From the Top When I was 10, for fun one summer day, my dad brought my sister and me to his jobsite in downtown Des Moines. He always worked on tall buildings, I knew he'd helped build a lot of them in Des Moines. The building he was working on this day was already built, they were just doing some sort of repair or something on top of it. We took an elevator clear up to the top. Except - and this was truly the most terrifying part of the whole trip - this was a wobbily, temporary elevator plastered on the outside of the building with brackets and chains and other pieces I wasn't accustomed to seeing around the elevators I normally took. It was a long trip up. Once we were up there, we got to walk around and look over the edges to the little toy-cars motoring around the chalkboard streets. My dad is completely at ease a million feet in the air. This was evident as he allowed us to wander where ever we wished and lean over as far as we dared. Then once we'd had enough, we climbed back into that ghastly "elevator", I crossed my fingers and we decended back to the big streets. As I counted myself lucky for having made it back down alive, My feet back on the earth, I kissed my dad good bye Waving to him on his way to go back up and finish his day, The gut-wrenching fear already faded away Now I just wanted to feel that light-headed, woozy, light-as-air, if-i-make-a-wrong-move-I-could-actually-die exhileratingly tempting and desirous high. Public School 27 Landmarks Preservation Commission September 19, 1995; Designation List 266 LP-1895 Constructed in 1895-97, Public School 27 is one of the earliest buildings produced by C.B,J. Snyder during his long career as Superintendent of School Buildings for the Board of Education of New York City. Snyder became Superintendent as huge waves of immigrant children were flooding New York schools, and shortly before consolidation of the city. Each of the city's five boroughs needed many new school buildings, and Snyder was responsible for the design and construction of them all. At first Snyder continued many of the stylistic traditions of his predecessor, George W. Debevoise, as seen in the massive rectangular shapes of his early schools and his emphasis on a central entrance tower. In P.S. 27, as well as other of his schools from this period, Snyder used such design elements from New York's Dutch and Federal periods as the stepped gables and polygonal tower. P.S. 27 represents Snyder's successful effort to create a school building that would be an important and imposing neighborhood structure while meeting the requirements of the Board and the children who would use it. Development of the Area From 1639 -- when the Dutch West India Company put-chased from the Mohegan Indians all the land that falls within the boundaries of the present borough — through the mid-nineteenth century, the Bronx retained its rural character. However, as massive immigration and industrialization began to alter the character of New York City to the south, it was inevitable that the northward march of urbanization would eventually engulf the Bronx as well. The first immigrants to come to the Bronx were the Irish who arrived after 1840 and settled primarily in Mott Haven, adjacent to the Harlem River. This area, within the section called Morrisania, was named for Jordan L. Mott, inventor of the coal burning stove and founder, in 1828, of the Mott Iron Works on East 134th Street. Beginning in 1842, the Irish participated in the construction of the Harlem and Hudson River railroads and the Croton Aqueduct, and they were joined after 1848 by an influx of Germans. The new railroads opened up great potential for industrial development, and during the second half of the century factories were erected along the Harlem and East River waterfronts. The population of the Bronx rose from 28,981 in 1870, to 81,255 in 1890, and further to 200,507 in 1900, with even greater increases in the following years. Politically, the Bronx remained a part of Westchester County from 1683 until the area was annexed to the City of New York. This change occurred in two stages, with the western section being joined to New York in 1874 and the remainder in 1895. In 1898 the Charter of the City of Greater New York was implemented, creating the five boroughs, including the Borough of the Bronx. Schools in Greater New York A major effect of the new charter was to create a unified educational system out of numerous independently administered school districts with a variety of curricula, grade divisions, educational policies, and standards for personnel selection. This endeavor was hindered initially by a tremendous shortage of existing school buildings, which was created primarily by two factors: new laws establishing mandatory education for children, and huge waves of immigration at the end of the nineteenth century which increased the population density of many areas of the city. The problem was noted even before consolidation, in 1896, in the Board of Education's Annual Report: Insufficient school accommodations have furnished cause for very general complaint on the part of the citizens of New York during the past ten years. The unprecedented growth of the city, together with unexpected movements of population, rendered it almost impossible to keep pace with the demands in given localities or to anticipate the needs of certain sections of the city that speedily outgrew the