Top coat on all was a heavy gloss white, some over full-door Bucknell boards, all coating everything including door furniture. All were stripped in an alcaline bath by PJ Pine of Central Hill, Upper Norwood. I've applied (indifferently) a 'glaze' bought from Lidl: (acrylate suspensions, iron oxide, glycol) in "oak" shade, in order to hide the multitude of injuries and sins to which the doors have been subject. They are nothing special, but now have a dirt- and grease-resistant coating. Doors Doors can have a lot of character, be it in the hinges, knob, or style. 'Roaching Greyhound Firstly, apologies for the quality - this is a mobile phone snap. Gilmour had been curled up in his basket sleeping - don't be fooled by this pic, his basket is more than big enough for him! He was fast asleep and rolled over into a classic Grey 'cockroach' position and proceeded to snore and twitch in REM sleep. Here he has his cushion pushed to one side and his head falling out of his basket and resting on his two favourite toys - his filthy, white, now legless duck that we bought for him on his first day, and his Christmas reindeer. I think this is a picture of greyhound bliss! And, blissfully, Gilmour is having his stitches removed in the morning - I'm so looking forward to him being able to play with his friends again! Macdonald’s National Policy called for protective tariffs to encourage Canadian industries and, in keeping with this, in 1879, the tariff on furniture rose to 35 per cent. It had the desired effect in Victoria by spawning two major furniture factories. The name Weiler was best known and one of the oldest in the field, having started in Victoria in 1861 as upholsterers and later furniture dealers. In 1879, German-born Weiler constructed a furniture factory at what is now known as the Counting House at the corner of Broad and Broughton streets. My apartment flooded--the aftermath Well, I have to make this quick--I'm on battery power. This morning I went to the doctor. I have a cold and my lungs are inflamed and I have a horrendous sinus infection, so I relented and got some antibiotics for the latter. I was feeling better, a little, so I went to my last class (of my undergrad career!!) and to a poetry reading. But then, while I was at the poetry reading for two hours, my apartment was flooded. Flooded, as in, a water pipe leading to the washer spontaneously burst, and two inches of water were sitting throughout the entire place, except for half of the bedroom, including my bed, which was spared... and I'm thinking the closet is okay too. I've been cleaning up for the last two and a half hours. There were men here with wet vacuums sucking up excess water, but the whole carpet will have to be gutted. Apparently that's going to happen tomorrow. They put foam blocks under most of my wood furniture. I don't think a lot of serious monetary damage was done (nothing like the horrors of New Orleans, etc., thank god), but a lot of school papers were ruined (I still have papers to write, one due tomorrow, and a final to take). Several days worth of cat food got waterlogged. Also, several library books were waiting by the door so I could take them back to the library... I have to take them in batches because they're too heavy to carry all at once. They're completely saturated. My high school senior year yearbook, saturated. The mat that goes underneath the litter box... the bottoms of several boxes... the bottoms of two pieces of art I had sitting in front of my fireplace... all waterlogged. My laptop cord--possibly ruined (hence the battery power.) I'm going to have to call in to work tomorrow, resulting in lost pay. All of my laundry, which I had in piles waiting to wash, is saturated and soggy, and I've placed it all on the patio. I can't do anything with that stuff until tomorrow, when I can go and get some quarters and head to the laundromat. Crap, even then... how am I going to cart a ton of heavy, soaking laundry somewhere? And get my car wet? Damn. I'm just hoping it doesn't rain, so it doesn't get any more soggy. I wish more than anything that I had my parents or close friends living near me. This sucks. Crookshanks is seriously spooked too. When I walked in, he was sitting on the arm of the couch, high ground, all scared and puffytailed. Poor baby. He couldn't even get to his litter box because the entire bathroom was flooded. I had to move him into the bedroom while the men worked. At least my bedroom isn't too flooded, so I can sleep here tonight, if I can find the time. I really have to get things cleaned up so they will be able to move out all of my furniture tomorrow when the carpet people come. I want to clear off all the kitchen cabinets so they can stack stuff there if needed. I'm running on adrenaline right now. And I'm really wheezing. I need to take an inhaler... this muggy air in here is really hell for my already stressed-out lungs. Crap! I have to try and get my bedroom window open. It's really stubborn, but I don't think I could breathe in there without fresh air. Von Stauffenberg family seat Greifenstein Castle near Heiligenstadt (built in 1172, rebuilt around 1550), Franconia (Bavaria) is still in posession of the family von Stauffenberg and nowadays occupied by Otto-Philipp Schenk Earl von Stauffenberg. Amongst his ancestors were politicians, scientists and important divines. But his most famous ancestor is definitely colonel