Automotive Technology Program

Many technicians love the day-to-day challenge of repairing cars and have good careers doing just that. Others branch out. They may become service managers, service engineers, race team pit crew members, automotive writers - even auto technology teachers. Those with a flair for business may own their own shop or manage a shop or car dealership.

In this instance, I still couldn't see properly, but assumed the leak was from that shiny nut.

I was right.

Modification of the Fragmentarium Distance Estimator sample program. I wanted something more interesting to look at than the default 8 sphere cube. (But I find that I am still completely mystified by how the distance estimator is rendered :-)

float DE(vec3 pos) {
float i,k;
vec3 v,w;
// Setting k to 0.85 will create a partially connected lattice (but creates a rendering break, unless you remove the if (abs(pos.x) > 2.0) conditional.
k=1.0;

// Place 8 spheres at the points of a cube surrounding the origin (0,0,0) of the coordinate space
i= abs(length(abs(pos)+vec3(-1.0))-0.25) * 1.0;
// Surround the original cube array with an infinite sphere lattice (using SIN to bound the distance estimate)
if (abs(pos.x) > 2.0) {

w=vec3(sin(k*pos.x),sin(k*pos.y),sin(k*pos.z));

Changing the internal hard drive of my ol' faithful Pismo 400

Changing the internal hard drive of my ol' faithful Pismo 400

September 2006: After more than 6 years in service, this lovely Mac is still my everyday computer. These days, I'm giving it its second hard drive upgrade. Originally, it came with a 6Gb drive. It has been running with a 30Gb Hitachi Travelstar for three years, but is now getting an 80Gb drive.

[Update, October 2007: I have now replaced this Mac with a white Macbook. But I am keeping the Pismo. Forever, probably. My favorite computer. Has anybody got a Pismo power adaptor to spare? Mine's broken.]

CAMERA LCD SCREEN REPAIR : CAMERA LCD

CAMERA LCD SCREEN REPAIR : RV ROOF REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS.

Camera Lcd Screen Repair

camera lcd screen repair

    lcd screen
  • A liquid crystal display (LCD) is a thin, flat electronic visual display that uses the light modulating properties of liquid crystals (LCs). LCs do not emit light directly.

  • (LCD screens) for the GameCube have been made by a variety of manufacturers (Intec, Mad Catz, Zenith) that snap onto the GameCube and thus allow you to play it without a television. This would make it somewhat portable for taking it on trips or in the car.

  • The Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) is the small screen on the rear of many digital cameras. The LCD is used as a viewfinder, to compose images and to check images after exposure. You can use the LCD for viewing and editing images.

    camera
  • equipment for taking photographs (usually consisting of a lightproof box with a lens at one end and light-sensitive film at the other)

  • A camera is a device that records/stores images. These images may be still photographs or moving images such as videos or movies. The term camera comes from the camera obscura (Latin for "dark chamber"), an early mechanism for projecting images. The modern camera evolved from the camera obscura.

  • A chamber or round building

  • television camera: television equipment consisting of a lens system that focuses an image on a photosensitive mosaic that is scanned by an electron beam

!!!Disaster Strikes!!!

!!!Disaster Strikes!!!

WELL, I did have a good day today and tried not to let this get to me too much here on Christmas, but I got two big photographic blows today:

1) I pulled out my Raynox lens today and went to put it on my camera, only to discover that one of the two plastic tabs that hold it on had broken off in my luggage, rendering it unusable. After getting my rising feeling of panic under control as I realized I'm here in Florida without a macro lens now, I told myself I would get online tomorrow morning and have another overnighted.

2) Well, no use now, as right in the middle of shooting photos tonight, the image in the LCD screen flicked off and on and then went black.

Now the screen only displays black, and the camera only takes pictures like this one. I can view photos I took before on it, and I see all the little icons and such normally displayed on the screen, but no picture.

I looked it up; apparently this Black Screen of Death happens sometimes to Canons. The CCD just up and dies. Some descriptions said, "typically if the camera is in a hot or very humid environment." Well, I may be in Florida, but it's December, so it's not "very" either of those two.

I will have to send it in and have it repaired. You know that feeling of panic I mentioned at the thought of having no Raynox macro lens here in Florida? Yeah, well...

