. :((
I'm having problems with Vodafone as they apparently don't want to fully replace it, they want to send it to their repair shop instead. But I do want a brand new phone, and it's my very right to get one, whatever their crappy corporate policies are, I don't care.

Talked to someone today, he said he's at his fourth (!!!) HTC Diamond now, has changed three, but this one now works perfectly. Great and encouraging, for sure. But my Touch Pro should be better than the Diamond. Well, it was supposed to be...

One of my flickr friends, Londonconstant, has got a group called Brutalist Communist Architecture. I could take many shots like this one, and post them there, so people would see. This is how life used to look like, over here. And this is how it still does today, to a certain extent. Even now with the political background changed, we can't erase all this in just a few decades. It's going to take a lot more than that, I'm afraid. Same for the period's marks on people minds (well, sometimes bodies as well) and most importantly, on their souls.

I've sit out there alone for quite some time, the evening air was nice and I was in no hurry. Then a man came, with his dog, walking by, and greeted me, which is rare in (urban) Romania. Then I've realised he was talking to me in English. I've invited him up the small hill I was standing on, and had a little chatter. The man was Swedish. Sorry that I can't remember his name now, I'm so bad with names, forgot it the second after he said it -- but he repeated (and probably remebers) mine.

He was a language teacher, travelled around the world, knows seven languages, and teaches wherever he goes. He's got two children, and bought a small camera to take shots of the kids. But the kids are totally annoyed already by having their pictures taken all the time. And he's got a Romanian lady friend of whom he took some good shots, he says. Even got his portrait of the lady printed out and framed at his place, not too far from where we have met. Today the lady's jealous on her own portrait, complaining that she'll never look that good again, like in that picture, framed. That's capturing places and time, that will never be the same again, the very essence of photograhy -- I replied, and he knew what I ment.

He was quite interested in

Tagged twice!

Tagged twice!

I was tagged twice...by gypsyfroggie and Lisa (lat454205/Lisa), so I thought I'd better play the game. I can't for the life of me figure out how people take photos of themselves in the mirror. I tried 28 times and most were out of focus or just showed the top of my head and ceiling. You can see my white knuckles here...one of the last shots I took!
1. Most of the clothes I own came from thrift stores, including shoes, coats, gloves, scarves, hats and bags. The only thing I draw the line at is underwear!
2. My wonderful children have made me the person I am today. They are wise, witty, clever, compassionate and loving adults who make my world go round.
3. I'm handy with tools and have a love affair with my cordless drill...it makes holes in walls, shells, wood, flower pots and galvanized tins and makes me feel like a regular Rosie the Riveter.
4. I'm blessed with crazy, incredible neighbours on both sides and beyond...the kind who hug on a daily basis and sign cards and notes with "love".
5. I wish I still owned my first car, a British Austin A40 with soft red leather seats, that I got when I was 17 for $60 worth of babysitting money.
6. I've travelled around Europe twice. My high school friend and I backpacked for 9 weeks the summer after we'd taught our first year of school, sleeping on trains, staying in youth hostels and using "Europe on $5 a Day" as our guide...Copenhagen to visit her relatives, Liverpool to visit mine, Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona, the running of the bulls in Pamplona, Rome and more. Before children came along, my husband and I journeyed for six months in a Morris van, camping, buying food in markets, bathing in cold lochs and following whatever road beckoned. I loved Yugoslavia, Italy (especially Pompeii), southern France, Spain and Portugal, but the Isle of Skye was a dream.
7. I value each and every one of my friends, going back to when I was six and played with Willa...oh, the adventures we had would fill a book! We got together a couple of summers ago and she hasn't changed a bit.
8. My sister likes to tell people we're twins, only I'm the older one, by 14 years! We are on the same wave length, complete each other's sentences and laugh until our stomachs ache.
9. I have a thing for crows and ravens and I like to think that they're the only "witch" thing about me, although one of my students once told me that I was a witch and in fact, that I had witch's hair. I said, "If you think this is bad, you should see it when I get out of bed in the morning." His whole attitude changed after that and in fact, even after he moved on to the next grade, he'd run down to my classroom and yell, "Hey, Mrs. P., I've come for my daily hug." Humour will win out every time!
10. My years teaching Special Education were great...challenging yes, but I learned more from those kids than I think they did from me. The most rewarding part is that several are still in touch with me after ten years...all doing well, some in college and university and still asking me questions and for advice!
11. Because of flickr, I've met some absolutely wonderful people around the world, people who I can call friends, people to share life's experiences with and who invite me into their homes by way of photographs.
12. My two dogs, Casper and Indy, go everywhere with me and I can't think of better shadows. The cat prefers to stay at home.
13. My grandson is the apple of my eye. I think he's just about the most intelligent, funny and energizing force on the planet. He charges my batteries with his wit, his drawings, his interesting discussions and his keen sense of the world around him.
14. I've been a vegetarian for more years than I can think of, but I don't push it or preach it. It's just works for me.
15. I've inherited my dad's love of rocks, stones, fossils, birds, mushrooms, trees, sea life, forest life and of course, gardening...hands in the dirt, nurturing plants and harvesting the crop, however small.
16. My mom taught ballet for years and my sister went to The National Ballet School in Toronto before moving west to take over a dance school here on the coast. I did not inherit rhythm from my mom and I dance like a cardboard cut-out! I can't carry a tune to save me (one friend once said that if I ever formed a group I'd have to call it Barb and the Monotones), but I used to sing my heart out with the kids in my classes and we usually ended the day with a rollicking Rockin Robin...tweet, tweet!