accommodations that were provided. During the past year... the question of increased and improved school accommodations was kept constantly in mind? Between 1884 and 1897, the Board of Education acquired 125 new sites for school buildings in Manhattan and the Bronx, providing space for more than 132,000 new students. However, this new construction was still not enough. By July 1899, schools in Manhattan and the Bronx could accommodate 232,931 students, many in half-day sessions, but many more children had to be turned away for lack of space. C.B.J. Snyder and His Work The architect who planned and was responsible for the design and building of all the new and expanded schools was the Board of Education's Superintendent of School Buildings, C.B.J. Snyder (1860-1945). Little is known of Snyder's background. He was born in Stillwater, New York, and studied architecture with William Bishop. Snyder was appointed as Superintendent of School Buildings in 1891 when the Board oversaw only Manhattan an Basement of My House. In Santos, whilst driving towards Sao Vicente I saw this very old House. Perhaps over 100 years of unaltered History. Everyone seems to want an Apartment close to the Beach. Well, this House was exactly 100 mts. from the Beach and abandoned. So I searched out the legal owner and bought this beauty. To enter the living quarters, you had to climb the marble stairs that I am standing on to take this photo. Upstairs was the old Lord's Quarters, downstairs there was the same room space but with a lower ceiling. I will explain, at the turn of last century (1800/1900) the wealthy lived in town near the docks, and had a beach House for weekends and keeping their boats. Labour was cheap, so the lower quarters that you see here were for the many servants. The upper floor was for the owners, marble all over, imported stained glass windows sided the solid Russian Pine (also imported) double Venizian windows. The whole house was Russian Pine, ceiling, roofing the lot. Woodworms did not like this noble wood for it's acidity. I have a photo of the outside building and the stained glass windows, but must find these to upload. The basement had a 2mt. ceiling and upstairs 4mt. This photo was taken when arriving from the office, the entrance was via the upper floor. Since I always carried a camera and saw this flower sprouting from the roots of the front tree. I decided to register it's beauty. Power cable Power line communication or power line carrier (PLC), also known as Power line Digital Subscriber Line (PDSL), mains communication, power line telecom (PLT), or power line networking (PLN), is a system for carrying data on a conductor also used for electric power transmission. Broadband over Power Lines (BPL) uses PLC by sending and receiving radio signals over power lines to provide access to the Internet. Electrical power is transmitted over high voltage transmission lines, distributed over medium voltage, and used inside buildings at lower voltages. Powerline communications can be applied at each stage. Most PLC technologies limit themselves to one set of wires (for example, premises wiring), but some can cross between two levels (for example, both the distribution network and premises wiring). All power line communications systems operate by impressing a modulated carrier signal on the wiring system. Different types of powerline communications use different frequency bands, depending on the signal transmission characteristics of the power wiring used. Since the power wiring system was originally intended for transmission of AC power, the power wire circuits have only a limited ability to carry higher frequencies. The propagation problem is a limiting factor for each type of power line communications. Data rates over a power line communication system vary widely. Low-frequency (about 100-200 kHz) carriers impressed on high-voltage transmission lines may carry one or two analog voice circuits, or telemetry and control circuits with an equivalent data rate of a few hundred bits per second; however, these circuits may be many miles (kilometres) long. Higher data rates generally imply shorter ranges; a local area network operating at millions of bits per second may only cover one floor of an office building, but eliminates installation of dedicated network cabling 45/50 - Connected Spent the last two nights with my office floor covered in frankenstein computers, tech support has never been so cool. Beech Floor. Floor To The Floor Lyrics. Beech Floor
Pebble on beech! Did I just hear someone groan? behave yourselves! After disgracing myself yesterday I worked late into yesterday evening to get the beech-style flooring for my new digital workroom near to completion. This morning, after being on my knees for most of yesterday, I could hardly move, but I had to get on with it so by lunch time today I had completed all the fiddly bits. The next phase will be to start building the new workstation and fit enough enclosed wall cupboards to house most of my collection of history books. Oh, and the pebble? That was given to me by a camera-club and flickr friend Brian, who was concerned I might not have a pebble when I needed one most. Beech Flooring Just the beginning. The pennies are for spacing. 11.365. Well, i barely got this one posted before day 11 expired on me. I took this early on in the day, but I thought I might do another one. Yeah, that didn't happen. I actually took my little camera on my ride today planning on taking some pictures. Two things happend. First, it was brutally warm to be messing around with photography and the second was that there was another rider behind me so I couldn't just screw around. I had to actually pretend like I knew what I was doing. In the end, despite some hike-a-bike sections, I left spandex boy in the dust. Nice. I feel so much better today. It's amazing. The coldbuster really worked. I should be going to bed so I don't get sick. Hmm... Jamba Juice crave Before school started, my friend and I walked to Jamba Juice so that he could get a Coldbuster. Ground floor vs first floor. Shaw ceramic flooring. Duravit second floor. Ground Floor Vs First Floor
