Amazon.com Tent Guide Selecting a Tent Fortunately, there are all kinds of tents for weekend car campers, Everest expeditions, and everything in-between. Here are a few things to keep in mind: Expect the Worst In general, it's wise to choose a tent that's designed to withstand the worst possible conditions you think you'll face. For instance, if you're a summer car camper in a region where weather is predictable, an inexpensive family or all purpose tent will likely do the trick--especially if a vehicle is nearby and you can make a mad dash for safety when bad weather swoops in! If you're a backpacker, alpine climber or bike explorer, or if you like to car camp in all seasons, you'll want to take something designed to handle more adversity. Three- and Four-Season Tents For summer, early fall and late spring outings, choose a three-season tent. At minimum, a quality three season tent will have lightweight aluminum poles, a reinforced floor, durable stitching, and a quality rain-fly. Some three-season tents offer more open-air netting and are more specifically designed for summer backpacking and other activities. Many premium tents will feature pre-sealed, taped seams and a silicone-impregnated rain-fly for enhanced waterproofness. For winter camping or alpine travel, go with a four season model. Because they typically feature more durable fabric coatings, as well as more poles, four-season tents are designed to handle heavy snowfall and high winds without collapsing. Of course, four-season tents exact a weight penalty of about 10 to 20 percent in trade for their strength and durability. They also tend to be more expensive. Domes and Tunnels Tents are broadly categorized into two types, freestanding, which can stand up on their own, and those that must be staked down in order to stand upright. Freestanding tents often incorporate a dome-shaped design, and most four-season tents are constructed this way because a dome leaves no flat spots on the outer surface where snow can collect. Domes are also inherently stronger than any other design. Meanwhile, many three-season models employ a modified dome configuration called a tunnel. These are still freestanding, but they require fewer poles than a dome, use less fabric, and typically have a rectangular floor-plan that offers less storage space than a dome configuration. Many one and two-person tents are not freestanding, but they make up for it by being more lightweight. Because they use fewer poles, they can also be quicker to set up than a dome. Size Matters Ask yourself how many people you'd like to fit in your fabric hotel now and in the future. For soloists and minimalists, check out one-person tents. If you're a mega-minimalist, or if you have your eye on doing some big wall climbs, a waterproof-breathable bivy sack is the ticket. Some bivy sacks feature poles and stake points to give you a little more breathing room. Also, if you don't need bug protection and you want to save weight, check out open-air shelters. Families who plan on car camping in good weather can choose from a wide range of jumbo-sized tents that will accommodate all your little ones with room to spare. A wide range of capacities is also available for three- and four-season backpacking and expedition tents. Remember, though, the bigger the tent you buy, the heavier it will be, although it's easy to break up the tent components among several people in your group. It's also helpful to compare the volume and floor-space measurements of models you're considering. (12) New York County Courthouse (Tweed Courthouse) Civic Center, Manhattan The Tweed Courthouse, although associated by name and history with one of New York's most notoriously corrupt city governments, is architecturally one of the city's grandest and most important civic monuments. Built over a period of twenty years, it is the product of two of New York's most prominent architects, John Kellum and Leopold Eidlitz, and of two of the most disparate 19th-century architectural movements, the mid-century commercial ltalianate, and the later highly theoretical Victorian medievalism. As conceived by Kellum the courthouse was a grand Italianate CIVIC monument, modeled both on English precedents and on the United States Capitol, with details developed in the 1850s and 1860s for New York's commercial buildings. Eidlitz's additions, comprising the southern wing and several basic alterations to Kellum's rotunda, reflect an opposing architectural philosophy: an American version of organic architecture, expressed through medieval forms, of which Eidlitz was New York's most distinguished theorist. The Tweed Courthouse is one of the few and one of the best of both types in a large institutional building, and although the architects' approaches were antithetical, they combined in the courthouse to form an overwhelmingly grand and rich public building. Besides City Hall, the Tweed Courthouse is the only survivor of the man) important civic buildings that once stood in City Hall Park. One hundred years after its completion, the Tweed stands as one of the city's finest civic monuments. The Courthouse rests on a low granIte bas,e. Above the bas~. the brick walls are .clad in smooth-faced marble ashlar, purchased from the Sheffield and Eastchester quarries, though the rear wing is faced in another type of marble. lt is possible that other quarries might have been used as well, but no documentation has been found. The exterior of the building is remarkably intact. The carved stone ornament--pedJ.Jllent., foliated brackets, pilasters--are weathered, but complete. The fine Corinthian entablature is unchanged. The major and most unsympathetic alteration was the removal of the monumental stairway in 1942, to permit the widening of Chambers Street. Two-over-two windows with a modest architrave trim are set into the rusticated first floor of the bays flanking the monumental entrance in the main block. Above the base the upper floor windows are separated by pilasters with molded capitals which have a prominent egg-and-dart echinus. Eyebrow casement windows pierce the frieze. There are two, one-and-one-half story high rusticated stone boxes attached to the window closest to the center in each bay. They match the stone and rustication on the facade and might be original. They are open on the top and were perhaps used for ventilation. 