Alto Stop She's actually hitchhiking. It's called alto stop; people wait next to stop signs or stop lights or places where cars usually stop to see if a driver is going to the same place they are. They usually pay the driver 1 peso or .50 centavos, not hard currency. Other options for inner-city travel are taxis, shuttles and buses. There are different taxis for locals and tourists, locals often complain about the lack of taxis for them, citing the fact that tourist taxi drivers make so much more money that they often just ignore locals in favor of picking up a more lucrative (albeit illegal) fare. Tourists taxis cost the same as taxis in the States, or more, while local taxis can take you across the city for under 3$. Shuttles are minivans that drive on a select route, they stop at certain spots and people jump in and out of the back, passing their .20 or so cent fare up to the driver. Public buses are the cheapest, costing a few pennies, but are often packed beyond consideration and running few and far between. Late night bus runs are most likely to be ride-able, but stay away during rush hour or on sunny days for routes that go to the beach. Commute In Europe, you often see young African immigrants selling stuff (sunglasses, purses, cheap jewelry, etc) on the streets. They keep their goods on large sheets so they can bundle it up and run away should the police show up. As I was waiting for the Metro train in Barcelona, I looked across the way and saw a whole group of these guys across the way with their bundles at the end of the day heading home.
