Approaching Melbourne, Australia (NOT Asia!)

Approaching Melbourne, Australia (NOT Asia!)

Approaching Melbourne after a 9 hour flight from Bangkok. In these 9 hours, one not only changes countries, but hemispheres (Northern to Southern) and Summer to Winter seasons.

It is interesting to note that Australia, as an actual stand-alone continent, was long considered to not be part of Asia...at least by Australians I guess. Never mind that it appears to be IN Asia...you know, all those countries that appear to comprise one half of this side of the Earth. But actually it is part of something called "Oceania". I had to Google it, but Oceania is not a fabled land from the "Narnia" movies or "Land of the Lost", but an actual place that is actually NOT Asia.

"Oceania" is a place free from disease-ridden wooden masks, disease-ridden fruits and vegetables, and the like. Also, unlike the phony "pubs" in Asia, patrons of pubs in Oceania are not restricted to actually drinking INSIDE the establishment, but are more likely to be standing in the alley outside the pub. I often wondered what was the use of all those tables and chairs in restaurants here in SE Asia, when standing outside on the curb with my brewski in hand makes much more sense.

I watched the arrival video on the plane as we approached the city. Unlike the silly welcome videos that are presented when we approach Thailand, which encourages visitors to shop, be entertained and enjoy themselves, the video showed a variety of arriving visitors being caught by customs for bringing in restricted items ... like one of those deadly wooden masks ... and the gleeful grins of the customs people for once again saving the day! The last we see of the actor in the video, she appears to hang her head in shame, apparently to be punished offline somewhere...actually, if I recall correctly, everyone in the welcome video is apprehended with some type of illegal import. I felt safer even before I landed!

In the airport taxi, there were signs that said the driver had the right to ask for payment in advance, or to suddenly kick me out if he felt threatened, and that a webcam in the taxi was transmitting my every move back to taxi HQ, so I better not try anything. Oceania is a very safe place !

The city of Melbourne has a tram that runs down the center of major streets. I took a tram down Collins Street on my final evening ... as I observed my fellow passengers, I noted that Oceanians look very much like ... Asians. About 90% of the people in the tram were of Asian or Indian origin. But later, I decided that probably all these people were probably tourists like me, not actual Oceanians ... well, at least I could be assume that they were not carrying any deadly wooden masks !

On a less facetious note, Australia has a great online visa application system. Everyone has to apply for a visa ... even us Americans, who normally can go almost everywhere with visa-on-arrival status (probably Americans are notorious for wooden face mask violations!). Anyway, I asked my secretary to apply for a multiple entry visa for me, and 5 minutes later, I had it! No embassy visits, and no physical stamp in my passport. Other countries could learn from this ...

???????????????? Zitting Cisticola

???????????????? Zitting Cisticola

Latkrabang, Bangkok, Thailand.
The Zitting Cisticola or Streaked Fantail Warbler[2] (Cisticola juncidis), is an Old World warbler in the genus Cisticola. This genus is sometimes split off with various other southern warbler genera and given family status as the Cisticolidae. This species was previously known as Fan-tailed Warbler , but the current name gives consistency with the many tropical cisticola species.

It has a very wide breeding range including southern Europe, Africa outside the deserts and rainforest, and southern Asia down to northern Australia. It is mainly resident, but some East Asian populations migrate south to winter in warmer areas.

This species is a rare vagrant to northern Europe, mostly as a spring overshoot. Its European range is generally expanding, although northern populations are especially susceptible to hard winters.

Zitting Cisticolas are very small insectivorous birds. These small passerines are found in tall grassland habitats, often near water. Male cisticolas are polygamous; the female builds a discreet nest deep in the grasses, often binding living leaves into the soft fabric of felted plant-down, cobwebs, and grass. The Zitting Cisticola's nest is a cup shape with a canopy of tied-together leaves or grasses overhead for camouflage; 3-6 eggs are laid.

These warblers are brown above, heavily streaked with black. The underparts are whitish, and the tail is broad, white-tipped and flicked frequently, giving rise to the alternative name for the species. The adult males have less crown streaking and more back marking than the females, but there is no great difference between the sexes or the eighteen geographical races.

Although this species is unlikely to be confused with other warblers in Europe, where it is the only cisticola, it is very similar to other members of its genus. It is best distinguished from its many African relatives by its zit-zit-zit song, given in flight. The song is always the easiest identification criterion for this genus.

These birds are more easily heard than seen, and because of their small size (about 10 cm) not always easy to recognise, particularly outside the breeding season when they seldom emerge from their grasses.

Bellview Airlines Flight 210

Bellview Airlines Flight 210

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. On 22 October 2005, Bellview Airlines Flight 210, a Boeing 737-200 aircraft, crashed shortly after taking off from Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos en route to the Nigerian capital Abuja, killing all 117 people on board. Bellview suspended all flights from Lagos pending an investigation. The plane sent out a distress signal shortly after leaving the airport. Radio communication with the plane was then lost due to an intense electrical storm. Boeing officials have offered to assist in the investigation if invited to by the Nigerian government. Boeing officials have conjectured that a combination of poor maintenance of the plane by the ground crew together with a lightning strike to the right wing of the plane caused the right engine to ignite, causing the aircraft to bank heavily to the left and eventually lose control.

Naval Commander Harris B. Millerd

Naval Commander Harris B. Millerd

Commander Harris B. Millerd, Ret. died peacefully in his sleep July 2 at the Coarsegold Sierra Estates assisted living home in the company of his wife Mary Castner Millerd, his eldest son Harris B. Millerd, Jr. of Kentucky and his eldest daughter Mary Jean LaGarde of Massachusetts.
Commander Millerd was born September 30, 1918 at the Harris Ranch in Mariposa, now known as the Ponderosa Basin, which was homesteaded by his grandfather, James Marshall Harris in 1863. His grandmother Alice May Harris thought it best to for her daughter to stay at the Harris Ranch until the baby was old enough to travel back to the Millerd ranch in Coarsegold which his paternal grandfather George Millerd had began homesteading in 1910. Thus it was that Alice May Millerd holding her six month old son climbed onto a stack of banded lumber at Sugar Pine and road the flume back down to Coarsegold where her husband Hugh Henry Millerd, a flume herder for the Sugar Pine lumber company, plucked his wife and young son from this fast floating lumber train.
In his teens he and his dad returned to the Harris Ranch to help build the Harris sawmill which processed thousands of board feet of ponderosa pine for the war efforts. While at the Harris ranch he met Ed Nicols a neighboring landowner who was also the manager of the Merced airport. He and his younger brother Glenn L. Millerd persuaded the manager to give them flying lessons in exchange for their labor. Harris said they earned $0.75 an hour to scrub the airport runway, clean engine parts, and test motors; the flying lessons cost $8 an hour. When he enlisted in the Navy in 1942 his mechanical and flying knowledge garnered him a rank of Petty Officer 3rd class, AMM (Aviation Machinist Mate). During WWII he was stationed in the South Pacific Islands of Guam and Corregidor. He petitioned his California Congressman to recommend him for a commission for officer training; he was awarded that status, attended flight school and earned his wings in [ ] He flew 21 years as an active aviator and became trainer himself in the Navy flight schools. He retired in 1963 from the Navy as a full Commander. As an officer he served in occupied Japan.
In 1955 he adopted a family of five Texas children ages 2 to 11— all at one time!
The adoption of his “instant family” brought him positive recognition in the Navy base newsletter in Corpus Christi where he was serving at the time. He was fond of noting that instant fatherhood was a true test of endurance and a shock to the pocketbook. Throughout his life, In true military style, he kept a log book of all the birthdays, graduations, anniversaries of his 5 adopted children, 2 step children 21 grandchildren, [ number?] great grandchildren, 3 nieces and 3 nephews and never tired of bragging about how great they all were.
After he retired, he lived in Phoenix, Arizona, but loved to spend summers at the Coarsegold ranch panning for gold and helping his dad restore fencing on the 1020 acre homestead. He was proud to see his parents honored as Grand Marshalls for the Coarsegold rodeo.
When his father died in 1972 he and his wife Mary Castner Millerd moved to the Coarsegold ranch to care for his mother who passed way in 1979. In addition to his eldest son and daughter, he is survived by his brother Glenn L. Millerd of Marysville,California; his sister Merylyn S. Whited of Coarsegold; his son Chet Millerd of Temecula, California; his other two daughters, Alice Ann Henne of North Carolina, Julie Beth Shible of St. Petersburg, Florida; and Mary’s two daughter’s Judy Kelton of Garden City, Utah and Geraldine Evans of Phoenix, Arizona.
In lieu of a standard memorial service he asked that family and friends who had known him throughout his long and colorful life contact his sister Merylyn Whited (559-683-0762; or at PO Box 849 Coarsegold 93614) with a vignette. She and her husband Zygmund John Zee are compiling a DVD with family history, news articles, old photos and the vignettes collected from family and the community. The DVD will be given to those who submitted stories.