Claus Schenk Earl von Stauffenberg, who made a famous and corageous attempt on Adolf Hitler’s life on July 20th 1944. The castle can be visited and contains next to many precious items of furniture a world-renowned collection of weapons. Some additional information about the family and Claus Schenk Earl von Stauffenberg: Claus Schenk Earl von Stauffenberg never permanently lived in this castle, but he used to visit it quite often. He grew up in a different one as the family von Stauffenberg is in possession of four castles altogether. As far as I know, Claus Schenk Earl von Stauffenberg was the uncle of the present owner Otto-Philipp Earl von Stauffenberg, who's already 83 years of age. ;-) After von Stauffenberg's attempt on Hitler's life failed, he was executed in the courtyard of the Bendlerblock in Berlin. But not only he, also one of his brothers, who was involved in the assassination attempt as well, became executed and even the rest of the family was punished hardly. Some were sent to concentration camps, some to prisons and the children were admitted to children's homes, giving them new surnames at the same time. Himmler, the SS national leader, planned to go even further by extinguishing the whole family. These were his words: "This man has committed treason; his blood is bad; there is traitor's blood in him; that must be wiped out. And in the blood feud the entire clan was wiped out down to the last member. And so, too, will Count Stauffenberg's family be wiped out down to the last member." But fortunately Himmler's plans were not accomplished. In the last months of the war Greifenstein castle was used as a quarter of the SS, whilst its family owners were imprisoned. And later it became a quarter of the advanced US army. But after the family was freed, the castle was handed back to its owners. Most interesting was, that whilst many other castles were looted by GIs, the GIs didn't loot Greifenstein. Every little item was still in its place when the family regained the castle (except of a small collection of coins) - most likely due to the respect of the American soldiers for the family name von Stauffenberg. Mission 10.3 I seem to have the urge to hate Acklays from now on. The mission was simple, destroy the remaining CIS on any bridges heading towards the base leaving room for our Majors to get the info out of there. Thing is, this base was in the middle of the Ebon sea. Geonosis has a sea, I thought. The place looked more like Raxus Prime than anything. I came to one of the bridges and started firing down B1's with some other troops. The bridge begins shaking. The waves began flowing. Out of nowhere, an Ackly arm shot out from the water and ripped the bridge in half. This was no fun and games. This sea was gruesome, and I was sinking in it. I fired down the arm and grab the remaining half standing. Geonosis is over with. I'm done with this bull sh*t. My very late entry. :P Mission 6.1- Taking the Bridge Mission: 6.1 The CIS are invading the planet of Gand- that is all I bothered to read on my mission briefing. The 89th Legion were dropped onto the Separatist ship, the Gild XI, and told to take the bridge of the Planetary Defence Generator. My squad and I made it into the main corridor leading to the bridge before we encountered Separatist Droid Marines. 2 of my squad members (Giv and Chop) took the ones by the door whilst Maz and I took down the Tactical droid and his guard on the lower levels. The Bridge is ours. 105 Riverside Drive House Upper West Side, Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States The 105 Riverside Drive House, originally designed by well-known architect and developer Clarence F. True, was built on speculation in 1898- 99 as one house of a picturesque group of six houses on the southeast corner of Riverside Drive and West 83rd Street. Today the 105 Riverside Drive House is architecturally significant and as one of the five extant houses in this group represents the first period of development on Riverside Drive. True designed several hundred houses, primarily in groups, on the Upper West Side in the years between 1890 and 1901, and was largely responsible for promoting the development and establishing the character of lower Riverside Drive. The houses in the group at Riverside and West 83rd Street were designed in True's signature "Elizabethan Revival" style based on French and English Renaissance prototypes and built by True's development firm, the Riverside Building Company; they are the northernmost of True's designs built along the Drive. This L-shaped house was originally designed with a projecting three-sided bay and a low stoop, but these features (along with those of the adjacent houses) became the focus of an interesting legal controversy several years after construction. As the result of a lawsuit brought by an adjacent property owner, the court ruled in 1903 that no one had the authority to place permanent encroachments onto public thoroughfares, and the owners of the houses in the True group facing onto Riverside Drive were thus ordered to remove the projections. In 1911 the main facades were removed and rebuilt to follow the diagonal of the Riverside Drive property lines. No. 105 (owned by Goddard and Josephine DuBois, collectors of art and Egyptiana) received a partial new design by the firm of Bosworth & Holden. The True design is characterized by such surviving picturesque