Hope Works cement factory
The cement factory looks a little out of place in the Hope Valley, and the fact that it is a National Park means many people get het up about it. Personally I think it is a good place for a cement factory, it has both the limestone and shale needed within yards, and is by a railway line to bring in fuel and take out cement. There has been a cement factory here since 1929, although these buildings largely date from the 1960's. The company have permission to quarry the stone until 2042, so it should keep going until then at least.
I went on an induction course to the Peak District National Park Authority, who I technically am employed by. It involved a trip here and to various other sites to show what beadth of things the National Park Authority do (like regulate minerals extraction), and what probelms they face, and what successes they've had. I'd heard most of it before, but it was interesting nevertheless.