Stearman N2S-3 Kaydet

Stearman N2S-3 Kaydet

Following their widespread use as primary trainers during World War II, many Stearman N2S biplanes were purchased by private owners for use as crop dusters. In 1990, with President George Herbert Walker Bush in office, various parties initiated a search to locate any crop dusters still in existence that in their previous military service may have been flown by the Commander in Chief during his time as an aviation cadet and naval aviator. Cross-checking the President's log book entries with the records of various federal agencies revealed that five N2S-3 aircraft flown by Bush at Naval Air Station (NAS) Minneapolis, Minnesota still existed in private hands. Among them was the aircraft owned by former World War II and Korean War pilot and retired TWA Captain Jack Parker of Essex, Connecticut. His aircraft logged two flights with the Aviation Cadet George H.W. Bush at the controls in January 1943 and finished the war with 2,860 flight hours on the airframe. After the war, it operated with Terry's Aircraft Sales and Surplus and after purchase by Parker, towed banners and flew at warbird gatherings.

Acquired by the museum from Parker in 1992, the aircraft was painted in standard wartime Navy markings (Parker has operated it in Army Air Forces livery) and is currently in indoor static display.
Notes It was perhaps the most produced biplane in all of aviation history with 10,346 examples rolling off the production line of the Stearman Aircraft Company between 1934 and 1945. And though the company christened the trainer with the name "Kaydet," those who flew and maintained it universally called it the Stearman. Initially designed as an entry into a procurement contest for a new Army Air Corps trainer, the Stearman served extensively in the Navy as well, with the sea service accepting the first of 4,318 examples of the biplane in the late-1930s. The earliest version was called the NS by the Navy, with later versions designated N2S. By the time of World War II, both Army and Navy operated standardized versions of the aircraft with interchangeable parts, unique in an era in which joint operations was not standard. No matter the uniform they wore, those associated with the Stearman respected it for its ruggedness, ease of maintenance, low operational costs, and flight characteristics. Challenging to an inexperienced pilot was its tendency to ground-loop in crosswind landings.

The N2S-3 on display was flown twice by President George H.W. Bush on solo flights during his training at Naval Air Station (NAS) Minneapolis, Minnesota, and was acquired after serving as a crop duster. Another N2S-5 in the museum collection was donated by Apollo Astronaut Eugene Cernan and is on display at Naval Air Station (NAS) Whiting Field, Florida.

North by Northwest (50th Anniversary Edition in Blu-ray Book Packaging)

North by Northwest (50th Anniversary Edition in Blu-ray Book Packaging)

Cary Grant teams with director Alfred Hitchcock for the fourth and final time in this superlative espionage caper judged one of the American Film Institute's Top-100 American Films and spruced up with a new digital transfer and remixed Dolby Digital Stereo. Grant plays a Manhattan advertising executive plunged into a realm of spy (James Mason) and counterspy (Eva Marie Saint) and variously abducted, framed for murder, chased and in another signature set piece, crop-dusted. He also holds on for dear life from the facial features of the Presidents on Mount Rushmore (backlot sets were used). But don't expect the Master of Suspense to leave star or audience hanging.

A strong candidate for the most sheerly entertaining and enjoyable movie ever made by a Hollywood studio (with Citizen Kane, Only Angels Have Wings and Trouble in Paradise running neck and neck). Positioned between the much heavier and more profoundly disturbing Vertigo (1958) and the stark horror of Psycho (1960), North by Northwest (1959) is Alfred Hitchcock at his most effervescent in a romantic comedy-thriller that also features one of the definitive Cary Grant performances. Which is not to say that this is just "Hitchcock Lite"; seminal Hitchcock critic Robin Wood (in his book Hitchcock's Films Revisited) makes an airtight case for this glossy MGM production as one of The Master's "unbroken series of masterpieces from Vertigo to Marnie." It's a classic Hitchcock Wrong Man scenario: Grant is Roger O. Thornhill (initials ROT), an advertising executive who is mistaken by enemy spies for a U.S. undercover agent named George Kaplan. Convinced these sinister fellows (James Mason as the boss, and Martin Landau as his henchman) are trying to kill him, Roger flees and meets a sexy Stranger on a Train (Eva Marie Saint), with whom he engages in one of the longest, most convolutedly choreographed kisses in screen history. And, of course, there are the famous set pieces: the stabbing at the United Nations, the crop-duster plane attack in the cornfield (where a pedestrian has no place to hide), and the cliffhanger finale atop the stone faces of Mount Rushmore. Plus a sparkling Ernest Lehman script and that pulse-quickening Bernard Herrmann score. What more could a moviegoer possibly desire?--Jim Emerson
Also on the Blu-ray disc
North by Northwest is a great-looking Blu-ray disc, with a sharpness and colors that seem like you're watching the film for the first time. New on the 50th anniversary edition are a one-hour documentary on Hitchcock's work "The Master's Touch: Hitchcock's Signature Style," and a shorter one (25 min.) specifically about the film, "North by Northwest: One for the Ages." It's packaged in one of Warner's Blu-ray books, with trivia, character profiles, and stills and vintage art. Older extras include screenwriter Ernest Lehman's commentary track, a 90-minute profile of star Cary Grant, the documentary from 2000 "Destination Hitchcock: The Making of North by Northwest" hosted by Eva Marie-Saint, a music-only audio track, and theatrical trailers. --David Horiuchi

Iron Man VS Samus- Bill and Tom Play-By-Play

Iron Man VS Samus- Bill and Tom Play-By-Play

Hey guys! This was the first match. Now, see the thrilling battle, just as you voted for it to end. Enjoy!

Tom: From the Moon, orbiting the Earth at 221,463 miles, This... Is... The Dome!

Bill: It sure is, Tom. Ladies and gentlemen, I'm Bill Thomas.

Tom: And I'm Tom Williams. And today two living, breathing tanks will be facing off in our post apocalyptic arean.

Bill: That's right, Tom. A one manned army and a one womaned army, respectively.

Tom: Prepare you're eyes and ears for the onslaught that is Iron Man, the metal-head of Marvel versus Samus Aran, the Chozo trained martial warrior.

Bill: And the reason for the fight, three words: Advanced Battle Suits. Both are best known for their use of technology combined with smarts and skills. Not to mention their intense weaponry options.

Tom: Good call, Bill. Tony Stark is a mechanical genius. Able to design and build just about anything. And Samus Aran, orphaned at a young age, was raised and trained by the mysterious Chozo. Both utilize suits that would make Charlton Heston blush.

