I've been helping out our General Manager a lot recently. Almost all of my work has been done in his office, and some at his desk. So, when I'm working after he leaves, it looks like I'm the GM. :D

ELEPHANT WALK INN PROVINCETOWN : INN PROVINCETOWN
ELEPHANT WALK INN PROVINCETOWN : HOTELS MEGEVE.
Elephant Walk Inn Provincetown
- Elephant Walk is a 1954 Paramount Pictures film, directed by William Dieterle, and starring Elizabeth Taylor, Dana Andrews, Peter Finch and Abraham Sofaer.
- Elephant Walk is a tradition at Texas A&M University in which the senior class walks around campus to remember the good times they had at Texas A&M. This tradition generally takes place the week before the Texas (University of Texas at Austin) football game.
- Underclassmen always wonder what goes on between the juniors and seniors during elephant walk while they are not allowed to watch. It is simply this. They fight. Wrestling, football games without pads, and assorted junior attacks with whip cream, eggs, etc
- A port town in southeastern Massachusetts, a noted resort and artists' community at the northern tip of Cape Cod; pop. 3,561
- Provincetown is a town located at the extreme tip of Cape Cod in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 3,431 at the 2000 census, with an estimated 2007 population of 3,174.
- An establishment providing accommodations, food, and drink, esp. for travelers
- A restaurant or bar, typically one in the country, in some cases providing accommodations
- hostel: a hotel providing overnight lodging for travelers

- Inns are generally establishments or buildings where travelers can seek lodging and, usually, food and drink. They are typically located in the country or along a highway.
Elephant Walk
The novelty of the Ceylon backgrounds and pictorial beauty are recommendable points in Elephant Walk, an otherwise leisurely-paced romantic drama. Robert Standish's novel about life among the pekoe-planters rates a sprawling script and direction that lacks attention-holding pace from William Dieterle. Of interest is the fact that in some of the Ceylon-filmed longshots, Vivien Leigh is still seen, although not noticeably so. Illness forced the English star out
of the picture after about a month of lensing, with Elizabeth Taylor replacing.
Elephants are the sympathetic heavies in this story of a bride who comes to Ceylon from England and finds her husband, the natives and the tea plantation still under the dominance of a dead man's memory. Added to this tradition worship is the always present threat that the pachyderms may eventually succeed in wrestling back from the white usurpers the trail they had used for centuries in coming down from the wilds to water. The plantation mansion had been built across the trail by the bridegroom's strong-willed late father, who had bowed to nothing, man or beast.

tulsa, oklahoma. that's my rental car in the middle of the frame-- the last one left at the airport, according to the agent there on tuesday afternoon. apparently, with the arabian horse show and the national preservation conference happening simultaneously, tulsa was low on hotel rooms as well as rental cars. I ended up staying at the hampton inn in sand springs, which worked out just fine. and on friday night I got the chance to play soccer mom (not sure if this phrase works in oklahoma parlance), and drive four friends to dinner in utica square. the rest of the week, it was just me, driving around tulsa in a big ol' dodge grand caravan.

1950's Imperial Hotel Tokyo
Imperial Hotel Tokyo from a 35mm slide taken sometime in the 50's or 60's.
The second Imperial Hotel, built from 1915-1923, would be the best-known of Frank Lloyd Wright's buildings in Japan. It was designed roughly in the shape of its own logo, with the guest room wings forming the letter "H", while the public rooms were in a smaller but taller central wing shaped like the letter "I" that cut through the middle of the "H".
Architecture
The Frank Lloyd Wright version was designed in the "Maya Revival Style" of architecture. It incorporates a tall, pyramid-like structure, and also loosely copies Maya motifs in its decorations. The main building materials are poured concrete, concrete block, and carved oya stone. The visual effect of the hotel was stunning and dramatic, though not unique; in recent years, architectural historians have noted a marked similarity with the Cafe Australia, Melbourne, Australia (1916) designed by Prairie School architects Marion Mahony and Walter Burley Griffin.
The hotel had several design features that made up for its foundation:
The reflecting pool (visible in the picture above) provided a source of water for fire-fighting, saving the building from the post-earthquake firestorm;
Cantilevered floors and balconies provided extra support for the floors;
A copper roof, which cannot fall on people below the way a tile roof can;
Seismic separation joints, located about every 20 m along the building;
Tapered walls, thicker on lower floors, increasing their strength;
Suspended piping and wiring, instead of being encased in concrete, as well as smooth curves, making them more resistant to fracture.
The architecture heavily influenced the style of the Koshien Hotel, which was constructed by Wright's apprentice Arata Endo.
1923 Great Tokyo Earthquake
The structure famously survived the magnitude 8.3 Great Kanto earthquake of 1923. A telegram from Baron Kihachiro Okura reported the following:
Hotel stands undamaged as monument to your genius Congratulations
Wright's passing the telegram to journalists has helped perpetuate a legend that the hotel was unaffected by the earthquake. In reality, the building had damage; the central section slumped, several floors bulged,[1] and four pieces of stonework fell to the ground.[2] The building's main failing was its foundation. Wright had intended the hotel to float on the site's alluvial mud "as a battleship floats on water."[1] This was accomplished by making it shallow, with broad footings. This was supposed to allow the building to float during an earthquake. However, the foundation was an inadequate support and did nothing to prevent the building from sinking into the mud to such an extent that it had to be demolished decades later.[1] Furthermore, alluvial mud, such as that at the hotel's site, amplifies seismic waves.
The hotel survived an earlier earthquake that struck Tokyo during its construction. While many buildings in the area were destroyed, the hotel itself — while shaken — stood completely undamaged.
Post-War
The hotel came through World War II unscathed, despite the devastating bombings of Tokyo by the Americans. It was commandeered for a period by the Occupation forces and managed by the US Government, before being returned to its owners. As the guest wings of the Wright building were only three stories tall, it actually had relatively few guest rooms, and so a new tower wing was constructed directly behind Wright's building in the 1950s.
The hotel eventually slipped into decay as time took its toll. In a controversial decision, it was decided to demolish the old hotel and replace it with a high-rise structure, to maximize the use of land.

