Cocooned

When the enemy attacks, it looks like a storm cloud descending on the vineyard. Starlings flock in the thousands and will eat grape berries whole. They can strip a vineyard of a large portion of the crop in a matter of minutes, consuming a years worth of labor, care and tending. Some growers try gas cannons to scare the birds. Others are even rediscovering falconry as a way to deter the the smaller birds from congregating. But the nets are still the best protection. Miles of nets in some cases. A notable characteristic of the Tableaux historiques series is the topographical accuracy with which the settings for events are rendered. In this case Giradet’s accuracy can be measured against the building of the Pantheon, whose dome still dominants the Paris skyline today. In other instances the prints are rendered doubly interesting to architectural historians because they remain valuable records of places long since demolished: the Abbey prison, for example, was destroyed in 1854. Yet the artists involved with the project were not above the subtle manipulation of their settings for artistic or ideological effect. In this instance the size of the Pantheon is accentuated by the way Giradet has aligned different elements such as the statue of Rousseau in the foreground on the same axis as the flag fluttering from the dome so that it the building looms majestically over the foreground scene, and is endowed with an air of grandeur and authority. The skyline drops the nearer it gets to the Pantheon building, which seems all the more massive as a result.

In 1791 Soufflot’s church of Saint Genevieve had been secularised and re-dedicated to the memory of Great Men. The inscription added to the pediment at this point (and legible in Girardet’s design) reads, ‘Aux Grands Hommes La Patrie Reconnaisante’ – ‘To Great Men, the Fatherland is Grateful’.’ During the Revolution, a number of ‘Pantheonisations’ were planned, including that of the revolutionary ‘martyrs’ Le Pelletier, Marat, and Bara, (although, because remains could only be translated to the Pantheon ten years after death, none of these were actually carried out). In this instance it is Jean-Jacques Rousseau who is accorded the singular honour of being pantheonised, an event that took place with much fanfare on the 11th October 1794. This print bears witness to the elaborate ceremony that surrounded such an occasion and the huge number of people involved: we see a procession snaking its way to the massive doors of the Pantheon. Typically the communal ceremonies and festivals that punctuated the French revolutionary calendar looked to the world of classical antiquity for visual and ideological inspiration. In this instance note the classical dress worn by those bearing the model of Rousseau seated in the shade of a tree or the Roman-inspired standards carried by others in the procession.

Waiting for me to drop down

On my way down Spooky Canyon I caught up with a hiking club that included Karen's (the hiker who stayed behind in Dry Gulch with my wife) husband, Bob. Here we work our way pretty much straight down to a large collection of chockstones, that lodged here during flash floods.

Early Monday morning (4.19.2010), with a light day pack and cameras, we drove down the Hole In The Rock Road a little over 12 miles and turned into Escalante’s “Devil’s Garden”. I had driven the HITR road four times over the last few years for a hike at:
Zebra and Tunnel slot canyons
Davis Gulch (near the end of the road)
Hurricane Wash (where my wife and I backpacked down Coyote Gulch in 2009), and
Egypt Trailhead for a hike to the Golden Cathedral and Neon Canyon.

On each of those trips I had no idea that Devil’s Garden existed. Not until I saw a flickr friend’s photos of Metate Arch in Devil’s Garden, was I even aware of it. So I made sure we had plenty of time to visit it on this trip. It was our first stop Monday morning. We really enjoyed it and had the entire area all to ourselves.

After leaving Devil’s Garden we drove to the Dry Fork Coyote Gulch trailhead to hike down to the bottom of: Peekaboo; Spooky; and Brimstone Canyons. The plan was to make the loop hike, up Peekaboo and down Spooky. I wasn’t sure if my wife would be able to make it up and down this route, so we had discussed all the permutations of up and back hiking or her letting me make a quick run through it if needed.

On the way to the outlet to Peekaboo, we met a lady hiker, whom I will call Karen. Her husband and bunch of hiking club members had already left to do the up Peekaboo; down Spooky route, and then with ropes and equipment, hike some of Brimstone. Karen had opted out and so was content to hike up and down Dry Fork and just enjoy the scenery.

She hiked with us over to the short “climb” up into Peekaboo to give my wife a hand if needed, getting up into that canyon. I had brought leather gloves for us both and a short section of rope and nylon webbing to help my wife. To make this short, my wife got halfway up and we both decided it wasn’t a good idea for her to try to go farther. So, she and Karen worked up a plan to hike the wash together while I hiked the Peekaboo/Spooky route solo.

I enjoyed the hike up Peekaboo. Slickrock hiking, dry, very scenic. Quiet. I found the obvious trail leading across the canyon rim that would run from the upper portion of Peekaboo over to the entry into Spooky. At least when I arrived I hoped I had arrived at Spooky and not the top of Brimstone by mistake. I had grabbed my map, both cameras, and leather gloves, but left my pack with water, candy, GPS, and more maps, with my wife.

So I decided to continue down what I hoped was Spooky and pledged not to go over any pour overs that I couldn’t get back up. A short distance down Spooky I heard voices, which was a relief to me, unless they were coming UP Spooky as it is a narrow passage.
It was Karen’s husband (I will call him Bob) and the hiking club, most of the hikers of my age (old).

Bob and I got along well so we exchanged cameras and I followed his hiking club group on through Spooky back down to the Dry Fork of Coyote. There I thanked the hiking club for their company (at the time I had no idea there were so many of them since the narrow confines of Spooky allowed me to see and interact with only four of the members.

I found my wife and Karen waiting in a cool shade part of Dry Fork and the three of us hiked back up to the trailhead together. I was really pleased to have completed this hike that had been on my “to do” list and that I had such an accommodating, understanding and helpful wife.

My wife and I drove back to Escalante at a slow pace, and met up with our friends from Washington, (Jason and Lusha), that night for dinner.