Bill: (Laughs) Good analogy. Our arena, The Dome, is a thirty-six square mile dome. Within it, a large city was built. With a large downtown area, airport, residential areas, shopping mall, Football stadium, and other nooks and crannies. And once completed, an entire squad of F-22s fire bombed the empty cityscape, creating a post-apocalyptic wasteland. And that wasteland will be where the fight today will take place.

Tom: And considering the weaponry both combatants wield, there probably won't be anything left after.

Bill: Indeed. Well, let's have a look at the stands. Over there we see members of the Avengers, the Superhero team that Iron Man belongs to. Katie seems to be down there with them. Katie?

Katie: Thanks, Bill. I'm here with the Avengers. Most notably, Captain America. Captain, what are your thoughts on the match?

Captain America: Iron Man and I have had our differences, Ma'am. And with those came some... skirmishes. He's a good fighter with a frightening ordinance. That being said, I have never really even heard of Samus. And she looks pretty impressive too. If you see this tape, Tony, don't go easy on her just because she's a lady.

Katie: Thanks, Captain. Bill, here I have someone affiliated with Samus Aran. None other than the world's most recognized character, Super Mario himself.

Mario: Hello.

Katie: Mr.... Uh... Mario?

Mario: Just-ah Mario will be fine.

Katie: Mario. Thoughts on the match up today?

Mario: I-ah know what some will be thinking. Samus has a notable disadvantage- Iron Man can-ah fly. And while that's-ah true. I have seen Samus in-ah combat. Her targeting can- and-ah has- allowed her to take down enemies far above her-ah head. Samus has-ah my vote in this match up.

Katie: Thanks! Tom, Bill, back to you.

Tom: Thank you, Katie. As usual, with every match in The Dome, we have a buffet/cocktail party the night before the match. Last night was no exception. Although, the match almost started early with a slight altercation between Tony Stark and Samus Aran. And, let me say, if that was any preview of our match today we're in for a wild ride.

Bill: I'll say. It began innocently enough, with Tony Stark approaching a blonde attractive woman in a sky blue dress. Only, this was no ordinary woman. This was SAMUS!

Tom: That's right, Bill. And the CEO of Stark Industries was quite flustered. The discussion started first with friendly banter about both their skills and the upcoming match. But, Stark took it too far. Rob-64, a colleague of Samus, caught the altercation on tape, and here it is.

VIDEO CLIP-

(Conversation between Stark and Aran)

Stark: (Laughing) Sounds like a good fight! Tell me, This... Kraid was it?... How big was he?

Samus (No suit. Just a loose fitting sky blue dress): (Smiling, obviously good natured) Large enough, believe me. He gave me quite the run.

Stark: Really? And what weapon did you use?

Samus: Nice try. I'm not giving you any opportunity to nullify what my suit is capable of BEFORE we fight. (Smiles)

Stark: Suit yourself, sweetheart. Just playing fair.

Samus: Fair?

Stark: Well, The advantage leans my way Ms. Aran.

Samus: Flight won't get you any...

Stark: Not talking about flight, dear. (Laughs and looks at Rhodey)

Samus: (Laughs menacingly) Oh.... I get it.

Stark: Huh?

Samus: You chauvenists are all the same. Assuming that a woman can't handle herself on the battlefield...

Stark: (Noticeably flustered) No no no... Uh... All I meant was...

Samus: No, no! (Pushes Zelda's hand off of her) I understand. Believe me, this lowly woman meet your standards, sir. I am the most feared Bounty Hunter in the galaxy. Perhaps you'd like a go now? No suits. Let's do this...

Stark: Hold on. Hold on!

Samus: (Held back by Link and Falco Lombardi) C'Mon. Prove your worth little man.

Falco: Save it for the game. Save it for the game.

Stark: (Backing up, but looking ready to defend h

345. Huge Cotton Candy

345. Huge Cotton Candy

Look at those huge cotton candies!!! This was taken from about 400 miles east of tokyo, about 50 minutes from landing. Not that you need to know.

This time, I took Northwest instead of my usual Singapore Airlines. The reason was, Northwest was about $200 cheaper than Singapore on the day I wanted to leave (because of the season), so I picked Northwest but usually Singapore is really cheap, too.
BUT SERIOUSLY! Northwest STUNK!!!! I definitely do NOT recommend it. Okay, below is my review. FYI, I was in the economy class, the cheapest of 3 classes (first, buisiness, economy).

The flight attendants are ugly (okay, maybe not "ugly" but not as attractive as those of other airlines like Singapore) and their attitude was just not that great. I should say they weren't as thoughtful as they should be.
Northwest's aircraft also was something they should do something about. It looked like it was the same one they used from when I was 5 years old. No individual TV screens and the windows were not cleaned adequately.

Singapore on the other hand is just awesome every time with its service. No complaints at all. I totally recommend Singapore because it's cheap and great!

Man, the flight this time was the longest 11 hours I experienced in a long time. I'm going to stick with Singapore from now on and not going to take Northwest for a while.

Northwest Angle: A Novel

With his family caught in the crosshairs of a group of brutal killers, detective Cork O’Connor must solve the murder of a young girl in the latest installment of William Kent Krueger’s unforgettable New York Times bestselling series.
During a houseboat vacation on the remote Lake of the Woods, a violent gale sweeps through unexpectedly, stranding Cork and his daughter, Jenny, on a devastated island where the wind has ushered in a force far darker and more deadly than any storm.
Amid the wreckage, Cork and Jenny discover an old trapper’s cabin where they find the body of a teenage girl. She wasn’t killed by the storm, however; she’d been bound and tortured before she died.
Whimpering sounds coming from outside the cabin lead them to a tangle of branches toppled by the vicious winds. Underneath the debris, they find a baby boy, hungry and dehydrated, but still very much alive. Powerful forces intent on securing the child pursue them to the isolated Northwest Angle, where it’s impossible to tell who among the residents is in league with the devil. Cork understands that to save his family he must solve the puzzle of this mysterious child whom death follows like a shadow.

Amazon Exclusive: Laura Lippman Interviews William Kent Krueger

Laura Lippman is the award-winning, New York Times bestselling author of 17 novels, ten of which are part of her acclaimed Tess Monaghan detective series. She is a former journalist and spent twelve years reporting for The Baltimore Sun. Her most recent novels include I'd Know You Anywhere, now available in paperback, and The Most Dangerous Thing, just published in hardcover.

Laura Lippman: Elmore Leonard's rules for writing include one that I've never agreed with: Never start a novel with the weather. Yet you use the derecho quite brilliantly in your opening and say you "always knew" that you would write about such a storm in one of your novels. Why now? How did the derecho and the right story find each other?
William Kent Krueger: The seed of an idea often comes to me long before the story itself. In 1999, a horrific storm destroyed a huge part of Minnesota's beautiful and beloved Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. When I saw the destruction first-hand, I was stunned and saddened, and I knew that someday I would write about that kind of tragedy. In thinking about Northwest Angle, a book I envisioned as thrilleresque in many ways, I wanted the story to open with the force of a bomb exploding, something that would shatter the O'Connor family and fling them apart. The derecho, an idea planted more than a decade earlier, became the way.
LL: You write so well about nature. I can't help wondering at the special challenges that it poses. And you seem particularly interested in humans' conflicting needs for community and isolation, family and privacy. How did you combine these themes in Northwest Angle?
WK: Oh my, you do ask complex questions. For me, the most intriguing part of any story is the battle between the need we have as human beings for relationship and the forces that inevitably work to separate us. At the heart of Northwest Angle, is the struggle of the O'Connors to come together and heal after a great tragedy in their lives. But that very personal story is couched within the context of a brutal, ideological clash of communities. It seems to me stories of suspense work best when they create conflict at both an intimate level and on a larger scale. It’s also more fun to write that kind of story, at least for me. Your own novels, particularly your stand-alones, seem to me to be textbook examples of the dramatic tension that comes when the secrets of our private, intimate lives are cracked open for public scrutiny.
LL: It's easy to see how Cork has changed over the course of eleven books. But how have you changed as a writer? And how have the circumstances of your life changed your writing?
WK: Mostly I've grown older and, I would like to believe, wiser. Like Cork, I've become a grandfather, and that's mellowed me, I'm sure. Although my stories are still about the violence that human beings do to one another, I'm less interested in the violence itself. These days, I tend to deal more with the questions that surround an act of violence rather than the act per se. And generally speaking, the body count in each book has gone down.

