China Fashion: Conversations with Designers

China Fashion: Conversations with Designers

This book documents the rise (and rise) of fashion design in China. Told through the stories of three generations of designers: those born in the 20s and 30s, who were active before the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949; those born in the 1950s and 60s, when fashion in China was isolated from the rest of the world and the wearing of “Mao suits” became obligatory; and those born in the 1970s and later, who are now attempting to integrate China in to the global fashion industry, not only as producers of clothing but as designers and marketers as well.

Chinese fashion in the past half-century is a fascinating case study, given that the country began in penury, isolation, and political correctness, went through a phase of militant anti-fashion ideology, and is now rapidly developing internationally-minded, and eager to challenge the world in all fields of endeavour. Written by an insider, this book provides a fascinating survey based on the personal, professional and creative experiences of the most influential Chinese fashion designers. As such it will be welcomed by all students of contemporary fashion and design.

Asian Wedding Show, Glasgow

Asian Wedding Show, Glasgow

Just back from Asian Wedding Show with 1221 raws to sort! This image is one I prepared earlier (at the 2009 show).

I find it impossible to restrain myself from taking hundreds of images at events like this. Three girls who have modelled for me (and their pictures are also in my people set on Flickr - Ashleigh, Catriona & Rameet) were involved, so I obviously took a lot of photos of them. Then there were all the other models and some fabulous outfits too. Two fashion shows, rest of the show with stalls, etc. And the star attraction for many of the girls there was H-Dhami, a UK Bhangra singer with a funky infusion of British & Indian influences. His presence and thumping music drove particularly the girls wild and they sang along, danced and stretched out their arms to touch him. He totally played to the audience and indulged them by touching their hands which they loved! I took loads of photos of this part of the day too. In addition to all these great subjects, when people see a professional looking camera, they often ask me to take their photos too. It all adds up to hundreds of images.

The whole thing was a very happy event and fun to be at. I was even asked if I would do a whole Asian Wedding! I said no, but would be interested in helping document it.

One of the nicest things that happened today was that I got chatting to the owner of Anjalis Boutique (in Glasgow's South Side). I had met her before , but not chatted to her. She was such a lovely person. She showered me with loads of food and ice cream, as one of their party hadn't turned up and they had spare. And then I discovered she was from Dar es Salaam in Tanzania!! Where I am from! I also found out that she is also a Facebook friend of our son Omar, and a fan of his art, so I am sure we will be in touch again

Dress, Gender and Cultural Change: Asian American and African American Rites of Passage (Dress, Body, Culture)

Within the Hmong American community, mothers and aunts of teenagers use bangles, lace and traditional handwork techniques to create dazzling displays reflecting the gender and ethnicity of their sons and daughters, nieces and nephews, as they participate in an annual courtship ritual. This book examines these events to show how dress is used to transform gender construction and create positive images of African American and Hmong American youth.

Coming-of-age rituals serve as arenas of cultural revision and change. For each of these communities, the choice of dress represents cultural affirmation. This author shows that within the homogenizing context of American society, dress serves as a site for the continual renegotiation of identity - gendered, ethnic and otherwise.

suffering from a bout of nostalgia

suffering from a bout of nostalgia

I recently discovered that all my old sites and blogs are saved at archive.org. I've been going through them, reading a history of my life for the past eight years.

There are things I forgot I wrote, things I don't want to remember, things that sent me into that place where your eyes glaze over and you get lost in thought and time.

There are words and pictures and memories and a practically minute by minute blogging of September 11, 2001 and the days that followed. There is a time line of my childrens' adolescence and reading all this is like watching them grow up all over again.

I closed off the archives on all these sites for a reason; there are things I just didn't want out there anymore. But there are things I wrote that I think are worth saving, worth reading again and worth sharing again.

This is one of them, and one of my own favorite essays.

The picture is of my friend's son Corey, and DJ on the right. I think they were six here. They are 15 now.

I wrote this particular piece on July 12, 2001.

I didn't set out to become an expert on anything but my own children. But that's what happens. By accident, by fate, by the meandering path that is parenthood, we become experts at things we thought we had no business knowing. They are not always things we want to be well-versed in. But they are things we are forced to know and research and become familiar with to the point of it becoming a part of your vocabulary, your being, your life.