Macrophotography Setup

Macrophotography Setup

***1/5/11 - Note: The setup as seen here was only really used once or twice. Although it offers quite a bit of mangification, it isn't realistically usable in the field due to it's weight - therefore this image is not representative of my usual setup.***

I've been getting a few e-mails recently about what equipment I am using to take my macrophotographs. So here's a picture of my setup.

The camera body is a Pentax *ist DL DSLR body.

The flash is an old Vivitar "Zoom Thyristor 3500" connected to the body by a cheap off-brand off camera flash cord. The flash is mounted on a bizarre old "PETRI" flash bracket with a ball head mount. The flash is diffused by a diffuser I made out of a Goldfish box, duct tape, paper towel, and clear plastic.

The body in this photo is mounted to a camera bellows, and a vintage Pentax Takumar bayonet mount 28mm f/2.8 prime lens is reversed on an old off-brand 2x teleconverter is mounted to the bellows. (The setup as shown is what I would use if I was planning on taking a picture of just the eyes of a jumping spider.)

The majority of the time I just use the 28mm mounted to the teleconverter with no bellows.

Occasionally, I will use an old SMC Pentax f/1.7 50mm prime reversed on the bellows or a 3x teleconverter in there somewhere.

Canon S2 IS repair project...part one!

Canon S2 IS repair project...part one!

Ok, as some of you know my old Canon S2 IS took a dump on me and stopped working when the gears that power the lens crashed resulting in that ever dreaded Canon E/18 error.

As a result of this I purchased the new Canon S3 IS, the next model up! Even though I thoroughly love the S3 I'm starting to have second thoughts about future Canon purchases due to the cheap ass plastic that fills the inside of both these cameras.

Now I know I'm harder than anyone I know on things like this but, for the amount of money these things cost, not to mention the amount of money Canon makes in profit each year, well, I think they owe it to their loyal customers to incorporate only the best materials inside their cameras.

As some of you know I'm on the edge of my seat right now trying to decide if I should upgrade to the new Canon EOS 30D or the Nikon D80 or D200. If Canon uses the same cheap plastic in its dSLR cameras I'm sure to get the Nikon.

Anyway...read the next two parts of this series to discover what caused the gears to lock up!

On a side note: I'm trying to find a way to seal my own seams on my S3. I've got a few ideas...you have any!

The Viper Tomb: an adventure...sort of

The Viper Tomb: an adventure...sort of

As I the weather is still awful I'll continue blogging. This is an entry from a journal I kept on the archaeological dig I mentioned with reference to the last pic.

Friday, July 28 [2000}
Today was one of the more fascinating days. We went through the usual routine in the morning, although this time without Gavin, who was sorely missed. It was funny on the hill. Erin Roberts, our square supervisor [dig square] slept it out. Greg (with the cowboy hat) was also absent, because he had a violent allergic reaction and had to be carted off to hospital by Termite, who also did not make it. Another square supervisor who did not get there was Sara who shares a room with Erin and slept it out for the same reasons. Then Jack Olive, the dig director, slept it out or something. We - Bryan, Molly, Kate, Sam Edwards and myself had to prepare the Square 26 for a photograph. We did so rather badly and Marion Goldstein, the dig photographer, had to climb into the square and dust it herself.