Allan Border raises his bat after breaking Gavaskar's record of the highest run scorer in test cricket-Australia vs NZL 1st test Chrishtchurch 1993 When he was playing, Allan Border was never my favourite cricketer. I couldn't see past the glittering surfaces of Dennis Lillee, Doug Walters, and Ian Chappell; then Vivian Richards, Clive Lloyd and Michael Holding. Experience didn't add depth to my vision. In recent years my favourites have been dashers like Adam Gilchrist, princes of the willow like VVS Laxman, or fearsome athletes like Curtly Ambrose. But just recently I went back to look at the Australian "Team of the Century", voted in 2000. Every player in the XI was part of a golden age - from the years before the first World War, or playing around Don Bradman in the 1930s and 1940s, or around Chappell in the 1970s, or around Shane Warne and the Waughs in the last decade. The 12th man in that side played in no great teams. He came into Australian cricket during World Series Cricket. He survived the reunification in 1979 and was building his name as a batsman when Australian cricket disintegrated in 1984. The team were being smashed. Kim Hughes relinquished the captaincy in tears, then fled with a Test squad's worth of players to South Africa. What did Allan Border do? He had been to the Caribbean, and played in Trinidad two of the greatest innings by any Australian anywhere: 98 not out and 100 not out, to earn the most miraculous draw. He'd proved himself as the one man who could stand up to them. So he took the captaincy, and in the next few years stood as the single pillar around which Australian cricket was rebuilt. He scored 11,174 Test runs, which no Australian has yet passed. He averaged over 50! He was the only one to make it into that Team of the Century who had spent most of his career surrounded by strugglers. Also recently, I watched a TV documentary called Cricket in the Eighties. Usually any sporting footage more than 10 years old looks inferior. Tennis players dab and slice, footballers walk around the park leisurely, cricket's bowlers look round-arm, and the batsmen - even Bradman - have distinctly dodgy techniques. Everything is slower. If you transplanted any player from the past into the present, they simply couldn't take the speed. Yet when I watched those West Indian batteries - Holding, Malcolm Marshall, Joel Garner, Courtney Walsh, Ambrose - I saw attacks that were faster, nastier, and harder than today's. Pitches were most certainly quicker and bouncier. If you threw a 2006 vintage Ricky Ponting, or Mohammad Yousuf, or Sachin Tendulkar into a 1984 Test match against those West Indians in, say, Brisbane or Barbados, it's the present stars who would suffer. So my appreciation of Allan Border has increased over time. As it should. I feel that Border's legacy will grow and grow over the years, as will Brian Lara's for similar reasons. Yet while Border developed, under duress, personal leadership skills, which Lara never did, he was never as glamorous as the man who took his world record. Border stood in a baseballer's crouch, bat raised, ready to hop backwards and pull or cut the short ball. The Trinidad innings of 1984 were full of twitching jabs at balls aimed into his armpits. As he aged he became a plainly unattractive batsman to watch, all punch, no grace. But this is to forget what a wonderful attacker he was. He was arguably the best player of spin Australia has produced in 50 years. He scored 150 in each innings in a Test in Lahore against Iqbal Qasim and Tauseef Ahmed. It would have been a dream to see him play Shane Warne. Though his reputation is built on stodge and defiance, Border was also the finest all-round one-day cricketer of his time, alongside Viv Richards. I was at the Sydney Cricket Ground in 1985 when Border smashed an attack of Holding, Garner, Marshall, Winston Davis and Richards for 127 not out off 140 balls. He was also a brilliant fielder. In his early years he was a wonderful catcher in the hardest position, the wide third-to-fifth slips. His left-arm spinners were always useful, and in typical Border fashion, he underused himself. In 1988-89 he took 11 wickets in a Test match against West Indies. Yet the enduring image of Border is from off the field, from the decisive Adelaide Test of the 1992-93 series. Sitting in the dressing room he clutched a lucky cricket ball in his hands. Finally we were going to beat them. Finally Border was going to beat them. Two runs short, Walsh got Craig McDermott with a lifter. The keeper caught the ball, but the cameras caught Border. He sprang to his feet and hurled his ball into the floor. An entire career's worth of frustration captured