I myself became an expert at a few things. I learned how to negotiate the maze that is special education. I learned how to deflect criticism and pointless accusations and needless test results. I learned how to yell, how to beg, how to stand up for everything you believe to be true and how to disprove everything you know is not. I learned the correct vernacular, the phrases and coined terms, the euphemisms that the people who think they know your child better than you use to make you think that they are so much wiser than you. I learned how to rant and rave with dignity still intact and I learned that there is no better teacher and no better healer for your child than yourself. I learned that support groups and meetings and therapist, while they all have wonderful intentions, are not replacements for real knowledge and action. I became an expert, so much so that other parents in the same predicament would call me late at night and ask for advice. And honestly, I was only passing on advice that was handed down to me by other parents who unwittingly became experts in the same field.

I became an expert at ear infections. How to tell when your child has one, even if he isn't running a fever, how to predict when one was coming, how to stave off a night of ear splitting crying, how to keep your child comfortable and relatively happy even though the inside of his ears were swollen and red and filled with fluid. I learned that Tylenol just doesn't work for some kids and antibiotics may prove useless. I learned that your child banging his head on the wall night after night was a sign of pain and that when a chatty child suddenly stops talking it's a very bad sign. I learned how to calm a child by strapping him into his carseat at 3 am and driving around the neighborhood singing Tom Chapin songs. I learned how to get a child to sleep sitting up, in a stroller, while you push said stroller around your kitchen table endlessly. I learned that doctors don't always know what's best and don't always know what's right and when your child's doctor makes you feel incompetent and stupid, that it is time to find a new one. I learned that ear infections may really be the underlying symptom to something else and I learned, in a very hard fashion, how to stop yourself from fainting when your 18 month old son is getting a spinal tap, and that if you do not stop crying and carrying on, the kind nurse will take you from the room and make you sit somewhere far away where you can't hear your son screaming in agony and fright. I learned about allergies and milk allergies in particular and I learned that sometimes the best teacher you have is the library and a pediatrician who doesn't think you are stupid or incompetent.

I became an expert at things that weren't so heartbreaking. I learned how to use a broom handle to teach a kid to ride a two-wheeler. I learned the number for poison control by heart. I was an expert on which Burger King had ball pits and which McDonalds had the outdoor playgrounds and I was the one who taught the other mothers why you never ever let your child go in one of those pretty colorful play tunnels that only a child can fit in when you are planning on leaving the Chuck E. Cheese in about ten minutes. I was an expert at the songs on Barney and the names of all the Power Rangers and I could imitate Darkwing Duck like nobody else. I knew the name of every train on Thomas the Tank Engine. I learned how to get down on a floor and play like a kid. I learned every Raffi

DSC 5232Secondhand Fashion Week - Day 6 -

This wrap around skirt was passed on to me quite a few years ago and the print is definitely rather 70s inspired. I believe it was actually handmade as well, but I'm not sure by whom. I made the sleeveless top myself out of material that was also given to me. It's a favorite color of mine and I love the yoked neckline. The shawl/poncho is another secondhand piece (and also "boho"), but I must have removed the tag - I have no idea where it's from. So, my outfit has no great brand names today. ;)

The jewelry I made myself a few years back and the wedge shoes have long been favorites (any shoe that makes me nearly 6 feet tall is awesome :).

How Squirrels Feel About Things

How Squirrels Feel About Things

A short documentary about squirrels and how they feel about things.

In case you haven't come across it before, The Pant is a fictional item of underwear my friend Mikul and I invented for those people who simply can't afford to buy an entire pair, or who enjoy the excitingly directional "mix&match" fashion that The Pant could offer if only it existed. The range pretends to include the Party Pant, The Utility Pant (with velcro or zip fastenings) and the Demi-Thong. Ooh.

The website mentioned in the video is fictional too. For obvious reasons.

Oh and the squirrel had a slightly sore throat when it recorded the song for which it apologises.

PS Apparently the words are hard to make out so here they are:

"Windmills really make us nervous / Duchess potatoes always make us weep / mirrors make us feel self conscious / we like playing hide & seek but always peep / we quite like eggs / we don't like bread / we can almost jump from there to here / we're quite ambivalent 'bout clothes in general / but we think The Pant is a fine idea."

There's nothing run-of-the-mill about working at Skirt, the preeminent fashion magazine. I'm Kira Parker, total fashion junkie. I thought I had it made when I landed this job. Ha. I mean, don't get me wrong—working at Skirt is amazing. And spending the summer in New York City without my parents? Golden. But now I'm up against Daphne Hughes, daughter of the magazine's owner. What Daphne wants, she gets—all wrapped up in a cute Coach bag. She's already got the guy of my dreams and all the right connections. Now she thinks she'll get the plum position working for the editor in chief without even lifting a diamond-adorned pinky? This catwalk is primed for battle.