At least I have my S70. :-/

La Mer

La Mer

I am reading Les Miserables again. Even though the French politics get a little messy, it's an excellent book.

Now, for the bad news. Right in the middle of this shoot, my LCD screen stopped functioning. Upon my return to my room, I discovered that the problem lies not actually with the screen, but with the Review and Menu buttons. This is really horrible. It means I either have to shoot on auto and blindly hope my shots turn out, or I won't be taking photos for a while. I'm leaning toward the latter. I need to have the thing repaired before I leave on my trip, which I will talk about more at a later date.

Luckily I shot a little beforehand, so I will post as long as I can, and then I will start the Make Something Cool Every Day project as a supplement. Hopefully this won't last too long.

What a fabulous finisher for our trip. Not.

Explore #76, June 8th.

All I Managed to do Today.

I didn't get that much accomplished. I wrote a letter to my friend who's overseas in Iraq, listened to some music, and tried to crop some shitty pictures I took of some bush bean buds. I went to the drugstore to get an eyeglass repair kit, so I could switch out the lenses in my supposedly identical 2 pair of frames. Yeah, they're the same color, but completely different in lens length. So, I have to buy a whole new set of glasses. Le sigh.

In a letter dated 5th November 1834 the Donaghadee Harbour Commissioners informed the Ballast Board that they were prepared to exhibit a light on the south pier and requested the Board to take it under their care. Trinity House were written to for their concurrence but they promptly declined to sanction, referring the Ballast Board to page 75 of a report from the Select Committee of the House of Commons in connection with light dues. Towards the end of the following year, 1835, the Treasury approached the Board about Donaghadee Lighthouse and the Treasury were informed that the Board was willing to take over the light on receiving a formal order to that effect from the Treasury. The latter replied on 11th January 1836 authorising the Ballast Board to take charge of the light, which they accordingly did, and the light was established later in 1836 with a fixed character, that is non flashing showing red mainly to seaward and white over the harbour and towards Belfast Lough.

The tower is built of cut limestone, fluted, and in its early days was unpainted in natural grey colour. Today the tower, including the lantern and dome, is painted white with a black plinth, a decision which was taken some time between 1869 and 1875.

A dwelling was suggested for the keeper in 1841 and land near the root of the pier was rented from the Board of Works, but the ground became a yard for maintenance of local Donaghadee Sound buoys and the dwelling was not built until 1864. In the mean time the keeper continued to live in a house in the town rented by the Ballast Board.

A serious fire damaged the optic and lantern on the 12th May 1900 and a temporary light had to be shown whilst a new optic was obtained and the damaged lantern repaired. This was completed by September of the same year.

Conversion to unwatched electric was effected from 2nd October 1934, Donaghadee thus having the distinction of being the first Irish Lighthouse to be converted to electric. Chaine Tower at Larne followed the next year and Tuskar in 1938.

The character of the new light was Isophase, white every four seconds and the red sector was discontinued. The power was considerably increased from less than 1,000 to 20,000 candelas.

A standby acetylene light was fitted to the lamp changer which would come into operation automatically if the lamp or electric supply should fail.

In April 1967 an automatic standby to mains generator was installed in the base of the tower, a red sector was re-established (326° to shore) and a new lamp changer with two electric lamps was fitted into the optic. The standby acetylene was discontinued. These alterations were in conjunction with the withdrawal of the Skulmartin lightvessel and establishment of a high focal plane buoy in its stead.

During 1950 the Ministry of Commerce approached the Commissioners for permission to erect a siren fog signal to be sounded when local, mainly fishing boats, would be returning to the harbour during fog. This was granted together with Board of Trade sanction and the siren was mounted on the lantern balcony railing. However it did not come into operation until 1953 and is controlled from the Harbour Board Office.

Ireland 2009, Cahir Castle Keep 2

Ireland 2009, Cahir Castle Keep 2

The Siege of Cahir Castle took place in Munster, in southern Ireland in 1599, during the campaign of the Earl of Essex against the rebels in the Nine Years War (1595-1603). Although the castle was considered the strongest fortress in the country, Essex took it after only a few days of artillery bombardment. However, Queen Elizabeth dismissed her commander's achievement, claiming the defenders were merely a "rabble of rogues".