LL: Northwest Angle works pretty seamlessly on the page, but my intuition tells me that means it wasn't an easy book to write. What were the unique challenges, if any, in writing this particular book? Did you ever feel you were as lost as Cork and Jenny? (Please say yes, or I might have to hate you a little.)
WK: At the risk of drawing your ire, the part of the story that deals with Cork and Jenny's struggle to escape the dark forces pitted against them came easily. That was all mostly movement and plot mechanics. The conflict between father and daughter that gives the story much of its punch, now that was the tricky element. And if you hate me just a little for this answer, I'll buy you a glass of wine when I see you next, just to mellow you out.
LL: I know a lot of people don't realize that genre writers are often deep into the next project when a new book is published. What's next for you?
WK: I'm at work on the next book in the series, a novel tentatively titled Trickster's Point. The down and dirty is that the first Native American governor of Minnesota is murdered while bow hunting with Cork O'Connor, and the arrow that kills him belongs to Cork. So you know, of course, who gets the blame. You might think of it as Cork O'Connor meets All the King's Men. I’m having a ball writing this one.
LL: OK, I have a famously awful memory, but my memory is that you won the Anthony for best first novel in 1999 and promptly declared something like "I'm so excited I could throw up." Am I even close? Should I not tell that story?
WK: If I'd actually said I might throw up, this would not be a story I'd like repeated. What I really said in accepting the award was this: "Would it be too embarrassing if I broke down and cried?" Got a good laugh, though I was half serious.

Amazon Exclusive: Letter from William Kent Krueger

A couple of years ago, when Atria informed me that they were going to begin publishing my work in trade paperback with a whole new look to the series, I decided it was time to do something I'd never done before: I reread all my Cork O'Connor novels. I anticipated that in the early work I would see lots of elements that, given a chance, I'd gladly change. To my utter amazement, I fell in love with the stories all over again. What I discovered was a writer whose work I deeply enjoyed reading. And, honestly, I didn't think twice about changes I might like to make. Maybe what I appreciated most was seeing for myself how, though built of similar elements, each book was so different from the others. What I've hoped most to accomplish over the course of the series is to keep readers from feeling as if they're treading ground that’s become drably familiar. I believe absolutely that so long as I continue to be surprised and delighted by the stories that come to me, readers will be, too.

Profile of Cork O'Connor

The great North Woods of Minnesota is a vast area of harsh weather, deep wilderness, and bitter conflict. This rugged and isolated landscape is home to Cork O'Connor. The former sheriff of Tamarack County, Cork is a man of tremendous resource and mixed heritage. Part Irish-American and part Ojibwe, he straddles two cultures that, more often than not, are at extreme—sometimes violent—odds. He’s a family man who’d rather toss a football with his son than tote a gun; but he understands only too well that he lives in a place where winter isn't the only thing that can kill the unwary, where wolves share the woods with predators who walk on two legs, and where, in order to protect those he loves, even a good man must be willing to do the unthinkable.
For more on the Cork O'Connor series, read Margaret Coel's guest review of Vermilion Drift.

GDMS: in which I write a book

GDMS: in which I write a book

I am SO bad at taking pictures of myself... so here's one from a month or so ago when there was actual daylight when I arrived home from work.

Which holidays do you celebrate, if any?
Thanksgiving, Christmas & New Year. Thanksgiving is with family, Christmas is often spent on a plane or at an airport, as my husband and I travel at this time of year. It’s not so bad – the flight attendants get extra pay to work on the holiday, so everyone is cheerful and the booze flows freely. New Years is spent with the friends with whom we
travel – we love celebrating the New Year in a different culture! My birthday falls halfway between Thanksgiving and New Years, too, so there is some celebration there as well.

What is your favorite holiday tradition?
I grew up with candlelit Christmas Eve and/or Lessons & Carols services, and the singing of Silent Night with the whole church bathed in candlelight is my favorite moment. Eating is a close second, followed by napping after eating. Also, watching holiday-y movies (the more classic the better).

For New Year's, are you a party animal or quiet night at home type?
By nature I’m a homebody, but have spent every new year’s since 2005 in a different country. We try to find the best party we can wherever we are!

What drives you banana hammocks about the holidays? Tempting foods? Relatives? Shopping?
What stinks for me is that my job is its busiest in the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas (and I thought leaving academia would put a stop to that!). I rarely feel like I have time to actually enjoy the season, go to holiday parties, celebrate my birthday, or truly get into the holiday spirit (whatever that means) doing things I love, like baking
and decorating. I also don’t like living so far from my family that I don’t get to spend time with them, although I’m sure if we lived closer I’d be complaining that they drive me nuts.

What's your "comfort" when getting "through" the holiday season? Crafting? Eating? Drinking? :o)
Crafting is my comfort all year round – finding some time to knit and relax is the key to my sanity! If I had time, I would bake my grocery store out of flour and sugar.

Holiday foods you like
Pffeffernusse! Mulled wine/cider, glug, gingerbread (ginger anything, really). Cranberries. Peppermint. Spiced anything (cloves, cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg)... If it evokes warm and cozy (and possibly the haze of a lovely alcohol buzz), I’m all about it. I also like good coffee (not flavored) and loose leaf tea.

Holiday foods you despise
Fruitcake. I don’t mind nuts, but don’t like nuts in things, like chocolate.

Foods you can't eat (allergies, etc.)
I’m not allergic to anything, but have a few do.not.likes: olives, grapefruit, celery & parsley. Not that you’d be sending the last three, but I have had fancy olives given as gifts before, to my chagrin.

Favorite yarn(s)?
I love Madelinetosh, Blue Sky Alpaca, Lornas Laces...would love to try some Quince & Co. Wool, wool, wool. Oh, and cashmere (duh). My sock yarn drawer overfloweth, but could always make room for more. I don’t often knit with laceweight – fingering is the lightest weight I prefer, although I am an equal opportunity knitter otherwise. Except for
cotton, which I avoid like the plague.

Crafty pursuits - knit, crochet, spin, sew, quilt, any of these or others?
I’m a knitter first & foremost, but have taken the plunge into quilting this year. I can crochet a granny square, but that’s about it. I have begun to amass a fabric stash...it doesn’t yet rival the yarn stash, but given a little time I think it will catch up.

Hobbies/pursuits/proclivities/passions (other than the aforementioned crafty ones, obviously)
Reading – I’ve always got an audiobook going on my commute to/from work, at lunch while knitting, etc. Travel is another major hobby – this year I’ve been in Belize, Aruba and Colombia. Our trip over the holidays will take in Hong Kong, Vietnam & Cambodia. I love nothing more than to hang out at a GOOD coffee spot, knit and chill with friends.
That doesn’t happen often enough, though! I want to be a better photographer, but have to wait on that until I can actually invest in equipment. This year I also started canning/preserving – I love it!

What do you do in life? (job, career, school, family, etc.)
I am the Professional Development Coordinator for a large law firm in DC. Basically, I do training & development and run around after attorneys making sure they pay their bar dues and stay current with their CLE requirements. Fun times! My husband and I live in the Watergate building in Washington DC (yes, that Watergate) and love exploring
restaurants for good eats. I am currently working on wearing him down to the point where he’ll cave and let me get a cat. I expect success in 5 – 10 years.