Second breakfast arrived at half-eight a.m. and all of the square supervisors (except Greg) showed up. Erin and Sara read poems of apology but made sure to blame the Michigan Expedition partiers who made noise nonstop last night. They were celebrating the finish of their work. Killian MacAleese [an Irish classmate, he had actually been responsible for ALL the noise] left the kibbutz this morning, sometime, since he was finished.
Anyhow, it turned out Bobbi had a lucky escape although she was badly bruised. Doug Oakman accidentally knocked over a heavy stone that fell into the pit in which Bobbi was dusting. The stone grazed her back, but did quite a lot of damage. She went home early with the breakfast van.
Canadian Brian (as distinguished from Shirtless Bryan) is leaving on the weekend. He works down in Square 13 with Doug Oakman. However, since today was his last day on the dig he wanted to get some photographs with his fancy Pentax camera which he bought just for the trip. Since he knew I had visited the tombs on Cana he asked me to be his guide so that he could get some photographs. Needless to say I jumped at the chance not to do work for a while.

So we headed down the hill to the tombs. Brian was not mad on the idea of large insects, in particular the giant cave crickets, so I said I would go in ahead and clear any nasty invertebrates out of the way. The first cave was fine, there were no hostile invertebrates. Some webs, but little signs of life.
It was a tomb complex that was never constructed [completed]. Only one tomb had been carved inside, and it had not been properly completed. Brian came in and got the pictures he wanted. He really enjoyed himself.

Next we went to the cave that was just south of the largest one that had the tree. This was more interesting than the first, I remembered. In the pit was the rubbish of generations, including newspapers and plastic bags. However, I could see in the entrance of the tomb complex the spiny bush which I had sat on the first time I had come to the tombs. An uncomfortable memory, to say the least.

Anyhow, my plan was to cautiously enter and move around the spiny plants, and then slowly dislodge any invertebrates.

I slowly climbed in the doorway and slid along the wall in the wake of a large grey gecko. Once inside I lit my flashlight and scanned around the cave. I prepared to move the thorn bush, which was more-or-less a dusty dead plant.

As I moved the light I caught sight of what appeared to be some kind of fancy textile. Then I thought it was a fancy leather belt, then I saw coils and thought it was a fancy hat or turban. Then it began to move.

Suddenly the white zig-zags against the brown took on a new meaning, The viper's head rose. I realised it was a Blunt-nosed Viper [it was actually a Palestine Viper - Vipera palestinae]. I knew its venom would probably not kill me [wrong] but being sick was not what I wanted. I realised that if I made any attempt to get out I would probably be bitten. If it had not been for the thorns I would probably have stepped on the creature.

My instantaneous reaction was to bellow and swear at Brian not to enter. I was now trapped and had to think for a few moments. I figured that the snake was probably more scared, so I began to kick dust at it. What I thought was a small reptile unravelled to two metres in length and wound its way rapidly into the first tomb of the complex.

As for me - I bolted out the doorway a whiter shade of pale. Brian and I could only laugh. He had hurt his knee because it turned out that he was on his way in when I began to yell at him. In the rush to get clear he smashed his knee off the stonework.

We then went to the cave with the big tree. I was extra, extra cautious. There were giant crickets all over this one but neither of us cared. If there is anyhing to be learned from this it is
Giant crickets = safe tomb/cave
Geckoes = not good indicators.

The tomb complex with the tree is pretty cool. Possibly t

Pentax K1000

Pentax K1000

The year was 1979. Jimmy Carter was president. Steve Martin’s ‘The Jerk’ was playing in the theaters and I was in the tobacco fields. This I believe was a tribute to a family history where the younglings went to work in the fields as cheap labor. Each summer I would leave the luxury of going to the beach everyday in Wilmington for the fields of eastern North Carolina. The days would start early and end late. It was hot and miserable. The noise of the tractor combined with the machinery and the leaves flapping against your face were enough to put you in your own world of hell. The only thing that got me through these weeks of horror was the dream of what I would spend my $1.25/hour wage on. Yes, most was saved for school clothes, but the rest was mine to spend. This fine summer, the debate was between diving gear I had seen in the Sears and Robuck catalog each night before bed and this Pentax K1000 SLR camera. I think I made a good choice. There is no way in hell my parents would have allowed me to go diving in the sounds around Wrightsville beach as a 10 year old, but they let me take pictures. I soon parted ways with my old 110 style camera (wish I still had it) and learned how to use a manual camera. This is one of the early model K1000’s and is built like a tank. Every few years, I shoot a roll on it. It is and will always be an amazing camera. If I could put a digital back on it, I would be in the heaven that delivered me from the hell of the tobacco fields once again.