Having arrived at Dublin in April 1599 at the head of the largest army ever seen in Ireland (16,000 troops and 1,300 horse), Essex avoided confrontation with the northern rebels under Hugh O'Neill, and chose instead to settle the southern part of the country, which was most susceptible to Spanish interference at a time when England feared another Armada expedition. In the course of a controversial, and largely wasteful, tour of the province of Munster, he secured the surrender of Derrinlaur Castle on the river Suir, before fixing his sights on the greater prize of Cahir Castle further upriver.

For any force hoping to penetrate westward from the Suir and deep into rebel country, the capture of Cahir castle was a necessity. It stood on a rock in the middle of the river, and was considered impregnable by its situation, with its large keep enjoying the protection of six stout towers and thick curtain walls.

At the time, the castle was the property of the Irish nobleman, Lord Cahir, and in the custody of his brother, James Galdie ("the Englishman"). Before the capture of Derrinlaur Castle, Essex had accused Cahir of colluding with the rebel White Knight. But as the English army prepared to march from the riverside town of Clonmel, Cahir gave assurances that James Galdie would surrender the castle as soon as they came in view.

Siege of Cahir Castle in 1599.On the morning of 25 May, Essex divided the army into 3 battles, the vanguard to lead and the main battle to assemble on the fair green a mile outside Clonmel. Artillery - a cannon and a culverin - was brought by water into the quay under Essex's supervision. With the protection of the rearguard and a troop of horse, the guns were dragged by hand the 10 miles to Cahir (for want of draught horses), in poor weather over bridges that groaned under their weight. Essex rode ahead with the army and overtook the vanguard; they stopped a mile short of the castle and waited for the artillery.

Lord Cahir was sent ahead (with Henry Danvers, lieutenant general of the horse) to call on his brother to surrender and allow an English garrison to enter; he was answered with threats and insults by those who came out to parley with him, and was then accused by Essex of breach of faith. He proposed a further parley, but Essex was determined to capture the castle, and he placed Cahir and his wife under guard.

A council of war was called in the presence of the Earl of Ormond. The army was stationary, with supplies running low; and in poor weather on a flooded river plain the hazard of disease was increasing. There was also a rumour of a rebel force of 5,000 in the vicinity. Orders were given to procure more munitions from Waterford, as well as victuals from the town and surrounding country.

In the evening, Essex viewed the castle with George Bingham, who had successfully besieged Maguire's island castle in Enniskillen in 1594. It was decided that approaches should be made along the east bank by way of old ditches and a wall, and that a trench be dug close up to the riverbank, within 50 paces of the castle, where a platform for the cannon might be erected. The engineers worked under cover of the musketeers and caliver men, with gabions (wicker baskets filled with earth) before them. The culverin was to be placed further back, with a wider view of the castle flanks.

On Saturday the 26th, the vanguard and main battle moved closer to the castle to camp on the east bank; Essex chose not to surround the castle by occupying the west bank with a detachment, for fear that his men would be unable to make it back to fend off any attack. In the afternoon, there was free traffic in and out of the castle, and he ordered a detachment of 300 to seize the orchard garden on the southside, which had been plashed on its outer edges: this was readily achieved with the loss of only a few men, although the English had been especially vulnerable as they crossed the river.

Late in the day, the rearguard arrived with the artillery. After a night of preparation, the guns were in place on the east bank on Whitsun Sunday, the 27th, and opened fire. The cannon was at point-blank range, but its carriage broke at the second shot, which damage took a day and a half to repair. A ball stuck in the culverin, but this was quickly cleared, and fifty shots were fired, until the garrison was silenced: they dared not stay in any tower or fight on that side of the castle. During the cannonade, Lord Cahir and his wife were said to have wept like children.

365 Days -- Attempt #2 -- Day 2 -- Just call me Mr. Fixit

The toilet was leaking and I got to spend my morning fixing it. Sadly, I didn't really get to use this gigantic channel lock pliers, like I'd hoped. The good news: the repair is complete!

This photo isn't nearly as glamourous as yesterday's self portrait either.

New Toilet

New Toilet

I had never done this before, so it took a couple days (and many calls to my dad) for me to rip out the old toilet and floor and put all new in. But yay for that being finished - and I think all the leaks have stopped.