Random favorites -- books, movies, tv, genres, ice cream flavors, time of day, etc.
By training I am a medievalist. I miss using that part of me on a regular

Cloud Layer

Cloud Layer

This cloud layer played some havoc on the balloon flights this day.

In my opinion, this is the most difficult time of year to fly balloons in our Del Mar area. We are still having spring-like weather which has elements of winter like weather, fast winds, clouds and other difficult conditions. So until about the beginning of July we have to put up with some difficult flying conditions.

On Saturday night we all had a difficult flight in that it took a good hour and 15 or more minutes to work the balloons to a good landing area. And we had to all get very high, like 6,000+ to find the best winds. So on Sunday I think a lot of the pilots were tired of all the difficult conditions.

It seemed that most of the pilots were dragging their feet and not too eager to fly. I can understand, again conditions were spring-like; not the lazy days of summer where you just close your eyes, go up for an hour, then open your eyes and land. In summer there is so little work involved in navigating to a good spot. But we are not quite into summer yet. And navigation lately has been VERY challenging. So we were facing a flight where their would be a LOT of work (stress, worry) involved for the pilots.

Well, I for one was convinced it was a perfect day to fly. The wind currents were satisfactory, my only concern was getting stuck underneath one of the many big puffy clouds that were passing by. So when I saw what looked like an opportunity to climb high above the clouds, because a large clear area was moving above us, I went for it. I started my inflation a few minutes early to take advantage of the clear sky at the time.

So I took off with 10 passengers and climbed quickly above the cloud layer (at 2,000 ft.) finding more favorable wind currents at 4,000 to 7,000 feet.

But then, a very large flat cloud moved over the launch area. (Not a surprise). So none of the other pilots got off the ground!! I could not believe that once again I was the only pilot in the air! I almost couldn't believe the other several balloons did not launch! They just packed up and went home while we were enjoying a fantastic flight.

As you can imagine, a little animosity might arise among pilots on the ground, feeling a little jealous that we were in the air. And also, they have to explain to their passengers, why they are canceling the flight yet another balloon just launched from a different company, AND the day is looking VERY beautiful, not an obviously stormy day. So the passengers are wondering why is one balloon flying along nicely up there, but the other balloon companies are canceling their flight.

So it can be little hard for the other pilots and crew and passengers to go home and walk away from all that money now lost.

No one would ever criticize the pilots who choose not to fly for safety reasons. But it is too easy for them to try to criticize me for being the only one to fly. So basically it is the same old office politics and company competitiveness over market share and finger pointing at the competition.

For example, one pilot named James, blatantly violated FAA rules just 3 weeks ago by intentionally flying through the clouds again and again. And then he has the nerve to try to say I was flying dangerously near the clouds!

So do you get the picture? Not only do good balloon pilots have to deal with the difficult weather conditions, they have to deal with lowly thinking competitors who instigate trouble for the entire industry.

I've always said, that all the local balloon pilots and companies should work hard to cooperate because in the long run that will be the best strategy against the outside forces of landowners like the City of San Diego and Pardee Home construcion company who develops the land in our area.

So if you read down this far, thank you for listening to my ranting and raving and complaints about people like James who are 'off their rocker'.

I enjoyed a fantastic flight Saturday and Sunday, and so did my passengers. If some of the other balloon companies don't like the fact that we are successful, In large part because I have more experience and local knowledge, well, too bad for them. ok ok, that is not such a nice attitude. . .

James, lighten up would you? We live in hot air balloon paradise! We get to do afternoon / evening flights next to the ocean. We dont' have to get up at 3:00 in the morning like 95% of the other balloons in the world. We are surrounded by a city were people all have money to go for balloon rides and there is an steady and endless supply of tourists and visitors looking for something fun to do. There is enough permanent open space so that we could fly here for ever, but if the balloon companies don't cooperate because of greed and worry about market share, we will ruin it for ourselves.

Ok, so once again, for the flickr people who read down this far. You can see that I am using this in Blog style by communicating with the people in my hot air balloon industry.

pigeon

pigeon

Pigeon racing is a sport involving the release of specially trained racing pigeons, which then return to their homes over a carefully measured distance. The time it takes the animal to cover the specified distance is measured and the animals' rate of travel is calculated and compared with all of the other pigeons in the race to determine which animal returned at the highest rate of speed.

The winner of a pigeon race is the bird with the highest velocity, that is, the distance flown divided by the time taken. Races can often be won and lost in seconds, and to counter this, many different timing apparatus have been developed. The traditional timing method involves rubber rings being placed into a specially designed clock, whereas a newer development uses RFID tags to record arrival time.

While there is not definite proof, there are compelling reasons to think the sport of racing pigeons may go back as least as far as 220 AD or possibly earlier[1]. The sport achieved a great deal of popularity in Belgium in the mid 19th century. The pigeon fanciers of Belgium were so taken with the hobby that they began to develop pigeons specially cultivated for fast flight and long endurance called Voyageurs[2]. From Belgium the modern version of the sport and the Voyageurs which the Flemish fanciers developed spread to most parts of the world. Once quite popular, the sport has experienced a downturn in participants in recent years, possibly due to the rising cost of living and aging fanciers.

One recent development in the sport of pigeon racing is "one loft racing", where birds are raced against each other under the same training regime, in an effort to test the best birds rather than the best trainer.

The 2011 Economic and Product Market Databook for Monrovia, Liberia

The 2011 Economic and Product Market Databook for Monrovia, Liberia

In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have occasionally been asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services in Liberia. The purpose of this study is to understand the density of demand within Liberia and the extent to which Monrovia might be used as a point of distribution within Africa. From an economic perspective, however, Monrovia does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries, rather, it represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another.

In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for Monrovia over the next five years for hundreds of industries, categories and products. The goal of this report is to report the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by Monrovia when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in Monrovia used by the space industry to launch satellites. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by the area served by Monrovia. Without Monrovia, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the population in Liberia, Africa, or the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both Africa and Monrovia.

Stranded Liberian refugees return home from Cote d'Ivoire

MONROVIA, Liberia, May 27 (UNHCR) – More than 200 Liberian refugees have ended months of ordeal in strife-torn Cote d'Ivoire by returning home as the UN refugee agency resumed airlifts to Liberia this week.

They were among hundreds of Liberian refugees who had moved into the UNHCR office compound in Abidjan in December following the outbreak of post-election violence in Cote d'Ivoire. The refugees had previously been well integrated in their host country but were targeted in recent months amid allegations that Liberian mercenaries were fighting for former president Laurent Gbagbo in the west.

Earlier this year, as the fighting intensified across Abidjan, the refugees asked UNHCR to repatriate them to Liberia. One group was flown home in March before growing insecurity forced the operation to be suspended temporarily.

Margaret, 26, said her husband "ran away to Ghana" when people came looking for Liberian men. She recalled her experience at the overcrowded Abidjan compound: "As a pregnant woman, it was very hard for me during the fighting in Abidjan. Bullets were flying all over the place and we were sleeping outside the UN office. Bullets hit two people where I was. I even fell down. There was no food, no water, nothing. It was also very dangerous to access medical services."

With calm slowly returning in Cote d'Ivoire, UNHCR resumed the air repatriation earlier this week. Margaret, who had given birth two weeks ago, was on one of those flights. "It was not easy but by the grace of God I am now home," she said after arriving at Roberts International Airport near the Liberian capital, Monrovia, where the returnees were screened by security and immigration staff.

So far this year, UNHCR has helped a total of 434 Liberian refugees to go home from Abidjan. Most of this week's returnees have been in exile for nearly 20 years. Several were born in exile and are more fluent in French than English, Liberia's official language. UNHCR provided them with voluntary repatriation grants, including transportation allowances to go to their final destinations.