Lentar Tele-Photo & Wide Angle Lens

I recently bought a used 360 and much to my pleasant surprise, this was with the camera. It comes with the tele-photo and wide-angle lens as well as a seperate viewfinder. They can (supposedly) attach to any fixed lens folding pack film camera. The tele-photo lens will increase the focal length by 1.4X. The wide-angle will decrease the focal length by 0.8X. It recommends that f-stops of 4, 5.6 or 8 be used...which means that this is really only an ideal accessory for those lucky bastards with 180s, 190s or 195s.

The Filmmaker's Eye: Learning (and Breaking) the Rules of Cinematic Composition

This is the only book that combines conceptual and practical instruction on creating polished and eloquent images for film and video with the technical know-how to achieve them.
Loaded with hundreds of full-color examples, The Filmmaker's Eye is a focused, easy-to-reference guide that shows you how to become a strong visual storyteller through smart, effective choices for your shots.
After a short introduction to basic principles, a variety of shots are deconstructed in the following format:
Why It Works: an introduction to a particular type of shot
How It Works: callouts point out exactly how the shot works the way it does--the visual rules and technical aspects in action
Technical Considerations: the equipment and techniques needed to get the shot.
Breaking the Rules: examples where the "rules" are brilliant subverted
This book:
Helps you make smart visual choices with this quick, focused, and visual guide to cinematic composition.
Shows you how to master the rules, then break them.
Includes examples and discussions from a range of international films.

Amazon Exclusive: A Letter from Gustavo Mercado on The Filmmaker’s Eye: Learning (and Breaking) the Rules of Cinematic Composition

Dear Amazon Readers,
Although there are other books out there that deal with the principles of visual composition, I always wanted to have a guide that specialized in the specific requirements that are inherent to the composition of shots intended for telling stories with moving images, also known as cinematic composition. The reason for the differentiation is simple: the composition of shots for movies has developed its own set of conventions, sometimes appropriating concepts from other art forms (like painting or still photography), but also creating its own aesthetic principles and visual language because of its unique characteristics (the fixed size of the frame, the movement of the subject and/or camera, the technology used to capture images, the way images are shown in conjunction with other images, etc.).
As you can probably guess, I never found such a guide, so I decided to write The Filmmaker’s Eye: Learning (and Breaking) the Rules of Cinematic Composition to fill the gap in this critical area of filmmaking. This book combines, for the first time, a specialized, focused guide to the most common and basic shots of the film vocabulary, from the extreme close up to the extreme long shot (also including chapters on the over the shoulder, macro, establishing, and moving camera shots). The Filmmaker’s Eye examines the main aspects that make these shots work: the rules of cinematic composition used in their creation, the techniques and equipment necessary to implement them, and their most common narrative function as shown in examples from mainstream, independent, and world cinema. This approach allows you to understand not only why a particular shot type is usually composed in a certain way, but also how it is used to convey meaning and how to shoot it whether you are working on film or HD video.
It is my sincerest wish that this book will help deepen your understanding of cinematic composition, whether you are on a film shoot setting up your next shot, or just enjoying one of your favorite movies. Have fun!
--Gustavo Mercado

Amazon Exclusive: Top Ten Tips from Gustavo Mercado to Improve Your Cinematic Compositions