In Jan 1892 the old home of the National Surgical Institute burned and 19 patients were killed, this building was built following that disaster as the new home of the hospital. The Institute soon went bankrupt and by 1898 the building housed the Medical College of Indiana. By 1901 this institution has also vacated the building and the current tenant was the Imperial Hotel.

Celebration
Celebration of Baseball!
My Dad has been a big baseball fan his whole life. He grew up in St. Louis, loving Stan Musial. Now that he lives in the San Francisco Bay Area he is also a Giant's fan. This past Thursday my Dad, along with my brother, were "bat dudes" for the SF Giants - really, that was their official title, "bat dudes". They were so excited. Weeks before the game they were giddy, talking about what they would wear, what the rules of conduct were for being on the field . .. they were like kids eager for their first time at bat. This is the expression that was on my dad's face when I walked down to where he was on the field. He was very excited. It certainly was a celebration of the game of baseball.

Happy Travelers Quebec Trip: Day 9--9.16.11
On Friday, we had breakfast at our Montreal motel and traveled south to cross into the United States at Champlain, NY. There were a couple of moments of excitement at the border, but we crossed after one hour's wait. We stopped soon after crossing for a restroom break and fueling the bus. Pretty soon we stopped for lunch and saw some other people who'd just crossed the border. We arrived a little late in Albany, NY but still enjoyed our visit to the New York State Museum. We drove on to eat dinner at Applebees in Suffern, NY--arriving 2 hrs. late. Afterward we drove to our motel in Edison, NJ.

The Presley Family Gravesite In the Meditation Garden at the Graceland Mansion in Memphis, Tennessee
This is a photo that I took of the Presley family gravesite in the Meditation Garden of Elvis Presley's Graceland mansion in the city of Memphis, Tennessee.
Elvis was born in a two room shack in Tupelo, Mississippi to Vernon and Gladys Presley. He rose to the status of icon and "King of Rock and Roll." He passed away in his upstairs bathroom in the Graceland mansion on August 16, 1977 at the age of 42. His funeral was held in the living room at Graceland and he was originally interred in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Memphis. In October 1977, his father, Vernon Presley, secured permission from the city of Memphis to have the graves of Elvis and Gladys Presley removed to the grounds of the Graceland mansion out of fear that someone might steal Elvis' body. Vernon Presley was laid to rest in the Meditation Garden in 1979.
To Elvis' right is the grave of his grandmother, Minnie Mae Presley (the mother of Elvis' father, Vernon). To Elvis' left are the graves of his parents, Vernon and Gladys Presley and a small bronze memorial to his stillborn twin brother, Jessie.

Mom at the Dorado Beach Hotel
Slide #9
Mom: You know, Daddy had been working extremely hard prior to this vacation, and we primarily rested up that first couple of days. So we would've stayed around the hotel rather than go out.
Me: So why this vacation?
Mom: Well, it was two years after the honeymoon, and Daddy had been working very hard, and very late at night, and he was tired, and we thought we'd get away.
Me: But why Puerto Rico?
Mom: Well, we'd never seen Puerto Rico. And in those days you went to a travel agent, and she told you where you could get the best deals for your money, and that probably came into the decision.
Me: But you guys had no desire to go, say, I don't know, the West Coast?
Mom: No, we wanted to go someplace warm.
Me: The West Coast? Not warm?
Mom: I suppose we wanted some place more exotic. And you know, I never liked going to cities on vacations. I always liked tropical places.
Me: I was thinking more like a National Park...you know, the Wild West.
Mom: Well, that's a more active vacation. We were trying to do a low-key thing. Not one where you did a lot of sight-seeing.
When it's 93F, it's Coco Friiio time !
Fresh cold refreshing coconut juice straight out of a Coconut just wasn't my thing. Considering I got a great deal on a 2L bottle of Coke for only 50 cents USD which couldn't have had greater value if it weren't for the refrigerator in Door#3 at Bravo Beach Hotel.