in a single gesture. Border retired one year before Australia won back the Frank Worrell Trophy. He never held it. But that's the way life is. It's not a fairytale. And Allan Border was never the fairytale hero. If I'm appreciating him more now, I'm glad. It shows some wisdom is finally getting through. Malcolm Knox is a former chief cricket correspondent and literary editor of the Sydney Mor ILA Joan Frye Williams: Show the Passion Dare to wear your heart on your sleeve--Joan Frye WIlliams Other pearls from Joan: • Make quality convenient (no left turns) • Come to us “your way” • Mix generations: do stuff everyone loves (stories, science, hands –on activities) • Offer programs 24/7: anything you can get online • Show what’s happening now (ex., book feed, everything that’s checked in, banners) • All transactions may not need to be mediated • Priority: simplify. No “I know this is a stupid question”…Don’t make people feel stupid • “Pay here”: describe what the user does, don’t make them learn our lingo • Make browsing easier (93% is browsing). “take me off the shelf” factor • Treat exceptions as exceptions: accommodate mercifully • There may not be ONLY one fair way to do everything • More tools, fewer rules • Use underdue vs. overdue notices (give a heads-up) • Priority: Facilitate how well user does what they need to do • Keep people from getting stuck in the first place. They don’t have to suffer for us to feel important. • Question policies and procedures that don’t make sense to civilians (librarians have a much higher tolerance for order) • Getting books back may not be as important as getting people back • More humanity, less anonymity: name a profession who doesn’t introduce themselves. Would you get a haircut without knowing their name? Confidentiality is important but we should know their names. • Priority: Demonstrate hospitality. Sign in a museum says “First floor is food and drink friendly, second floor is just friendly.” • Presume innocence: we can’t treat people like thieves. We’re not TSA or traffic court. • Make the desk neutral territory: no chotchkies- people shouldn’t feel like they’re interrupting you • Prepare everyone to be a first responder - “what can we do for you” - and do a good hand off • Don’t make people have to admit that they’ve failed (as in “did you find what you’re looking for?”) • The library may not be the primary window on the outside world. We need to tell the local story. No one else cares more about that community. More local, less . Your brand may have a lot to do with the heart of your community. • Priority: Celebrate unique identity • Participate in local non-library e-groups: get people at the point of need • Convene community conversation: you’re the neutral ground. • Information may not be an end in itself (information is how librarians express love) it’s a means to something else. (People don’t want a resume, they want a job.) • More results, fewer processes: don’t describe the ingredients, describe the cake • Priority: transformation • Link services to predictable life situations: “save time, get better grades” • Library work will still be fun • When in doubt, chose: o Generosity (perfectionism is the opposite of generosity) o Flexibility o Trust (going in, don’t expect to be disappointed) o Hope (faith that it’s working) o Teamwork (assume it will give better quality) o Laughter o Gratitude: thank people for their service -- not their time! o Show the passion: dare to wear your heart on your sleeve. It’s work worth doing. I was in Seattle for my friends wedding and we decided to stop by the very interesting central library in downtown Seattle for a little while. On the way up the escalator I saw what looked like a great composition happening and this is what came out. I love how the interplay of the roof lines and the escalator work together in such a way as to emphasize the light and dark areas of the image. 18 Jan (2. House of Stress) This is our 'old new house' - we used to live there, now we rent it out as 2 flats but we hope to move back in a couple of years and make it our long term family home. We love it, we love the street it's on the space inside and I miss living there. This week it's been nothing but stress though - downstairs' boiler blew up and required two engineers visits, I had to compensate the tenants as well for 4 days without heat or hot water, then upstairs had a plumbing issue requiring Dyno-Rod, then they reported a problem with their washing machine (Dyno-Rod had unplugged it!) and then at 8pm yesterday we had a call to say that two glazed panels had blown out of the porch requiring emergency glaziers who charged ?209 to board up and make safe. Here's to a better rest of 2009 for No.5 and it's owner and occupiers! Plumbing "The plumber was digging around in the pipes & he saw something shine in the muck & it turned out to be the soul of the last tenant. See Through Shed Set well back from the nearest gravel road, this poor old shed is the last structure still standing on an abandoned farmstead in Western McIntosh County, ND. If you look through the door at left, you can see the remains of a metal grain bin shoved atop a nearby rock pile. My beloved maps are not perfect. This poor building wasn't shown on my McIntosh County map at all. I noticed it off in the distance as Stumpy and I were investigating another abandoned building, so we made our way up to it to check it out.