elements as contrasting light orange Roman ironspot brick and limestone facing, the steeply pitched tile roof with prominent front and side dormers, and the elaborate stepped end-wall gable and oriel on the southern elevation facing a side courtyard. The Bosworth & Holden design for the Riverside Drive facade is executed in matching materials and features a large arched opening on the second story with a delicate wrought- iron balcony and horizontal window groups on the third and fourth stories surmounted by a bracketed cornice. As seen today the 105 Riverside Drive House is a fine and compatibly integrated architectural design that reflects the work of two architectural firms. The Development of Riverside Drive < The Upper West Side, known as Bloomingdale prior to its urbanization, remained largely undeveloped until the 1880s. In the early eighteenth century, Bloomingdale Road (later renamed the Boulevard and finally Broadway in 1898) was opened through rural Bloomingdale and provided the northern route out of the city which was then concentrated at the southern tip of Manhattan. The Upper West Side was included in the Randel Survey of 1811 (known as the Commissioners' Map) which established a uniform grid of avenues and cross streets in Manhattan as far north as 155th Street, although years elapsed before streets on the Upper West Side were actually laid out, some as late as the 1870s and 1880s, and the land was subdivided into building lots. Improved public transportation to the area contributed to the growth and sustained development of the Upper West Side, particularly the completion in 1879 of the Elevated Railway on Ninth Avenue (renamed Columbus Avenue in 1890). The biggest boost to the development of the West End (the area west of Broadway), however, was the creation of Riverside Drive and Park (a designated New York City Scenic Landmark). The presence of the Park and Drive was an important factor in making this area desirable for high-quality residential development. In 1865 the first proposal for converting the land on the Upper West Side along the eastern shore of the Hudson River into an ornamental park had been presented by Park Commissioner William R. Martin. The purchase of the park site and initial plans were approved in 1866. The drive, as proposed at this time, was to be a straight 100-foot wide road; however, this plan was impractical due to the existing topography. Hired by the Commissioners in 1873, Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903), already distinguished by his collaboration with Calvert Vaux (1824-1895) in the successful design for Central Park, proposed an alternate scheme. Olmsted's design for Riverside Park and Drive took into consideration the pre-existing topography, landscape possibilities, and views, resulting in a park and drive that would be amenable for horses and pleasure driving, would provide shaded walks for pedestrians, and would also allow easy access to and scenic vistas from the real estate bordering it on the east. Olmsted's plan was adopted by the Commissioners but Horn & Hardart Automat Cafeteria Building Casa Puebla, Upper West Side, Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States The 3-story, limestone-clad Horn & Hardart Automat-Cafeteria Building at 2710-2714 Broadway (at West 104th Street), a distinctive small-scale commercial structure executed in the Art Deco style, is one of the best surviving examples of the popular chain restaurants that proliferated in the city during the first three decades of the 20th century. In 1927, the Horn & Hardart Co. became the leaseholder of this site. This building was constructed in 1930 to the design of F[rederick]. P[utnam]. Platt & Brother [Charles Carsten Platt], who executed numerous New York commissions for Horn & Hardart from about 1916 to 1932. By 1927, F.P. Platt & Bro. had developed a modern and functional design prototype for purpose-built Horn & Hardart automat-cafeteria buildings, with large windows, that assisted the restaurant chain in achieving a consistent commercial image. The Horn & Hardart Co., established in 1911, was the New York subsidiary of the Horn & Hardart Baking Co. of Philadelphia, which had been incorporated in 1898 by Joseph V. Horn and Frank A. Hardart, lunchroom proprietors since 1888. In 1902, Horn & Hardart opened its first waiterless Philadelphia restaurant, or "automat," in which customers could retrieve food directly from windows after depositing nickels in European-made equipment. The first New York automat opened in 1912, with American machinery, at 1557 Broadway in Times Square. Known for uniformly good food at low cost, automats became wildly popular and one of the city's cherished democratic institutions, appealing to a wide clientele. This automat-cafeteria building is made notable by its glazed polychrome Art Deco style terra-cotta ornament on the third story. Executed in hues of green, blue, tan, and gold luster by the Atlantic Terra Cotta Co., the terra cotta is located on sills, panels above the windows, stylized pilaster capitals, and the building's terminating band. The highly sophisticated panels feature stylized floral motifs and zigzag patterns; the modeler of these panels has not been identified, but the work is strikingly similar to that of preeminent architectural sculptor Rene P. Chambellan. Horn & Hardart remained a tenant on the ground story and mezzanine here