Yes, it's late and yes, I'm taking a photo with my phone again. This time it's of my clean kitchen. Don't faint. I cleaned it myself. No Matthew, No Amanda, and No Amy. Wow, right? It's been screaming at me to be cleaned ever since we got back from Atlanta. I'm simply just not the housecleaning type. When the kids were little it always seemed like such a losing battle that I just threw up the white flag in surrender. In high school, I was just as bad (ask my Mom.) I waited until you couldn't see the carpet and then I would clean from top to bottom. It always amazed me the memories I could uncover just by cleaning up. Yesterday, Frank asked me to help organize the motorcycle paper work and I found a receipt from a tubing trip we took way back in 2000. Wow, it's so cool that a yellowed piece of paper brings back such happy thoughts. If cleaning the kitchen uncovered cool memories like that my dishes might not be stacked to the ceiling before finding their way to the dishwasher.

Lovely Georgetown home

It's been a roller coaster of a week. We've done some amazing things, and had a blast -- but we've had a lot of rotten [read: expensive] things happen, too. Sunday morning, we realized our air-conditioner was flooding our basement. (Well, actually the pipes from the a/c to the sump pump were clogged, causing the flood.) So, we had to rip apart our library/exercise room/sewing room/air-hockey room [it's a small room that serves many functions!] so a carpet restoration company could come in and remove the carpet padding, and dry the concrete and carpet, as well as replace all the above; one of our kittens pulled our drapes off the wall, including the bracket, so we decided it was a good time to send them all to the cleaners; our van needed it's 90K service, as well as a new side mirror, since I was off a hair backing into my garage, a new headlight and wiper arm assembly (ugh); and today, upon picking up Brian at work after we left the Zoo, our tire got punctured. Luckily, it happened at Georgetown, where the nice facilities services folks came out and changed it for us. And even better yet, we got to sit across the street from this lovely home.

Saltwater Crocodile, Kakadu National park

The saltwater or estuarine crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) is the largest of all living reptiles. It is found in suitable habitats in Northern Australia, the eastern coast of India and parts of Southeast Asia.The saltwater crocodile has a longer muzzle than the mugger crocodile: its length is twice its breadth at the base.[1] The saltwater crocodile has fewer armor plates on its neck than other crocodilians, and its broad body contrasts with that of most other lean crocodiles, leading to early unverified assumptions that the reptile was an alligator.[2]

An adult male saltwater crocodile's weight is 600 to 1,000 kilograms (1,300–2,200 lb) and length is normally 4.1 to 5.5 metres (13–18 ft), though mature males can be 6 metres (20 ft) or more and weigh 1,300 kilograms (2,900 lb) or larger.[3][4][5] This species has the greatest sexual dimorphism of any modern crocodilian, with females being much smaller than males. Typical female body lengths in the range of 2.1 to 3.5 metres (7–11 ft).[2][6][7] The largest female on record measured about 4.2 metres (14 ft).[5] The mean weight of the species as a whole is roughly 450 kilograms (1,000 lb).[8]
The largest size saltwater crocodiles can reach is the subject of considerable controversy. The longest crocodile ever measured snout-to-tail and verified was the skin of a dead crocodile, which was 6.1 metres (20 ft) long. As skins tend to shrink slightly after removal from the carcass, this crocodile's living length was estimated at 6.3 metres (21 ft), and it probably weighed well over 1,200 kilograms (2,600 lb).[9] Incomplete remains (the skull of a crocodile shot in Orissa[10]) have been claimed to come from a 7.6-metre (25 ft) crocodile, but scholarly examination suggested a length no greater than 7 metres (23 ft).[9] There have been numerous claims of crocodiles in the 9-metre (30 ft) range: the crocodile shot in the Bay of Bengal in 1840, reported at 10 metres (33 ft); another killed in 1823 at Jala Jala on the main island of Luzon in the Philippines reported at 8.2 metres (27 ft); a reported 7.6 metres (25 ft) crocodile killed in the Hooghly River in the Alipore District of Calcutta. However, examinations of these animals' skulls actually indicated animals ranging from 6 to 6.6 metres (20–21.7 ft).
With recent restoration of saltwater crocodile habitat and reduced poaching, it is possible that 7-metre (23 ft) crocodiles are alive today.[11] Guinness has accepted a claim of a 7-metre (23 ft) male saltwater crocodile living within Bhitarkanika Park in the state of Orissa, India,[10][12] although, due to the difficulty of trapping and measuring a very large live crocodile, the accuracy of these dimensions has yet to be verified.
A crocodile shot in Queensland in 1957 was reported to be 8.5 metres (28 ft) long, but no verified measurements were made and no remains of this crocodile exist. A "replica" of this crocodile has been made as a tourist attraction.[13][14][15] Many other unconfirmed reports of 8+ metres (28+ ft) crocodiles have been made[16][17] but these are highly unlikely.

Kuwait City (Arabic: E/JF) 'DCHJ*, transliteration: Mad+nat al-Kkwait), is the capital and largest city of Kuwait. It has an estimated population of 63,600 (2006 estimate) within city limits and 2.38 million in the metropolitan area. Located at the heart of the country on the shore of the Persian Gulf, and containing Kuwait's parliament (Majlis Al-Umma), most governmental offices, the headquarters of most Kuwaiti corporations and banks, it is the indisputable political, cultural and economic center of the emirate.