'he ornament is intact and original on these bays. The two, three-window-wide end wings project the depth of one window from the center bays. The second floor windows are similar to, but more elaborate than, the windows in the main block. Arched pediments and balustraded aprons set them apart. The trim is original and intact. The main facade is topped by a Corinthian entablature composed of an architrave, frieze, and modillioned cornice. The marble entablature is intact for the most part, with the exception of a few missing dentils and foliations. The balustrade above the two wings originally extended above the flanking bays in the main block but it was removed in the twentieth century. The east and west facades are identical. Each is composed of three bays, each with three windows, with a triangular pediment topping the center bay. The windows on the second and third floors in the center bay are the same as those above the main entrance. Wood doors on the first floor have frames with simpler, flatter, and less flamboyant detailing than the ornament generally seen in the Courthouse. They appear to be later additions, but no documentation has been found to suggest when they were installed. A modern metal awning was installed over the door on the east facade. The flanking bays of the side facades and the wings on the main facade share the same ornamental treatment. All of the details on the east and west facades, with the exception of the doors and a few windows, are original and intact. The rear, or south, facade, is composed of three sections and is the same as the main facade, except for the center wing. In Kellum's design this bay was to have a portico with Corinthian columns, similar to the north portico, but it was never built. Instead, the south wing was added when Leopold Eidlitz finished the building in the late 1870s. The four-story wing is three windows wide and three windows deep. The marble ashlar facing has a smooth finish and is similar to the main building in color. The design of each floor is different. It was a deceptively heavy cake, and I had to carry it down a VERY steep driveway in the Dandenong Ranges. Unfortunately, I damaged the edge of the bottom tier, and had to drive all the way back home (40 mins) to get my repair kit, because I was being cocky and figured I didn't need to worry about it. I had to return to the wedding, and back home AGAIN, after my repair failed. In total, this delivery took me 3.5 hours, it should have taken me just over an hour! Chiffon wall from cocktail area Great for any event. This is an awesome looking freestanding wall of chiffon. You can see the dinner tables on the other side- and the candles had a great glowing effect. The inside of the dinner area was all white drape with the cocktail area being all black. The Boy & La Cucuracha's Siren Song No matter what else could be said about La Cucuracha, she was a cheap date, no need to deal with the messiness of real life. She fed off of The Helix Boy, growing stronger as he grew weaker. She devoured it all--his life, his mind, his heart, his soul. She fed off of him. More and more, The Boy found himself hiding away in the dark, losing himself in the glow of the computer screen where she lived, entering her world, fearing life. She called herself his "Mrs.", he called her "my baby," they had "their song," though they'd never met and never would, (that was her allure--he would never let that happen, reality terrified him.) La Cucuracha Photoshopped his profile pictures to look like she and The Boy were together, , creating a twenty-first century trompe l'oeil—at one point even superimposing her national flag over his face. People in the real world who knew The Boy, professionally and personally, knew beyond a doubt that his mind had slipped away. He hid behind the cyber facade, the character he'd created for the internet. In the real world, he spoke of his fear of his "enemies." His paranoia and phobias grew--of bridges and heights, of riding in cars, of animals, of crossing streets; his terror of taking a chance; of love...of getting hurt. He sunk deeper into the screen, descending into isolation and fear; windows covered, he sat in his dark rented attic room in the crumbling house, lost in the screens--watching films on an old and dusty tv when he wasn't "with" La Cucuracha. He masked his recluse despot reality behind the illusion of the computer, created an online persona and life until even he was taken in and could not escape. Only La Cucuracha was real to him now. He told her the Woman did not exist (this came as a surprise to his friends who knew him and the woman together.) The chimera was safely on the other side of the world, she put on a good show. He watched endless streams of dvd films on the old television from the mattress on his floor, then wrote about them on an obscure blog online. Played guitar and sang alone in his dark attic room in the crumbling house, posting songs for La Cucuracha to MySpace. Rarely leaving the house at all now, the illusion was complete. Isolated, paranoid and alone but for La Cucuracha, love, light and life passed him by. In the end all that remained of The Boy was the husk of an empty shell, Alone in the