Arthur Page
Arthur Page was my great-grandfather, the father of Phyllis Alice Page, my father's mother. He was born on the 31st March 1879 in Annesdale, Ely, Cambridgeshire.
The Pages were a large family - Arthur was one of at least thirteen - and lived in the poor Waterside area of Ely. On this birth certificate, the signature of the informant is an X, beside which the registrar has written The mark of Alice Page, mother - that is to say, his mother was illiterate, as all my great-great-grandparents seem to have been.
Arthur was married by the age of 22, and worked first as a baker's labourer and then as a general labourer.
During the First World War, he signed up as a Serjeant in the 2nd Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment. He was killed shortly before first light on what would be a warm, sunny day, just to the west of Delville Wood near the village of Longueval, to the east of the town of Albert, on the 20th day of the Battle of the Somme, 20th July 1916. He was 37 years old.
Chris McCarthy, in The Somme Day-by-Day, records that Early in the morning the Division made an attack on Delville Wood and village using 2nd Suffolks and 10th Royal Welsh Fusiliers. At 3.35 am the Suffolks advanced from the west, but the two leading companies were almost entirely wiped out. The Fusiliers went astray, and came under fire from a British machine-gun barrage, losing most of their officers, only to press home a fruitless attack. In the evening, 76 Brigade relieved the South Africans.
The Wikipedia entry for the battle at Delville Wood observes that fighting for Delville Wood commenced on 14 July 1916 when the South African Infantry Brigade of the 9th Division captured Longueval and gained a foothold in the neighbouring wood. The wood lay on the right flank of the British line and, along with nearby Waterlot Farm, protected the villages of Guillemont and Ginchy. As was the case at nearby High Wood, the Germans resisted strongly in Delville Wood and every gain made by the British was subjected to repeated counter-attack. Consequently the wood changed hands a number of times before it was finally secured by the British on 3 September during the Battle of Guillemont. The 9th Division fought in Delville Wood until 20 July when it was relieved by the 3rd Division and a brigade of the 18th (Eastern) Division.
The 2nd Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment was part of the 3rd Division of the British Army, which, as noted, relieved the South African brigade of the 9th Division on the 20th of July - that is to say, Arthur Page was killed on the first day of his battalion's engagement.
Arthur's body was recovered, identified, and buried at Delville Wood cemetery in Longueval. We visited Albert in the summer of 2006, but I did not know about Arthur Page at that time, and so we did not go to Longueval. We will have to go back.
Arthur's younger brother Herbert had been killed near Ypres four months earlier, and his brother-in-law, also called Herbert, would be killed near Ramallah, Gaza, less than a year later.
It is said that, when Arthur's widow Sophia opened the telegram telling her of his death, she immediately lost her hearing, and was deaf for the rest of her life.

Challis, Idaho--Jones Ranch
RANCHING VICTORY IN 9TH CIRCUIT COURT OF APPEALS
BY JAKE PUTNAM, IDAHO FARM BUREAU NEWS
(Sacramento) The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that a Challis, Idaho ranch family can start ranching again.
The Western Watersheds Project sued Verl Jones in 2001 claiming that the rancher violated the Endangered Species act by diverting water from Otter Creek and killing endangered bull trout. Otter Creek is a tributary of Panther Creek which flows into the
Salmon River. Federal biologists say it is habitat for bull trout, a species listed under the Endangered Species Act.
Federal District Judge Lynn Winmill ordered Jones to stop diverting water, which cut into the families hay production and nearly bankrupted the ranch. They were also ordered to pay $36,000.00 to Watershed’s attorney Laird Lucas of Boise.
Friend Jerry Hawkins of Challis says the stress of the Federal Court decision and the order to pay attorney fees may have been too much for 87-year old Verl Jones, he passed away shortly after the order to pay attorney fees.
“It’s a huge victory for the little guy and I think it gives folks hope,” said Russell Brooks of the Pacific Legal Foundation
“For many years environmental radical groups like the Idaho Watersheds project could terrorize people in Idaho basing their lawsuits on water use or land use now they’ve been beaten and hopefully the tide is turning,” added Brooks.
Some attorneys think the 9th Circuit may have set new doctrine in all ESA lawsuits; the court ruled that in order to prove harm to species there has to be evidence of harm in the past.
“There has not been a Bull trout seen harmed in that ditch in 40 years, not since 1961 and we think that’s a good indication that you will not see any dead Bull trout or harmed Bull trout in the next 40 years and the 9th circuit agreed with us, they said ‘Lack of harm in the past can certainly be indicative of whether or not harm will occur in the future,’ said Brooks.
No one has ever hooked a Bull trout or any other kind of trout on Otter Creek according to Ward Jones. He says downstream beaver dams have shut off the upper reaches of the creek to trout. The beaver dams are still there, with no plans to have them removed to enhance habitat.
“Since we were old enough to do anything or know anything we would go up on the ditch and in all those years of turning that ditch on shutting it off in the fall, never seen any sign of any kind of fish up there,” said Jones. “National Marine Fisheries even said that Otter creek, the way it is had no impact on the Bull trout recovery, and their testimony and everything was completely ignored in the court ruling and it just wound up where it is now.”
Russell Brooks and the Pacific Legal Foundation set out to prove that the Jones Ranch were good stewards of the land and never harmed habitat, they forced the Watershed Project Attorneys to prove that first--Bull trout flourished in Otter Creek, and their demise were the result of ranching practices; the Watershed’s attorney couldn’t prove either
“I think this court decision sends a message to these groups if they are claiming harm to a species they’re going to provide hard evidence of that harm, they’re not going to get a rubber stamp in the District Court,” said Brooks.
The Jones’ now have the right to seek Attorney fees, not only on appeal which amount to as much as $50,000 and also they can ask for attorney fees in the District court amounting to $50,000.
Brooks expects the Western Watershed Project to file another lawsuit in District Court. “He must require them to provide some evidence, whether or not they can come up with the evidence is another question and we contend that they can’t,” said Brooks.

