Herndon Swindler

Herndon Swindler

Herndon Swindler was son of Clyde and Rose, cousin to A R Swindler. Herndon was unhappy with the way that his father treated him and his sisters, didn't get along with his father.

Herndon changed his surname to Hall, his wife's maiden name. One version of the story is that during the depression, jobs were very difficult to obtain. He was offered a job with the John Deere Company and felt that the Swindler surname would not be pleasing so he changed it. Don't know how the job offer turned out. He was employed at a Liberal, Kansas bank when his mother died in 1934..

In 1961, Ena visited Herndon Hall in Whittier, California. He was a department supervisor at a furniture manufacturing plant. Herndon told Ena that during the war he was working for a bank, and the manager thought the name Swindler was not appropriate for their business. In order to keep his job, Herndon changed his name to his wife's maiden name, Hall. He died about 1966.

Inside the Smile Moon Woodworks Shop

Inside the Smile Moon Woodworks Shop

This should be an indication of how seriously I've taken the 'handmade movement' (reuse, repurpose, recycle). Here, we see your humble narrator scoring fold lines in sheets of cardboard to make shipping boxes for the toy wooden swords I sell out of my Etsy shop. I prefer to make them myself because A) I can make them quickly, B) I can make them whatever size I need, and C) I'm a cheap bastard.

The cardboard came from my day job where it started life as liners between stacks of plywood. The tool I'm using was bought years ago for the purpose of pressing the jute into the grooves for repairing screen windows, the swords themselves are all reclaimed lumber from said day job at the furniture manufacturing facility, and, heck, the clothes I'm wearing mostly came from that Big Online Auction website.
