Day 261 - October 11, 2011

Day 261 - October 11, 2011

Field trip to KidZania, Jamsil.

Today we visited KidZania in Jamsil. KidZania is a children's indoor theme park that is set up to simulate a real city. All of the shops, stores, restaurants and services act as stations where the children can take part in activities that simulate a given job or career. The idea is that children can get a feel for what career path they may eventually decide to pursue.

The Seoul KidZania location opened fairly recently and ever since I arrived I've heard my students rave about it. I must say, it was pretty cool. There were more than 90 different stations, covering careers such as firefighter, tax lawyer, forensics, magician, beautician, mobile phone design, security guard, NGO, and many, many more.

Unfortunately, the lines were all fairly long, so our students only got to try a handful of stations over the course of the day. Here, my kindergarten class is stepping into the life of a donut chef. This was the calmest I've ever seen my kindergarten terror, Jaden. Maybe he just found his future career.

The Failure of Environmental Education (And How We Can Fix It)

The Failure of Environmental Education (And How We Can Fix It)

At a time when wild places everywhere are vanishing before our eyes, Charles Saylan and Daniel T. Blumstein offer this passionate indictment of environmental education--along with a new vision for the future. Writing for general readers and educators alike, Saylan and Blumstein boldly argue that education today has failed to reach its potential in fighting climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation. In this forward-looking book, they assess the current political climate, including the No Child Left Behind Act, a disaster for environmental education, and discuss how education can stimulate action--including decreasing consumption and demand, developing sustainable food and energy sources, and addressing poverty. Their multidisciplinary perspective encompasses such approaches as school gardens, using school buildings as teaching tools, and the greening of schoolyards. Arguing for a paradigm shift in the way we view education as a whole, The Failure of Environmental Education demonstrates how our education system can create new levels of awareness and work toward a sustainable future.

30952 Broad Beach Road, Malibu

In June 2005, property owners in Broad Beach in Malibu allegedly took the utterly astonishing step of using bulldozers to remove the sand from the public beach. The bulldozing damaged natural resources along the beach and demonstrated yet another attempt by Malibu property owners to cut off the public's right to use public beaches. The California Attorney General filed suit against the Trancas Property Owners Association for interfering with public access to the beach, and theft (conversion) of the sand.

The sign reads: `PRIVATE PROPERTY DO NOT TRESPASS CALIF. PENAL CODE SEC. 602(N) PRIVATE PROPERTY LINE BEGINS -- FEET FROM THE OCEAN FROM THIS SIGN SURVEYED --.` There is wet sand up to the signpost. A close up of this sign appears in the following image.