moldering dark and littered squalor, smelling of mildew and decay, lit only by the colorless glow of the screen, he had slipped into insanity, lured by the clicking siren song of La Cucuracha. Woman, flesh and blood, loved The Boy. They had attended the same childhood school, and met again 45 years later. Now, through the seasons, they were inseparable; they loved, cracked up at life, shared secrets and friends. He left his dark attic room; they went everywhere together hand in hand, curled together to watch a thousand movies on his mattress on the floor. They held hands through thirty two films at the film festival, and he called her the Queen of Cinema P. She brought him food, stocked his cupboards; they cooked for each other. She brought him medicine when he was sick, balm when he was wounded, sheets and pillows for his mattress on the floor. He covered the holes in his coat with duct tape and long strips of packing tape, the Woman mended his clothes. She edited the manuscript of a tawdry, cheap dime-store novel he had written. He said he felt human again, and Woman did, too. Arm in arm, hand in hand, he introduced Woman to his friends as his girlfriend. Woman reached for him, cried for him, tried to pull him from the tentacled grasp of La Cucuracha, but in the end, he slipped away into the small dark movie of his mind. Woman could only watch helplessly, weeping, filled with pity and love as he faded back into the small dark fantasy of the screen, a sad savant, devoured by La Cucuracha. (While La Cucuracha wasn't the only woman that had slipped into his virtual delusion [the kindhearted Grecian who called him William-o, he said, was "loaded"], La Cucuracha sang the siren song that brought him down.) He sat in the dark, lit only by the cold blue light of his computer screen, tattered hand towels at the ready, balanced on his broken chair, his only chair, next to his mattress on the littered floor, playing his guitar, composing and posting songs for "my baby", La Cucuracha. The woman last saw him at the end of 2010. A hunched 60-year old man, dwarfish, with old platform shoes, white tufts of unkempt thinning hair, his remaining teeth yellowed and rotting, pitted pasty skin and chronically dripping nose. A broken, cowardly little man, he was alone with his phobias and fears, consumed by La Cucuracha. In the spring, the woman returned home to find he had entered her apartment with the key he still had while she was away. He left books and cd's she had loaned him and took MTPI no.13: Nebulous Disappearance Productions Presents Medea For this miniature transient public installation, I wanted to construct a realistic sculptural still-life of a staged theatrical production. I chose to recreate a scene from Death of a Salesman using unconventional casting. For the scene, Willie Loman was to be played by Richard Nixon and his sons by Ralph Nader and the political theorist Robert Nozick (not to be confused with conservative pundit Robert Novak, a true American patriot unjustly pilloried by the Left for exposing one of the spies in our midst – Valerie Plame. And to those who claim “but she was our spy”, I say a spy is a spy is a spy.) I went down to Pearl Art Supplies to buy modeling clay, but was scared off by cost of the roughly 1,200 5lb blocks I’d need to complete my vision and the impracticality of fitting them all in a ’97 Honda Accord in one trip. It’s no wonder so many sculptors these days are working with scrap metal and found objects. I needed to find cheaper actors. So I bought some mannequins at a local thrift store and quickly recreated a preliminary version of the scene in the laundry room of my apartment building. The result was uninspiring. It lacked a certain verisimilitude. When you get right down to it, part of what makes live drama so riveting is that the actors tend to move and speak. The only play I ever heard of which bucked this trend was the 1917 production of Eugene Neublanc’s “The Paralysis”, in which the great French actor Henri Recard reclined motionless in a bathtub staring at the ceiling for 3 hours – or at least would have if the riot had not broken out. So I needed speech and movement, and frankly, possibly a better understanding of how to actually stage a drama. Where better to turn than the ancient Greeks? I settled on Euripedes’ Medea. I identified with Medea in the sense that I’m pretty sure I’ve dated some of her descendents. I updated the text to take place in Greenwich, Connecticutt circa 1986 and slightly tweaked the main characters of Medea and Jason into champion dog breeders (Medea’s two children were now “Gepetto”, a miniature-schnauzer, and “Beauty”, a Chinese crested hairless). For the vocals, I was able to remix audio clips from the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings, the collector’s edition DVD of “The Best of the Dean Martin Roasts”, and a tape of the 1985 Westiminster Kennel Club Dog Show. After blanketing the city with fliers for “Nebulous Disappearance Productions presents Medea”, I ended up staging it in the storefront window of an abandoned building in Olde City, choosing a curtain time of 2 AM to capitalize on the foot traffic as the bars let out. Apparently, there are not that many fans of experimental drama on the streets at that time. And apparently, the bouncers at these establishments are not very good at making sure no one leaves with a beer bottle. Less than 15 minutes into the performance, after repeated cries of "this sucks!" from the assembled crowd, the bottles started flying. I had to join in myself at one point to get away in one piece, although I do feel a little guilty at pointing to a harmless street musician and yelling, “There’s the director there! He’s the one! Get him!” to cover my exit. Maybe Euripides was right: Many a