After much procrastination and general business, here are the bios of Julia, Angelica, and Dalya:

Julia Valentine way to the top happened in a very unconventional way. She stumbled upon the news of Winston’s open casting while doing a Google search for a school assignment and after doing another quick Google search on Winston Models, she decided to bite the bullet and go to the casting. Many of the girls at the casting saw Julia as little to no competition due to her childish face, but she quickly outshined and outposed all of them enough to impress the Winston representatives. What she didn’t know is that she wasn’t just joining the agency, but she was basically filling in for Farrah Cunningham while she took a break for personal reasons. Julia has been impressing photographers with her posing abilities and the model instructors with her willingness to learn, but there are still the reluctant haters who quickly label her a “wannabe” and “just a replacement” that she is determined make eat their own words.

Angelica Fahmi can come off very cold and standoffish to those who first meet her and gained reputation as a ‘snob’ and ‘princess’ due to that paired with her Egyptian background. The truth is, it’s hard to make true friends when you are the daughter of a former model turned fashion magazine editor-in-chief. Every time she thinks she’s made a friend, they ended up using her as a middleman for a career boost or internship. Lucky for her, she was able to meet Nathan, Kendra, and Preston during a jewelry photoshoot and realized that all she really needed to do was get to know teenagers with established careers. Good things always heppen when you least expect it.

Dalya Minassian is a girl of many titles; celebutaunte, philanthropist, spokeswoman, and Elle’s top frienemy. Brought into the world of young Hollywood along with Elle by a third friend who removed themselves from the scene, the two decided to make makes for themselves to extend their 15 minutes of fame. The only difference is that where Elle failed at her attempt at getting a reality show, Dalya succeeded at getting one and rocketed to ‘household name’ status, making her the envy of Elle and all the other wannabe celebutauntes. The public loves her fan appreciation, her dedication to numerous charities, her smarts, and her incredibly sweet personality; even the pararazzi would rather chat with her instead of photographing her. The only think Elle seems to have that she doesn’t is a boyfriend, but that may change soon. ;)

Sometimes in life there is nothing left to say but goodbye to people, things and....even situations. That is where I find myself this morning, packing up the old and moving on to the new. My roommate Cassie and I drove the 3 hour trip to our new place in the south-end of Pixelwood, for us both its a "fresh" start.

Cassie just ended a brief but tumultuous marriage to a footballer and an internship at a top architect company upon graduating from P.U. (Pixel University), and I....I'm Aymber, was just been offered a Junior Editors position at Mon Cheri Fashion magazine in Pixelwood......and like my bff also ended an on again off again relationship with a pathological liar.

Mantua or court dress 1740-45

Mantua or court dress 1740-45

Mantua, Court dress
Place of origin: England (probably, made)
Date: 1740-1745 (made)
Artist/Maker: unknown
Materials and Techniques: Silk, embroidered with coloured silk and silver thread

'Court dress' was an exclusive and very ornate style of clothing worn by the aristocracy, the only people usually invited to attend at Court. The style of the robe is quite old-fashioned, and based on the 17th-century mantua.

Designs & Designing
The shell, the quintessential Rococo motif, constitutes the basis of the embroidery pattern. Leafy scrolls, latticed arcades and tassels are also featured, as well a profusion of realistically rendered flowers, including jasmine, morning glory and honeysuckle, peonies, roses, poppies,
anemones, auriculas, hyacinths, carnations, cornflowers, tulips and daffodils. The pattern of the silver shells and scrolls has been arranged symmetrically at the hem, but the layout of the flowers, while balanced, does not match exactly on either side. This ensemble recalls a garment worn by the Duchess of Queensbury in 1740: 'her cloathes were embroidered upon white satin; Vine leaves, Convulvus and Rosebuds shaded after Nature ...'.

Materials & Making
Seven panels of ivory-ribbed silk make up the petticoat. The robings, sleeve cuffs and skirt of the mantua are embroidered in the same design, but were modified to fit their exact proportions.
The flowers are worked in a variety of coloured silks in satin stitch and french knots. Silver thread delineates the leaves and the non-floral components of the pattern. Some of the scrolls and border elements have a backing of parchment, for solidity and regularity of line. The tassels and bases of the shells have been thickly padded underneath. Varying the height of the padding under the embroidery of the silver leaves gives the surface of the stitching a rippled effect.