Free Speech
"The 1960s threw up an idealistic and romantic generation of young leftwing intellectuals, who impressed the public with their selflessness and dedication to a worldwide cause to bring about social justice, equality and a ‘brave new world’. They comprised students, journalists, writers, lawyers and trade unionists. Many were detained during the colonial and post-colonial regimes."
"By the mid-1960s, the leftwing in Malaya, Singapore, Sarawak and Brunei was in disarray, suppressed if not in retreat due to ideological or communal differences."

Communism in Singapore is complicated, intricately linked with anti-colonialism and Chinese values, although not always in the way you might think. Whatever, it's dead and gone now, good only for source material for telco adverts: heartbreaking.

Maccari, Mino (1898-1989) - 1975c. Untitled (Private Collection)
Oil on panel; 39.3 x 54.7 cm.
Born in Sienna in 1898, at the age of nineteen Mino Maccari fought in the First World War as an artillery officer. On his return to Siena in 1920, he graduated in law and started working at the legal practice of a lawyer. It was during these years that he first tried his hand at painting and etching.
Maccari's public debut was with the Labronico Group. In 1922 he took part in the march on Rome.
In 1924 he was asked by Angiolo Bencini to take charge of printing Il Selvaggio, the periodical in which his first etchings were published. In 1926 he gave up his law career to take over as director, a position he held until 1942. In 1925, publication of Il Selvaggio moved to Florence, and its contributors included Ardengo Soffici, Ottone Rosai and Achille Lega. In 1927 Maccari took part in the Second International Exhibition of Modern Etchings and in the Third Exhibition of the Tuscan Union of Art and Design. The following year he went to the XVI Venice Biennial. In 1929, Il Selvaggio moved to Siena, and Maccari exhibited dry-points at the Second Exhibition of the Italian Twentieth Century in Milan. In the early Thirties, he became editor-in-chief of La Stampa in Turin, working alongside the director, Malaparte.
In 1931 he took part in the first Quadrennial in Rome (which he was to repeat in 1951 and in 1955). In 1932 Il Selvaggio moved to Rome. In 1938 he was invited to the XXI Venice Biennial, where he had his own exhibition room. In the same year he contributed to Longanesi's Omnibus and also held an exhibition of his work at the Arcobaleno in Venice. In 1943 he had a one-man exhibition at Palazzo Massimo in Rome and at the Dux Exhibition in Cinquale di Montignoso. In 1948 he again exhibited at the Venice Biennial where he was awarded the international prize for etching (which he was to win again in 1950, 1952, 1960 and 1962). At the end of the Forties he started contributing to the liberal magazine Il Mondo, directed by Pannunzio, which he continued to do until 1963.
In 1955 he exhibited at the Biennial of Sao Paulo (Brazil). In 1962 he was appointed president of the Accademia dei Lincei. Then, in 1963, he held a personal exhibition in New York at Gallery 63, and in 1967 he took part in the Mostra d'Arte Moderna in Italia 1915-1935 (Exhibition of Modern Art in Italy from 1915-1935"), held in the Strozzi Palace in Florence. There followed a series of personal exhibitions and international exhibitions of graphic design, including the 1977 exhibition in Siena, where a one-man exhibition dedicated to his work was held at Palazzo Pubblico. He died in 1989 in Rome.