The Liberation Tower (2nd highest building on the right of the photo) is the highest structure in Kuwait. Construction of the tower commenced before the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait on August 2, 1990. It was meant to be called The Kuwait Telecommunications Tower. When the invasion took place, construction, which was almost half-way complete, was put on hold. However, the structure received no damage, and construction resumed after Saddam Hussein's forces were expelled on February 27, 1991. Upon completion in 1993, the tower was renamed the Liberation Tower, symbolizing Kuwait's liberation from Iraq. The tower contains a revolving restaurant and observation platform (in the first disc-shaped pod; now closed to the public for security reasons), and also houses radio and other telecommunications offices. The structure stands at 372 meters high (1,220 ft) at its pinnacle. The roof of the second pod on the tower is 308 meters high (1,010 ft). It is similar to the CN Tower because both contain a revolving restaurant, observation platform, telecommunications equipment and the same look.

As in all Middle East, the city skyline is constantly changing also in Kuwait City . The tower on the very right is a new addition to the city scape. Weather across Middle East has changed in last few days and Kuwait is experiencing humidity over 80% from its usual 10%. Change of weather has brought some clouds to Kuwaiti sky, which beautifully enhance colors in the evening sky.

Announcing - My Square Foot Garden!!

I'm doing a square foot garden in my parents yard this year. It's a 4x6 foot square and under about 5 inches of Mel's Mix is another foot or so of composting mulch and peat moss. I hope my little plants like it.
The weather has been so crazy lately that I haven't really done any planting. I did put some pea seeds in last weekend but we've been having alternating snow, 60 degree weather, hard frosts and warm rain. I hope they do OK, but I've got lots more seeds to plant if they don't make it through this early spring madness.
The square dividers are old venetian blind slats. I thought it was a pretty clever reuse of old material. The chicken wire is there to keep the dogs from digging. I'll figure out some other kind of cover to keep the jays, dogs and squirrels out over the next week or so.

Taken inside the Astor Events Center, where the BMW Car Club of America Party was held. The center is a living museum of classic cars, with almost 300 meticulously restored automobiles, restored and working vintage radios, hundreds of antique telephones alongside collections of model trains, gasoline pumps, antique slot machines, pedal cars, and movie memorabilia. There once was a dream of Irish people being good people. There was a time when we prided ourselves in our welcoming friendliness.

Saint Albert of Cologne quoted an authority to the young Thomas Aquinas who replied; "It is not who said it? - the question should be - what did they say?" Thomas noted that there was a need to go beyond the question of who the speaker was to what the speaker had to say. It would seem wise to go beyond Saint Thomas and to ask two further questions: How true is what they say? And, Do they follow their own counsel? If we were to ask these questions then we would find teachings that had a truth-value for us and also admire the speaker who told us that truth. It would seem that the standards we expect at all levels of public life presuppose that we do ask these questions of all the actions and utterances of personalities.

Recent years have seen a widening abyss grow between the standards demanded of public figures and the lives of the ordinary citizen. This is particularly so in areas dealing with social and sexual morality. It is sad that on the one hand we deplore the dysfunction of any public figure's actions and on the other we glory in the squalor of the soap-opera's depravities. The power of the soap pervades our lives far too much. Our interest in the Simpson and Clinton cases in the United States and the Royal Family in Britain betrays a sinister taste for snooping into the suffering in public people's lives. Most of us would recoil with horror if the television cameras arrived to tell the story of a friend's family breakdown, yet we watch with rapt attention when it somebody else's life under the lens. This clearly demonstrates that we have come to a stage where there is a huge difference between the care we extend to a friend or family member in difficulties and the sympathy we cannot muster for a public figure in a similar boat. Maybe it is as simple as the fact that we make some demand of public personalities to live like super-heroes and feel betrayed by their human weaknesses, and, the price of their failure is our contempt.

It is as if public personalities have been deemed the equivalent of the Pharisees of Jesus' time. Christ in the Gospel of Saint Matthew decries the behaviour of the scribes and the Pharisees who occupy the chair of Moses. He tells his listeners; "You must therefore do what they tell you and listen to what they say; but do not be guided by what they do: since they do not practise what they preach." [Mt. 23: 1-3] Is it fair to land every single figure in public life with the same burden of paragon behaviour?

Every society is structured with different people in different roles. Some are minor players others are major, some lead and others follow. Within each society there are laws, rules and customs. Each member must live up to the expectations of the society and it is only correct that the one who fails should be called to account. However, that is not the same as saying that there should be public ridicule of that same person. At weak moments in our lives we all crave to be left with some small amount of privacy in our indignity.

However, every minister of a religious communion, any politician, teacher, athlete or singer, who makes public pronouncements on what is right and wrong occupies the chair of Moses today. These have volunteered their lives and service to preaching and, as such, are the ones of whom high moral standards can be reasonably expected. So, what is the appropriate way of dealing with their failure to practice what they preach when that occasion arises? Should they be held to public ridicule in the Tabloids? Should we begin a campaign of hatred against them? In Thomas Moore's Utopia, criminals were paraded in glory through the streets. It was an effort stop people seeking public glory - has notoriety become the glory we celebrate today? Hear again what Christ said; "You must therefore do what they tell you and listen to what they say; but do not be guided by what they do: since they do not practise what they preach." Does it suit us to kill the faulty messenger because we did not like the message? Have we allowed our desire to punish the one who did not practice what they preached to obliterate the value of what they said? - it is not who said it, it is what did they say! Maybe what Saint Thomas advised was enough! Then … if all our crimes were written in broader phylacteries on our foreheads … well, let the one without sin cast the first stone!

Mount Tumbledown was attacked during the 1982 reoccupation of the Falklands by the 2nd Battalion of the Scots Guards on 13-14 Jun. Mount William was taken unopposed by the 1/7th Duke of Edinburgh's Own Gurkha Rifles later on 14 Jun when the Argentines fled, believing their own blood-curdling tales about the Gurkhas. A and C Companies of 40 Commando Royal Marines, under the command of 1st Battalion, Welsh Guards, captured Sapper Hill almost without conflict, just before the Argentine surrender.