Road Trip - Utah April 17th - 24th, 2010: My wife and I headed for Southern Utah, just before midnight on Friday the 16th of April (after she got off work at her part time job). We drove straight through to Southern Utah, to take advantage of the good weather forecast early on in our trip. Storms were forecast for later in the trip and in fact we got a pretty good taste of same on Wednesday the 21st.

Desert gem - Calf Creek falls

Tuesday morning (4.20.2010) Jason, Lusha, my wife, and I - - left Escalante to take the Lower Calf Creek Falls hike together. It clouded up by the end of our hike, but there were blue skies on our way up to the falls.

On the way to the falls, Lusha and I waded across Calf Creek and scrambled up to some cliff dwelling ruins and pictographs to get some photographs, while Jason and my wife continued on the main trail up to the waterfalls.

Hiking back down the canyon from Lower Calf Creek falls, we ran into “Barbara and Anita”, two “trail friends” my wife had met while on the hike in Dry Fork Coyote Gulch, the day before. So while they visited on the trail, Jason, Lusha and I waded Calf Creek and scrambled up the opposite canyon wall to yet some other pictograph panels (some of which had been sadly vandalized).

Back in Escalante, Jason and Lusha drove out to Devil’s Garden while my wife and I visited the Escalante Rangers station and shopped in Escalante. At the end of the day the four of us got together for a nice dinner and visit at Escalante Outfitters. We discussed our plans for the next day which would include traveling the Burr Trail Road from Boulder to Notom and then some hiking near Goblin Valley State Park.

> Hike to the Wild Horse twin caves across the slickrock. Hit with hailstorm as we arrived and watched a “mud storm” (thunderstorm falling through a dust storm), travel across to the east of us. The wind caught up with us at Goblin Valley State Park.
> Revisit the pictographs on Temple Mountain.
> Visit Goblin Valley State Park (my second visit and my wife’s first). Howling winds.

Thursday 4.22.2010
> Drive from Hanksville (we had a motel room there) to South Mule Canyon.
> Hike two miles up South Mule Canyon photographing “house on fire” ruins along the way.
> Check with Kane Ranger Station. Decide to skip a hike down Kane Gulch (too much water and mud on route).
> Take short, but beautiful hike to Yellow House ruins.
> Drive Valley of the gods loop from west to east.
> Drive up through Bluff to Monticello, Utah (cold winds). Stay in motel there.

Friday 4.23.2010
> Drive Monticello, Price, Salt Lake City, Wendover, Wells, Jackpot (where my wife got to spend a couple of hours at the penny slot investment center at Cactus Pete casino - while I slept in the truck canopy bed and read). Drive through the night through Boise, Baker City, Pendleton, and on to our home in Eastern Washington.

> Arrived home at 5:30 am.

Note:
As long planned (discussions started back in November of 2009): we met a couple, also from Eastern Washington in Escalante on Monday night. These nice friends, whom we met through flickr, joined us on all the hikes and drives we took on Tuesday and Wednesday, as well as the South Mule Canyon hike on Thursday morning.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time with Jason and Lusha. Their company added greatly to the fun we had on this trip. We took different routes down to Escalante as well as back home, so we could all customize a portion of this road trip to fit our individual “must see/must do” priorities. A good time was had by all.

Well lets just explain it a little bit ... My sister has been in the Computer all day and night . So i took the hp mini and thought i could process the picture i took at the last minute . But it came to my notice that netbooks dont really measure up to the system requirements of photoshop .....

So yay i ended up at picnik .... (Yeah picnik, i think this picture might show how i feel about picnik) .. Its the most kiddy like procesing tool and its most ridiculos and mostly me that i ended on that ... it even told me that pictures more than 16 mp can slow the process down . So i just quickly process and happily closed picnik and here i am uploading a telling . Hope u like the picture . Ill see ya . I think im going to sleep (:

Set deep into the forest, this is where you loose yourself to nature... Last time I was in this area it was flooded, so I took advantage of the dry season and set up a shoot with Tricia.

If I were to opt for natural lighting the image would be flat, no nice highlights, reflectors too will not be much help as the light would be too diffused to reflect, the few instances the sun would penetrate the canopy, it would cast unsightly random patterns of leaves, so the only way I wanted to do this was the strobist way.

Strobist Info: One Canon 430ex 45deg right side/high at 3/4 power, shot through portable Magic Softbox, through Cactus type wireless trigger. Second strobe bare Sunpak 383 at 1/2 power right rear side pointed towards back area of the model.

It was hard to move around the forest with expanded soft boxes and light stands, with all the branches sticking out, you had to move slow to avoid it being entangled or ripped.

Shade Tree Lane

Like everywhere else I guess, we also had an unusually long and rainy winter (relatively speaking). But spring is upon us and sun is shining nice and bright. Its already in 80s F (20s C) in Tucson. And it won't be long when its in 3 digits.

I was working at home, and had to get out and take a picture. This is just outside the house in the private road, the driveway to the left is to our house.

No wonder this street is called Shade Tree Lane, quite unusual for southwest desert.

I'm not really into selfportraits, because I'm not a beauty so I'm better off behind my camera. ^^ Unfortunately no one of my friends wanted to be in front of my lens half naked, so I had to do it myself. This is the first version and I'm not satisfied with it. There is not enough light...guess I need two torches. I occupied the bathroom for two hours and my flatmate wasn't happy with that at all. That's the price you have to pay when you live together with a hobby-photographer. ;) Our bathroom is the only room in our flat where the roller shutter works so there was no other choice.
It took so much time to get a sharp shot. I don't have a selftimer, so I had to run in front of my camera and behind it hundred times. Another problem was that my lens wasn't able to focus, because it was too dark. It took all my patience to adjust the focus.