Use a director’s viewfinder, a still camera, or any other instrument that allows you to create a frame to see the world around you. Good compositions work not only because of what is included in the frame, but also because of what is left out of it. Using any device (even your hands) to create a frame will allow you to train your eye and better understand the visual relationships of the elements contained within it.
Know what your lenses can and cannot do. The lens you choose can radically alter the visual relationships between elements in your frame; understanding how different lenses affect space, the look of your subjects, and the amount of light you can work with is fundamental if you want to have complete control over your images.
Use depth of field as a creative element of your composition. Choosing what is in and out of focus is one of the most powerful ways to control the information contained in your frame, and therefore shape what an audience gets out of your compositions.
Have a clear understanding behind the narrative function of your composition. A good storyteller knows how to emphasize certain moments in a story and details in a frame. It is imperative that you understand the dramatic purpose behind the moment you are capturing so that you can arrange the visual elements within the frame accordingly. Ask yourself: what do I want the audience to get out of this particular shot and how can I make it express that?
Know the basic rules of composition and why they work. While this might seem obvious at first, the key here is not only to be familiar with the rules, but also to understand how and why they function, in essence, why did they become rules in the first place? Only when you know the concept behind the rule can you apply it in an expressive way.
Learn how to break the rules. Every rule was created by individuals not following the rules; somebody decided to place a camera really close to a subject one day and gave birth to the close up. Of course, breaking the rules intelligently only works after you learn them (see previous tip)!
Be familiar with the limitations and advantages of all your equipment. Creating visually compelling compositions requires not only your artistic insight, but also your technical skills. You may have an amazing composition in your mind’s eye that gets completely undone by the time you shoot it because you were unaware your camera could not run at a particular frame rate, or you did not have enough lights to get the look you wanted.
Keep in mind how each individual composition will function when juxtaposed with the rest of the images in your film, and be aware of how their interaction adds meaning as a whole. Whether you intend to or not, your story will have an image system at work, so you should have a plan for how every composition you create fits within this framework.
Make it a habit to scan the entire frame before you roll camera. Even experienced directors of photography fall into the trap of getting so caught up by a single aspect of a composition that they forget to look at every visual element in the frame, often ruining what would have been beautiful shots.
Do your research. I find it extremely helpful to create a portfolio of images in preparation for a project. It can include pictures taken from magazines, examples from still photography books, paintings, other films, and any other image that you feel captures the tone, mood, and visual palette you want to implement for your film.

Yuletide for the glum

Yuletide for the glum

"Awww ...there's another dead fox", opined Mrs Bentos, looking sidelong out of the car window. "No, it's the same one", I replied, trying to keep the brittleness out of my voice, for we had passed poor Reynard about an hour before on our first attempt to leave the M11 and find London. Neither Mrs Bentos nor I are strict celebrants of Christmas. For black-hearted misanthropes such as ourselves one of the few advantages of the festive season is that "les autres" are mostly indoors, leaving the streets empty and places of resort pleasantly deserted. When we lived in Bristol our festive ritual was to drive over the Severn Bridge into Wales. This year we had to cast about for a new venue.
I had thought it might be a good wheeze to drive into central London, hoping for a kind of "Day the Earth Caught Fire" effect. The drive into London from the Bristol direction used to be a simple matter. Windsor Castle and Heathrow on your right, elevated section of the M4, Chiswick Flyover, park at the King's Mall shopping centre in Hammersmith and take the underground. But northeast London is, to me, terra incognita. After coming off the M11 onto the North Circular Road we plunged into the labyrinthine web of suburban streets, all decked out with fairy lights and Walt Disneyish plastic reindeer. Getting lost would be part of the fun we had told ourselves. All we had to do was keep going in a more or less southerly direction and we'd eventually come out somewhere we recognised. But after a few twists and turns which way was south and which north? An hour later we found ourselves joining the M25 at Waltham Abbey.
The second approach was more successful and we came into the City along unfamiliar Commercial Road ...Canary Wharf on the left and the London Suppository up ahead. The streets were not quite deserted. At Bank a huddle of Japanese tourists took photographs of the Royal Exchange. Probably Shintoists, I ruminated, gawping at them from the car as we waited at traffic lights ...Christmas as much a mystery to them as kami to us. We eventually parked, free, at the kerb, among many empty spaces, in Royal Hospital Road, and got out to stretch our legs. Around the corner on the Chelsea Embankment, the shades of Rossetti, Whistler, Thomas Carlyle, Hall Caine, Swinburne and Theodore Watts-Dunton seemed to muster among the melancholy dripping branches. At 1.30 in the afternoon it was almost too dark to take photographs and the little camera-shake warning light ...a red hand, wobbling as though of some palsy... appeared in the viewfinder. Mrs B. managed to snap this informal study however.