One of the younger returnees also received a surprise homecoming present. Soon after landing at Roberts International Airport, 16-year-old Mekape Tonan was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she gave birth to a baby boy. UNHCR is helping them as well as Tonan's mother and siblings by covering the medical bills, accommodation and providing a modest subsistence allowance before they return to their village in Nimba county in eastern Liberia.

Since 2004, UNHCR has helped more than 170,000 Liberian refugees to return home from the region. The agency has been supporting Liberian returnee communities by rehabilitating schools, clinics and roads. It is also providing water and sanitation facilities and supporting income-generation projects across the country.

Meanwhile, back in Abidjan, there are still some refugees at UNHCR's office compound who have not yet made up their minds about repatriation. New groups have also approached the office to find out more about returning to Liberia.

Although the Liberian war ended in 2003, there are still some 24,000 Liberian refugees in Cote d'Ivoire, mainly living in the western and south-western cities of Tabou and Guiglo.

Another aid airlift arrives in Liberia as flow of Ivorian refugees continues

MONROVIA, Liberia, February 14 (UNHCR) – As a UNHCR-chartered aircraft carrying 100 tonnes of emergency shelter aid landed in the Liberian capital of Monrovia on Monday morning, the number of refugees to arrive in the country from Cote d'Ivoire in recent weeks passed the 36,300 mark.

The Boeing 747 flight – the third organized by UNHCR to Liberia – landed at Roberts International Airport with a cargo of 15,000 plastic sheets, more than 400 rolls of plastic sheeting and 400 lightweight family tents. Many of the items were sent immediately to north-east Liberia's Nimba County, where UNHCR is helping to set up a camp for up to 15,000 refugees.

"Seven trucks carrying the stocks are expected to reach Nimba County today," said UNHCR Supply Officer Yohannes Hailu Gebre-Mariam. "The tents and plastic sheeting will then be used to construct temporary shelters and for the bathing and sanitation areas in the camp."

To date, the 36,318 refugees registered with UNHCR have been staying in 76 villages in the country. The registration process is continuing with UNHCR staff estimating that up to 100 people are crossing every day from western areas of Cote d'Ivoire. Tension has been mounting since the presidential election of last November, with the rival candidates both claiming victory.

Many of those fleeing into Liberia are avoiding the main crossing points and using small trails or going by boat along canals and other waterways connecting the two countries.

UNHCR and the Liberian government hope in the next few days to start moving some 15,000 of the refugees into the camp being built at Bahn. They have also identified 15 villages that have agreed to shelter the remaining refugees, who would be moved from the areas where they are currently staying.

Both the camp and the villages are located more than 20 kilometres from the border with Cote d'Ivoire. UNHCR is working closely with the government and other agencies to ensure that essential facilities and services, such as food, water, shelter, sanitation, education and health care, are available in both the camp and the relocation villages.

Last Saturday, UNHCR launched a campaign to inform the Cote d'Ivoire refugees about the options available to them. "Through the campaign, we hope to help the refugees make a fully informed decision about whether to move to the camp, the relocation villages or to remain at the border," said Raouf Mazou, a deputy director of UNHCR's Africa Bureau. "We hope to start moving people into the camps and relocation villages this weekend," he added.

Meanwhile, because of the difficult terrain and lack of infrastructure, humanitarian agencies are struggling to reach all the refugees in good time. So far UNHCR has distributed basic household items such as blankets, plastic mats, jerry cans and kitchen sets, along with food rations for up to 20,000 refugees in villages along the border. Distributions will continue once the refugees have been moved.

Redemption Road: The Quest for Peace and Justice in Liberia (A Novel)

Set in Monrovia during the administration of Liberia's former president, Charles Taylor, this riveting debut is a story of recovery, atonement, and the continuing quest for peace and justice in a nation plagued by conflict and inequalities since its founding by free blacks and former American slaves. Life in war-torn Liberia is not easy, and it is especially challenging for Bendu Lewis, a young woman who counsels traumatized survivors of Liberia's civil war while struggling silently with memories of her own war-time experiences. When the warlord who once held her in captivity suddenly appears in town, she decides that for her own healing, and for the voiceless victims of the war, she must bring him to justice for his past atrocities. In her pursuit of Commander Cobra, Bendu finds much more than she bargained for, including the courage to finally confront and make amends for her own painful war-time secret. Written with compassion, honesty and clarity, Elma Shaw's Redemption Road helps us to finally begin to make sense of what has often been termed a 'senseless' war. Hers is a new but mature voice that shows remarkable insight into both the causes of Liberia's civil war, and the cure for healing the wounds and averting further conflict.

Sunrise In Mexico

Sunrise In Mexico

Have you ever had one of those shots where you just pointed your camera, not even looking through the viewfinder and just clicked? Well this is one of those shots. It was the last photo I took on my trip to Mexico over the summer. My girlfriend and I were sitting on our porch drinking coffee on the morning of our flight home, depressed that our vacation was over. I had my 35mm prime lens on and just snapped this as we were chatting. It might have made a cool HDR had I planned it that way, but I think this came out really awesome without it.

Welcome to:
Something like elation when you first open your eyes
Just cuz it means
That you musta finally got to sleep last night
Welcome to:
The precipice between groundlessness and flight

It’s quiet here except for this song
Now that everybody’s gone
But hey
Least you don’t have to play along today

Besides which
Welcome to:
Taking the good stuff down off of the shelf
And welcome to:
The art of conversation with yourself
Welcome to:
Humming an unbroken tune
All day long

Heaven is for Real: A Little Boy's Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back, Deluxe Edition

Heaven is for Real: A Little Boy's Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back, Deluxe Edition

Deluxe, keepsake edition of the best-selling book and true story of a young boy's visit to heaven after life-saving surgery.
Heaven Is for Real is the true story of the four-year old son of a small town Nebraska pastor who during emergency surgery slips from consciousness and enters heaven. He survives and begins talking about being able to look down and see the doctor operating and his dad praying in the waiting room. The family didn't know what to believe but soon the evidence was clear.
Colton said he met his miscarried sister whom no one had told him about, and his great grandfather who died 30 years before Colton was born, then shared impossible-to-know details about each. He describes the horse that only Jesus could ride, about how "reaaally big" God and his chair are, and how the Holy Spirit "shoots down power" from heaven to help us.
Told by the father but often in Colton's own words, the disarmingly simple message is heaven is a real place, Jesus really loves children, and be ready there is a coming last battle.

The following text, in english, is from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
The Yellow-headed Caracara, Milvago chimachima, is a bird of prey in the family Falconidae. It is found in tropical and subtropical South America and the southern portion of Central America. Unlike the Falco falcons in the same family, the caracaras are not fast-flying aerial hunters, but are rather sluggish and often scavengers.
The Yellow-headed Caracara is 41–46 cm (16–18 in) cm long and weighs 325 g (11.5 oz) on average. The female is larger than the male, weighing 310–360 g (11–13 oz), against his 280–330 g (9.9–12 oz). It is broad-winged and long-tailed, somewhat resembling a small Buteo. The adult has a buff head, with a black streak behind the eye, and buff underparts. The upperparts are brown with distinctive pale patches on the flight feathers of the wings, and the tail is barred cream and brown.
The sexes are similar, but the head and underparts of immature birds have dense brown mottling. The voice of this species is a characteristic screamed schreee.
This is a bird of savannah, swamps and forest edges. The Yellow-headed Caracara is a resident bird from Costa Rica south through Trinidad and Tobago to northern Argentina (the provinces of Misiones, Chaco, Formosa, Corrientes and Santa Fe). It is typically found from sea level to 1,800 m (5,900 ft), occasionally to 2,600 m (8,500 ft) ASL. In southern South America, it is replaced by a close relative, the Chimango Caracara (Milvago chimango), whose range overlaps with that of the Yellow-headed Caracara in southern Brazil, northern Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. A larger and stouter paleosubspecies, Milvago chimachima readei, occurred in Florida and possibly elsewhere during the Late Pleistocene, some tens of thousand years ago.[1] According to the Peregrine Fund database, the Yellow-headed Caracara is expanding its range into Nicaragua.[2]
The Yellow-headed Caracara is omnivorous, and will eat reptiles, amphibians and other small animals as well as carrion. Birds are rarely if ever taken, and this species will not elicit warning calls from mixed-species feeding flocks that cross its path even in open cerrado habitat .[3] It will also take ticks from cattle, and is locally called "tickbird". In addition, at least younger birds are fond of certain fruits, such as those of the Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) and Pequi (Caryocar brasiliense).[4] It lays from five to seven brown-marked buff eggs in a stick nest in a tree.[5]
The Yellow-headed Caracara has benefited from forest clearing for cattle ranching. Its status in Trinidad has changed