hopeless matter gods arrange. (5) Road under I-70 to Sinbad Doubling back west, after exiting south off I-70 we passed under two large culvert passages to reach the north side of the interstate, where we headed west to the Head of Sinbad pictograph panels. After we completed our hike to the Rochester Creek rock art panel, we drove the Moore Cutoff road to I-70. It had been a long day and we hoped to get as close as we could to the “Head of Sinbad” pictograph panels, where we wanted to camp for the night in the back of our pickup truck. I had all kinds of maps and copies from various guide books, along with the pamphlet the folks at the Emery, Utah gas station had given me. Still I wanted to make sure we would head in the right direction so we wouldn’t waste valuable “road trip” find, by getting lost in the wide open desert country of the San Rafael Swell. We took exit 131 off I-70. I had traveled the Temple Mt. road to Goblin Valley in the past, and this looked like the “shortest” way into Locomotive Point and the Head of Sinbad panels. The BLM map on the information board on the south side of I-70 cinched it. It clearly showed the turns I needed to make and the BLM road numbers I would take to get to our destination. It was getting late in the day so we headed down the dirt road, making a right at the proper place and then we came to the “culvert” passage that would take us back under I-70, heading north. The dirt road was easy up to this point, but the “rock ramp” built up by off road enthusiasts to get through one of the two big culvert passages looked like it required due care and caution. Once under the interstate the sandy route to Locomotive Point was a pleasure to travel. We visited the two panel areas. I am going to give them some names so I can refer to them more easily in this narrative. The Head of Sinbad panels face south and are little more than a mile north of I-70. In fact, now that I know where they are, I will be able to easily pick the area out, when driving I-70 between Green River, Utah and Fremont Junction. The Head of Sinbad “west panel” was disappointing. The heads were missing for the entire row of pictographs. What I have read is that these 3,000 year old pictographs have not been vandalized, yet to me, it looked as though the missing upper portion of the pictographs - - didn’t look natural (if so, the heads should be laying on the ground, below where they fell - -they weren’t). Next we drove over to the Head of Sinbad “West panel”. This was what we had come to see and it was impressive. There are two sets of figures on at the West panel and they are not far apart. Though the day was almost gone, we spent time staring up at these intriguing pictographs and taking photographs. Next we drove west then north on a very sandy four wheel drive track until we found a side road leading up to a sandstone cliff sheltered camping spot, under a large pinon pine tree. Here we slept the night under a black desert sky filled with brilliant white stars. Wonderful! Early the next morning, while my wife organized our traveling gear I clambered up the steep sides of the surrounding sandstone to get some “dawn” photos of the area we had camped. After leaving camp we opted to skip visiting the nearby arch and get back to the West panel of the pictographs, to have the area to ourselves and get some photos with the early morning light. This we did. After retracing our route back to I-70 we headed east bound for the Black Dragon panel and for a hike up nearby Petroglyph Canyon. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Road Trip - Utah April 17th - 24th, 2010: My wife and I headed for Southern Utah, just before midnight on Friday the 16th of April (after she got off work at her part time job). We drove straight through to Southern Utah, to take advantage of the good weather forecast early on in our trip. Storms were forecast for later in the trip and in fact we got a pretty good taste of same on Wednesday the 21st. Short hike. > Pictograph Canyon pictographs. Short but interesting hike. > Drive Hanksville, Torrey, Boulder, to Escalante (check into motel) Monday 4.19.2010 > Drive out the Hole In The Rock Road. Visit Devil’s Garden and Metate Arch. > Drive to Dry Fork of Coyote Gulch. Hike down to Peek-a-boo and Spooky slot canyons. I hiked the loop up Peek-a-boo and down Spooky while my wife hiked with another lady hiker up Dry Fork and then down to the bottom of Spooky. Tuesday 4.20.2010 > Hike Lower Calf Creek Falls (my third hike here and my wife’s second) and scramble up to two sets of pictograph panels. Otherwise in the most likely scenario of the incredibly small clip falling out during installation, it will be caught by the paper, and not fall into the bottom of your transmission. Arizona Flywheelers 2011 This thing was wonderful to watch and listen to. It's an Allan Brothers oil engine built around 1903 in Aberdeen, Scotland and was used to power English shipbuilding equipment during World War I. It has a 9-1/2 inch bore, a 17 inch stroke, produces 19 horsepower at 230 rpm, and weighs a dainty 3 tons. It now belongs to brothers Wayne & Brennen Peters. I slowed my shutter speed down a bit to catch some blur on those 54 inch flywheels. The large black rectangular box is just a sun canopy that they hadn't set up yet. farming whilst this family farmed their field, the children were dancing behind the tractor which was playing very loud bollywood music, and the sun was reflecting off the tinsel decorations hanging from the driver's canopy. india, november 2007. The young couple in this picture are a part of our photography group. At one point it started raining...while we all sat in the cars, these guys set out for a stroll.... when I saw them walking under the umbrella, arms around each other....