Physical description
White silk mantua robe and petticoat embroidered with polychrome silks and silver thread

Object history note
This mantua is associated with the wedding of Isabella Courtenay to Dr. John Andrew in Exeter Cathedral on 14 May 1744. While it was acquired from the May Costume Sale at Christies in 1969 with no provenance, a later sale at Christies turned up a number of Victorian photographs of ladies in fancy dress costumes including an image showing this dress being worn by Caroline Mary Walwyn. The photograph was inscribed "Caroline Mary Walwyn, in the dress of Isabella Courtenay who was married 14th May 1744 in the Cathedral of Exeter". It was probably not the actual wedding dress, but could have been specially made for the bride's first Court appearance as a married woman.

with respect [the very greatest of] to LizBallerPhotos comm.

an addendum.

in a sense i agree with you, though i must ask a question.

i accept that the more rarefied upper echelons of 'fashion' [a broad term in itself] can contain work that some would refer to as 'art'.

though art in what sense?

again, with the greatest respect, i really cannot imagine a garment moving me emotionally/intellectually to the same extent as:

a john berger essay
a charles bukowski poem
a francis bacon painting
a samuel barber adagio

garments are read subjectively and [it seems to me] on a relatively simplistic level.

it either 'looks' good, or it does not.

i cannot think of a garment offering an interpretation of the world as seen through the eyes of the 'designer'. though i may well be missing a/the point.

the tee shirt is, of course, a different animal. a tee shirt is a garment containing a conceptually exterior message/symbol. it is [sometimes] 'worn' art.

fashion is predicated upon the destruction of that which immediately preceded it. a fact. if fashion did not destroy that which preceded it, there would be no need for fashion. fashion is the handmaiden [in an allegorical sense] of death.

every 'season', new fashion replaces 'old' fashion. though interestingly enough, 'old' fashion may become new fashion. this is a curious quirk of fashion.

we don't tend to see 'fresh' variants of the mona lisa appearing three times a year, each one replacing the former hanging in the louvre.

that our clothing is a visual language does not escape me.

many people describe themselves to the surrounding world through the clothing they choose.
many people dress similarly to signal to all others that they 'belong'.
the latter is much more commonplace.

the latter has its basis in fear. the fear of that which is different.

that subject in itself can lead us down very interesting [and sometimes disturbing] avenues of thought.

i digress.

as ever.

many thanks for your observation and comment LizBallerPhotos. anything that opens discussion is, as ever, most welcome.

j a mortram - real as always.

as ever, the deepest gratitude extended to all who comment on any work.

the very best to thee all.

Dead Throne

Forget everything you knew about The Devil Wears Prada. That's because the technically proficient, guitar-driven American metal outfit you'll hear on Dead Throne is a much different monster than the one you'd contended with on 2009's With Roots Above and Branches Below and 2010's Zombie EP. Dead Throne signals a more evolved, more progressive The Devil Wears Prada and contains more than a dozen cutting-edge, razor-sharp, straight-ahead heavy metal tracks that are utterly brilliant not only in their composition, but also in their flawless delivery.

For your head not your bathroom... ;)

For your head not your bathroom... ;)

Nikon D700 + Nikkor 35-70mm.

I'm not really a big fashionista. I say 'not really' but the truth is, I'm not at all. I'm the wrong shape and height to wear most fashion items well. That and my general 'tromping about' style, carting around a bag full of cameras and film, wearing my shoes down, wondering where I can find something nice to eat after rushing about only just managing not to be late to everywhere I go (sometimes at least).

Cool, calm, poised, big clothes budget, delicate heels & high class handbag dangling from the crook of my elbow; eschewing food and on the rare occasion that it is eaten, it is done so delicately without EVER dropping crumbs or sandwich insides over clothing.

Nope! You've probably guessed it, that's just not me. :)

So I found myself in this exhibition having just been put off by the enormous queue into the Picasso exhibition and having decided I'd go there early on a weekday instead, (when it would be much quieter). This was nearby, it was free, and I'm supposed to be absorbing as much of the culture here as possible. So here I was.

I'm a bit lost about the point of it all really. I'm stunned that a woman has primarily been defined here by her wardrobe and the fact that she was married to a wealthy business man, and by the end of this exhibition, that is all that I know about her. Having never heard her name before, I find that disappointing. Apart from wearing nice clothes and being perceived as having style and dignity in keeping with her social position. (That imperative in itself drives me nuts!) Who was Maria Brillas? What else was she interested in (other than looking nice in public)? What did she DO?