San Juan Poriahu is an old estancia located on the Ibera Marshlands, a vast extension of virtually untouched wilderness combined with the colorful land of the gauchos. It has thirty-two thousand acres used primarily for livestock. Almost half of the land is covered by marshes, and the vast wetlands of the Ibera Lagoon begin on its eastern border. On its varied landscape, which ranges from marshes to long, low hills, live carpinchos (large rodents), yacares (alligators), swamp deer, monkeys, nandues (ostriches) and the nearly extinct aguara-guazu (hairy wolf). More than two hundred species of birds have been recorded, including the jabiru, the largest stork in the Americas.
The main buildings are built on the crest of a low hill surrounded by woods of native trees and plants: lapachos, ibira-puita, gomeros (rubber plants), and ombu trees. A settlement of low houses of simple design, well adapted to the region, the three-hundred-year-old house was a former Jesuit chapel. It has small windows, and its thatched roof offers protection from the intense summer heat.
In the seventeenth century San Juan Poriahu was part of the vast circle of estancias of the Society of Jesus. The terrain was particularly well suited for raising cattle: it had fresh water and its fertile pastures formed a sort of island between the marshes that was easy to defend. Part of the old Camino Real, which connected distant parts of the colony, is preserved on the estancia. General Belgrano passed along this road on his way to Paraguay after the May Revolution of 1810 which led to the independence of Argentina from Spain in 1816.
After the Jesuits were expelled in 1769, the lands belonged to a local Spanish pioneer, Don Pedro de Igarzabal, and later to an old family from Corrientes, the Fernandez Blanco. In 1890 Angel Fernandez Blanco died heirless and bequeathed the property to a friend, Ernesto Meabe, a cattleman and distinguished public figure in the province. Meabe bought two contiguous estancias and joined the three properties together, calling the new one San Juan Poriahu-which in Guarani Indian language means Poor San Juan-because the estancia originally had no livestock. Meabe pioneered Shorthorn cattle breeding in Corrientes and brought the first shorthorn to the estancia in wagons from Buenos Aires. His son Raimundo, one of eight children, inherited both San Juan Poriahu and Santa Ana, a neighboring estancia. An active politician, he was also a progressive, successful cattleman. His daughter Ana Maria now owns the estate.
The Corrientes estancias, including San Juan Poriahu, have changed little over the years. The persistence of tradition is apparent in the ranch-hands' attire, which is so well suited to the environment that updating it has been unnecessary. The gauchos still wear the typical bombacha (baggy trousers) and a wide belt; their leggings are made of canvas because they often work in water and the climate is extremely humid. A deer or carpincho hide is folded over their belts and unrolled when they work on foot to protect against rope burns and kicks from the animals. Gauchos from this province also wear a kerchief around the neck in a color that indicates their political sympathies.

Location: Mesopotamia, the north-east region, in the Ibera Marshlands, Province of Corrientes.
The Region: The Ibera marshlands ("Ibera" means Brilliant Waters) are the habitat of the most amazing wildlife in Argentina, formed by a vast extension of wetlands, lagoons and lesser pools, located in the Corrientes Province in the Mesopotamia region of north-east Argentina. An infinite variety of trees, aquatic vegetation as the beautiful "irupe" flower, endangered species as the marsh deer, capybaras (carpinchos), bountiful fish and amazing birds, storks, duck, herons, sea-gulls, flamingos inhabit this magical scenery. It is a subtropical paradise and one of the most spectacular ecosystems in the continent. Watching the colorful 'gauchos", the land of the "chamame", rhythm derived from the polka played by the Guarani Indians first on their flutes and later on with accordions after the arrival of the Europeans and savoring the "mate" in its country of origin, the typical infusion sipped from a gourd with a silver straw called "bombilla", are all part of an exciting sojourn in this intriguing setting. This destination is ideal to combine with a short side-trip to the wondruous Iguazu Falls, the untamed rain forests of the Iguazu National Park, the fantastic San Ignacio Jesuit ruins and precious stone mines that lie at close distance.
Distance from Buenos Aires: 800 miles
How to get there: To reach San Juan de Poriahu one must fly from Buenos Aires either to Corrientes or Posadas cities (one hour and a half daily flights) on Aerolineas Argentinas or Austral Airlines.
Accommodations: 5 double-bedrooms with private bathroom (three en-suite and two with external bathrooms).
Activities: can

The honor is all mine- to be the daughter of one of these men.

The honor is all mine- to be the daughter of one of these men.

It is 12:08am Thursday April 16, 2009. I have just arrived home from dropping my parents off at their home. We had been at the airport. My father went on the Honor Flight/Quad Cities today, he traveled to Washington DC as a guest of the Honor Flight organization. The Patriot Guard, the Marine Moms and I don't know what other organizations were at the airport forming two long lines of flags. The entire waiting area was packed with people who were there to welcome home the veterans from World War II. A 14 month old baby in a fleecy sleeper giggling as she tried to gum the wooden dowel that her miniature flag was stapled to. A young mother corralling her 4 year old son, 6 & 8 year old daughters- all dressed in red, white and blue. A blue-eyed blond 16 year old lounging on the floor of the gift shop propped up against the magazine rack engrossed in a fishing magazine. A 22 year old college student with sore muscles in her arm, hand & fingers after writing a 3 hour final. A 55 year old woman carrying a fluff ball of a Pomeranian named Princess Puff--in the airport--who'd of thunk? Proud wives of "Guardians" with their cameras around their necks. News reporters with their little pads of paper in such contrast to the TV news people in their spike heels and suits being trailed by long black cords and lit up by white bright spot lights. The numerous volunteers wending their way through the masses handing out free parking passes, flags and bottles of water. Airport personnel dragging carts of even more chairs, looking for places to squeeze in a few more. Many 80- 90 year old women looking fatigued at 10:45pm, most had other family members with them, but there were several that captured my attention: standing alone holding the little "old glory" and a handbag, waiting patiently, watching down the long flag lined corridor for a sign of their returning soldier.......looking into the faces of these lone women, I could imagine them standing at an airport or train station years ago, waiting for these same servicemen to come home. I wondered if they had a sense of deja vu or was the romantic in me taking over? I was totally flabbergasted at the size of the crowd. I had to park in Coal Valley---well, not quite, but almost! All of these people, everyone with their own story to tell. I met a woman waiting for her husband who had been assigned to Pearl Harbor to replace the deceased Intel & Com after the attack. Another whose husband had been at Iwo Jima. A niece was waiting for her dying uncle who made the trip to D.C. today, but years ago landed on Normandy Beach. A pilot who had a crowd of people bearing flags bigger than most and wearing badges with photos of him "now" and "then" and that said things like: "you are my hero", "thank you Honor Flight QC", "God Bless the USA", "Always Remember". Behind all of the noise of the conversations I could hear strains of patriotic songs and had to waddle dance to "for a duck may be somebody's mother" and march around to "mine eyes have seen the glory" Finally at 11 o'clock there was much applause, we peered down the people lined aisle and saw the flashing light of an airport cart bringing out the first of the vets, cameras flashed, hands were shook, tears were wiped, hugs were given, but what I found to be the most pronounced and notable happening was what I could hear the crowd saying to these men; strangers with paunch bellies, gray hair, wizened, craggy faces with bright eyes. Some were staggering a bit after such a long day, some were riding in the carts or wheelchairs- all had their shoulders back and their heads held high as they shook hands with the throng and the throng said continually....thank you, thank you very much, you are so appreciated, oh how I thank you, God Bless you, and every single variation of thanks........to these total strangers...........these old men......these brave, courageous Americans......the Greatest Generation...........wow..........let us never forget our gratitude to these men who we are losing at a rate of 800 a day. It is because of them that we live the lives we live....let us always remember.
There were so many on this Honor Flight and a few will be featured or mentioned by some form of media, but how wonderful it would be if we could hear the story of each and every one of them. While awaiting their arrival I was caught up in the stories of the crowd, but it is the stories of these heroes that I long to hear. I wish these men wore the special yellow shirts that identify them as Honor Flight participants every day. I am sure that I rush past these men everyday- in the market or the drug store, these men who deserve my thanks, these men who pressed their frail hands into mine, these men who kissed my cheek and thanked ME for coming out to see them, these men who truly are the Greatest Generation.
If you know one of these men, please,