Newport, Rhode Island, blessed with stunning ocean vistas and constant sea breezes, is home to some of the most exceptional private residences in America. Its deeply rooted history makes it a perennial destination, with more than 3.5 million visitors each year. Although it is one of the most high profile towns in the country, Newport is also one of the most cloistered. Private Newport: At Home and in the Garden offers an invitation to venture beyond the privet hedges and massive iron gates. It is the first book to step inside the privately owned mansions to reveal a diverse collection of architectural jewels complemented by spectacular gardens. These homes, created by distinguished architects and landscape designers, are stunning examples of Newport's 375-year "old-world" heritage. Eighteen exquisite and unique homes are prominently featured-from the resilient crescent curve of majestic Seafair, which withstood the Hurricane of '38, to the prizewinning Japanese garden at Wildacre, to the nostalgic working farm of heritage breeds at Swiss Village-each contributing its own part to the "Eden of America."

The Old Refuge Assurance Building at Manchester
Location:Oxford Street, Manchester, Lancashire, England, UK
Date of Photograph:28 May 2005
OS Grid Reference:SJ841975
The Refuge Assurance Company, now part of The Royal London Group, was founded by James Procter and other Manchester business men in 1835. Although it is now principally a provider of private pensions, much of the Refuge’s original income would have come from the fire insurance of readily-combustible, but then ubiquitous, cotton mills and warehouses.
Since 1987 The Refuge has occupied purpose-built offices at Wilmslow.
The pictured interior is of the foyer of the Refuge Building in central Manchester, built for the insurance firm and occupied by them from 1891 to 1987. This foyer area was, however, moribund by 1972. When I passed it as an undergraduate I was most impressed and intrigued by the massive and very closed iron gates that sealed a silent Victorian cobbled courtyard in which shrubs grew from the stones.
The now-renovated Italianate edifice is of structural pressed red brick and Doulton terracotta with lavish interiors of Burmantoft faience and glazed brick. Building work extended from 1891 to 1895. There is a copper-domed tower on the corner of Oxford and Whitworth Streets and the main Oxford Street frontage is graced by a 217-feet copper-domed terracotta clock tower, one of the icons of Manchester and now seen nationally on television weather glimpses from the city. Under the clock tower is a large ornamental portico of polished gray granite. The main building is by Quaker architect Alfred Waterhouse ( 1830-1905 ). He was a Liverpudlian but had the good sense to become an Owen’s alumnus. This architect’s most celebrated structure is The British Museum of Natural History at Kensington: The same as starred in “One of our Dinosaurs is Missing”. The clock tower was added in 1910-12 by Alfred’s son Paul. Further co-ordinated extensions were ranged along Whitworth Street by Stanley Birkett in 1932.
The structure is Listed Grade Two Star.
Whilst basically Cisalpine the architecture reflects Alfred Waterhouse’s eclectic Late Victorian style as reflected in the “Gothic” museum and other prestige buildings such as The ( London ) University College Hospital, The National Liberal Club and the striking Victoria University ( “Owen’s” ) complex half a mile South along Manchester’s Oxford Street. Waterhouse Senior designed numerous other university buildings across England.
The interior of The Refuge is, if anything, even more breathtaking than the facade, glittering with stained-glass, faience and iron and would have left on unforgettable impression in the ghostly green glow of Welsbach lamps. There is a marvelous marble and bronze staircase fit for The Vatican.
In 1996 Richard Newman adapted the premises for Meridien Palace Hotels Limited, who run the building as the four-star Palace Hotel, allegedly the most expensive in Manchester.
The refurbishment cost ?7 million and included a partitioning into 257 en-suite guest rooms together with numerous bars and conference rooms as well as an 810-seat restaurant open plan to the main first-floor Tempus Bar. There is air-conditioning in 60 guest rooms ( according to the staff ) and 257 ( according to Meridien Hotels ).
As a hotel the Palace has enjoyed mixed reviews. My room was large and very clean but overlooked the debris-strewn trickle in the concrete ditch that passes as the River Medlock. The breakfast was of good quality and of all you could physically consume. The Palace is however widely despised, largely it seems because the aircon and the service both conform to the traditional Mancunian standards. Some foreign guests also find the drunkenness and lawlessness of the adjacent streets disconcerting.
The pictured scene looking Southwards into the new Oxford Street foyer is accessible to non-residents as it is on the way to the main Tempus Bar, the dining area and the lavatories. Extended explorations would require arrangement with Meridien Palace Limited.
National Hotel, Mt Molloy, Qld.
Main Street, Mt Molloy, established c. 1902, with our Wicked camper out the front.
Owner of this pub from 1904-7 was the well-known explorer and prospector James Mulligan, who discovered gold on the Palmer River in 1873, tin on the Wild River in 1875, and gold in the Hodgkinson Goldfield in 1876. He mined at numerous places in the region, and died in 1907, aged 70, from knife wounds he received when he intervened in a bar-room brawl in this hotel. He is buried in the Mt Molloy cemetery.
After setting up camp in a nearby camping area, we returned here for an excelent dinner, & were on the lookout for drinkers with knives while we were there.