I think I've slam dunked myself into 'another generation of women who had to appear a certain way to be accepted into their social class'. It's become clear that Maria Brillas achieved this spectacularly. I hope though, that for Catalan women, and ALL women, that we at some point liberate ourselves of this nonsense! Not much has changed I guess. :(

Those broader misgivings aside, I could appreciate the fabrics, the design skill, and the way in which the 'wardrobe' was displayed, and I'm glad I went.

The exhibition runs until 28th August 2011. Free Entry.

How to catch a man's eye

How to catch a man's eye

Playing along with your man's fantasy a little goes a long way. My wife rarely hesitates to "vamp it up" much to my delight and I adore her for it. Obviously it has nothing to do with the reason I love her and she never wore any leather while we were first dating until I bought her the outfit above. It just adds a little bit of fun into our relationship, at least for me, and she graciously plays along.

I'm no expert on dating for damn sure, but here is one man's advice: love the woman for who she is first and be her friend. Introduce the fantasy later. Lovers and friends should not be exclusive of one another, they should go hand in hand.

This advice and $1.50 will get you a cup of coffee.

Twilight of the Gods: A Swedish Waffen-SS Volunteer's Experiences with the 11th SS-Panzergrenadier Division Nordland, Eastern Front 1944-45

Few new personal accounts by Waffen-SS soldiers appear in English; even fewer originate from the multitude of non-German European volunteers who formed such an important proportion of this service's manpower. Twilight of the Gods was originally written in Swedish, and published in Buenos Aires shortly after the end of WWII. Erik Wallin, a Swedish soldier who volunteered for service with the Waffen-SS, and participated in the climactic battles on the Eastern Front during late 1944 and 1945, later telling his story to this book's editor, Thorolf Hillblad.
Wallin served with the Panzer Reconnaissance Battalion, 11th SS-Panzergrenadier Division Nordland, a unit composed mainly of non-German volunteers, including Danes, Norwegians, and Swedes. The division enjoyed a high reputation for its combat capability, and was always at the focal points of the fighting on the Eastern Front in the last year of the war. During this period it saw combat in the Baltic, in Pomerania, on the Oder, and finally in defence of Berlin, where it was destroyed.
Erik Wallin served with his unit in all of these locations, and provides the reader with a fascinating glimpse into these final battles. The book is written with a 'no holds barred' approach which will captivate, excite and maybe even shock the reader - his recollections do not evade the brutality of fighting against the advancing Red Army. Twilight of the Gods is destined to become a classic memoir of the Second World War.

SS-PANZER-AUFKLARUNGSABTEILUNG 11: The Swedish SS-Platoon in the Battles for the Baltic, Pomerania and Berlin, 1943 - 1945 (Units)

The armor reconnaissance battalion in the SS division "Nordland" fought in varied battlefields; from Ingermanland's snow-clad hills, to the defense of the historic town of Narva. Then further over Latvia's billowing landscape against the Soviet armored thrusts that were threatening Riga. Later on, the battalion fought in the muddy trenches in Kurland and on the plains of Pomerania.
Finally, in 1945, it was to be pulled in and exterminated in the final battle of Brandenburg, in the last desperate defense of the Chancellor's office in Berlin. This unit was unique as it contained the largest concentration of Swedish volunteers in the German army during World War II.
This book is the first of its kind about the unit and it presents unique facts and photo material. The book is based on diary notes and on an original manuscript written by men who participated.
The original material has been enhanced with additional pictures, more maps, more eyewitness stories told by Swedes and more facts than the original manuscript contained. This is the first time that the world gets access to such rich material with such an explosive description of the brutal reality on the Eastern Front 1943- 1945, described by members in one of the most experienced front units in the German army's most dreaded elite force; the Waffen-SS.

Jonathan Bonner: Front Pockets

Masterfully conceived and crafted, the eleven pairs of objects designed by Jonathan Bonner to fit into an individual's trouser pockets are also completely preposterous in their functionality. Graphite and glass pocket balls pop out awkwardly from the leg, circular pocket magnets provide a novel way of carrying scissors, wrenches, and screwdrivers. Ice pocket mounds melt, pointy pocket weasels create holes, and pocket air bags bulge. In deadpan images that mock product photography and industrial publications, Bonner plays mischievously with the relationship of function to design, advertising to reality, sobriety of approach to hilarity of conception, proving himself much more interested in the long-standing relationship of hands to pockets and genitals than in the idea of usefulness.