Baldwin Street on a wet Monday morning

Baldwin Street on a wet Monday morning

Here we are in Baldwin Street, Bristol, waiting for the lights to change so we can get onto the Centre, on a dismal Monday morning. Yes, I know, it might have made for a more interesting picture if there'd been some traffic coming the other way but in this sort of situation you have to snatch whatever image you can. Ahead is the much reviled Millenium Promenade, with its wonderful sails and masts structure and the Hippodrome theatre and the shops of St Augustine's parade beyond. On the left, a cyclist has just wheeled his bike past the London Camera Exchange. If I remember right, that was more or less the spot where 'Eddie Shoestring' (Trevor Eve) was filmed in one of the opening shots in the 'Shoestring' tv detective series way back in the seventies, when the Hippodrome used to have its dot-matrix newscaster working at about roof level.
Taken with my 'point-and-hope' camera-phone mobile.

Heirloom Leica

Heirloom Leica

The best time to sell heirlooms is when you're still alive. I used to be of the keep-it-forever school, but after working on enough estate organizing jobs I have seen the light. The owner is the one who has the most information to sell an item and will care enough to take the time to do it right. And what use is this going to be for the coming apocalypse anyway? Hee. This kit belonged to my father and he gave it to me when I took up photography in college. It was pretty nifty to use what was already considered an antique, but the shutter speeds were too slow for accurate color slide work so I bought a Nikon FE which I may also sell soon. I thought I would keep it as a museum piece, but it was really just a dust collector sitting on my bookshelf. Plus if the economy really goes south whose going to buy it? Turns out most of the bidders were from overseas anyway possibly due to the week dollar. It sold, to a South Korean, for double what I expected at $816. He probably fixes them up and sells them for double that. He was the most sweetest most polite person I have ever had the pleasure to do business with.

World Photography Day - 100 Year Old Camera - Tiviot Mill

For World Photography Day I thought I'd take some photos with a 100 year old Kodak No. 3 folding camera I have just been given.

It takes the unobtainable 118 film but I managed to put together a method for using ilford Fp4+ 120, giving approx 6x11 cm negatives, a 225 Megapixel camera when scanned at 4800!

The camera was in good condition with just a couple of problems but I had no idea of the single shutter speed.

Anyway, slightly to my surprise it worked, leaving me to figure out how to get a film onto a dev reel for the first time in 10 years! The chemicals were a bit hit and miss, with no timer or measuring device but it was approx 1+9 Ilfosol 3 for 7 minutes followed by a wash then 1+5 Fix for 6 minutes at whatever room temperature was.

Pinhole Camera Can

pinhole camera can

    pinhole camera
  • A camera with a pinhole aperture and no lens

  • The most basic form of a camera in which no lens is used. A pinhole camera is made by making a lightight container and poking a pinhole in the front of the camera where a lens would go.

  • A camera whose lens is covered except for a pin-sized hole. You have a very small aperture, so you have to shoot long exposures.

  • A pinhole camera is a simple camera without a lens and with a single small aperture -- effectively a light-proof box with a small hole in one side. Light from a scene passes through this single point and projects an inverted image on the opposite side of the box.

Pinhole Camera Negative and Positive

Pinhole Camera Negative and Positive

Cleaning out my basement and came across a box from a workshop I did about 25 years ago. The workshop was making and using a Pinhole Camera. The Pinhole Camera was a empty coffee can that was painted black inside. The paper (5"x7") that would become the negative was loaded into the camera in a darkroom.

Here is one example of a negative and positive from that workshop.

The negative was formed on a sheet of photography paper. After it was developed (darkroom skills) the positive was created by contact with the negative.

Samsung ST50

Samsung ST50

The Samsung ST50 is a slimline digital camera that should fit into a pocket without much of a problem. The camera comes with a few fun features. These include smile detection where the ST50 fires off a shot if it detects someone is smiling. There is also a special beauty mode. This can be applied when a picture is being taken or afterwards. It helps to brighten skin tones and to give skin a smoother appearance. With face detection processing the ST50 is able to focus on up to nine faces in any one shot. There is also a blink detection setting. This alerts you to the fact that someone has blinked.

Like other Samsung digital cameras the ST50 can be charged from a wall socket or from a USB socket on a computer. Samsung supplies a cable, but there is no need for a separate charger unit.

Another useful innovation Samsung have started to include on their cameras is a recycle bin. This means if you accidentally delete a picture it can be retrieved from the bin.