Flight from Eritrea

Flight from Eritrea

New arrivals from Eritrea in eastern Sudan at Shagerab reception center, where they now have to live in crowded tents and makeshift huts. Eritrean and Ethiopian refugees in Sudan have mostly enjoyed protection for the past four decades, but it has been extremely difficult for those living in the east and in Khartoum to support themselves, particularly when they lack ID. In eastern Sudan, the absence of durable solutions prospects makes refugees highly dependent on humanitarian assistance and some to risk the journey over Lybia and the Mediterranean Sea to arrive in Lampedusa. Conditions in refugee camps need to be improved. Possibilities for employment and economic opportunities need to be enhanced to reduce refugees’ dependence on external assistance. At the same time, improvements are required in the current asylum legislation to guarantee access to asylum and registration procedures and to eliminate restrictive practices.

The Eritreans, along with Ethiopians in Sudan represent one of the most protracted refugee situations in the world. UNHCR considers that the end of the Eritrean war of independence in 1991 and the end of the border conflict between Eritrea and Ethiopia in 2000 removed the root causes of the Eritrean refugee problem. However forced army recruitment and political instability continue to push Eritreans into flight. While many Eritrean refugees are expected to depart for resettlement in 2009, those newly arriving from Eritrea will be accommodated and assisted in the different camps. / UNHCR / R. Ek.

King James I of England and VI of Scotland, son of Mary, Queen of Scots

King James I of England and VI of Scotland, son of Mary, Queen of Scots

Philip Mould:

The portrait of King James of Scotland by Vanson is an important and revealing glimpse of the monarch before his accession to the throne of England and the consequent union of the crowns, and it provides perhaps the last suggestion of the private man before his transformation in the more majestic and iconic images painted after 1603. The diffident, hesitant character, combined with a hint of shrewdness, suggested by Vanson's portrait would seem from the record to be an honest reflection of that monarch's temperament, and a product of his experience.

When his mother Mary Stuart abdicated in July 1567 the new King was barely one year old. His minority was marked by the ceaseless plotting of competing noble factions, and the conflicting interests of pro-French and pro-English parties. As a result, James's principal aim was always to steer a middle course between the extremes that were presented to him. He tried to avoid taking sides with France or with England, and saw himself as a mediator between the violent and self-interested Scottish nobility and the political encroachments of the puritan clergy. In 1586 by the Treaty of Berwick he was forced at least to appear to favour the cause of England and Queen Elizabeth, and was had to accept the fact of his mother''s death sentence later in the year. Throughout his reign in both countries he remained true to his chosen motto beati pacifici ''Blessed are the peacemakers.''

In any case, he could afford to play a waiting game. The throne of England would be his eventually, despite Elizabeth's refusal to name him or anyone as her heir, and when he acceded he could then enjoy the wealth and liberty that had been lacking in Scotland. He was able to play a part on the world stage, and again through making peace with Spain in 1622 whilst also favouring his son-in-law the protestant Elector Palatine he imagined that he was Europe's mediator. His reputation was damaged by his celebrated dependency on and devotion to his favourites (although this was not unusual in the European courts of the early seventeenth century) and by the repugnance of his new subjects for the Spanish whom they had demonised for over half a century. His foreign policy fell apart with the beginning of the Thirty Years War, when the Elector's claimed the throne of Bohemia leading to renewed war with Spain. Yet it is worth noting that many of the tensions that were to lead to the Civil War in 1642 were already present in Jacobean England, and that the King - perhaps more prudent, certainly more cautious, than his son and reluctant to be seen to champion any party - stifled them to some degree.

This likeness is dated to 1595, on the evidence of two portraits attributed to Vanson in the collection of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh. It broadly repeats the composition of PG 156, in which the King is shown at half-length wearing a fur-trimmed cloak and tall hat slanting at an angle into the left of the picture. A small tondo (PG 1109), paired with a portrait of the Queen, places the king more centrally - losing something of the drama created by the diagonal within the rectangle of this composition - but agrees in all the principal details. Each is dated in an inscription to 1595, which accords with the sitter's apparent age (twenty nine) and a terminus post quem is provided by the King''s jewelled hat badge in the form of a crowned ''A'', which refers to Anne of Denmark whom he married in 1589 by proxy and then in person in the following year. The magnificence of this jewel indicates a love of such objects on the King's part, which we may take as a true representation of his taste. The later portraits of c.1608 by John de Critz (example: Dulwich Picture Gallery, London) famously show a different and even larger jewel worn in the King''s hat.

Adrian Vanson had arrived in Scotland by 1584, and succeeded his fellow Netherlander Arnold Brockorst as painter to the King. Bronckorst had been the king's painter since the monarch's minority, and had painted the famous portrait of the child-king James VI holding a small hawk. The selection of this earlier Dutchman as King''s painter is highly significant, therefore: he could not have been chosen by the King himself, but rather by his regents, and it is symptomatic of the extraordinary change of direction in the Scottish state and religion after the flight and abdication of Mary Stuart in 1567. Previously Scotland's ties had always been with Catholic France, and it was to French art that Scottish painting in the sixteenth century looked for inspiration. Just as the country's religion was reformed after Mary, so its art also took on a decidedly protestant character, and it was natural that James's court should employ painters from militantly Protestant Holland.

It is suggested that Vanson may have entered Scottish court circles in the retinue of George 5th Lord Seton1, who travelled extensively in protestant Europe and is known to

A monarch wing swoops on a yellow nectar trove. The butterfly dome at the Sagbayan Peak is teeming with butterflies of all colors. It seems to be favorite destination of school children on field trips, as we had to elbow our way past a huddle of kids listening to the caretaker's scientific lecture on metamorphosis.

Joe-Joe's First Flight

Joe-Joe’s father works at the local airport, one of the first in the area, at a time when segregation rules. Even though the men who work at the airport, including Joe-Joe’s dad, were promised flying jobs, the owner refuses to let them fly. The town of Blind Eye has lost hope over the men’s heartbreak and the injustice being done to them, so much so that the moon won’t shine down on it any longer. More than anything, Joe-Joe wants to bring the moon back to Blind Eye so he can return hope to the townspeople. This is an extraordinary storybook about lost hope and what can happen when dreams are allowed to flourish.