until 1953, and the mezzanine level was remodeled as a full story in 1955. There have been a wide variety of commercial and organizational tenants over the years. While the current ground-floor storefront covers historic elements, visible above this are the upper portion of the original central segmental arched opening (with a fluted molded granite surround with a keystone) and the top of the bronze entrance portal and decorative bronze spandrel. Four lots at the southeast corner of Broadway and West 104th Street were assembled in 1885, 1901, and 1904 by George W. Walker. The combined property, built up with four structures, was leased to D[avid]. A. Schulte, Inc. (Schulte Real Estate Co./ Schulte Cigar Co.) in 1920. In December 1926, this property was sub-leased to the Broadway & 104th Street Realty Co., under Samuel Gershowitz, who, according to the #ew For^ T'wes, "apparently made a business of opening eating places and selling them," and had gangster-related connections.18 The Horn & Hardart Co. became the lessee a year later for $50,000. The #ew For^ T'wes in December 1927 announced that the firm would "upon the expiration of existing leases, erect a new building to house in part a branch automat cafeteria."19 George W. Walker's will, probated in March 1930, left this property jointly to his sons, George L. Walker (who served as a chief engineer of buildings and sanitary inspection for New York City) and Samuel B. Walker, and his daughter, Katherine V. Walker Born. F.P. Platt & Bro. filed plans in April 1930 for a 2-story plus mezzanine automat-cafeteria and office building, measuring approximately 71 by 69 feet and expected to cost $105,000. Construction began at the end of May and was completed in just five months, in October 1930. T.J. Murphy Co. was the contractor. New Year...New Me. I have very slowly been upgrading Page, adding to an inventory screaming 2009 and violent roleplay gang leader. And..the inventory? Such a mess! (and still after the holidays, but I'm fixing that). I spent the holidays hitting up sales, collecting make ups from my friend Mock, getting lovely jewels from Brutus of Pididdle and of course my bestie Plurabelle. I also have been stashing jeweled goodies from Chop Zuey's advent event and Earthstones giftie trees, other clothing advents, and lovely things Larcoco has gifted me from C'est La Vie (xoxox) And shoe sales! I took advantage of those too! Narcodix had a 70% off shoe sale! PLUS- I've been loading up on mesh...mesh..mesh! But yesterday it was time to skin shop. And (^$!! skin shopping, to me, is an absolute HORROR! I spent 2 years wearing Chai then one wearing Tuli. My latest by Mojo followed. So I have been pretty loyal when it comes to wearing skins. But here in 2012 there are so many! And there are templates now that cause many skins to look very much alike (-_-), so it was pretty brutal- the entire 24 hours of blog reading, advice collecting and demo wearing. BUT- I managed to find one I LOVED. Yes. LOVED. I tried everything from FD to Jesylilo- Glance to Pink Fuel. Curio, old &bean skins I had, My Ugly Dorothy, Al Vulo, Atomic, Ploom, League, even Milok sent me a gorgeous skin from Mothergoose. Oh! And The Skinnery, Mynerva, Dutch Touch and several different kinds from Mojo. They all either did not look right, were gorgeous but too pale (I like to rep my Cherokee heritage) or they looked the same as two other skins minus a few details. It was a LOOONG process. BUT..I did manage to grab some things on sale for safe keeping from Dutch Touch and Antz, packed up on free holiday gifts left about and like Milok, Nova of Timbaktu sent me a gorgeous skin as well out of kindness. So I have lots of great skins for random rainy days, photos, etc, or when I decide to try a new shape and look. WIN! So- speaking of win, who'd I pick? The Body Co.! Who I'd tried before on Chre with ZERO win. Chre looked hideous in Body Co., but Page? Holy wow. I put it on and was like - THAT'S IT! That's the skin!" There was no second-guessing or switching back and forth from skin-to-skin to compare. The dark skin was the perfect shade and it detailed her shape and face with perfection. Well...that's MY opinion. You folks may think I look hideous! But I am happy, and as I was telling Aidan Valeska, I've never seen such a perfect pair of "tatas" on a skin since I started SL. Even I found myself staring at my own small boobage. Happy am I? YES! And now I can play with make ups and hair and lashes and get all kinds of experimental. It's my way of pampering myself during my small vacation at my Decoch getaway in SL, where I'm pictured here at the sim owner's art gallery. I am Loving it! Skin: The Body Co. living room rearranged My plan for rearranging my teeny-tiny living room. Right now, the couch is on the wall with the window and the TV in in the upper left-hand corner. This new arrangement, I think, will give me a little more usable space. A few more notes: - This is to scale. - The white areas on the border are openings/entryways, the black parts of the border are walls. - The configuration of the TV, shelf and computer might be changed a little to put the TV more in line with the couch. The TV swivels on its stand, though, so aligning it with the line of sight from the couch shouldn't be a problem. - There is a heater unit in the wall in the upper right-hand corner of the room, so nothing can be placed against that wall.