Winter Walk up to the Old Mill - HDR

Winter Walk up to the Old Mill - HDR

Out geocaching again, and this time our hunt took us to the "Old Mill" in Toronto. The building you see is not the original mill, the ruins of which are in front of, and under this building, which is now a posh inn.

I spied this location on the way out to the cache and I was quite eager to get back here. I'm standing under a bridge with Old Mill Road above me. Those are my footprints in the foreground, as the bridge had an iron gate blocking people from walking under it. I suspect this was the old sluice way for the Mill back in it's heyday. Now it's a garden, but not too many flowers this time of year.

The fresh snow really made me want to get this picture though.

This one took some effort to bring to you:

1) It's an HDR photo, combination of 7 exposures. I should have used 12 exposures to get more rock detail.

2) The levels had to be adjusted in photoshop, as Photomatix really wanted to make the rocks white.

3) I adjusted the colour cast to be a bit cooler than the incadescent setting was rendering

4) The curves were adjusted, and the adjustment layer knocked down to 25% opacity

5) I actually cranked the brightness to zero and put a layer mask to ensure that the dark portions of the rocks were all that were affected, then knocked that adjustment layer down to 25% opacity so it would blend properly.

One of these days I'll run my source images through Noise Ninja before the HDR Combine/Tone Mapping step. As usual, I'm having way too much fun with the camera

Hi everyone! So, a funny thing happened yesterday evening..."P", one of my dates from the past called me up and said that he had been stood up and had two tickets to see a modern dance performance at the Sony Centre here in Toronto. He asked if I wanted to join him. He said it's okay if I come in "drab". I thought about it and said yes. After I got off the phone with him, I thought, "maybe I have enough time to get dressed" for P. So, lickety-split, I got dressed in record time and out the door I went! P was a little surprised when he saw me dressed!

The performance was very cool. It was called "eonnagata" by Robert LePage and it was the story of the Chevalier D'Eon, a French diplomat and spy who lived half of his life as a man, and half as a woman (based on a true story).

I brought my camera with me to the show so that I could take pictures (as you all know I'm a picture whore), only to realize that the battery had run out in my camera! Curses!

I had to settle on taking some pictures when I got home. A wonderful evening nonetheless.

easyHDR-TM-LCoff

...so just out of curiosity I actually got easyHDR running in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with Wine and tried it out on some of my high-contrast shots.

I'm still thinking that it's better to run Windows as the base OS and then use Ubuntu on top of that (for freeware). Simply because I've yet to get my USB devices to work in a virtual Windows OS...aside from the fact that it only uses one CPU the way that it's set up now. Though the sound and networking work fine. For maximum driver-compatibility Windows should be the base OS. There are also some other performance issues with Ubuntu but that's a secondary concern for me at the moment. Of course...I don't have to run Win7 or XP as my base OS and then dick around with *them*. Ubuntu upgrades fairly transparently....I just upgraded from 9 & so far all I've had to do is reinstall Vbox (they had a new version anyway) (note: "reinstalling" covers a large range of ground from an IT perspective), and I've yet to get accelerated 2D drivers for my ATI card on this yet. I haven't seriously tried though. But it wasn't just a simple matter of going into the software repository and selecting the ATI drivers, and I've lost the ability to run movies at high FPS at 2MP fs. More work to do there.

So ANYWAY back to the question at hand. How do I get "wet" shots out of my cameras...so I have wanted to give easyHDR a try for a while now, I finally got it up and running in Wine and opened up one G9 raw file. It uses dcraw for the transformation with a limited set of options, but the output looks ok. So this is what you get...it's fairly-intuitive, I picked it up in about 30 minutes. The key features here are the "tone-mapping" (for one image)...I first thought I'd see about just working with the whole 12-bit space in one raw file (the G9 has 10stops of DR range at ISO80). The "local contrast" box there does what it says: it increases "local contrast" in the sense of in I suppose a 50-pixel radius it boosts the contrast as opposed to a global contrast boost. I turned that on in the next shot. The DR sliders at the top allow the shadows and highlights to be clipped, there are various tone-mappings built into the program and you can "roll your own", but they all basically change the saturation/brightness of the pixels. This isn't what I want to do. I want to increase the contrast without blowing-out the shadows & highlights.

Aside from this it quickly convinced me that pushing the shadows of a G9 shot at ISO80 is not a good idea.
